1 যেসব ইস্রায়েলী কনানে কোনও যুদ্ধের অভিজ্ঞতা লাভ করেনি, তাদের পরীক্ষা করার জন্য সদাপ্রভু এসব জাতিকে অবশিষ্ট রেখেছিলেন:

These are the nations that the LORD left to test all the Israelites who had not known any of the wars in Canaan,

2 (ইস্রায়েলীদের সেই বংশধরদের যুদ্ধবিগ্রহ শিক্ষা দেওয়ার জন্যই শুধুমাত্র তিনি এরকম করলেন, ইতিপূর্বে যাদের যুদ্ধের কোনও অভিজ্ঞতা ছিল না)

if only to teach warfare to the subsequent generations of Israel, especially to those who had not known it formerly:

3 ফিলিস্তিনীদের পাঁচজন শাসনকর্তা, বায়াল-হর্মোণ পর্বত থেকে লেবো-হমাৎ পর্যন্ত বিস্তৃত লেবাননের পার্বত্য অঞ্চলে বসবাসকারী সমস্ত কনানীয়, সীদোনীয় এবং হিব্বীয় জাতি।

the five rulers of the Philistines, all the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hivites who lived in the mountains of Lebanon from Mount Baal-hermon to Lebo-hamath.

4 মোশির মাধ্যমে ইস্রায়েলীদের পূর্বপুরুষদের সদাপ্রভু যে আদেশগুলি দিয়েছিলেন, সেগুলি তারা পালন করে কি না, তা জানার জন্যই এই জাতিদের অবশিষ্ট রাখা হল।

These nations were left to test the Israelites, to find out whether they would keep the commandments of the LORD, which He had given their fathers through Moses.

5 ইস্রায়েলীরা কনানীয়, হিত্তীয়, ইমোরীয়, পরিষীয়, হিব্বীয় এবং যিবূষীয়দের মধ্যে বসবাস করল।

Thus the Israelites continued to live among the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites.

6 ইস্রায়েলীরা তাদের মেয়েদের বিয়ে করে আনত ও নিজেদের মেয়েদের সঙ্গে তাদের ছেলেদের বিয়ে দিত, এবং তাদের দেবতাদের সেবা করত।

And they took the daughters of these people in marriage, gave their own daughters to their sons, and served their gods.

7 সদাপ্রভুর দৃষ্টিতে যা মন্দ ইস্রায়েলীরা তাই করল; তারা তাদের ঈশ্বর সদাপ্রভুকে ভুলে গিয়ে বায়াল-দেবতাদের ও আশেরা-দেবীদের সেবা করল।

So the Israelites did evil in the sight of the LORD; they forgot the LORD their God and served the Baals and the Asherahs.

8 সদাপ্রভুর ক্রোধ ইস্রায়েলীদের বিরুদ্ধে প্রজ্বলিত হল, আর তিনি তাদের অরাম-নহরয়িমের রাজা সেই কূশন-রিশিয়াথয়িমের হাতে বিক্রি করে দিলেন, ইস্রায়েলীরা আট বছর যাঁর শাসনাধীন হয়ে থাকল।

Then the anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and He sold them into the hand of Cushan-rishathaim king of Aram-naharaim, and the Israelites served him eight years.

9 কিন্তু তারা যখন সদাপ্রভুর কাছে কেঁদে উঠল, তিনি তাদের জন্য এক রক্ষাকর্তাকে—কালেবের ছোটো ভাই কনসের ছেলে অৎনীয়েলকে—উত্থাপিত করলেন, যিনি তাদের রক্ষা করলেন।

But when the Israelites cried out to the LORD, He raised up Othniel son of Caleb’s younger brother Kenaz as a deliverer to save them.

10 সদাপ্রভুর আত্মা অৎনীয়েলের উপর নেমে এলেন, আর তিনি ইস্রায়েলীদের বিচারক হলেন এবং যুদ্ধযাত্রা করলেন। সদাপ্রভু অরামের রাজা কূশন-রিশিয়াথয়িমকে সেই অৎনীয়েলের হাতে সমর্পণ করলেন, যিনি তাঁকে পরাজিত করলেন।

The Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he became Israel’s judge and went out to war. And the LORD delivered Cushan-rishathaim king of Aram into the hand of Othniel, who prevailed against him.

