হিতোপদেশ 23
1 যখন তুমি কোনও শাসকের সঙ্গে খাবার খেতে বসবে, তখন ভালো করে লক্ষ্য কোরো তোমার সামনে কী রাখা আছে,
When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, Thou considerest diligently that which [is] before thee,
2 ও যদি তোমার ভোজনবিলাসিতার বদভ্যাস থাকে তবে তুমি গলায় ছুরি বেঁধে রেখো।
And thou hast put a knife to thy throat, If thou [art] a man of appetite.
3 তাঁর সুস্বাদু খাদ্যের প্রতি আকাঙ্ক্ষিত হোয়ো না, কারণ সেই খাদ্য বিভ্রান্তিকর।
Have no desire to his dainties, seeing it [is] lying food.
4 ধনসম্পত্তি অর্জনের জন্য নিজেকে অবসন্ন করে তুলো না; নিজের চালাকির উপরে ভরসা কোরো না।
Labour not to make wealth, From thine own understanding cease, Dost thou cause thine eyes to fly upon it? Then it is not.
5 ধনসম্পত্তির দিকে শুধু এক পলক দেখো, আর তা অদৃশ্য হয়ে যাবে, কারণ ঈগল পাখির মতো নিশ্চয় তার ডানা গজাবে ও তা আকাশে উড়ে যাবে।
For wealth maketh to itself wings, As an eagle it flieth to the heavens.
6 কোনও রুষ্টমনা নিমন্ত্রণকর্তার দেওয়া খাদ্য খেয়ো না, তার সুস্বাদু খাদ্যের প্রতি আকাঙ্ক্ষিত হোয়ো না;
Eat not the bread of an evil eye, And have no desire to his dainties,
7 কারণ সে এমন এক ধরনের লোক যে সবসময় অর্থব্যয়ের কথা ভাবে। সে তোমাকে বলবে “ভোজনপান করো,” কিন্তু সে তোমার প্রতি আন্তরিক নয়।
For as he hath thought in his soul, so [is] he, 'Eat and drink,' saith he to thee, And his heart [is] not with thee.
8 তুমি অল্প যেটুকু খেয়েছ তা বমি করে ফেলবে ও তোমার সাধুবাদ অপচয় করে ফেলবে।
Thy morsel thou hast eaten thou dost vomit up, And hast marred thy words that [are] sweet.
9 মূর্খদের কাছে কথা বোলো না, কারণ তারা তোমার বিচক্ষণ কথাবার্তা অবজ্ঞা করবে।
In the ears of a fool speak not, For he treadeth on the wisdom of thy words.
10 সীমানার প্রাচীন পাথরটি স্থানান্তরিত কোরো না বা পিতৃহীনদের জমি বলপূর্বক দখল কোরো না,
Remove not a border of olden times, And into fields of the fatherless enter not,
11 কারণ তাদের রক্ষক বলবান; তাদের হয়ে তিনি তোমার বিরুদ্ধে মামলা লড়বেন।
For their Redeemer [is] strong, He doth plead their cause with thee.
12 শিক্ষার প্রতি আন্তরিক মনোনিবেশ করো ও জ্ঞানের কথায় কর্ণপাত করো।
Bring in to instruction thy heart, And thine ear to sayings of knowledge.
13 শিশুকে শাসন করতে পিছপা হোয়ো না; তুমি যদি তাদের লাঠি দিয়ে মেরে শাস্তি দাও, তবে তারা মারা যাবে না।
Withhold not from a youth chastisement, When thou smitest him with a rod he dieth not.
Thou with a rod smitest him, And his soul from Sheol thou deliverest. (Sheol h7585)
15 হে আমার বাছা, তোমার অন্তর যদি জ্ঞানে পরিপূর্ণ হয়, তবে সত্যিই আমি আন্তরিকভাবে আনন্দিত হব;
My son, if thy heart hath been wise, My heart rejoiceth, even mine,
16 ঠোঁট দিয়ে তুমি যখন যা সঠিক তা বলবে তখন আমার হৃদয় উল্লসিত হবে।
And my reins exult when thy lips speak uprightly.
17 তোমার হৃদয় যেন পাপীদের হিংসা না করে, কিন্তু সবর্দা তুমি সদাপ্রভুকে ভয় করার জন্য তৎপর থেকো।
Let not thy heart be envious at sinners, But — in the fear of Jehovah all the day.
18 নিশ্চয় তোমার জন্য ভবিষ্যতের এক আশা আছে, ও তোমার আশা বিচ্ছিন্ন করা হবে না।
For, is there a posterity? Then thy hope is not cut off.
