1 Rehoboam loe Shekem ah caeh; Israel kaminawk boih loe anih to siangpahrang ah sak hanah caeh o.
Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had come to Shechem to make him king.
2 (To tamthang to Solomon siangpahrang khae hoi kacawn, ) Nabat capa Jeroboam mah a ohhaih ahmuen, Izip prae hoiah thaih naah, Izip prae hoi amlaem let.
When Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard of it (for he was yet in Egypt, where he had fled from the presence of King Solomon, and Jeroboam lived in Egypt;
3 Israel kaminawk mah Jeroboam to kawk hanah kami to patoeh o; Jeroboam hoi Israel kaminawk loe Rehoboam khaeah nawnto caeh o moe,
and they sent and called him), Jeroboam and all the assembly of Israel came, and spoke to Rehoboam, saying,
4 nampa mah kaicae hae paroeai hmuen kazih ang phawhsak; nampa khae hoi kazit parai ka phawh o ih hmuen, kaicae nuiah koeng ih hmuen kazit hae nang mah loe anghoepsak kue lai ah, to tiah nahaeloe na tok to kang sak pae o han, tiah a naa o.
“Your father made our yoke difficult. Now therefore make the hard service of your father, and his heavy yoke which he put on us, lighter, and we will serve you.”
5 Rehoboam mah, Amlaem oh loe, ni thumto pacoengah kai khaeah angzo o let ah, tiah a naa. To pongah to ih kaminawk loe amlaem o let.
He said to them, “Depart for three days, then come back to me.” So the people departed.
6 Rehoboam siangpahrang mah, ampa Solomon hing naah, a hmaa ah angdoe poekhaih kahoih paekkung, kacoehtanawk khaeah, Hae kaminawk hae kawbangmaw ka pathim han? tiah a dueng.
King Rehoboam took counsel with the old men who had stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, saying, “What counsel do you give me to answer these people?”
7 Nihcae mah, Nang loe vaihniah hae kaminawk ih tamna ah na oh moe, nihcae koehhaih to na paroi pae, nihcae han kahoih ah lok na pathim nahaeloe, hae kaminawk loe dungzan khoek to na tamna ah om o tih, tiah a naa o.
They replied, “If you will be a servant to this people today, and will serve them, and answer them with good words, then they will be your servants forever.”
8 Toe anih loe kacoehtanawk mah, thuih ih lok to tiah doeh sah ai, angmah hoi nawnto kaqoeng tahang, a hmaa ah toksah kaminawk to dueng lat.
But he abandoned the counsel of the old men which they had given him, and took counsel with the young men who had grown up with him, who stood before him.
9 Siangpahrang mah nihcae khaeah, Hae kaminawk mah, kai khaeah, Nampa mah kaicae nuiah phawhsak ih hmuen kazit hae anghoepsak kue lai ah, tiah ang naa o, hae tiah thui kaminawk hae, kawbangmaw ka pathim han, tiah a naa.
He said to them, “What counsel do you give, that we may answer these people who have spoken to me, saying, ‘Make the yoke that your father put on us lighter’?”
10 Angmah hoi huihto kaqoeng thendoengnawk mah anih khaeah, Nampa mah kaicae nuiah phawhsak ih hmuen kazit to, nang mah anghoepsak kue lai ah, tiah kathui hae kaminawk khaeah, Ka banpazung loe kampa ih kaeng pongah len kue tih.
The young men who had grown up with him said to him, “Tell these people who spoke to you, saying, ‘Your father made our yoke heavy, but make it lighter to us’—tell them, ‘My little finger is thicker than my father’s waist.
11 Kampa mah ang phawh o sak ih kazit hmuen pongah kazit kue hmuen to kang phawh o sak han; kampa mah quiboeng hoiah ang thuihtaek o, kai mah loe sataai hoiah kang thuihtaek o han, tiah pathim ah, tiah a naa o.
Now my father burdened you with a heavy yoke, but I will add to your yoke. My father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.’”
12 Siangpahrang mah ni thumto pacoengah angzoh o let hanah a thuih pae baktih toengah, Ni thumto oh pacoengah loe Jeroboam hoi kaminawk boih to Rehoboam khaeah angzoh o let.
