1 এগুলি শলোমনের লেখা আরও কিছু হিতোপদেশ, যেগুলি যিহূদারাজ হিষ্কিয়ের লোকজন সংকলিত করেছিলেন:
These also are proverbs of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah, king of Judah, collected.
2 কোনও বিষয় গোপন রাখা ঈশ্বরের পক্ষে গৌরবজনক; কোনও বিষয় খুঁজে বের করা রাজাদের পক্ষে গৌরবজনক।
It is the glory of God to conceal a thing; But it is the glory of kings to search out a matter.
3 আকাশমণ্ডল যত উঁচু ও পৃথিবী যত গভীর, রাজাদের অন্তরও তেমনই অজ্ঞেয়।
As the heavens for their height, And as the earth for its depth, So is the heart of kings unsearchable!
4 রুপো থেকে খাদ বের করে দাও, ও রৌপ্যকার এক পাত্র তৈরি করতে পারবে;
Take away the dross from the silver, And there will come forth a vessel for the founder;
5 রাজার উপস্থিতি থেকে দুষ্ট কর্মকর্তাদের দূর করে দাও, ও তাঁর সিংহাসন ধার্মিকতার মাধ্যমে সুপ্রতিষ্ঠিত হবে।
Take away the wicked man from the presence of the king, And his throne will be established by righteousness.
6 রাজার সামনে নিজেকে মহিমান্বিত কোরো না, ও তাঁর বিশিষ্টজনেদের মধ্যে স্থান পাওয়ার দাবি জানিয়ো না;
Put not thyself forth in the presence of the king, Nor set thyself in the place of the great;
7 তাঁর গণ্যমান্য ব্যক্তিদের সামনে তোমাকে খেলো করার চেয়ে ভালো হয়, যদি তিনি তোমাকে বলেন, “এখানে উঠে এসো।” তুমি স্বচক্ষে যা দেখেছ
For better is it that one should say to thee, “Come up hither!” Than that he should put thee in a lower place, In the presence of the prince whom thine eyes behold.
8 তাড়াহুড়ো করে দরবারে তা নিয়ে এসো না, কারণ তোমার প্রতিবেশী যদি তোমায় লজ্জায় ফেলে দেয়, তবে শেষে তুমি কী করবে?
Go not forth hastily to engage in a suit, Lest thou know not what to do in the end of it, When thine adversary hath put thee to shame.
9 তোমার প্রতিবেশীকে যদি তুমি দরবারে টেনে নিয়ে যাও, তবে অন্য কারোর আস্থা ভঙ্গ কোরো না,
Maintain thy cause with thine adversary, But reveal not another's secret;
10 তা না হলে যে একথা শুনবে সে তোমাকে অপমান করবে ও তোমার বিরুদ্ধে ওঠা অভিযোগ বজায় থাকবে।
Lest he that heareth it put thee to shame, And thy infamy depart not from thee.
11 ন্যায়সংগতভাবে দেওয়া রায় রুপোর ডালিতে সাজানো সোনার আপেলের মতো।
A word spoken in season Is like apples of gold in figured-work of silver.
12 শ্রবণশীল কানের কাছে জ্ঞানবান বিচারকের ভর্ৎসনা কানের সোনার দুল বা খাঁটি সোনার এক অলংকারের মতো।
As a ring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold, So is a wise reprover to an attentive ear.
13 যারা নির্ভরযোগ্য দূত পাঠায়, তাদের কাছে সে ফসল কাটার মরশুমে পাওয়া হিমশীতল পানীয়ের মতো: সে তার মালিকের প্রাণ জুড়ায়।
As the cold of snow in the time of harvest, So is a faithful messenger to them that send him; For he refresheth the spirit of his masters.
14 যে সেইসব উপহারের বিষয়ে অহংকার করে যা কখনও দেওয়া হয়নি সে বৃষ্টিবিহীন মেঘ ও বাতাসের মতো।
As clouds and wind without rain, So is the man that boasteth falsely of giving.
