মথি 23
1 তারপর যীশু সকল লোকদের ও তাঁর শিষ্যদের বললেন,
Then Jesus spoke to the multitude, and to his disciples,
2 “শাস্ত্রবিদ ও ফরিশীরা মোশির আসনে বসে।
Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in the seat of Moses:
3 সেই কারণে, তোমরা অবশ্যই তাদের কথা শুনবে ও তারা যা বলে তা পালন করবে। কিন্তু তারা যে কাজ করে, তোমরা সেই কাজ করবে না, কারণ তারা যা প্রচার করে, তা নিজেরা অনুশীলন করে না।
All therefore whatever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye according to their works: for they say, and do not.
4 তারা দুর্বহ বোঝা বেঁধে সেগুলি মানুষদের কাঁধে চাপায়, কিন্তু তারা একটি আঙুল দিয়েও তা সরাতে ইচ্ছুক হয় না।
For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.
5 “তারা যা কিছুই করে, তা লোক-দেখানো মাত্র। তারা তাদের কবচ প্রশস্ত ও আলখাল্লার ঝালর লম্বা করে।
But all their works they do to be seen by men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments,
6 তারা ভোজসভায় সব থেকে সম্মানজনক আসন ও সমাজভবনে সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ আসনগুলি পেতে ভালোবাসে।
And love the uppermost places at feasts, and the best seats in the synagogues,
7 তারা হাটেবাজারে সম্ভাষিত হতে ভালোবাসে ও চায় যেন লোকেরা তাদের ‘রব্বি’ বলে ডাকে।
And greetings in the markets, and to be called by men, Rabbi, Rabbi.
8 “কিন্তু তোমরা ‘রব্বি’ বলে সম্ভাষিত হোয়ো না, কারণ তোমাদের গুরুমহাশয় কেবলমাত্র একজন ও তোমরা পরস্পর ভাই ভাই।
But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren.
9 আবার পৃথিবীতে কাউকে ‘পিতা’ বলে সম্বোধন কোরো না, কারণ তোমাদের পিতা একজনই, তিনি স্বর্গে থাকেন।
And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, who is in heaven.
10 আবার কেউ তোমাদের ‘আচার্য’ বলে যেন না ডাকে, কারণ তোমাদের আচার্য একজনই তিনি খ্রীষ্ট।
Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ.
11 তোমাদের মধ্যে যে শ্রেষ্ঠ, সে তোমাদের পরিচারক হবে।
But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.
12 কারণ যে কেউ নিজেকে উন্নত করে, তাকে নত করা হবে, আর যে কেউ নিজেকে নত করে তাকে উন্নত করা হবে।
And whoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.
13 “শাস্ত্রবিদ ও ফরিশীরা, ভণ্ডের দল, ধিক্ তোমাদের! তোমরা লোকদের মুখের সামনে স্বর্গরাজ্য রুদ্ধ করে থাকো।
But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither allow ye them that are entering to go in.
14 তোমরা নিজেরা তার মধ্যে তো প্রবেশ করো না অথচ যারা প্রবেশ করতে চেষ্টা করে তাদেরও প্রবেশ করতে দাও না। শাস্ত্রবিদ ও ফরিশীরা, ভণ্ডের দল, ধিক্ তোমাদের! তোমরা বিধবাদের বাড়িশুদ্ধ গ্রাস করো, আর লোক-দেখানো লম্বা লম্বা প্রার্থনা করো। সেই কারণে তোমাদের শাস্তি কঠোরতম হবে।
Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows’ houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.
15 “শাস্ত্রবিদ ও ফরিশীরা, ভণ্ডের দল, ধিক্ তোমাদের! তোমরা একজনকে ইহুদি ধর্মে ধর্মান্তরিত করার জন্য স্থলে ও সমুদ্রে পরিভ্রমণ করে থাকো। আর সে যখন রাজি হয়, তখন তোমরা যেমন নারকীয়, তাকেও তেমনই তোমাদের দ্বিগুণ নরকের উপযুক্ত করে তোলো। (Geenna g1067)
Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye travel sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves. (Geenna g1067)
16 “অন্ধ পথপ্রদর্শকেরা, ধিক্ তোমাদের! তোমরা বলো, ‘কেউ যদি মন্দিরের নামে শপথ করে সেটা বড়ো কিছুই নয়, কিন্তু কেউ যদি মন্দিরের সোনার শপথ করে তাহলে সে তার শপথে আবদ্ধ হল।’
Woe to you, ye blind guides, who say, Whoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor!
17 মূর্খ অন্ধের দল! কোনটা মহত্তর: সেই সোনা, না সেই মন্দির, যা সোনাকে পবিত্র করে?
Ye fools and blind: for which is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold?
18 তোমরা আরও বলো, ‘কেউ যদি যজ্ঞবেদির শপথ করে সেটা কিছুই নয়; কিন্তু কেউ যদি তার উপরে স্থিত নৈবেদ্যের শপথ করে তাহলে সে তার শপথে আবদ্ধ হল।’
And, Whoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is bound.
19 অন্ধ মানুষ তোমরা! কোনটা মহত্তর: সেই নৈবেদ্য, না যজ্ঞবেদি, যা নৈবেদ্যকে পবিত্র করে?
Ye fools and blind: for which is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift?
20 সেই কারণে, যে যজ্ঞবেদির শপথ করে সে বেদির ও তার উপরে স্থিত সবকিছুরই শপথ করে।
Whoever therefore shall swear by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things on it.
21 আর যে মন্দিরের শপথ করে সে মন্দিরের ও যিনি তার মধ্যে অধিষ্ঠান করেন, তাঁরও শপথ করে।
And whoever shall swear by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth in it.
