1 একদিন শিম্শোন গাজাতে গিয়ে সেখানে এক বেশ্যাকে দেখতে পেয়ে তার সঙ্গে রাত কাটালেন।
And Samson went to Gazah, and saw there a harlot, and went in to her.
2 গাজার লোকজনকে বলা হল, “শিম্শোন এখানে এসেছে!” অতএব তারা সেই স্থানটি চারদিক থেকে ঘিরে ধরল এবং নগরের প্রবেশদ্বারে সারারাত ধরে তাঁর জন্য অপেক্ষা করে থাকল। তারা এই কথা বলে সারারাত নিশ্চল হয়ে থাকল যে, “ভোর হওয়ামাত্রই আমরা তাকে হত্যা করব।”
[And it was told] the Gazathites, saying, Samson is come hither. And they surrounded [him], and laid wait for him all night at the gate of the city, and were quiet all the night, saying, In the morning light we will kill him.
3 কিন্তু শিম্শোন সেখানে শুধু মাঝরাত পর্যন্ত শুয়ে থাকলেন। পরে তিনি উঠে পড়লেন ও নগরের প্রবেশদ্বারের পাল্লা এবং দুটি থাম ও খিল—সবকিছু ধরে উপড়ে ফেললেন। তিনি সেগুলি কাঁধে চাপিয়ে সেই পাহাড়ের চূড়ায় বয়ে নিয়ে গেলেন, যেটি হিব্রোণের মুখোমুখি অবস্থিত ছিল।
And Samson lay till midnight; and he arose at midnight, and seized the doors of the gate of the city, and the two posts, and tore them up with the bar, and put [them] upon his shoulders, and carried them up to the top of the mountain that is before Hebron.
4 কিছুকাল পর, শিম্শোন সোরেক উপত্যকার এক মহিলার প্রেমে পড়লেন, যার নাম দলীলা।
And it came to pass afterwards that he loved a woman in the valley of Sorek, whose name was Delilah.
5 ফিলিস্তিনী শাসনকর্তারা সেই মহিলাটির কাছে গিয়ে বললেন, “দেখো, যদি তুমি ছলে-বলে-কৌশলে তার কাছ থেকে তার মহাশক্তির রহস্যটি এবং কীভাবে আমরা তাকে বশে আনতে পারব, তা জেনে নিতে পারো, যেন আমরা তাকে বেঁধে ফেলতে ও জব্দ করতে পারি, তবে আমাদের মধ্যে প্রত্যেকে তোমাকে 1,100 শেকল করে রুপো দেব।”
And the lords of the Philistines came up to her, and said to her, Persuade him, and see in what his great strength is, and with what we may prevail against him, that we may bind him to overpower him; and we will each give thee eleven hundred silver-pieces.
6 অতএব দলীলা শিম্শোনকে বলল, “তোমার মহাশক্তির রহস্যটি এবং কীভাবে তোমাকে বেঁধে বশে আনা যায়, তা আমাকে বলে দাও।”
Then Delilah said to Samson, Tell me, I pray thee, in what is thy great strength, and with what thou mightest be bound to overpower thee.
7 শিম্শোন তাকে উত্তর দিলেন, “কেউ যদি ধনুকের এমন তাজা সাত-গাছি ছিলা দিয়ে আমাকে বাঁধে, যেগুলি শুকনো হয়নি, তবে আমি অন্য যে কোনো লোকের মতো দুর্বল হয়ে পড়ব।”
And Samson said to her, If they should bind me with seven fresh cords which have not been dried, then should I be weak, and be as another man.
8 তখন ফিলিস্তিনী শাসনকর্তারা দলীলাকে ধনুকের এমন তাজা সাত-গাছি ছিলা এনে দিলেন, যেগুলি শুকনো হয়নি, এবং সে সেগুলি দিয়ে শিম্শোনকে বেঁধে ফেলল।
Then the lords of the Philistines brought up to her seven fresh cords which had not been dried, and she bound him with them.
9 সেই ঘরে তখন কয়েকজন লোক লুকিয়ে ছিল। দলীলা তাঁকে ডাক দিয়ে বলল, “শিম্শোন, ফিলিস্তিনীরা তোমাকে ধরতে এসেছে!” কিন্তু যেভাবে আগুনের সংস্পর্শে এসে এক টুকরো দড়ি ছিঁড়ে যায়, ঠিক সেভাবে তিনি খুব সহজেই ধনুকের ছিলাগুলি দুম করে ছিঁড়ে ফেললেন। অতএব তাঁর শক্তির রহস্যটি জানা গেল না।
Now she had liers in wait abiding in the chamber; and she said to him, The Philistines are upon thee, Samson! And he broke the cords, as a thread of tow is broken when it touches the fire; and his strength was not known.