19 হে আমার বাছা, তুমি শোনো ও জ্ঞানবান হও, ও ন্যায়পথে তোমার অন্তর স্থির রাখো:
Hear thou, my son, and be wise, And make happy in the way thy heart,
20 যারা সুরা পান করে বা গাণ্ডেপিণ্ডে খাওয়াদাওয়া করে তাদের সঙ্গী হোয়ো না,
Be not thou among quaffers of wine, Among gluttonous ones of flesh,
21 কারণ মদ্যপ ও পেটুকেরা দরিদ্র হয়ে যায়, ও তন্দ্রাচ্ছন্নভাব তাদের ছেঁড়া জামাকাপড় পরিয়ে ছাড়ে।
For the quaffer and glutton become poor, And drowsiness clotheth with rags.
22 তোমার সেই বাবার কথা শোনো, যিনি তোমাকে জীবন দিয়েছেন, ও তোমার মায়ের বৃদ্ধাবস্থায় তাঁকে হেয় জ্ঞান কোরো না।
Hearken to thy father, who begat thee, And despise not thy mother when she hath become old.
23 সত্য কিনে নাও ও তা বিক্রি কোরো না— প্রজ্ঞা, শিক্ষা ও দূরদর্শিতাও কিনে নাও।
Truth buy, and sell not, Wisdom, and instruction, and understanding,
24 ধার্মিক সন্তানের বাবা খুব আনন্দ পান; জ্ঞানবান ছেলের জন্মদাতা তাকে নিয়ে আনন্দ করেন।
The father of the righteous rejoiceth greatly, The begetter of the wise rejoiceth in him.
25 তোমার বাবা ও মা আনন্দ করুন; যিনি তোমাকে জন্ম দিয়েছেন তিনি উল্লসিতা হোন!
Rejoice doth thy father and thy mother, Yea, she that bare thee is joyful.
26 হে আমার বাছা, তোমার অন্তর আমাকে দিয়ে দাও ও তোমার চোখদুটি আমার পথে আহ্লাদিত হোক,
Give, my son, thy heart to me, And let thine eyes watch my ways.
27 কারণ ব্যভিচারিণী মহিলা এক গভীর খাত, ও স্বৈরিণী স্ত্রী এক অগভীর কুয়ো।
For a harlot [is] a deep ditch, And a strange woman [is] a strait pit.
28 দস্যুর মতো সে ওৎ পেতে থাকে ও পুরুষদের মধ্যে সে বিশ্বাসঘাতকতা বৃদ্ধি করে।
She also, as catching prey, lieth in wait, And the treacherous among men she increaseth.
29 কে দুর্দশাগ্রস্ত? কে দুঃখিত? কে বিবাদ করে? কে অভিযোগ জানায়? কে অকারণে ক্ষতবিক্ষত হয়? কার চোখ রক্তরাঙা হয়?
Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? Who hath contentions? who hath plaint? Who hath wounds without cause? Who hath redness of eyes?
30 তারাই, যারা সুরাপানে আসক্ত, যারা মিশ্রিত সুরা ভর্তি বাটির দিকে যায়।
Those tarrying by the wine, Those going in to search out mixed wine.
31 তুমি সুরার দিকে তখন একদৃষ্টিতে তাকিয়ে থেকো না যখন তার রং লাল থাকে, যখন তা পানপাত্রের মধ্যে ঝকঝক করে, যখন তা সহজেই গলায় নেমে যায়!
See not wine when it showeth itself red, When it giveth in the cup its colour, It goeth up and down through the upright.
32 শেষে তা সাপের মতো দংশন করে ও বিষধর সাপের মতো বিষ উগরে দেয়।
Its latter end — as a serpent it biteth, And as a basilisk it stingeth.
33 তোমার চোখদুটি অদ্ভুত সব দৃশ্য দেখবে, ও তোমার মন বিভ্রান্তিকর সব বিষয় কল্পনা করবে।
Thine eyes see strange women, And thy heart speaketh perverse things.
34 তুমি এমন একজনের মতো হয়ে যাবে যে উঁচু সমুদ্রের উপরে ঘুমিয়ে আছে, জাহাজের মাস্তুলের চূড়ায় শুয়ে আছে।
And thou hast been as one lying down in the heart of the sea, And as one lying down on the top of a mast.
35 “ওরা আমাকে মেরেছে,” তুমি বলবে, “কিন্তু আমি ব্যথা পাইনি! ওরা আমায় মারধর করেছে, কিন্তু আমি তা অনুভব করিনি! আমি কখন জেগে উঠব যেন আরও একটু পান করতে পারি?”
'They smote me, I have not been sick, They beat me, I have not known. When I awake — I seek it yet again!'