So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king asked, saying, “Come to me again the third day.”
13 To naah siangpahrang loe kacoehtanawk mah thuih ih loknawk tiah doeh sah pae ai, to ih kaminawk khaeah kanaa parai ah lok to pathim pae;
The king answered the people roughly, and abandoned the counsel of the old men which they had given him,
14 thendoengnawk mah thuih o ih lok baktih toengah, to kaminawk khaeah, Kampa mah ang phawh o sak ih hmuen kazit pong kazit kue ah, kang phawh o sak han; kampa mah quiboeng hoiah ang boh o, toe kai mah loe sataai hoiah kang boh o han, tiah a naa.
and spoke to them according to the counsel of the young men, saying, “My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to your yoke. My father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.”
15 Tipongah siangpahrang mah prae kaminawk ih lok tahngaih han koeh ai tih nahaeloe, Angraeng mah Shiloh kami Ahijah patohhaih rang hoiah, Nebat capa Jeroboam khaeah Angraeng mah thuih ih lok akoepsak han ih ni hae tiah hmuen hae oh.
So the king did not listen to the people; for it was a thing brought about from the LORD, that he might establish his word, which the LORD spoke by Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.
16 Siangpahrang mah nihcae ih lok tahngai pae ai, tiah Israel kaminawk boih mah panoek o naah, siangpahrang khaeah; David khaeah taham timaw ka tawnh o moe, Jesse capa khaeah qawktoep han koi timaw ka tawnh o? Aw Israel kaminawk, nangmacae kahni im ah amlaem oh; Aw David, na im hae nang mah toep lai ah, tiah a naa o. To pongah Israel kaminawk loe angmacae im ah amlaem o.
When all Israel saw that the king did not listen to them, the people answered the king, saying, “What portion have we in David? We do not have an inheritance in the son of Jesse. To your tents, Israel! Now see to your own house, David.” So Israel departed to their tents.
17 Toe Judah vangpuinawk thungah kaom Israel kaminawk loe Rehoboam mah ni uk vop.
But as for the children of Israel who lived in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.
18 Rehoboam siangpahrang mah tamut kokhaih bangah zaehoikung Adoram to patoeh, toe anih to Israel kaminawk boih mah thlung hoiah vah o maat. Rehoboam siangpahrang angmah to loe, angmah ih hrang lakok nuiah karangah angthueng moe, Jerusalem vangpui ah cawnh.
Then King Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was over the men subject to forced labor; and all Israel stoned him to death with stones. King Rehoboam hurried to get himself up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.
19 To pongah Israel kaminawk loe, David imthung takoh nuiah vaihni ni khoek to misa ah oh o.
So Israel rebelled against David’s house to this day.
20 Jeroboam amlaem let boeh, tiah Israel kaminawk boih mah thaih o naah, rangpui amkhuenghaih ahmuen ah anih to kawk o moe, Israel kaminawk boih ukkung siangpahrang ah suek o; Judah acaeng khue ai ah loe, David ih imthung takoh hnukbang kami midoeh om ai.
When all Israel heard that Jeroboam had returned, they sent and called him to the congregation, and made him king over all Israel. There was no one who followed David’s house, except for the tribe of Judah only.
21 Rehoboam Jerusalem vangpui ah phak naah, Israel kaminawk loe misa to tuk moe, prae to Solomon capa Rehoboam ban thungah phaksak let hanah, Judah imthung takoh kaminawk hoi Benjamin imthung takoh kaminawk boih ahmuen maeto ah amkhuengsak; a qoih ih misatuh thaih kami sang cumvaito pacoeng, sang quitazetto oh o.
When Rehoboam had come to Jerusalem, he assembled all the house of Judah and the tribe of Benjamin, a hundred and eighty thousand chosen men who were warriors, to fight against the house of Israel, to bring the kingdom again to Rehoboam the son of Solomon.