10 পরে দলীলা শিম্শোনকে বলল, “তুমি আমাকে বোকা বানিয়েছ; তুমি আমাকে মিথ্যা কথা বলেছ। এখন এসো, আমাকে বলে দাও কীভাবে তোমাকে বাঁধা যাবে?”
And Delilah said to Samson, Behold, thou hast mocked me and told me lies. Now tell me, I pray thee, with what thou mightest be bound.
11 শিম্শোন বললেন, “যদি কেউ এমন নতুন দড়ি দিয়ে আমাকে শক্ত করে বাঁধে, যা আগে কখনও ব্যবহার করা হয়নি, তবে আমি অন্য যে কোনো লোকের মতো দুর্বল হয়ে পড়ব।”
And he said to her, If they should bind me fast with new ropes, with which no work has been done, then should I be weak, and be as another man.
12 অতএব দলীলা কয়েকগাছি নতুন দড়ি নিয়ে সেগুলি দিয়ে শিম্শোনকে বেঁধে ফেলল। পরে, ঘরে লুকিয়ে থাকা লোকজনের সঙ্গে মিলে সে তাকে ডাক দিয়ে বলল, “শিম্শোন, ফিলিস্তিনীরা তোমাকে ধরতে এসেছে!” কিন্তু শিম্শোন তাঁর হাত দুটি থেকে দড়িগুলি এমনভাবে দুম করে ছিঁড়ে ফেললেন যেন সেগুলি বুঝি নেহাতই সুতোমাত্র।
And Delilah took new ropes, and bound him with them, and said to him, The Philistines are upon thee, Samson! Now there were liers in wait abiding in the chamber. And he broke them from off his arms like a thread.
13 দলীলা তখন শিম্শোনকে বলল, “সবসময় তুমি আমাকে বোকা বানিয়েই আসছ এবং আমাকে মিথ্যা কথাই বলেছ। এখন বলো দেখি, কীভাবে তোমাকে বাঁধা যাবে?” শিম্শোন উত্তর দিলেন, “তুমি যদি আমার মাথার সাত-গাছি চুল তাঁতের বুননের সাথে বুনে সেগুলি গোঁজের সঙ্গে শক্ত করে আটকে দাও, তবে আমি অন্য যে কোনো লোকের মতো দুর্বল হয়ে পড়ব।” অতএব শিম্শোন যখন ঘুমিয়েছিলেন, দলীলা তখন তাঁর মাথার সাত-গাছি চুল নিয়ে সেগুলি তাঁতের বুননের সাথে বুনলো
And Delilah said to Samson, Hitherto thou hast mocked me and told me lies. Tell me with what thou mightest be bound. And he said to her, If thou shouldest weave the seven locks of my head with the web.
14 এবং গোঁজের সঙ্গে শক্ত করে আটকে দিল। আবার সে শিম্শোনকে ডেকে বলল, “শিম্শোন, ফিলিস্তিনীরা তোমাকে ধরতে এসেছে!” শিম্শোন ঘুম থেকে জেগে উঠেই টান মেরে গোঁজসমেত তাঁতযন্ত্র ও বুনন—সবকিছু উপড়ে ফেললেন।
And she fastened it with the pin, and said to him, The Philistines are upon thee, Samson! And he awoke out of his sleep, and tore out the pin of the beam, and the web.
15 তখন দলীলা তাঁকে বলল, “তুমি কীভাবে বলতে পারো, ‘আমি তোমাকে ভালোবাসি,’ যখন তুমি আমাকে বিশ্বাস করে কিছু বলতেই চাইছ না? এই নিয়ে তিনবার তুমি আমাকে বোকা বানালে এবং তোমার মহাশক্তির রহস্য আমাকে বললে না।”
Then she said to him, How canst thou say, I love thee, when thy heart is not with me? these three times hast thou mocked me, and hast not told me in what is thy great strength.
