1 পরে দান থেকে বের-শেবা পর্যন্ত বিস্তৃত এলাকা থেকে এবং গিলিয়দ দেশ থেকে এসে সমগ্র ইস্রায়েল একজন মানুষের মতো ঐক্যবদ্ধ হয়ে মিস্‌পাতে সদাপ্রভুর সামনে সমবেত হল।

Then went out all the children of Israel, and the congregation was assembled together as one man, from Dan even to Beer-sheba', with the land of Gil'ad, unto the Lord in Mizpah.

2 ইস্রায়েলের বিভিন্ন গোষ্ঠীর সব লোকজনের নেতারা ঈশ্বরের প্রজাদের জনসমাবেশে 4,00,000 তরোয়ালধারী লোকের মধ্যে তাঁদের স্থান গ্রহণ করলেন।

and there presented themselves the chiefs of all the people, of all the tribes of Israel, in the assembly of the people of God, four hundred thousand men on foot that drew the sword.

3 (বিন্যামীন গোষ্ঠীভুক্ত লোকজন শুনেছিল যে ইস্রায়েলীরা মিস্‌পাতে গিয়েছে) পরে ইস্রায়েলীরা বলল, “আমাদের বলো কীভাবে এই ভয়াবহ ঘটনাটি ঘটল।”

(And the children of Benjamin heard that the children of Israel were gone up to Mizpah.) And the children of Israel said, Speak, how did this wickedness take place?

4 অতএব সেই নিহত মহিলাটির স্বামী—সেই লেবীয় লোকটি বলল, “আমি ও আমার উপপত্নী রাত কাটানোর জন্য বিন্যামীনের অন্তর্গত গিবিয়াতে গিয়েছিলাম।

And the Levite, the husband of the woman that was murdered, answered and said, I came to Gib'ah that belongeth to Benjamin, I and my concubine, to stay one night,

5 রাতের বেলায় গিবিয়ার লোকজন আমাকে ধরার জন্য এসেছিল এবং আমাকে হত্যা করার মতলবে, সেই বাড়িটি ঘিরে ধরেছিল। তারা আমার উপপত্নীকে ধর্ষণ করল, ও সে মরে গেল।

When the men of Gib'ah rose against me, and beset the house round about against me by night; me they intended to slay; and my concubine they humbled, so that she died.

And I took hold of my concubine and cut her in pieces, and sent her about throughout all the fields of the inheritance of Israel; for they had committed incest and scandal in Israel.

Behold, ye are all here children of Israel: furnish for yourselves here advice and counsel.

8 সব লোকজন উঠে দাঁড়িয়ে একযোগে বলে উঠল, “আমরা কেউ ঘরে যাব না। না, আমাদের মধ্যে একজনও তার বাড়িতে ফিরে যাবে না।

And all the people then arose as one man, saying, We will not go any of us to his tent, neither will we turn any of us into his house.

9 কিন্তু এখন গিবিয়ার প্রতি আমরা যা করব তা হল এই: গুটিকাপাতের মাধ্যমে ক্রম স্থির করে আমরা গিবিয়ার বিরুদ্ধে আক্রমণ চালাব।

And now this shall be the thing which we will do to Gib'ah: We will go up against it by lot;

And we will take ten men out of every hundred throughout all the tribes of Israel, and a hundred out of every thousand, and a thousand out of every ten thousand, to procure provisions for the people; that they may do, when they come to Gib'ah of Benjamin, in accordance with all the scandalous deed that they have wrought in Israel.

11 অতএব ইস্রায়েলীরা সবাই একত্রিত হয়ে সেই নগরটির বিরুদ্ধে একজন মানুষের মতো সংঘবদ্ধ হল।

So all the men of Israel were gathered against the city, associated together as one man.

12 ইস্রায়েলের বিভিন্ন গোষ্ঠী বিন্যামীন গোষ্ঠীভুক্ত এলাকার সর্বত্র লোক মারফত বলে পাঠাল, “তোমাদের মধ্যে এসব কী ভয়াবহ অপকর্ম হয়েছে?

And the tribes of Israel sent men through all the divisions of Benjamin, saying, What wickedness is this that hath been done among you?