22 Toe Sithaw ih kami Shemaiah khaeah Sithaw ih lok hae tiah angzoh,
But the word of God came to Shemaiah the man of God, saying,
23 Solomon capa, Judah siangpahrang khaeah, Judah hoi Benjamin imthung takohnawk boih, kanghmat kaminawk boih khaeah,
“Speak to Rehoboam the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and to all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and to the rest of the people, saying,
24 Angraeng mah hae tiah thuih; Nam nawkamya Israel kaminawk tuk hanah caeh o tahang hmah; kami boih angmah im ah amlaem o nasoe; kaimah ni hae hmuennawk hae ka sak, tiah thui pae oh, tiah a naa. To pongah nihcae mah Angraeng ih lok to tahngaih o moe, Angraeng mah thuih ih lok baktih toengah, angmacae im ah amlaem o let.
‘The LORD says, “You shall not go up or fight against your brothers, the children of Israel. Everyone return to his house; for this thing is from me.”’” So they listened to the LORD’s word, and returned and went their way, according to the LORD’s word.
25 To pacoengah Jeroboam mah Ephraim mae nuiah, Shekem vangpui to sak moe, to vangpui thungah oh; to vangpui hoiah caeh moe, Penuel vangpui to a sak.
Then Jeroboam built Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim, and lived in it; and he went out from there and built Penuel.
26 Jeroboam mah siangpahrang ukhaih prae loe David imthung takoh khaeah paek let tih boeh;
Jeroboam said in his heart, “Now the kingdom will return to David’s house.
27 hae kaminawk mah angbawnhaih paek hanah, Angraeng ih im ohhaih Jerusalem ah caeh o nahaeloe, hae kaminawk loe angmacae ih angraeng, Judah siangpahrang, Rehoboam khaeah amlaem o let tih; kai hae na hum o ueloe, Rehoboam siangpahrang khaeah amlaem o let tih, tiah palung thungah a poek.
If this people goes up to offer sacrifices in the LORD’s house at Jerusalem, then the heart of this people will turn again to their lord, even to Rehoboam king of Judah; and they will kill me, and return to Rehoboam king of Judah.”
28 To pongah kaminawk khaeah lokdueng pacoengah, Siangpahrang mah sui hoiah maitaw caa krang hnetto a sak; to pacoengah anih mah kaminawk khaeah, Jerusalem vangpui ah na caeh o haih pop parai boeh; Aw Israel kaminawk, Izip prae thung hoiah nangcae zaehoikung sithaw hnik loe, hae ah oh hoi boeh, tiah a naa.
So the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold; and he said to them, “It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem. Look and behold your gods, Israel, which brought you up out of the land of Egypt!”
29 Maeto loe Bethel ah suek moe, kalah maeto loe Dan ah a suek.
He set the one in Bethel, and the other he put in Dan.
30 Hae tiah a sak ih hmuen loe zae haih ah oh; kaminawk loe to ah kaom sithaw to bok hanah, Dan karoek to caeh o.
This thing became a sin, for the people went even as far as Dan to worship before the one there.
31 Jeroboam loe hmuensang ah bokhaih imnawk to sak moe, Levi acaeng na ai, kahnaem koek kami rumram to qaima ah a suek.
He made houses of high places, and made priests from among all the people, who were not of the sons of Levi.
32 Judah prae ah sak o ih poih baktih toengah, khrah tazetto haih ni hatlaipangato naah, hmaicam pongah angbawnhaih to a sak. Bethel ah doeh to tiah sak ih maitaw caa krang khaeah angbawnhaih to a sak; hmuensang ah toksak hanah tokpaek ih qaimanawk to, Bethel ah a suek.
Jeroboam ordained a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, like the feast that is in Judah, and he went up to the altar. He did so in Bethel, sacrificing to the calves that he had made, and he placed in Bethel the priests of the high places that he had made.
33 A poekhaih baktiah a qoih ih khrah tazetto haih ni hatlaipangato naah, Bethel ah a sak ih hmaicam pongah, angbawnhaih to sak; to tiah Israelnawk hanah poih to a sak pae pacoengah, hmaicam nuiah angbawnhaih to sak moe, hmuihoih doeh a thlaek.
He went up to the altar which he had made in Bethel on the fifteenth day in the eighth month, even in the month which he had devised of his own heart; and he ordained a feast for the children of Israel, and went up to the altar to burn incense.