16 এভাবে দিনের পর দিন বিরক্তিকরভাবে সে শিম্শোনকে খুঁচিয়ে খুঁচিয়ে তাঁর প্রাণ ওষ্ঠাগত করে তুলছিল।
And it came to pass when she pressed him daily with her words and urged him, that his soul was vexed unto death;
17 অতএব তিনি দলীলাকে সবকিছু বলে দিলেন। “আমার মাথায় কখনও ক্ষুর ব্যবহৃত হয়নি,” তিনি বললেন, “কারণ মায়ের গর্ভ থেকেই আমি এক নাসরীয়রূপে ঈশ্বরের উদ্দেশে উৎসর্গীকৃত হয়ে আছি। আমার মাথা যদি কামানো হয়, তবে আমার শক্তি আমাকে ছেড়ে চলে যাবে, এবং আমি অন্য যে কোনো লোকের মতো দুর্বল হয়ে পড়ব।”
and he told her all his heart, and said to her, There has not come a razor upon my head; for I am a Nazarite of God from my mother's womb; if I should be shaven, then my strength would go from me, and I should be weak, and be like all mankind.
18 দলীলা যখন দেখল যে শিম্শোন তাকে সবকিছু বলে দিয়েছে, তখন সে ফিলিস্তিনী শাসনকর্তাদের কাছে খবর পাঠাল, “আপনারা আর একবার চলে আসুন; সে আমাকে সবকিছু বলে দিয়েছে।” অতএব ফিলিস্তিনী শাসনকর্তারা রুপো হাতে নিয়ে ফিরে এলেন।
And Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart, and she sent and called for the lords of the Philistines, saying, Come up this time, for he has told me all his heart. And the lords of the Philistines came up to her, and brought the money in their hand.
19 শিম্শোনকে কোলে নিয়ে ঘুম পাড়িয়ে, সে একজন লোককে ডেকে তাকে দিয়ে শিম্শোনের মাথার সাত-গাছি চুল কামিয়ে দিল, এবং এভাবেই তাকে জব্দ করতে শুরু করলো। আর শিম্শোনের শক্তি তাঁকে ছেড়ে গেল।
And she made him sleep upon her knees, and called a man, and she caused him to shave off the seven locks of his head; and she began to overpower him, and his strength went from him.
20 তখন দলীলা তাঁকে ডেকে বলল, “শিম্শোন, ফিলিস্তিনীরা তোমাকে ধরতে এসেছে!” শিম্শোন ঘুম থেকে জেগে উঠে ভাবলেন, “আমি আগের মতোই বাইরে গিয়ে গা ঝাড়া দিয়ে মুক্ত হয়ে যাব।” কিন্তু তিনি বোঝেননি যে সদাপ্রভু তাঁকে ছেড়ে চলে গিয়েছেন।
And she said, The Philistines are upon thee, Samson! And he awoke out of his sleep, and thought, I will go out as at other times before, and disengage myself. And he knew not that Jehovah had departed from him.
21 পরে ফিলিস্তিনীরা তাঁকে ধরে তাঁর চোখদুটি উপড়ে ফেলল ও এবং তাঁকে গাজায় নিয়ে গেল। ব্রোঞ্জের বেড়ি দিয়ে তাঁকে বেঁধে, তারা জেলখানায় তাঁকে জাঁতা পেষাই-এর কাজে লাগিয়ে দিল।
And the Philistines seized him, and put out his eyes, and brought him down to Gazah, and bound him with fetters of bronze; and he had to grind in the prison-house.
22 কিন্তু মাথা কামানোর পরেও তাঁর মাথার চুল আবার বাড়তে শুরু করল।
But the hair of his head began to grow after he was shaved.
23 ইত্যবসরে ফিলিস্তিনী শাসনকর্তারা তাদের দেবতা দাগোনের উদ্দেশে এক মহাবলি উৎসর্গ করার ও উৎসব পালন করার জন্য সমবেত হয়ে বললেন, “আমাদের দেবতা আমাদের শত্রু শিম্শোনকে আমাদের হাতে সমর্পণ করে দিয়েছেন।”
Then the lords of the Philistines gathered together to sacrifice a great sacrifice to Dagon their god, and to rejoice; for they said, Our god has given Samson our enemy into our hands.
24 শিম্শোনকে দেখে লোকেরা তাদের আরাধ্য দেবতার প্রশংসা করে বলল, “আমাদের দেবতা আমাদের শত্রুকে সঁপে দিয়েছেন আমাদের হাতে, এ সেই, যে আমাদের দেশটি করেছে ধ্বংস আর অসংখ্য লোককে করেছে হত্যা।”
And when the people saw him, they praised their god; for they said, Our god has given into our hands our enemy, and the destroyer of our country, even him who multiplied our slain.
