1 Samuel 21
1 David loe Nob vangpui ah kaom qaima Ahimelek khaeah caeh; Ahimelek mah David to hnuk naah zit; to pongah anih khaeah, Tikhoe minawk hoi angzo ai ah, nangmabueng nang zoh loe? tiah a naa.
And David comes to Nob, to Ahimelech the priest, and Ahimelech trembles at meeting David and says to him, “Why [are] you alone, and no man [is] with you?”
2 David mah qaima Ahimelek khaeah, Siangpahrang mah hmuen maeto sak hanah ang paek; anih mah kai khaeah, Toksak hanih kang patoeh han, kang thuih ih lok hae mi mah doeh panoek hmah nasoe, tiah ang naa. Ka tamnanawk to ih ahmuen to baktih ahmuen ah angcu o hanah ka patoeh boeh.
And David says to Ahimelech the priest, “The king has commanded me [on] a matter, and he says to me, Let no man know anything of the matter about which I send you, and which I have commanded you; and [my] young men know [to go] to such and such a place.
3 Vaihi na ban ah timaw na tawnh? Na tawnh ih takaw kae pangato maw, to tih ai boeh loe na tawnh ih kawbaktih hmuen doeh na paek ah, tiah a naa.
And now, what is there under your hand? Give five loaves into my hand, or that which is found.”
4 Toe qaima mah David khaeah, Takaw rumram loe ka tawn ai, toe thendoeng loe nongpata khaeah caeh ai moe, ciimcai ah om nahaeloe, takaw ciim loe ka tawnh, tiah a naa.
And the priest answers David and says, “There is no common bread under my hand, but there is holy bread; if only the youths have been kept from women.”
5 David mah qaima khaeah, Kholong ka caeh pacoeng hoi vaihni ni thumto karoek to, kawbaktih nongpata hoiah doeh kang kom ai; thendoeng ih hmuen loe ciimcai bae; takaw doeh kami boih mah caak ih takaw baktiah ni oh; vaihniah ni takaw kangtha to suek o vop, tiah a naa.
And David answers the priest and says to him, “Surely, if women have been restrained from us as before in my going out, then the vessels of the young men are holy, and it [is] a common way; and also, surely it is sanctified today in the vessel.”
6 Caboi nuiah suek ih takaw ai ah loe, takaw kalah om ai boeh pongah, caboi nuiah suek ih takaw kangquem to takhoe moe, azuengah kangtha suek ih takaw, Angraeng hmaa ih kaciim takaw kabae to qaima mah lak anih hanah paek.
And the priest gives the holy thing to him, for there was no bread there except the Bread of the Presentation, which is turned aside from the presence of YHWH to put hot bread [there] in the day of its being taken away.
7 To na niah Saul ih tamna maeto to ahmuen ah oh toeng, anih loe Angraeng hmaa ah toksak; anih loe Edom kami ah oh, anih to Dog, tiah kawk o, anih loe Saul ih tuu toepkung ah oh.
And there [is] a man of the servants of Saul detained before YHWH on that day, and his name [is] Doeg the Edomite, chief of the shepherds whom Saul has.
8 David mah Ahimelek khaeah, Tayae, to tih ai boeh loe sumsen na tawn ai maw? Siangpahrang ih hmuen to karangah sak han oh pongah, kaimah ih sumsen hoiah palaanawk to ka sin ai, tiah a naa.
And David says to Ahimelech, “And is there not spear or sword here under your hand? For I have taken neither my sword nor my vessels in my hand, for the matter of the king was urgent.”
9 Qaima mah, Nang mah Elah azawn ah hum ih Philistin acaeng Goliath ih sumsen loe hae ah oh; kahni hoi ayaw hmoek moe, khukbuen suekhaih ahnuk bangah oh bae; na koeh nahaeloe la khae, to hmuen khue ai ah loe kalah sumsen om ai, tiah a naa. David mah, To baktih hmuen loe naa ah doeh om ai, kai han na paek ah, tiah a naa.
And the priest says, “The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom you struck in the Valley of Elah, behold, it is wrapped in a garment behind the ephod, if you take it to yourself, take; for there is none other except it in this [place].” And David says, “There is none like it—give it to me.”
10 David mah Saul to zit pongah to na niah cawnh moe, Gath siangpahrang Akhish khaeah caeh.
And David rises and flees on that day from the face of Saul, and comes to Achish king of Gath;
11 Toe Akhish ih tamnanawk mah anih khaeah, Hae David loe Israel siangpahrang na ai maw? Saul mah sangto hum moe, David mah sang hato hum, tiah hnawhaih hoi laasak o thuih ih kami na ai maw? tiah a naa o.
and the servants of Achish say to him, “Is this not David, the king of the land? Is it not of this one [that] they sing in dances, saying, Saul struck among his thousands, and David among his myriads?”
12 To lok to David mah palung thung hoi poek naah, Gath siangpahrang Akhish to paroeai zit.
And David lays these words in his heart, and is exceedingly afraid of the face of Achish king of Gath,
13 To pongah nihcae hmaa ah kamthu baktiah angsak pae moe, nihcae khaeah kamthu baktiah oh pae; a toektaboe mui pongah tamtuih to longsak moe, khongkha pongah angmathaih to tarik.
and changes his behavior before their eyes, and feigns himself mad in their hand, and scribbles on the doors of the gate, and lets down his spittle to his beard.
14 Akhish mah a tamnanawk khaeah, khen oh, kamthu kami ho na hnu o ai maw, tih hanah kai khaeah nang hoih o loe?
And Achish says to his servants, “Behold, you see a man acting as a madman; why do you bring him to me?
15 Kai mah kamthu kami patoh han koeh, tiah na poek o pong maw kai khaeah kamthu hae nang hoih o? Hae baktih kami hae ka imthung ah akun han oh maw? tiah a naa.
Am I lacking madmen, that you have brought in this one to act as a madman before me? Does this one come into my house?”
