হিতোপদেশ 17
1 যে ভোজবাড়িতে শত্রুতার পরিবেশ আছে সেখানকার চেয়ে শান্তি ও নিরূপদ্রব পরিবেশে এক মুঠি শুকনো খাবার ও ভালো।
Better is a dry morsell, if peace be with it, then an house full of sacrifices with strife.
2 বিচক্ষণ দাস মর্যাদাহানিকর ছেলের উপরে কর্তৃত্ব করবে ও পরিবারভুক্ত একজনের মতো সেও উত্তরাধিকারের অংশীদার হবে।
A discrete seruant shall haue rule ouer a lewde sonne, and hee shall deuide the heritage among the brethren.
3 রুপোর জন্য গলনপাত্র ও সোনার জন্য হাপর, কিন্তু সদাপ্রভুই অন্তরের পরীক্ষা করেন।
As is the fining pot for siluer, and the fornace for golde, so the Lord trieth the heartes.
4 দুষ্টলোক প্রতারণাপূর্ণ ঠোঁটের কথাই শোনে; মিথ্যাবাদী মানুষ ধ্বংসাত্মক জিভের কথায় মনোযোগ দেয়।
The wicked giueth heed to false lippes, and a lyer hearkeneth to the naughtie tongue.
5 যে দরিদ্রদের উপহাস করে সে তাদের নির্মাতার প্রতিই অসম্মান দেখায়; যে বিপর্যয় দেখে আনন্দ পায় সে অদণ্ডিত থাকবে না।
Hee that mocketh the poore, reprocheth him, that made him: and he that reioyceth at destruction, shall not be vnpunished.
6 নাতিপুতিরা বয়স্ক মানুষদের মুকুট, ও মা-বাবারা তাদের সন্তানদের গৌরব।
Childres children are the crowne of the elders: and the glory of ye children are their fathers.
7 বাক্পটু ঠোঁট যদি মূর্খের পক্ষে অনুপযোগী— তবে একজন শাসকের পক্ষে মিথ্যাবাদী ঠোঁট কতই না বেশি মন্দ!
Hie talke becommeth not a foole, much lesse a lying talke a prince.
8 যারা ঘুস দেয় তাদের দৃষ্টিতে তা এক দামি মণিবিশেষ; তারা মনে করে প্রত্যেকটি বাঁক ধরেই সাফল্য আসবে।
A rewarde is as a stone pleasant in the eyes of them that haue it: it prospereth, whithersoeuer it turneth.
9 যে ভালোবাসা লালনপালন করে সে অপরাধ ঢেকে রাখে, কিন্তু যে বারবার সেকথার পুনরাবৃত্তি করে সে ঘনিষ্ঠ বন্ধুদের বিচ্ছিন্ন করে দেয়।
Hee that couereth a transgression, seeketh loue: but hee that repeateth a matter, separateth the prince.
10 একশো কশাঘাত মূর্খকে যত না প্রভাবিত করে ভর্ৎসনা বিচক্ষণ মানুষকে তার চেয়েও অনেক বেশি প্রভাবিত করে।
A reproofe entereth more into him that hath vnderstanding, then an hundreth stripes into a foole.
11 অনিষ্টকারীরা ঈশ্বরের বিরুদ্ধে বিদ্রোহ লালনপালন করে; তাদের বিরুদ্ধে মৃত্যুদূত পাঠানো হবে।
A sedicious person seeketh onely euill, and a cruel messenger shall be sent against him.
12 মূর্খতার ভারে ন্যুব্জ মূর্খের সাথে দেখা হওয়ার চেয়ে বরং শাবক হারানো মাদি ভালুকের সম্মুখীন হওয়া ভালো।
It is better for a man to meete a beare robbed of her whelpes, then a foole in his follie.
13 যে মঙ্গলের প্রতিদানে অমঙ্গল ফিরিয়ে দেয় অমঙ্গল কখনোই তার বাড়িছাড়া হবে না।
He that rewardeth euil for good, euil shall not depart from his house.