25 খোশমেজাজে তারা চিৎকার করে বলল, “আমাদের চিত্ত-বিনোদনের জন্য শিম্শোনকে নিয়ে এসো।” অতএব তারা জেলখানা থেকে তাঁকে ডেকে আনালো, এবং তিনি তাদের সামনে কসরত দেখাতে লাগলেন। যখন তারা তাঁকে স্তম্ভগুলির মাঝখানে দাঁড় করিয়ে দিল,
And it came to pass when their hearts were merry, that they said, Call for Samson, that he may make us sport. And they called for Samson out of the prison-house, and he played before them; and they set him between the pillars.
26 তখন যে দাসটি তাঁর হাত ধরে রেখেছিল, তাকে শিম্শোন বললেন, “আমাকে এমন জায়গায় দাঁড় করিয়ে দাও, যেখানে আমি এই মন্দিরের ভারবহনকারী স্তম্ভগুলি যেন অনুভব করতে পারি ও যেন সেগুলির গায়ে হেলান দিয়ে দাঁড়াতে পারি।”
And Samson said to the lad that held him by the hand, Let loose of me, and suffer me to feel the pillars upon which the house stands, that I may lean upon them.
27 মন্দিরটি পুরুষ ও মহিলার ভিড়ে পরিপূর্ণ হয়েছিল; ফিলিস্তিনীদের সব শাসনকর্তাও সেখানে উপস্থিত ছিলেন, এবং ছাদের উপর থেকে প্রায় 3,000 নরনারী শিম্শোনের কসরত দেখছিল।
Now the house was full of men and women; and all the lords of the Philistines were there; and upon the roof there were about three thousand men and women, who looked on while Samson made sport.
28 তখন শিম্শোন সদাপ্রভুর কাছে প্রার্থনা করলেন, “হে সার্বভৌম সদাপ্রভু, আমাকে স্মরণ করো। দয়া করে ঈশ্বর আর একবার শুধু আমাকে শক্তি জোগাও, এবং একটিমাত্র ঘুষিতেই আমার দুই চোখ উপড়ে নেওয়ার প্রতিশোধ ফিলিস্তিনীদের উপর আমায় নিতে দাও।”
And Samson called to Jehovah, and said, Lord Jehovah, remember me, I pray thee, and strengthen me, I pray thee, only this once, O God, that I may take one vengeance upon the Philistines for my two eyes.
29 পরে শিম্শোন মাঝখানের সেই দুটি স্তম্ভের কাছে পৌঁছে গেলেন, যেগুলির উপর ভর দিয়ে মন্দিরটি দাঁড়িয়েছিল। ডান হাত একটির ও বাঁ হাত অন্যটির দিকে বাড়িয়ে দিয়ে সেগুলি জড়িয়ে ধরে,
And Samson took hold of the two middle pillars upon which the house stood (and he supported himself upon them), the one with his right hand and the other with his left.
30 শিম্শোন বললেন, “ফিলিস্তিনীদের সঙ্গে আমারও মৃত্যু হোক!” পরে তিনি সর্বশক্তি দিয়ে সেগুলিকে ধাক্কা দিলেন, এবং মন্দিরটির ভিতরে থাকা শাসনকর্তাদের ও সব লোকজনের উপরে সেটি ভেঙে পড়ল। এভাবে শিম্শোন বেঁচে থাকার সময় যত না লোককে হত্যা করেছিলেন, মরার সময় তার চেয়েও বেশি লোককে হত্যা করলেন।
And Samson said, Let me die with the Philistines! And he bowed himself with might; and the house fell on the lords, and on all the people that were therein. So the dead that he slew at his death were more than those whom he had slain in his life.
31 পরে তাঁর ভাইরা এবং তাঁর বাবার সমগ্র পরিবার তাঁকে আনতে গেলেন। তারা তাঁকে ফিরিয়ে এনে সরা ও ইষ্টায়োলের মাঝখানে অবস্থিত তাঁর বাবা মানোহের সমাধিতে তাঁকে কবর দিলেন। শিম্শোন কুড়ি বছর ইস্রায়েলকে নেতৃত্ব দিয়েছিলেন।
And his brethren came down, and all the house of his father, and took him, and brought him up, and buried him between Zoreah and Eshtaol in the sepulchre of Manoah his father. And he had judged Israel twenty years.
