< 1 Samuel 19 >
1 Saul mah David hum hanah, a capa Jonathan hoi a tamnanawk boih khaeah lokpaek.
Then Saul instructed his son Jonathan and all his officials to kill David. But Jonathan really liked David,
2 Toe Jonathan mah David to palung parai pongah David khaeah, Kam pa Saul mah nang hum hanah pakrong; to pongah akhawnbang khoek to acoehaih hoiah khosah ah, mi mah hnuk thai ai ih ahmuen ah anghawk ving ah;
so he warned him, “My father Saul is trying to kill you. So be careful tomorrow morning—find a place to hide and stay hidden.
3 na ohhaih ahmuen lawk ah pa taengah kang doet moe, nang ih akawng to anih khaeah ka thuih han; anih poekhaih to nang khaeah kang thaisak let han hmang, tiah a naa.
I'll go out with my father and stand in the field near to where you are hiding. I'll talk to him about you and see what I can find out, then I'll let you know.”
4 Jonathan mah, Ampa Saul khaeah David kawng to kahoih ah thuih pae; anih loe na nuiah kahoih ai hmuen to sah ai, paroeai kahoih hmuen to ang sak pae pongah, siangpahrang mah a tamna David nuiah kahoih ai hmuen to sah hmah nasoe;
Then Jonathan spoke positively about David to his father Saul, and told him, “The king should not do anything bad to his servant David because he's not done anything bad to you—he has always served you well.
5 anih loe hinghaih paawt ai ah, Philsitin kami to hum; Angraeng mah Israel kaminawk boih nuiah pahlonghaih to a sak; to hmuen to na hnuk moe, nang hoe boeh. Tipongah zaehaih tidoeh tawn ai kami ih athii to palong moe, David hum han na thuih loe? tiah a naa.
He took his life in his hands when he killed the Philistine, and the Lord brought about great salvation for the whole of Israel. You saw it and you were delighted, so why would you sin and spill innocent blood by killing David without having any reason?”
6 Saul mah Jonathan ih lok to tahngai moe, Angraeng loe hing baktih toengah, David to ka hum mak ai, tiah lokkamhaih a sak.
Saul accepted what Jonathan had to say, and promised with an oath: “I swear on the life of the Lord, he won't be put to death.”
7 To pongah Jonathan mah David to kawk moe, a thuih hoi ih loknawk boih to thuih pae. Jonathan mah David to Saul khaeah caeh haih moe, Saul khaeah canghniah oh ih baktih toengah ohsak let.
Later Jonathan called David and told him all that had been said. Then he took him to Saul, and David worked for Saul as he had before.
8 Misa angthawkhaih oh let; to pongah David loe caeh moe, Philistin kaminawk to tuk; kaminawk paroeai a hum pongah, misanawk loe anih hmaa hoiah cawnh o.
War broke out once again, and David went to fight the Philistines. He attacked them so forcefully that they ran away in defeat.
9 Saul angmah ih im ah anghnut naah, tayae to ban ah sinh, Angraeng khae hoi kasae muithla to a nuiah angzoh pongah, David mah anih hanah katoeng to kruek pae.
A while later an evil spirit from the Lord came on Saul while he was sitting in his house with his spear in his hand. As David played the lyre,
10 Saul mah David to tapang hoi nawnto takhawh hmaek hanah poek; David mah ayae taak ving pongah, Saul mah tayae hoiah tapang to takhawh vawk. To na qum ah David loe cawnh moe, loih ving.
Saul tried to pin David to the wall with the spear. David managed to dodge the spear which embedded itself in the wall. Then David escaped and ran away into the night.
11 Saul mah David to angang moe, anih to akhawn bangah hum hanah, David im ah kami to patoeh; toe David zu Mikal mah, na hinghaih loih thai hanah vaiduem na cawn ai nahaeloe, khawnbangah loe na dueh tih boeh, tiah a naa.
Saul sent some messengers to David's house to keep watch and kill him in the morning. But Michal, David's wife, warned him, “If you don't get away tonight, tomorrow you'll be killed.”
12 To pongah Mikal mah David to thokbuem hoiah anghumsak tathuk, to tiah anih loe cawnh moe, loih ving.
Michal lowered David down from a window, and he ran off, managing to escape.