13 এখন গিবিয়ার সেইসব দুর্জন লোককে তোমরা আমাদের হাতে তুলে দাও যেন আমরা তাদের হত্যা করে ইস্রায়েল থেকে দুষ্টাচার লোপ করতে পারি।” কিন্তু বিন্যামীন গোষ্ঠীভুক্ত লোকেরা তাদের স্বজাতীয় ইস্রায়েলীদের কথা শুনতে চাইল না।

Now therefore deliver up the men, those worthless people, who are in Gib'ah, that we may put them to death, and remove evil from Israel. But the children of Benjamin would not hearken to the voice of their brethren the children of Israel.

14 তাদের নগরগুলি থেকে বেরিয়ে এসে তারা ইস্রায়েলীদের সঙ্গে যুদ্ধ করার জন্য গিবিয়ায় সমবেত হল।

And the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together out of the cities unto Gib'ah, to go out to battle with the children of Israel.

15 অবিলম্বে বিন্যামীন গোষ্ঠীভুক্ত লোকেরা তাদের নগরগুলি থেকে 26,000 তরোয়ালধারী লোক সংগ্রহ করল। এর পাশাপাশি গিবিয়াতে বসবাসকারী লোকদের মধ্যে থেকেও 700 জন দক্ষ যুবক সংগ্রহ করা হল।

And at that time there were numbered of the children of Benjamin out of the cities twenty and six thousand men that drew the sword, beside the inhabitants of Gib'ah, who were numbered seven hundred chosen men.

16 এইসব সৈনিকের মধ্যে বাছাই করা 700 জন সৈনিক ছিল ন্যাটা, যাদের প্রত্যেকেই চুলের মতো সূক্ষ্ম নিশানায় গুলতি দিয়ে পাথর ছুঁড়তে পারত ও লক্ষ্যভ্রষ্ট হত না।

Among all this people there were seven hundred chosen men lame in the right hand: every one of these could sling a stone at a hair, and would not miss.

17 বিন্যামীনকে বাদ দিয়ে ইস্রায়েল তরোয়ালধারী এমন 4,00,000 লোক জোগাড় করল, যারা সবাই যুদ্ধের জন্য যোগ্যতাসম্পন্ন ছিল।

And the men of Israel, beside Benjamin, were numbered four hundred thousand men that drew the sword: all these were men of war.

18 ইস্রায়েলীরা বেথেলে গিয়ে ঈশ্বরের কাছে জানতে চাইল। তারা বলল, “বিন্যামীন গোষ্ঠীভুক্ত লোকদের বিরুদ্ধে যুদ্ধ করার জন্য আমাদের মধ্যে থেকে কারা আগে যাবে?” সদাপ্রভু উত্তর দিলেন, “যিহূদা গোষ্ঠী আগে যাবে।”

And they arose, and went up to Beth-el, and asked counsel of God; and the children of Israel said, Who of us shall go up at first to the battle with the children of Benjamin? And the Lord said, Judah, at first.

19 পরদিন সকালে ইস্রায়েলীরা উঠে গিবিয়ার কাছে শিবির স্থাপন করল।

And the children of Israel rose up in the morning, and encamped against Gib'ah.

20 ইস্রায়েলীরা বিন্যামীন গোষ্ঠীভুক্ত লোকদের সঙ্গে যুদ্ধ করার জন্য বাইরে গেল এবং গিবিয়ায় তাদের বিরুদ্ধে যুদ্ধের অবস্থান নিল।

And the men of Israel went out to battle with Benjamin; and the men of Israel put themselves in battle-array against them by Gib'ah.

21 বিন্যামীন গোষ্ঠীভুক্ত লোকেরা গিবিয়া থেকে বেরিয়ে এসে সেদিন যুদ্ধক্ষেত্রে 22,000 ইস্রায়েলীকে হত্যা করল।

And the Children of Benjamin came forth out of Gib'ah, and struck down to the ground of the Israelites on that day twenty and two thousand men.

22 কিন্তু ইস্রায়েলীরা পরস্পরকে উৎসাহিত করল এবং প্রথম দিন যেখানে তারা নিজেদের মোতায়েন করেছিল, সেখানেই আবার তাদের অবস্থান গ্রহণ করল।

And the people the men of Israel took courage, and set themselves again in battle-array in the place where they had arrayed themselves on the first day.