22 আর যে স্বর্গের শপথ করে, সে ঈশ্বরের সিংহাসন ও যিনি তার উপরে উপবেশন করেন তাঁরও শপথ করে।
And he that shall swear by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth upon it.
23 “শাস্ত্রবিদ ও ফরিশীরা, ভণ্ডের দল, ধিক্ তোমাদের! তোমরা তোমাদের মশলাপাতি—পুদিনা, মৌরি ও জিরার দশমাংশ দিয়ে থাকো কিন্তু বিধানের আরও গুরুত্বপূর্ণ বিষয়, যেমন ন্যায়বিচার, করুণা, বিশ্বস্ততা—এগুলি উপেক্ষা করে থাকো। ভালো হত, তোমরা আগের বিষয়গুলি উপেক্ষা না করে যদি এগুলিও পালন করতে।
Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, justice, mercy, and faith: these ye ought to have done, and not to leave the others undone.
24 অন্ধ পথপ্রদর্শক তোমরা! তোমরা মশা ছাঁকো, কিন্তু উট গিলে ফেলো।
Ye blind guides, who strain out a gnat, and swallow a camel.
25 “শাস্ত্রবিদ ও ফরিশীরা, ভণ্ডের দল, ধিক্ তোমাদের! তোমরা থালাবাটির বাইরেটা পরিষ্কার করে থাকো কিন্তু ভিতরের দিকটা লোভ-লালসা ও আত্ম-অসংযমে পূর্ণ।
Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.
26 অন্ধ ফরিশী! প্রথমে থালাবাটির ভিতরটা পরিষ্কার করো তারপরে বাইরের দিকটিও পরিষ্কার হবে।
Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.
27 “শাস্ত্রবিদ ও ফরিশীরা, ভণ্ডের দল, ধিক্ তোমাদের! তোমরা চুনকাম করা কবরের মতো! সেগুলি বাইরে থেকে দেখতে তো সুন্দর কিন্তু ভিতরে মরা মানুষের হাড় ও সব ধরনের অশুচি বিষয়ে পরিপূর্ণ।
Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like whitewashed sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness.
28 একইভাবে, লোকেদের কাছে বাহ্যিকভাবে তোমরা নিজেদের ধার্মিক দেখাও কিন্তু অন্তরে তোমরা ভণ্ডামি ও দুষ্টতায় পূর্ণ।
Thus ye also outwardly appear righteous to men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.
29 “শাস্ত্রবিদ ও ফরিশীরা, ভণ্ডের দল তোমরা! তোমরা ভাববাদীদের সমাধি নির্মাণ করে থাকো এবং ধার্মিকদের কবর সুশোভিত করো।
Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous,
30 আর তোমরা বলো, ‘আমরা যদি পূর্বপুরুষদের সময়ে থাকতাম তাহলে ভাববাদীদের রক্তপাত করায় তাদের সঙ্গ দিতাম না।’
And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.
31 এভাবে তোমরা নিজেরাই নিজেদের বিষয়ে সাক্ষ্য দাও যে যারা ভাববাদীদের হত্যা করেছিল তোমরা তাদেরই বংশধর।
Therefore ye are witnesses against yourselves, that ye are the children of them who killed the prophets.
32 তাহলে, তোমাদের পূর্বপুরুষেরা যে পাপ শুরু করেছিল তোমরা তারই মাত্রা পূর্ণ করো!
Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers.
Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell? (Geenna g1067)
34 সেই কারণে আমি তোমাদের কাছে ভাববাদী, বিজ্ঞ মানুষ ও শিক্ষাগুরুদের পাঠিয়ে চলেছি। তাদের মধ্যে কয়েকজনকে তোমরা হত্যা করবে, কয়েকজনকে ক্রুশার্পিত করবে। অপরদের তোমরা সমাজভবনে নিয়ে গিয়ে চাবুক দিয়ে মারবে ও এক নগর থেকে অন্য নগরে তাদের তাড়া করবে।
Therefore, behold, I send to you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them ye shall scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city:
35 এভাবে পৃথিবীতে যত ধার্মিক মানুষের রক্তপাত হয়ে আসছে, সেই ধার্মিক হেবলের রক্তপাত থেকে শুরু করে, বরখিয়ের পুত্র সখরিয়ের রক্তপাত পর্যন্ত, যাকে তোমরা মন্দির ও যজ্ঞবেদির মাঝখানে হত্যা করেছিলে, এদের সকলের রক্তপাতের ফল তোমাদের উপরেই বর্তাবে।
That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zachariah son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar.
36 আমি তোমাদের সত্যিই বলছি, এসবই এই প্রজন্মের লোকেদের উপরে এসে পড়বে।
Verily I say to you, All these things shall come upon this generation.
37 “হায়! জেরুশালেম, জেরুশালেম, তুমি ভাববাদীদের হত্যা করো ও তোমার কাছে যাদের পাঠানো হয়, তাদের পাথরের আঘাত করে থাকো। কতবার আমি তোমার সন্তানদের একত্র করতে চেয়েছি, যেমন মুরগি তার শাবকদের নিজের ডানার তলায় একত্র করে, কিন্তু তোমরা ইচ্ছুক হওনি।
O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them who are sent to thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!
38 দেখো, তোমাদের গৃহ তোমাদের জন্য পরিত্যক্ত হয়ে পড়ে রইল।
Behold, your house is left to you desolate.
39 কারণ আমি তোমাদের বলছি, যতক্ষণ না তোমরা বলবে, ‘ধন্য তিনি, যিনি প্রভুর নামে আসছেন’ ততক্ষণ পর্যন্ত তোমরা আর আমাকে দেখতে পাবে না।”
For I say to you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.
