1 Ug sa pag-abut na ni Festo sa iyang lalawigan, tulo ka adlaw tapus niini siya mitungas ngadto sa Jerusalem gikan sa Cesarea.
Festus, having entered on his duties as governor of the province, two days later went up from Caesarea to Jerusalem.
2 Ug ang mga sacerdote nga punoan ug ang kadagkuan sa mga Judio nakigsulti kaniya batok kang Pablo. Ug sila nangamuyo kaniya,
The High Priests and the leading men among the Jews immediately made representations to him against Paul, and begged him--
3 agig utang kabubut-on, nga unta iyang ipadala si Pablo sa Jerusalem, kay gilaraw man ugod nila ang pagbanhig aron sa pagpatay kaniya diha sa dalan.
asking it as a favour, to Paul's prejudice--to have him brought to Jerusalem. They were planning an ambush to kill him on the way.
4 Apan si Festo mitubag nga si Pablo gibantayan pag-ayo didto sa Cesarea, ug nga siya gayud naghunahuna sa pag-adto didto sa dili madugay.
Festus, however, replied that Paul was in custody in Caesarea, and that he was himself going there very soon.
5 "Busa," matud niya, "palugsonga didto ang inyong mga punoan uban kanako, ug kon may sala man ugaling kanang tawhana, ipasumbong siya nila."
"Therefore let those of you," he said, "who can come, go down with me, and impeach the man, if there is anything amiss in him."
6 Ug sa nakapabilin na siya uban kanila sa wala molabaw sa walo o napulo ka adlaw, siya milugsong ngadto sa Cesarea. Ug sa pagkasunod nga adlaw siya milingkod sa lingkoranan sa hukmanan ug nagsugo siya nga paatubangon si Pablo.
After a stay of eight or ten days in Jerusalem--not more--he went down to Caesarea; and the next day, taking his seat on the tribunal, he ordered Paul to be brought in.
7 Ug sa pag-abut na niya, gialirongan siya sa mga Judio nga milugsong gikan sa Jerusalem, nga mipasaka batok kaniya sa daghang mga dagkung sumbong nga dili na nila arang kapanghimatud-an.
Upon Paul's arrival, the Jews who had come down from Jerusalem stood round him, and brought many grave charges against him which they were unable to substantiate.
8 Ug sa iyang pagpanalipod si Pablo miingon, "Wala akoy nahimong paglapas batok sa kasugoan sa mga Judio, o batok sa templo, o batok kang Cesar."
But, in reply, Paul said, "Neither against the Jewish Law, nor against the Temple, nor against Caesar, have I committed any offence whatever."
9 Apan kay gitinguha man ni Festo ang pagpahimuot sa mga Judio, siya miingon kang Pablo, "Buot ka bang motungas sa Jerusalem, ug sa atubangan ko adto ikaw didto hukmi bahin niining maong mga sumbong?"
Then Festus, being anxious to gratify the Jews, asked Paul, "Are you willing to go up to Jerusalem, and there stand your trial before me on these charges?"
10 Apan si Pablo mitubag kaniya, "Ako ania nagabarug sa atubangan sa hukmanan ni Cesar, diin kinahanglan anhi ako hukmi. Ngadto sa mga Judio wala akoy nahimong paglapas sumala sa imo nang nasayran pag-ayo.
"I am standing before Caesar's tribunal," replied Paul, "where alone I ought to be tried. The Jews have no real ground of complaint against me, as in fact you yourself are beginning to see more clearly.
11 Ug kon ugaling sad-an man ako ug may nabuhat nga tungod niana angayan akong patyon, dili ako molikay sa kamatayon. Apan kon wala may mga hinungdan kining ilang mga sumbong batok kanako, walay bisan kinsa nga makahimo sa pagtugyan kanako ngadto kanila. Kang Cesar nagadangop ako karon."
If, however, I have done wrong and have committed any offence for which I deserve to die, I do not ask to be excused that penalty. But if there is no truth in what these men allege against me, no one has the right to give me up to them as a favour. I appeal to Caesar."
12 Ug si Festo, tapus makigsulti sa iyang mga magtatambag, mitubag, "Midangop ikaw kang Cesar; kang Cesar igaadto ikaw."
Then, after conferring with the Council, Festus replied, "To Caesar you have appealed: to Caesar you shall go."
13 Ug sa paglabay na sa pipila ka adlaw, si Agripa nga hari ug si Bernice nahiabut sa Cesarea aron sa pagyukbo kang Festo.
A short time after this, Agrippa the king and Bernice came to Caesarea to pay a complimentary visit to Festus;
14 Ug kay nagpabilin man sila didto sulod sa daghang mga adlaw, sa atubangan sa hari ang asunto ni Pablo gibutyag ni Festo nga nag-ingon, "Aniay usa ka tawo dinhi nga gibiyaang binilanggo ni Felix.
and, during their rather long stay, Festus laid Paul's case before the king. "There is a man here," he said, "whom Felix left a prisoner,
15 Ug sa didto ako sa Jerusalem, ang mga sacerdote nga punoan ug mga anciano sa mga Judio mihatag kanakog kasayuran mahitungod kaniya, ug nangayo nga kahukman siyag silot.
about whom, when I went to Jerusalem, the High Priests and the Elders of the Jews made representations to me, begging that sentence might be pronounced against him.
