হিতোপদেশ 27
1 আগামীকালের বিষয়ে গর্ব কোরো না, কারণ একদিন কী নিয়ে আসবে তা তুমি জানো না।
Boast not thyself of to-morrow; For thou knowest not what a day may bring forth!
2 অন্য কেউ তোমার প্রশংসা করুক, ও তোমার নিজের মুখ তা না করুক; একজন বহিরাগত মানুষই করুক, ও তোমার নিজের ঠোঁট তা না করুক।
Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth; A stranger, and not thine own lips.
3 পাথর ভারী ও বালি এক বোঝা, কিন্তু মূর্খের প্ররোচনা উভয়ের চেয়েও বেশি ভারী।
A stone is heavy and sand is weighty; But a fool's wrath is heavier than both.
4 ক্রোধ নিষ্ঠুর ও ক্ষিপ্ততা অপ্রতিরোধ্য, কিন্তু ঈর্ষার সামনে কে দাঁড়াতে পারে?
Wrath is cruel, and anger overwhelming; But who is able to stand before jealousy?
5 গুপ্ত ভালোবাসার চেয়ে প্রকাশ্য ভর্ৎসনা ভালো।
Better is open rebuke Than love kept concealed.
6 বন্ধুর আঘাতকে বিশ্বাস করা যায়, কিন্তু শত্রু চুমুর সংখ্যা বৃদ্ধি করে।
Faithful are the wounds of a friend; But the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.
7 যার পেট ভরা আছে সে মৌচাকের মধু ঘৃণা করে, কিন্তু ক্ষুধার্ত মানুষের কাছে তেতো জিনিসও মিষ্টি লাগে।
He who is fed to the full loatheth the honeycomb; But to the hungry any bitter thing is sweet.
8 যে ঘর ছেড়ে পালায় তার দশা নীড় ছেড়ে উড়ে যাওয়া পাখির মতো।
As a bird that wandereth from its nest, So is a man who wandereth from his place.
9 সুগন্ধি ও ধূপ হৃদয়ে আনন্দ নিয়ে আসে, ও বন্ধুর মধুরতা তাদের আন্তরিক পরামর্শ থেকে উৎপন্ন হয়।
Oil and perfume gladden the heart; Sweet also is one's friend by hearty counsel.
10 তোমার নিজের বন্ধুকে বা তোমার পারিবারিক বন্ধুকে পরিত্যাগ কোরো না, ও যখন দুর্যোগ ঘনিয়ে আসে তখন তোমার আত্মীয়স্বজনের বাড়িতে যেয়ো না— দূরবর্তী আত্মীয়ের চেয়ে নিকটবর্তী প্রতিবেশী ভালো।
Thine own friend and thy father's friend forsake not; And go not into thy brother's house in the day of thy calamity. Better is a neighbor that is near, than a brother far off.
11 হে আমার বাছা, জ্ঞানবান হও, ও আমার হৃদয়কে আনন্দিত করে তোলো; তবেই তো আমি তাকে উত্তর দিতে পারব যে আমাকে অবজ্ঞা করেছে।
Be wise, my son, and make my heart glad, That I may give an answer to him that reproacheth me.
12 বিচক্ষণ মানুষেরা বিপদ দেখে কোথাও আশ্রয় নেয়, কিন্তু অনভিজ্ঞ লোকেরা এগিয়ে যায় ও শাস্তি পায়।
A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself; The simple pass on, and are punished.
13 যে আগন্তুকের হয়ে জামিন রাখে তার কাপড়চোপড় নিয়ে নাও; যদি কোনও বহিরাগতের জন্য তা করা হয়েছে তবে তা বন্ধক রেখে নাও।
Take his garment who is surety for another; Yea, take a pledge of him who is bound for a stranger.
14 যদি কেউ ভোরবেলায় তাদের প্রতিবেশীকে জোর গলায় আশীর্বাদ করে, তবে তা অভিশাপরূপেই গণ্য হবে।
He who blesseth his neighbor with a loud voice, rising early for it, It shall be accounted to him as a curse.
15 কলহপ্রিয়া স্ত্রী ঝড়বৃষ্টির দিনে ফুটো ছাদ থেকে ফোঁটায় ফোঁটায় পড়া জলের মতো;
A continual dropping in a very rainy day And a quarrelsome wife are alike.
16 তাকে সংযত করার অর্থ বাতাসকে সংযত করা বা হাতের মুঠোয় তেল ধরে রাখা।
He who restraineth her restraineth the wind; And his right hand layeth hold of oil.
17 লোহা যেভাবে লোহাকে শান দেয়, মানুষও সেভাবে অন্যজনকে শান দেয়।
Iron sharpeneth iron; So one man sharpeneth the face of another.
18 যে ডুমুর গাছ পাহারা দেয় সে তার ফল খাবে, যারা তাদের প্রভুকে রক্ষা করে তারা সম্মানিত হবে।
He that watcheth the fig-tree shall eat its fruit; So he that is careful for his master shall come to honor.
19 জল যেভাবে মুখমণ্ডল প্রতিফলিত করে, মানুষের জীবনও সেভাবে অন্তর প্রতিফলিত করে।
As in water face answereth to face, So doth the heart of man to man.
The realms of the dead are never full; So the eyes of man are never satisfied. (Sheol h7585)
21 রুপোর জন্য গলনপাত্র ও সোনার জন্য হাপর, কিন্তু মানুষ তাদের প্রশংসা দ্বারাই প্রমাণিত হয়।
The refining-pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold; So let a man be to the mouth that giveth him praise.
22 তুমি যতই মূর্খকে হামানদিস্তায় ফেলে পেষাই করো, মুষল দিয়ে শস্যমর্দন করার মতো তাদের পেষাই করো, তুমি তাদের জীবন থেকে মূর্খতা দূর করতে পারবে না।
Though thou shouldst beat a fool in a mortar, Among bruised wheat, with a pestle, Yet will not his folly depart from him.
23 তোমার মেষপালের দশা জানার বিষয়ে নিশ্চিত থেকো, যত্নসহকারে তোমার পশুপালের প্রতি মনোযোগ দিয়ো;
Be thou diligent to know the state of thy flocks, And look well to thy herds!
24 কারণ ধনসম্পত্তি চিরকাল স্থায়ী হয় না, ও মুকুটও পুরুষানুক্রমে নিরাপদ থাকে না।
For riches last not for ever; Not even a crown endureth from generation to generation.
25 যখন খড় সরিয়ে নেওয়া হবে ও নতুন চারা আবির্ভূত হবে এবং পাহাড়ের গা থেকে ঘাস সংগ্রহ করা হবে,
The hay disappeareth, and the tender grass showeth itself, And the herbage of the mountains is gathered in.
26 তখন মেষশাবকেরা তোমার পোশাকের জোগান দেবে, ও ছাগলেরা ক্ষেতের দাম চোকাবে।
The lambs are thy clothing, And the goats the price of thy field.
27 তোমার পরিবারের লোকজনকে খাওয়ানোর জন্য ও তোমার দাসীদের পুষ্টি জোগানোর জন্য তুমি যথেষ্ট পরিমাণ ছাগলের দুধ পাবে।
There is goat's milk enough for thy food, For the food of thy household, And for the sustenance of thy maidens.