14 বিবাদের সূত্রপাত হল বাঁধে ফাটল ধরার মতো বিষয়; অতএব বিতর্ক দানা বাঁধার আগেই বিষয়টিতে ইতি টানো।
The beginning of strife is as one that openeth the waters: therefore or the contention be medled with, leaue off.
15 দোষীকে বেকসুর খালাস করে দেওয়া ও নির্দোষকে দোষী সাব্যস্ত করা— দুটি বিষয়কেই সদাপ্রভু ঘৃণা করেন।
He that iustifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the iust, euen they both are abomination to the Lord.
16 প্রজ্ঞা কেনার জন্য মূর্খদের হাতে অর্থ থাকবে কেন, যখন তা বোঝার ক্ষমতাই তাদের নেই?
Wherefore is there a price in the hand of the foole to get wisdome, and he hath none heart?
17 বন্ধু সবসময় ভালোবেসে যায়, ও দুর্দশা কালের জন্যই ভাই জন্ম নেয়।
A friende loueth at all times: and a brother is borne for aduersitie.
18 বুদ্ধি-বিবেচনাহীন মানুষ জামিনদার হয়ে হাতে হাত মিলায় ও প্রতিবেশীর হয়ে বন্ধক রাখে।
A man destitute of vnderstanding, toucheth the hande, and becommeth suretie for his neighbour.
19 যে বিবাদ ভালোবাসে সে পাপও ভালোবাসে; যে উঁচু দরজা নির্মাণ করে সে সর্বনাশ ডেকে আনে।
He loueth transgression, that loueth strife: and he that exalteth his gate, seeketh destruction.
20 যার অন্তর দুর্নীতিগ্রস্ত সে উন্নতি লাভ করে না; যার জিভ কলুষিত সে বিপদে পড়ে।
The froward heart findeth no good: and he that hath a naughtie tongue, shall fall into euill.
21 মূর্খকে সন্তানরূপে লাভ করার অর্থ জীবনে বিষাদ নেমে আসা; মূর্খের মা-বাবার মনে আনন্দ থাকে না।
He that begetteth a foole, getteth himselfe sorow, and the father of a foole can haue no ioy.
22 আনন্দিত হৃদয় ভালো ওষুধ, কিন্তু ভগ্নচূর্ণ আত্মা অস্থি শুকনো করে দেয়।
A ioyfull heart causeth good health: but a sorowfull minde dryeth the bones.
23 বিচারের গতিপথ বিকৃত করার জন্য দুষ্টেরা গোপনে ঘুস নেয়।
A wicked man taketh a gift out of the bosome to wrest the wayes of iudgement.
24 বিচক্ষণ মানুষ প্রজ্ঞাকে সামনে রেখে চলে, কিন্তু মূর্খের দৃষ্টি পৃথিবীর প্রান্ত পর্যন্ত ঘুরে বেড়ায়।
Wisdome is in the face of him that hath vnderstanding: but the eyes of a foole are in the corners of the world.
25 মূর্খ ছেলে তার বাবার জীবনে বিষাদ ও যে মা তাকে জন্ম দিয়েছে তার জীবনে তিক্ততা উৎপন্ন করে।
A foolish sonne is a griefe vnto his father, and a heauines to her that bare him.
26 নির্দোষ লোকের জরিমানা করা যদি ভালো কাজ না হয়, তবে সৎ কর্মকর্তাদের কশাঘাত করাও নিশ্চয় ঠিক নয়।
Surely it is not good to condemne the iust, nor that ye princes should smite such for equitie.
27 যার জ্ঞান আছে সে সংযমী হয়ে শব্দ ব্যবহার করে, ও যার বুদ্ধি-বিবেচনা আছে সে মেজাজের রাশ নিয়ন্ত্রণে রাখে।
Hee that hath knowledge, spareth his wordes, and a man of vnderstanding is of an excellent spirit.
28 মূর্খরাও যদি নীরবতা বজায় রাখে তবে তাদের জ্ঞানবান বলে মনে করা হয়, ও যদি তারা তাদের জিভ নিয়ন্ত্রণে রাখে তবে তাদের বিচক্ষণ বলে মনে করা হয়।
Euen a foole (when he holdeth his peace) is counted wise, and hee that stoppeth his lips, prudent.