16 Gitubag ko sila nga dili batasan sa mga Romanhon ang pagtugyan kang bisan kinsa aron pagasilotan samtang ang sinumbong wala pa ikapaatubang sa mga magsusumbong, ug wala pa kahatagig higayon sa pagpanalipod sa iyang kaugalingon labut sa sumbong nga gipasaka batok kaniya.
My reply was that it is not the custom among the Romans to give up any one for punishment before the accused has had his accusers face to face, and has had an opportunity of defending himself against the charge which has been brought against him.
17 Busa, sa nagkatigum na sila dinhi, wala ako maglangan; hinonoa sa pagkasunod nga adlaw milingkod ako sa akong lingkoranan sa hukmanan ug nagsugo nga paatubangon ang tawo.
"When, therefore, a number of them came here, the next day I took my seat on the tribunal, without any loss of time, and ordered the man to be brought in.
18 Apan sa pagpanindog na sa iyang mga magsusumbong, wala silay gikasumbong batok kaniya nga pagkadautan ingon sa akong gidahum.
But, when his accusers stood up, they did not charge him with the misdemeanours of which I had been suspecting him.
19 Diha hinooy ilang gipakiglalisan batok kaniya mahitungod sa ilang kaugalingong patootoo ug mahitungod sa usa ka Jesus nga patay na, apan gilabanan ni Pablo nga kono buhi.
But they quarrelled with him about certain matters connected with their own religion, and about one Jesus who had died, but--so Paul persistently maintained--is now alive.
20 Ug sanglit nalibog na man ako kon unsaon pa sa pag-usisa sa maong mga kutsokutso, nangutana ako kon buot ba siya moadto sa Jerusalem ug didto pahusay mahitungod niining mga butanga.
I was at a loss how to investigate such questions, and asked Paul whether he would care to go to Jerusalem and there stand his trial on these matters.
21 Apan kay gipangayo man ni Pablo nga magpabilin siya nga binilanggo aron pahukom sa emperador, nagsugo ako nga pabantayan siya hangtud ikapadala ko siya ngadto kang Cesar."
But when Paul appealed to have his case kept for the Emperor's decision, I ordered him to be kept in prison until I could send him up to Caesar."
22 Ug si Agripa miingon kang Festo, "Buot kong pamatian kining tawhana." "Ugma," matud niya, "pamation mo siya."
"I should like to hear the man myself," said Agrippa. "to-morrow," replied Festus, "you shall." Accordingly, the next day, Agrippa and Bernice came in state
23 Ug tuod sa pagkasunod nga adlaw, si Agripa ug si Bernice miabut uban sa dakung pagpasundayag, ug misulod sila sa hawan nga husayanan, kinuyogan sa mga koronil ug sa mga kadagkuan sa siyudad. Ug tuman sa sugo ni Festo, gipaatubang si Pablo.
and took their seats in the Judgement Hall, attended by the Tribunes and the men of high rank in the city; and, at the command of Festus, Paul was brought in.
24 Ug si Festo miingon, "Hari Agripa, ug tanan kamo nga ania dinhi uban kanamo, nakita ninyo kining tawhana bahin kang kinsa ang tibuok panon sa mga Judio nanaghangyo kanako, didto sa Jerusalem ug dinhi usab, nanagsinggit nga kinahanglan dili siya tugotan nga mabuhi pa.
Then Festus said, "King Agrippa and all who are present with us, you see here the man about whom the whole nation of the Jews made suit to me, both in Jerusalem and here, crying out that he ought not to live any longer.
25 Apan akong nasuta nga wala siyay nabuhat nga takus sa kamatayon; ug sanglit siya gayud midangop man sa emperador, gihukman ko nga ipadala ko siya ngadto kaniya.
I could not discover that he had done anything for which he deserved to die; but as he has himself appealed to the Emperor, I have decided to send him to Rome.
26 Apan wala akoy bisan unsa nga ikasulat sa akong agalon mahitungod niini kaniya. Busa gipaatubang ko siya kaninyo, labi na gayud kanimo, Hari Agripa, aron nga tapus nato siya masukitsukit, aduna na akoy ikasulat.
I have nothing very definite, however, to tell our Sovereign about him. So I have brought the man before you all--and especially before you, King Agrippa--that after he has been examined I may find something which I can put into writing.
27 Kay alang kanako daw dili makatarunganon ang pagpadalag binilanggo nga wala lamay pagpaila sa mga sumbong batok kaniya."
For, when sending a prisoner to Rome, it seems to me to be absurd not to state the charges against him."