23 ইস্রায়েলীরা গিয়ে সেদিন সন্ধ্যা পর্যন্ত সদাপ্রভুর কাছে কান্নাকাটি করল, এবং তাঁর কাছে জানতে চাইল। তারা বলল, “আমরা কি আবার আমাদের স্বজাতীয় বিন্যামীন গোষ্ঠীভুক্ত লোকদের বিরুদ্ধে যুদ্ধ করতে যাব?” সদাপ্রভু উত্তর দিলেন, “তাদের বিরুদ্ধে চলে যাও।”

And the children of Israel went up and wept before the Lord until the evening, and asked counsel of the Lord, saying, Shall I again approach to battle with the children of Benjamin my brother? And the Lord said, Go up against him.

24 পরে ইস্রায়েলীরা দ্বিতীয় দিনে বিন্যামীনের দিকে এগিয়ে গেল।

And the children of Israel came near against the children of Benjamin on the second day.

25 এবার, বিন্যামীন গোষ্ঠীভুক্ত লোকেরা ইস্রায়েলীদের বিরুদ্ধাচরণ করার জন্য গিবিয়া থেকে বেরিয়ে এসে এমন আরও 18,000 ইস্রায়েলীকে হত্যা করল, যারা সবাই ছিল তরোয়ালধারী সৈনিক।

And Benjamin went forth against them out of Gib'ah on the second day, and struck down to the ground of the children of Israel again eighteen thousand men: all these were men that drew the sword.

26 পরে ইস্রায়েলীরা সবাই—সমগ্র সৈন্যবাহিনী বেথেলে গেল, এবং সেখানে বসে তারা সদাপ্রভুর সামনে কান্নাকাটি করতে লাগল। সেদিন সন্ধ্যা পর্যন্ত তারা উপবাস করল এবং সদাপ্রভুর কাছে হোমবলি ও মঙ্গলার্থক-নৈবেদ্য উৎসর্গ করল।

Now all the children of Israel, and all the people, went up, and came unto Beth-el, and wept, and sat there before the Lord, and fasted on that day until the evening, and offered burnt-offerings and peace-offerings before the Lord.

27 আর ইস্রায়েলীরা সদাপ্রভুর কাছে জানতে চাইল। (সেই সময় ঈশ্বরের নিয়ম-সিন্দুকটি সেখানে ছিল,

And the children of Israel inquired of the Lord, (for there was the ark of the covenant of God in those days,

28 এবং হারোণের নাতি, তথা ইলিয়াসরের ছেলে পীনহস সেটির সামনে থেকে পরিচর্যা করতেন) তারা জিজ্ঞাসা করল, “আমরা কি আবার আমাদের স্বজাতীয় বিন্যামীন গোষ্ঠীভুক্ত লোকদের বিরুদ্ধে যুদ্ধ করতে যাব, কি যাব না?” সদাপ্রভু উত্তর দিলেন, “যাও, কারণ আগামীকাল আমি তাদের তোমাদের হাতে সমর্পণ করে দেব।”

And Phinehas, the son of Elazar, the son of Aaron, stood before it in those days, ) saying, shall I yet continue to go out to battle with the children of Benjamin my brother, or shall I forbear? And the Lord said, Go up; for tomorrow will I deliver him into thy hand.

29 পরে ইস্রায়েল গিবিয়ার চারপাশে ওৎ পেতে বসে থাকল।

And Israel sent men to lie in wait round about Gib'ah.

30 তৃতীয় দিনে তারা বিন্যামীন গোষ্ঠীভুক্ত লোকদের বিরুদ্ধে উঠে গেল এবং গিবিয়ার বিরুদ্ধে অবস্থান নিল, যেভাবে আগেও তারা নিয়েছিল।

And the children of Israel went up against the children of Benjamin on the third day, and put themselves in array against Gib'ah, as at previous times.

31 বিন্যামীন গোষ্ঠীভুক্ত লোকেরা ইস্রায়েলীদের সম্মুখীন হওয়ার জন্য বেরিয়ে এল এবং তাদের নগর থেকে দূরে আকৃষ্ট করা হল। আগের মতোই তারা ইস্রায়েলীদের হত্যা করতে শুরু করল, তাতে খোলা মাঠে এবং পথের উপরে—একটি বেথেলের অভিমুখে ও অন্যটি গিবিয়ার অভিমুখে, প্রায় ত্রিশজন মরে পড়ে থাকল।

And the children of Benjamin went out against the people, and were drawn away from the city; and they began to smite some of the people, and kill, as at previous times, in the highways, of which one goeth up to Beth-el, and the other to Gib'ah in the field, about thirty men of Israel.