15 ধৈর্যের মাধ্যমে শাসককে প্ররোচিত করা যায়, ও অমায়িক জিভ অস্থি ভেঙে দিতে পারে।
By long forbearing is a prince appeased; And a soft tongue breaketh bones.
16 যদি তুমি মধু পাও, তবে যথেষ্ট পরিমাণে খাও— প্রচুর পরিমাণে খেলে তুমি তা বমি করে ফেলবে।
Hast thou found honey? eat what is sufficient for thee, Lest thou be surfeited with it, and vomit it up.
17 তোমার প্রতিবেশীর বাড়িতে কদাচিৎ পা রেখো— ঘনঘন সেখানে যাও, ও তারা তোমাকে ঘৃণা করবে।
Let thy foot be seldom in the house of thy friend, Lest he be surfeited with thee and hate thee.
18 যে প্রতিবেশীর বিরুদ্ধে মিথ্যা সাক্ষ্য দেয় সে গদা বা তরোয়াল বা ধারালো তিরের মতো।
A battle-hammer, and a sword, and a sharp arrow, Is the man who beareth false witness against his neighbor.
19 সংকটকালে বিশ্বাসঘাতকের উপর নির্ভর করা ভাঙা দাঁত বা খোঁড়া পায়ের উপর নির্ভর করার মতো বিষয়।
As a broken tooth, and a wavering foot, So is trust in an unfaithful man in time of trouble.
20 যার অন্তর ভারাক্রান্ত, তার কাছে যে গান গায় সে সেই মানুষটির মতো, যে শীতকালে অন্যের কাপড় কেড়ে নেয়, বা ক্ষতস্থানে সিরকা ঢেলে দেয়।
As he that taketh off a garment on a cold day, As vinegar upon nitre, So is he that singeth songs to a heavy heart.
21 তোমার শত্রু যদি ক্ষুধার্ত, তবে খাওয়ার জন্য তাকে খাদ্য দাও; সে যদি তৃষ্ণার্ত, তবে পান করার জন্য তাকে জল দাও।
If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; And if he be thirsty, give him water to drink;
22 এরকম করলে, তুমি তার মাথায় জ্বলন্ত কয়লার স্তূপ চাপিয়ে দেবে ও সদাপ্রভু তোমাকে পুরস্কৃত করবেন।
For thou wilt heap coals of fire upon his head, And the LORD will reward thee.
23 যে চাতুর্যপূর্ণ জিভ সন্ত্রাসিত দৃষ্টি উৎপন্ন করে তা এমন উত্তুরে বাতাসের মতো, যা অপ্রত্যাশিত বৃষ্টি নিয়ে আসে।
As the north wind bringeth forth rain, So a backbiting tongue maketh an angry countenance.
24 কলহপ্রিয়া স্ত্রীর সঙ্গে এক বাড়িতে থাকার চেয়ে ছাদের এক কোনায় বসবাস করা ভালো।
Better is it to dwell in a corner of the housetop, Than with a quarrelsome woman in a large house.
25 দূরবর্তী দেশ থেকে আসা সুসংবাদ সেই ঠান্ডা জলের মতো, যা পরিশ্রান্ত মানুষকে দেওয়া হয়েছে।
As cold water to the thirsty, So is good news from a far country.
26 দুষ্টদের হাতে যারা নিজেদের সঁপে দেয়, সেই ধার্মিকেরা ঘোলাটে জলের উৎস বা দূষিত কুয়োর মতো।
As a troubled fountain, and as a corrupted spring, So is a righteous man falling before the wicked.
27 অতিরিক্ত মধু খাওয়া ভালো নয়, খুব জটিল সব বিষয়ের খোঁজ করতে যাওয়াও সম্মানজনক নয়।
To eat much honey is not good; So the search of high things is weariness.
28 যার আত্মসংযমের অভাব আছে সে এমন এক নগরের মতো, যেখানকার প্রাচীরগুলি ভেঙে গিয়েছে।
As a city broken through and without a wall, So is he that hath no rule over his spirit.
