নহিমিয়ের বই 4

1 সন্‌বল্লট যখন শুনল যে, আমরা আবার প্রাচীর গাঁথছি, তখন সে ভয়ানক রাগ করল ও ভীষণ বিরক্ত হল। সে ইহুদিদের বিদ্রুপ করল,

But it happened that when Sanballat heard that we were building the wall, he was angry, and took great indignation, and mocked the Jews.

2 এবং তার সঙ্গের লোকদের ও শমরীয় সৈন্যদলের সামনে সে বলল, “এই দুর্বল ইহুদিরা কি করেছে? তারা কি তাদের প্রাচীর পুনর্নির্মাণ করবে? তারা কি যজ্ঞ করবে? একদিনের মধ্যে কি তারা শেষ করবে? ধ্বংসস্তূপ থেকে তারা কি পাথরগুলিকে সজীব করবে, ওগুলি তো পুড়ে গেছে?”

And he spoke before his brothers and the army of Samaria, and said, "What are these feeble Jews doing? Will they restore it for themselves? Will they sacrifice? Will they finish in a day? Will they revive the stones out of the heaps of rubbish, which are burned?"

3 তখন অম্মোনীয় টোবিয় তার পাশে ছিল, সে বলল, “ওরা কি গাঁথছে, তার উপরে যদি একটি শিয়াল ওঠে তবে তাদের ওই পাথরের প্রাচীর ভেঙে পড়বে!”

Now Tobiah the Ammonite was by him, and he said, "What they are building, if a fox climbed up it, he would break down their stone wall."

4 হে আমাদের ঈশ্বর, তুমি শোনো, কেমন করে আমাদের তুচ্ছ করা হচ্ছে। তাদের এই অপমান তুমি তাদেরই মাথার উপরে ফেলো। তুমি এমন করো যেন তারা বন্দি হয়ে লুটের বস্তুর মতো অন্য দেশে থাকে।

"Hear, our God; for we are despised; and turn back their insults on their own head, give them up for a spoil in a land of captivity;

5 তাদের অন্যায় তুমি ক্ষমা কোরো না কিংবা তোমার সামনে থেকে তাদের পাপ তুমি মুছে ফেলো না, কারণ তারা গাঁথকদের সামনেই তোমাকে অসন্তুষ্ট করেছে।

do not cover their iniquity, and do not let their sin be blotted out from before you; for they have insulted the builders."

6 সমস্ত প্রাচীরটি যত উঁচু হবে তার অর্ধেকটা পর্যন্ত আমরা গাঁথলাম, কারণ লোকেরা তাদের সমস্ত মনপ্রাণ দিয়ে কাজ করছিল।

So we built the wall; and all the wall was joined together to half its height: for the people had a mind to work.

7 কিন্তু যখন সন্‌বল্লট, টোবিয়, আরবীয়েরা, অম্মোনীয়েরা ও অস্‌দোদের লোকেরা শুনল যে, জেরুশালেমের প্রাচীর মেরামতের কাজ এগিয়ে গেছে এবং ফাঁকগুলি বন্ধ করা হয়েছে তখন তারা ভীষণ রেগে গেল।

But it happened that when Sanballat, Tobiah, the Arabians, the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites heard that the repairing of the walls of Jerusalem went forward, and that the breaches began to be filled, then they were very angry;

8 তারা সকলে ষড়যন্ত্র করল যে, তারা গিয়ে জেরুশালেমের বিরুদ্ধে যুদ্ধ করবে এবং গোলমাল শুরু করে দেবে।

and they conspired all of them together to come and fight against Jerusalem, and to cause confusion in it.

9 কিন্তু আমরা আমাদের ঈশ্বরের কাছে প্রার্থনা করলাম এবং তাদের বিরুদ্ধে দিনরাত পাহারা দেবার ব্যবস্থা করলাম।

But we made our prayer to our God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them.

10 এর মধ্যে, যিহূদার লোকেরা বলল, “শ্রমিকেরা দুর্বল হয়ে পড়েছে এবং পড়ে থাকা ধ্বংসস্তূপ এত বেশি যে, আমরা আর প্রাচীর গাঁথতে পারব না।”

Judah said, "The strength of the bearers of burdens is fading, and there is much rubbish; so that we are not able to build the wall."

11 এদিকে আমাদের শত্রুরা বলল, “তারা জানবার আগে কিংবা দেখবার আগেই আমরা সেখানে উপস্থিত হব এবং তাদের মেরে ফেলে কাজ বন্ধ করে দেব।”

Our adversaries said, "They shall not know, neither see, until we come into their midst, and kill them, and cause the work to cease."