32 একদিকে বিন্যামীন গোষ্ঠীভুক্ত লোকেরা বলছিল, “আগের মতোই আমরা ওদের পরাজিত করছি,” অন্যদিকে ইস্রায়েলীরা বলছিল, “এসো আমরা পিছিয়ে যাই এবং নগর থেকে ওদের পথের দিকে আকর্ষণ করি।”

And the children of Benjamin said, They are defeated before us, as at the first. But the children of Israel said, Let us flee, and draw them from the city unto the highways.

33 ইস্রায়েলের লোকজন সবাই তাদের স্থান থেকে সরে এসে বায়াল-তামরে অবস্থান গ্রহণ করল, এবং ওৎ পেতে বসে থাকা ইস্রায়েলীরা গিবিয়ার পশ্চিমদিকে অবস্থিত তাদের গুপ্ত স্থান ছেড়ে বেরিয়ে এল।

And all the men of Israel rose up out of their place, and put themselves in array at Ba'al-thamar: and those that lay in wait of Israel rushed forth out of their place, out of the meadows of Gib'ah.

34 পরে ইস্রায়েলের 10,000 জন যোগ্যতাসম্পন্ন যুবক সামনে থেকে গিবিয়ার উপর আক্রমণ চালাল। সেই যুদ্ধ এত ধুন্ধুমার হল যে বিন্যামীন গোষ্ঠীভুক্ত লোকেরা বুঝতেই পারেনি যে বিপর্যয় ঘনিয়ে এসেছে।

And there came against Gib'ah ten thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and the battle was severe; but they knew not that the evil was overtaking them.

35 সদাপ্রভু ইস্রায়েলের সামনে বিন্যামীনকে পরাজিত করলেন, এবং সেদিন ইস্রায়েলীরা বিন্যামীন গোষ্ঠীভুক্ত 25,100 জন লোককে হত্যা করল। তারা সবাই ছিল তরোয়ালধারী সৈনিক।

And the Lord smote Benjamin before Israel; and the children of Israel destroyed of the Benjamites on that day twenty and five thousand and one hundred men: all these were those that drew the sword.

36 তখন বিন্যামীন গোষ্ঠীভুক্ত লোকেরা দেখল যে তারা পরাজিত হয়েছে। ইত্যবসরে ইস্রায়েলের লোকজন বিন্যামীন গোষ্ঠীভুক্ত লোকদের সামনে থেকে পালিয়ে গেল, কারণ তারা সেইসব লোকের উপরে নির্ভর করছিল, যারা গিবিয়ার কাছে ওৎ পেতে বসেছিল।

And the children of Benjamin saw that they were defeated; for the men of Israel gave place to the Benjamites, because they trusted unto those that lay in wait whom they had set against Gib'ah.

37 যারা ওৎ পেতে বসেছিল, তারা আচমকাই গিবিয়াতে ঢুকে পড়ল, এবং চারপাশে ছড়িয়ে গিয়ে তরোয়াল চালিয়ে নগরবাসী সবাইকে আঘাত করল।

And those in ambush hastened, and spread themselves over Gib'ah; and those that lay in wait moved along, and smote all the city with the edge of the sword.

38 ইস্রায়েলীরা ওৎ পেতে থাকা লোকদের বলে দিয়েছিল, যেন তারা নগর থেকে ধোঁয়াযুক্ত বিশাল মেঘ ছড়িয়ে দেয়,

Now there was an understanding between the men of Israel and those that lay in wait, that they should make an abundance of columns of smoke rise up out of the city.

