হিতোপদেশ 29
1 বহুবার ভর্ৎসিত হওয়ার পরও যে ঘাড় শক্ত করে রাখে সে হঠাৎ করে বিনষ্ট হয়ে যাবে—এর কোনও প্রতিকার নেই।
He that being often reproved hardeneth his neck shall suddenly be broken, and that without remedy.
2 ধার্মিকেরা যখন সমৃদ্ধশালী হয়, জনগণ তখন আনন্দ করে; দুষ্টেরা যখন শাসন করে, জনগণ তখন গভীর আর্তনাদ করে।
When the righteous are increased, the people rejoice; but when the wicked beareth rule, the people sigh.
3 যে মানুষ প্রজ্ঞাকে ভালোবাসে সে তার বাবাকে আনন্দিত করে, কিন্তু বেশ্যাদের দোসর তার ধনসম্পত্তি অপচয় করে ফেলে।
Whoso loveth wisdom rejoiceth his father; but he that keepeth company with harlots wasteth his substance.
4 ন্যায়বিচার দ্বারা রাজা দেশকে স্থিরতা দেন, কিন্তু যারা ঘুষের প্রতি প্রলুব্ধ তারা দেশ লণ্ডভণ্ড করে ফেলে।
The king by justice establisheth the land; but he that exacteth gifts overthroweth it.
5 যারা তাদের প্রতিবেশীদের স্তাবকতা করে তারা নিজেদের পায়ের জন্যই ফাঁদ পাতে।
A man that flattereth his neighbour spreadeth a net for his steps.
6 অনিষ্টকারীরা তাদের নিজেদের পাপ দ্বারাই ফাঁদে পড়ে, কিন্তু ধার্মিকেরা আনন্দে চিৎকার করে ও খুশি থাকে।
In the transgression of an evil man there is a snare; but the righteous doth sing and rejoice.
7 ধার্মিকেরা দরিদ্রদের ন্যায়বিচার দেওয়ার কথা ভাবে, কিন্তু দুষ্টদের এই ধরনের কোনও উদ্বেগ নেই।
The righteous taketh knowledge of the cause of the poor; the wicked understandeth not knowledge.
8 বিদ্রুপকারীরা নগরে উত্তেজনা ছড়ায়, কিন্তু জ্ঞানবানেরা ক্রোধ প্রশমিত করে।
Scornful men set a city in a blaze; but wise men turn away wrath.
9 জ্ঞানবান মানুষ যদি মূর্খকে দরবারে নিয়ে যায়, তবে মূর্খ তর্জনগর্জন ও উপহাস করে, ও সেখানে শান্তি বজায় থাকে না।
If a wise man contendeth with a foolish man, whether he be angry or laugh, there will be no rest.
10 রক্তপিপাসু লোকেরা সৎলোককে ঘৃণা করে ও ন্যায়পরায়ণ মানুষদের হত্যা করতে চায়।
The men of blood hate him that is sincere; and as for the upright, they seek his life.
11 মূর্খেরা তাদের সব ক্রোধ প্রকাশ করে ফেলে, কিন্তু জ্ঞানবানেরা শেষ পর্যন্ত তা প্রশমিত করে।
A fool spendeth all his spirit; but a wise man stilleth it within him.
12 শাসক যদি মিথ্যা কথা শোনেন, তবে তাঁর কর্মকর্তারা দুষ্ট হয়ে পড়ে।
If a ruler hearkeneth to falsehood, all his servants are wicked.
13 দরিদ্রদের ও অত্যাচারীদের মধ্যে এই সাদৃশ্য আছে: সদাপ্রভুই উভয়ের চোখে দৃষ্টিশক্তি দিয়েছেন।
The poor man and the oppressor meet together; the LORD giveth light to the eyes of them both.
14 রাজা যদি দরিদ্রদের প্রতি সুবিচার করেন, তবে তাঁর সিংহাসন চিরকালের জন্য স্থির থাকবে।
The king that faithfully judgeth the poor, his throne shall be established for ever.
15 লাঠি ও তীব্র ভর্ৎসনা প্রজ্ঞা দান করে, কিন্তু সন্তানকে যদি শাসন না করে ছেড়ে দেওয়া হয় তবে সে তার মায়ের মর্যাদাহানি ঘটায়।
The rod and reproof give wisdom; but a child left to himself causeth shame to his mother.
16 দুষ্টেরা যখন সমৃদ্ধশালী হয়, তখন পাপও বৃদ্ধি পায়, কিন্তু ধার্মিকেরা তাদের সর্বনাশ দেখতে পাবে।
When the wicked are increased, transgression increaseth; but the righteous shall gaze upon their fall.
17 তোমার সন্তানদের শাসন করো, ও তারা তোমাকে শান্তি দেবে; তারা তোমার জীবনে প্রত্যাশিত আনন্দ নিয়ে আসবে।
Correct thy son, and he will give thee rest; yea, he will give delight unto thy soul.
18 যেখানে কোনও প্রত্যাদেশ নেই, সেখানে জনগণ নিয়ন্ত্রণহীন হয়ে যায়; কিন্তু ধন্য তারাই যারা প্রজ্ঞার শিক্ষায় মনোযোগ দেয়।
Where there is no vision, the people cast off restraint; but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.
19 শুধু কথা বলে দাসেদের সংশোধন করা যায় না; যদিও তারা বোঝে, তবুও তারা মনোযোগ দেয় না।
A servant will not be corrected by words; for though he understand, there will be no response.
20 এমন কাউকে কি দেখেছ যে তাড়াহুড়ো করে কথা বলে? তাদের চেয়ে বরং একজন মূর্খের বেশি আশা আছে।
Seest thou a man that is hasty in his words? there is more hope for a fool than for him.
21 যে দাসকে ছেলেবেলা থেকে প্রশ্রয় দেওয়া হয়েছে সে শেষ সময় শোক নিয়ে আসবে।
He that delicately bringeth up his servant from a child shall have him become master at the last.
22 ক্রুদ্ধ লোক বিবাদ বাধায়, উগ্রস্বভাব বিশিষ্ট লোক প্রচুর পাপ করে বসে।
An angry man stirreth up strife, and a wrathful man aboundeth in transgression.
23 অহংকার একজন লোককে নিচে নামিয়ে আনে, কিন্তু নম্রাত্মা মানুষ সম্মান লাভ করে।
A man's pride shall bring him low; but he that is of a lowly spirit shall attain to honour.
24 চোরেদের সহযোগীরা তাদের নিজেদেরই শত্রু; তাদের শপথ করতে বলা হয় ও তারা সত্যের পক্ষে সাক্ষ্য দেওয়ার সাহস পায় না।
Whoso is partner with a thief hateth his own soul: he heareth the adjuration and uttereth nothing.
25 মানুষের ভয় ফাঁদ হয়ে দাঁড়ায়, কিন্তু যে সদাপ্রভুতে নির্ভর করে সে নিরাপদ থাকে।
The fear of man bringeth a snare; but whoso putteth his trust in the LORD shall be set up on high.
26 অনেকেই শাসকের প্রিয়পাত্র হয়ে থাকতে চায়, কিন্তু সদাপ্রভুর কাছেই মানুষ ন্যায়বিচার পায়।
Many seek the ruler's favour; but a man's judgment cometh from the LORD.
27 ধার্মিকেরা অসাধুদের ঘৃণা করে; দুষ্টেরা ন্যায়পরায়ণদের ঘৃণা করে।
An unjust man is an abomination to the righteous; and he that is upright in the way is an abomination to the wicked.