11 অতএব কনসের ছেলে অৎনীয়েলের মৃত্যু না হওয়া পর্যন্ত চল্লিশ বছরের জন্য দেশে শান্তি বজায় থাকল।

So the land had rest for forty years, until Othniel son of Kenaz died.

12 আবার ইস্রায়েলীরা সদাপ্রভুর দৃষ্টিতে যা মন্দ তাই করল, এবং যেহেতু তারা এরকম মন্দ কাজ করল, তাই সদাপ্রভু মোয়াবের রাজা ইগ্লোনকে ইস্রায়েলের উপর শক্তিপ্রদর্শন করতে দিলেন।

Once again the Israelites did evil in the sight of the LORD. So He gave Eglon king of Moab power over Israel, because they had done evil in the sight of the LORD.

13 অম্মোনীয় ও অমালেকীয়দের সঙ্গে নিয়ে এসে ইগ্লোন ইস্রায়েলকে আক্রমণ করলেন, এবং খর্জুরপুর অধিকার করে নিলেন।

After enlisting the Ammonites and Amalekites to join forces with him, Eglon attacked and defeated Israel, taking possession of the City of Palms.

14 ইস্রায়েলীরা আঠারো বছর যাবৎ মোয়াবের রাজা ইগ্লোনের শাসনাধীন হয়ে থাকল।

The Israelites served Eglon king of Moab eighteen years.

15 ইস্রায়েলীরা আবার সদাপ্রভুর কাছে কেঁদে উঠল, এবং তিনি তাদের এক রক্ষাকর্তা দিলেন—যিনি হলেন বিন্যামীনীয় গেরার ছেলে ন্যাটা এহূদ। ইস্রায়েলীরা তাঁকে রাজস্ব-অর্থ সমেত মোয়াবরাজ ইগ্লোনের কাছে পাঠাল।

And again they cried out to the LORD, and He raised up Ehud son of Gera, a left-handed Benjamite, as their deliverer. So they sent him with tribute to Eglon king of Moab.

16 এহূদ প্রায় 45 সেন্টিমিটার লম্বা এবং উভয় দিকে ধারবিশিষ্ট একটি ছোরা তৈরি করলেন, ও সেটি তিনি তাঁর পোশাকের নিচে তাঁর ডান ঊরুতে বেঁধে রাখলেন।

Now Ehud had made for himself a double-edged sword a cubit long. He strapped it to his right thigh under his cloak

17 তিনি মোয়াবের রাজা সেই ইগ্লোনের কাছে সেই রাজস্ব-অর্থ পেশ করলেন, যিনি অত্যন্ত স্থূলকায় এক ব্যক্তি ছিলেন।

and brought the tribute to Eglon king of Moab, who was an obese man.

18 সেই রাজস্ব-অর্থ পেশ করার পর এহূদ তাদের বিদায় করে দিলেন, যারা তা বহন করে এনেছিল।

After Ehud had finished presenting the tribute, he ushered out those who had carried it.

19 কিন্তু গিল্‌গলের নিকটবর্তী সেই পাথর-প্রতিমাগুলির কাছে পৌঁছানোর পর আবার তিনি ইগ্লোনের কাছে ফিরে এসে বললেন, “হে মহারাজ, আপনার জন্য আমার কাছে এক গোপন সংবাদ আছে।” রাজামশাই তাঁর সেবকদের বললেন, “আমাদের একা ছেড়ে দাও!” আর তারা সবাই বাইরে চলে গেল।

But upon reaching the idols near Gilgal, he himself turned back and said, “I have a secret message for you, O king.” “Silence,” said the king, and all his attendants left him.

20 রাজামশাই যখন তাঁর প্রাসাদের উপরতলার ঘরে একা বসেছিলেন, তখন এহূদ তাঁর কাছে এগিয়ে গিয়ে বললেন, “আপনার জন্য আমার কাছে ঈশ্বরের এক বাণী আছে।” রাজামশাই যেই না তাঁর আসন ছেড়ে উঠে দাঁড়ালেন,

Then Ehud approached him while he was sitting alone in the coolness of his upper room. “I have a word from God for you,” Ehud said, and the king rose from his seat.

21 এহূদ তাঁর বাঁ হাত বাড়িয়ে ডান ঊরু থেকে সেই ছোরাটি টেনে বের করে সোজা রাজামশাই-এর পেটে ঢুকিয়ে দিলেন।

And Ehud reached with his left hand, pulled the sword from his right thigh, and plunged it into Eglon’s belly.