39 এবং তখনই ইস্রায়েলীরা পালটা আক্রমণ করবে। বিন্যামীন গোষ্ঠীভুক্ত লোকেরা ইস্রায়েলীদের (প্রায় ত্রিশ জনকে) হত্যা করতে শুরু করল, এবং তারা বলল, “প্রথমবারের যুদ্ধের মতোই আমরা তাদের পরাজিত করছি।”

And when the men of Israel turned round in the battle, and Benjamin began to smite and kill of the men of Israel about thirty persons; for they said, Surely they are entirely defeated before us, as in the first battle:

40 কিন্তু নগর থেকে যখন ধোঁয়ার স্তম্ভ উপরে উঠতে শুরু করল, তখন বিন্যামীন গোষ্ঠীভুক্ত লোকেরা মুখ ফিরিয়ে দেখল যে সমগ্র নগর থেকে গলগল করে ধোঁয়া আকাশে উঠে যাচ্ছে।

Then began the cloud to arise up out of the city as a pillar of smoke; and when the Benjamites looked behind them, behold, the flames of all the city were ascending up to heaven.

41 তখন ইস্রায়েলীরাও তাদের পালটা আক্রমণ করল, এবং বিন্যামীন গোষ্ঠীভুক্ত লোকেরা আতঙ্কিত হয়ে পড়ল, কারণ তারা বুঝতে পারল যে তাদের উপরে বিপর্যয় নেমে এসেছে।

And when the men of Israel turned again, the men of Benjamin were amazed; for they saw that the evil had overtaken them.

42 অতএব তারা ইস্রায়েলীদের কাছ থেকে মরুপ্রান্তরের দিকে পালিয়ে গেল, কিন্তু তারা যুদ্ধ এড়িয়ে পালাতে পারল না। আর যেসব ইস্রায়েলী লোকজন নগর থেকে বেরিয়ে এসেছিল, তারা সেখানেই তাদের হত্যা করল।

Therefore they turned round before the men of Israel unto the way to the wilderness; but the battle overtook them; and those who came out of the cities destroyed them in the midst of them.

43 ইস্রায়েলীরা বিন্যামীন গোষ্ঠীভুক্ত লোকদের ঘিরে ধরল, তাড়া করল এবং খুব সহজেই পূর্বদিকে গিবিয়ার কাছে গিয়ে তাদের ছারখার করে দিল।

They enclosed the Benjamites round about, chased them, they overtook them in their places of rest, as far as opposite to Gib'ah toward the rising of the sun.

44 বিন্যামীন গোষ্ঠীভুক্ত 18,000 লোক নিহত হল। তারা সবাই ছিল বীর যোদ্ধা।

And there fell of Benjamin eighteen thousand men: all these were men of valor.

45 তারা যখন মরুপ্রান্তরের দিকে পিছু ফিরে রিম্মোণ পাষাণ-পাথরের দিকে পালিয়ে গেল, তখন ইস্রায়েলীরা পথেই 5,000 জন লোককে হত্যা করল। গিদোম পর্যন্ত এগিয়ে গিয়ে তারা বিন্যামীন গোষ্ঠীভুক্ত লোকদের পশ্চাদ্ধাবন করে গেল এবং আরও 2,000 লোককে হত্যা করল।

And they turned and fled toward the wilderness unto the rock of Rimmon; and they gleaned of them in the highways five thousand men; and they pursued hard after them as far as Gid'om, and slew of them two thousand men.

46 সেদিন বিন্যামীন গোষ্ঠীভুক্ত 25,000 তরোয়ালধারী লোক নিহত হল। তারা সবাই ছিল বীর যোদ্ধা।

So that all who fell on that day of Benjamin were twenty and five thousand men that drew the sword: all these were men of valor.

47 কিন্তু তাদের মধ্যে 600 জন লোক মরুপ্রান্তরের দিকে পিছু ফিরে রিম্মোণ পাষাণ-পাথরের দিকে পালিয়ে গেল এবং চার মাস তারা সেখানেই থাকল।

But six hundred men turned and fled into the wilderness unto the rock Rimmon, and they abode on the rock Rimmon four months.

48 ইস্রায়েলী লোকজন বিন্যামীন গোষ্ঠীর অধিকারভুক্ত এলাকায় ফিরে গেল এবং সব নগরে তরোয়াল চালিয়ে মানুষ, পশুপাল ও আরও যা যা পাওয়া গেল, সেসব ছারখার করে দিল। তারা যত নগর পেল, সেগুলিতে আগুন জ্বালিয়ে দিল।

And the men of Israel turned again upon the children of Benjamin, and smote them with the edge of the sword, as well the men of every city, as the beasts, and all that was found: also all the cities that they came upon did they set on fire.