13 Mikal mah kami ih krang to lak moe, iihhaih ahmuen ah suek pacoengah kahni hoiah ayaw hmoek; a lu thuem ah maeh mui to suek pae.
Then she took a home idol and laid it in the bed, put a goat hair wig on its head, and covered it with bedclothes.
14 David naeh hanah Saul mah kami patoeh naah, Mikal mah anih loe ngantui ai, tiah a naa.
When Saul sent the messengers to arrest David, Michal told them, “He's sick.”
15 To pacoengah Saul mah David khet hanah kaminawk to patoeh let bae; anih ka hum thai hanah, a iihkhun hoi nawnto kai khaeah na sin oh, tiah a naa.
Saul sent the messengers back to see David, saying, “Bring him to me in the bed so I can kill him.”
16 Toe patoeh ih kaminawk imthung ah akun o naah loe, khenah, sakcop ih krang to iihkhun nuiah oh pae lat; luhngoeng suekhaih ahmuen ah doeh maeh mui ni oh sut.
But when the messengers went into the bedroom, there was the idol in the bed with the goat hair wig on its head.
17 To naah Saul mah Mikal khaeah, Tipongah hae tiah nang ling moe, ka misa loisak hanah, na patoeh ving loe? tiah a naa.
“Why did you trick me like this—helping my enemy get away so he could escape?” Saul asked Michal. “He told me, ‘Get out of my way! I don't want to have to kill you!’” Michal replied.
18 David loe cawnh moe, loih pacoengah, Ramah ah Samuel khaeah caeh; Saul mah a nuiah sak ih hmuennawk boih to Samuel khaeah thuih pae. To pacoengah anih hoi Samuel loe Naioth avang ah caeh hoi moe, to ah oh hoi.
This is how David got away and escaped. He went to Samuel at Ramah and explained to him everything that Saul had done to him. Then he and Samuel went to stay in Naioth.
19 To lok to Saul khaeah thuih pae o; David loe Ramah vangpui peng thungah kaom Naioth avang ah oh, tiah thuih pae o.
When Saul got to hear that David was at Naioth in Ramah,
20 To pongah David naeh hanah Saul mah kaminawk to patoeh; toe Samuel loe zaehoikung ah angdoet moe, nawnto amkhueng tahmaanawk hoiah lok a thuih o, tiah nihcae mah hnuk o naah, Saul ih kaminawk nuiah Sithaw ih Muithla to angzoh, to naah nihcae mah doeh lok to taphong o toeng.
he sent messengers to arrest him. But when they saw a group of prophets prophesying with Samuel leading out, the Spirit of God came on Saul's messengers and they started prophesying too.
21 To kawng to Saul khaeah thuih pae o naah; anih mah kalah kaminawk to patoeh let; toe to kaminawk mah doeh lok taphong o toeng. Vaithumto haih ah Saul mah kaminawk to patoeh let; nihcae mah doeh lok to taphong o toeng.
Saul was told what had happened, so he sent more messengers, and they started prophesying as well.
22 To pacoengah anih loe hnukkhuem koek ah, Ramah vangpui ah caeh moe, Seku avang taeng ih vacong ah phak; to ah Samuel hoi David loe naa ah maw oh hoi? tiah a dueng. Nihcae mah, Khenah, nihnik loe Ramah vangpui peng thung ih Naioth avang ah oh hoi, tiah thuih pae o.
For the third time Saul sent messengers, and they also started prophesying.
23 To pongah Saul loe Ramah prae thung ih Naioth avang ah caeh; to naah anih nuiah doeh Sithaw ih Muithla to oh moe, loklam caeh nathung, Naioth avang pha ai karoek to anih mah lok to taphong.
In the end Saul went himself to Ramah and arrived at the large cistern at Secu. “Where are Samuel and David?” he asked. “At Naioth in Ramah,” someone told him. So Saul went on to Naioth at Ramah, but the Spirit of God even came on him, and he was prophesying as he walked along until he arrived in Naioth.
24 A khukbuennawk to angkhring moe, Samuel hmaa ah lok to thuih; to ahmuen ah aqum athun khukbuen om ai ah a iih; to pongah kaminawk mah, Saul doeh tahmaanawk salakah athum toeng maw? tiah thuih o.
Then Saul also took off his clothes and he too prophesied in Samuel's presence. Then he fell down and lay there naked all that day and all that night. That's why it is said, “Is Saul one of the prophets too?”