22 এমনকি ছোরার সঙ্গে বাঁটটিও ভিতরে ঢুকে গেল, এবং তাঁর নাড়িভুঁড়ি বাইরে বেরিয়ে এল। এহূদ ছোরাটি টেনে বের করলেন না, এবং সেটি চর্বিতে আটকে থাকল।

Even the handle sank in after the blade, and Eglon’s fat closed in over it, so that Ehud did not withdraw the sword from his belly. And Eglon’s bowels emptied.

23 পরে এহূদ বাইরে বারান্দায় বেরিয়ে এলেন; তিনি উপরতলার ঘরের দরজা বাইরে থেকে বন্ধ করে তাতে তালা লাগিয়ে দিলেন।

Then Ehud went out through the porch, closing and locking the doors of the upper room behind him.

24 তিনি চলে যাওয়ার পর দাসেরা এসে দেখল যে উপরতলার ঘরের দরজা তালাবন্ধ। তারা বলল, “রাজামশাই নিশ্চয় প্রাসাদের শৌচাগারে প্রকৃতির ডাকে সাড়া দিতে গিয়েছেন।”

After Ehud was gone, Eglon’s servants came in and found the doors of the upper room locked. “He must be relieving himself in the cool room,” they said.

25 তারা বিব্রত না হওয়া পর্যন্ত অপেক্ষা করে গেল, কিন্তু রাজামশাই দরজা খুলছেন না দেখে তারা একটি চাবি নিয়ে দরজাটি খুলে ফেলল। সেখানে তারা দেখল যে তাদের মনিব মৃত অবস্থায় মেঝেতে পড়ে আছেন।

So they waited until they became worried and saw that he had still not opened the doors of the upper room. Then they took the key and opened the doors—and there was their lord lying dead on the floor.

26 তারা যখন অপেক্ষা করছিল, তখন এহূদ পালিয়ে গেলেন। তিনি পাথর-প্রতিমাগুলি পার করে গেলেন ও পালিয়ে সিয়ীরাতে গিয়ে পৌঁছালেন।

Ehud, however, had escaped while the servants waited. He passed by the idols and escaped to Seirah.

27 সেখানে পৌঁছে তিনি ইফ্রয়িমের পার্বত্য অঞ্চলে শিঙা বাজালেন, এবং ইস্রায়েলীরা তাঁর সঙ্গে পাহাড় থেকে নেমে গেল, ও এহূদ তাদের নেতৃত্ব দিলেন।

On arriving in Seirah, he blew the ram’s horn throughout the hill country of Ephraim. The Israelites came down with him from the hills, and he became their leader.

28 “আমার অনুগামী হও,” তিনি আদেশ দিলেন, “কারণ সদাপ্রভু তোমাদের শত্রু মোয়াবকে তোমাদের হাতে সমর্পণ করে দিয়েছেন।” অতএব তারা এহূদের অনুগামী হল এবং জর্ডনের হাঁটুজলবিশিষ্ট সেই স্থানগুলি অধিকার করে নিল, যেগুলি মোয়াবের দিকে উঠে যায়; তারা কাউকেই ওপারে যেতে দিল না।

“Follow me,” he told them, “for the LORD has delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand.” So they followed him down and seized the fords of the Jordan leading to Moab, and did not allow anyone to cross over.

29 সেই সময় তারা প্রায় 10,000 মোয়াবীয়কে আঘাত করল, যারা সবাই ছিল সবল ও শক্তিশালী; একজনও পালাতে পারল না।

At that time they struck down about ten thousand Moabites, all robust and valiant men. Not one of them escaped.

30 সেদিন মোয়াবকে ইস্রায়েলের শাসনাধীন করা হল, এবং আশি বছরের জন্য দেশে শান্তি বজায় থাকল।

So Moab was subdued under the hand of Israel that day, and the land had rest for eighty years.

31 এহূদের পর এলেন অনাতের ছেলে শম্‌গর, যিনি বলদের অঙ্কুশ দিয়ে 600 ফিলিস্তিনীকে আঘাত করলেন। তিনিও ইস্রায়েলকে রক্ষা করলেন।

After Ehud came Shamgar son of Anath. And he too saved Israel, striking down six hundred Philistines with an oxgoad.