12 যে ইহুদিরা তাদের কাছাকাছি বাস করত তারা এসে দশবার আমাদের বলতে লাগল, “তোমরা যেদিকেই যাবে, তারা আমাদের আক্রমণ করবে।”

It happened that when the Jews who lived by them came, they said to us ten times from all places, "Wherever you turn, they will attack us."

13 অতএব আমি প্রাচীরের পিছন দিকে নিচু জায়গাগুলি যেখানে ফাঁকগুলির ছিল সেখানে বংশ অনুসারে লোকদের তরোয়াল, বড়শা ও ধনুক হাতে নিযুক্ত করলাম।

Therefore set I in the lowest parts of the space behind the wall, in the open places, I set the people after their families with their swords, their spears, and their bows.

14 সমস্ত পরিস্থিতি দেখার পর আমি উঠে দাঁড়িয়ে প্রধান লোকেদের, উচ্চপদস্থ কর্মচারীদের ও অন্য সকল লোকদের বললাম, “ওদের ভয় কোরো না। মহান ও ভয়ংকর প্রভুকে স্মরণ করো এবং নিজেদের ভাই, নিজেদের ছেলেদের ও নিজেদের মেয়েদের, নিজেদের স্ত্রীদের ও নিজেদের বাড়ির জন্য যুদ্ধ করো।”

I looked, and rose up, and said to the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, "Do not be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your brothers, your sons, and your daughters, your wives, and your houses."

15 আমাদের শত্রুরা যখন শুনল যে, আমরা তাদের ষড়যন্ত্র জানি এবং ঈশ্বর তা বিফল করে দিয়েছেন, তখন আমরা সকলে প্রাচীরের কাছে ফিরে গিয়ে যে যার কাজ করতে লাগলাম।

It happened, when our enemies heard that it was known to us, and God had brought their counsel to nothing, that we returned all of us to the wall, everyone to his work.

16 সেদিন থেকে আমার অর্ধেক লোক কাজ করত আর বাকি অর্ধেক বর্শা, ঢাল, ধনুক, ও বর্ম নিয়ে প্রস্তুত থাকত। যিহূদার যে সমস্ত লোক প্রাচীর গাঁথছিল তাদের পিছনে কর্মকর্তারা থাকত।

It happened from that time forth that half of my servants would do the work and half of them held the spears, and the shields, and the bows, and the body armor; and the rulers stood behind the whole house of Judah

17 যারা মালমশলা বইত তারা এক হাতে কাজ করত আর অন্য হাতে অস্ত্র ধরত।

who were building the wall. And those who carried loads held their load with one hand and with the other held a weapon;

18 গাথকেরা প্রত্যেকে কোমরে তরোয়াল বেঁধে কাজ করত, আর যে তূরী বাজাত সে আমার সঙ্গে থাকত।

and the builders, everyone wore his sword at his side, and so built. He who sounded the trumpet was by me.

19 পরে আমি প্রধান লোকেদের, উচ্চপদস্থ কর্মচারীদের ও অন্য সকল লোককে বললাম, “কাজের এলাকাটি বড়ো এবং তা অনেকখানি জায়গা জুড়ে রয়েছে, আর আমরা প্রাচীর বরাবর একজনের কাছ থেকে অন্যজন আলাদা হয়ে দূরে দূরে আছি।

I said to the nobles, and to the rulers and to the rest of the people, "The work is great and large, and we are separated on the wall, one far from another.

20 তোমরা যে কোনও স্থানে তূরীর শব্দ শুনবে, সেই স্থানে আমাদের কাছে জড়ো হবে। আমাদের ঈশ্বর আমাদের হয়ে যুদ্ধ করবেন!”

Wherever you hear the sound of the trumpet, rally there to us. Our God will fight for us."

21 ভোর থেকে শুরু করে অন্ধকার না হওয়া পর্যন্ত অর্ধেক লোক বর্শা ধরে থাকত আর আমরা এইভাবেই কাজ করতাম।

So we worked in the work: and half of them held the spears from the rising of the morning until the stars appeared.

22 সেই সময় আমি লোকেদের আরও বললাম, “প্রত্যেকে তার চাকরকে নিয়ে রাত্রে যেন জেরুশালেমে থাকে, যেন রাতে পাহারা দিতে পারে এবং দিনের বেলা কাজ করতে পারে।”

Likewise at the same time said I to the people, "Let everyone with his servant lodge within Jerusalem, that in the night they may be a guard to us, and may labor in the day."

23 আমি কিংবা আমার ভাইরা বা আমার চাকরেরা বা আমার দেহরক্ষীরা কেউই আমরা কাপড় খুলতাম না এমনকি, জলের কাছে গেলেও আমরা প্রত্যেকে নিজের অস্ত্রশস্ত্র সঙ্গে নিতাম।

So neither I, nor my brothers, nor my servants, nor the men of the guard who followed me, none of us took off our clothes. Everyone took his weapon to the water.
