1 অবীমেলকের পরে ইস্রায়েলকে রক্ষা করার জন্য ইষাখর গোষ্ঠীভুক্ত তোলয় নামক একজন লোক উত্থাপিত হলেন; তিনি দোদয়ের নাতি ও পূয়ার ছেলে। তিনি ইফ্রয়িমের পার্বত্য প্রদেশের শামীরে বসবাস করতেন।

After Abimelech's time, Tola, son of Puah, son of Dodo, from the tribe of Issachar, came on the scene to save Israel. He lived in the town of Shamir, in the hill country of Ephraim.

2 তেইশ বছর তিনি ইস্রায়েলকে নেতৃত্ব দিলেন; পরে তিনি মারা গেলেন, এবং শামীরেই তাঁকে কবর দেওয়া হল।

He led Israel as a judge for twenty-three years. Then he died and was buried in Shamir.

3 তাঁর পরে এলেন গিলিয়দীয় যায়ীর, যিনি বাইশ বছর ইস্রায়েলকে নেতৃত্ব দিলেন।

After Tola came Jair from Gilead, who led Israel as a judge for twenty-two years.

4 তাঁর ত্রিশজন ছেলে ছিল, যারা ত্রিশটি গাধার পিঠে চড়ে ঘুরে বেড়াত। গিলিয়দে ত্রিশটি নগর তারা নিয়ন্ত্রণ করত, যেগুলি আজও হবোৎ-যায়ীর নামে পরিচিত।

He had thirty sons who rode thirty donkeys. They had thirty towns in the land of Gilead, which to this day are called the Towns of Jair.

5 যায়ীর মারা যাওয়ার পর তাঁকে কমোনে কবর দেওয়া হল।

Jair died and he was buried in Kamon.

6 ইস্রায়েলীরা আবার সদাপ্রভুর দৃষ্টিতে যা মন্দ তাই করল। তারা বায়াল-দেবতাদের, অষ্টারোৎ দেবীদের, এবং অরামের দেবতাদের, সীদোনের দেবতাদের, মোয়াবের দেবতাদের, অম্মোনীয়দের দেবতাদের ও ফিলিস্তিনীদের দেবতাদের সেবা করতে লাগল। আর যেহেতু ইস্রায়েলীরা সদাপ্রভুকে ত্যাগ করল এবং আর তাঁর সেবা করল না,

Once again the Israelites did what was evil in the Lord's sight. They worshiped the Baals and the Ashtoreths, as well as the gods of Aram, Sidon, and Moab, and the gods of the Ammonites and Philistines. They rejected the Lord and did not worship him.

7 তাই তাদের বিরুদ্ধে তিনি ক্রুদ্ধ হলেন। তিনি সেই ফিলিস্তিনী ও অম্মোনীয়দের হাতে তাদের বিক্রি করে দিলেন,

So the Lord became angry with Israel, and he sold them to the Philistines and the Ammonites.

8 যারা সেই বছর তাদের চূর্ণবিচূর্ণ ও সর্বনাশ করে ছাড়লো। ইমোরীয়দের দেশ গিলিয়দে, জর্ডন নদীর পূর্বপারে বসবাসকারী সব ইস্রায়েলীর উপরে তারা আঠারো বছর ধরে দমনপীড়ন চালাল।

That year and for eighteen more years they harassed and oppressed the Israelites, all the Israelites that lived on the east side of the Jordan in Gilead, the land of the Amorites.

9 অম্মোনীয়রাও যিহূদা, বিন্যামীন ও ইফ্রয়িমের বিরুদ্ধে যুদ্ধ করার জন্য জর্ডন নদী পার হয়ে আসত; ইস্রায়েল চরম দুর্দশাগ্রস্ত হল।

The Ammonites also crossed the Jordan to attack Judah, Benjamin, and Ephraim, causing terrible trouble for Israel.

10 তখন ইস্রায়েলীরা সদাপ্রভুর কাছে কেঁদে বলল, “আমরা তোমার বিরুদ্ধে পাপ করেছি, আমাদের ঈশ্বরকে ত্যাগ করেছি ও বায়াল-দেবতাদের সেবা করেছি।”

The Israelites cried out to the Lord for help, saying, “We have sinned against you, rejecting our God and worshiping the Baals.”

11 সদাপ্রভু তাদের উত্তর দিলেন, “যখন মিশরীয়, ইমোরীয়, অম্মোনীয়, ফিলিস্তিনী,

The Lord replied to the Israelites, “Didn't I save you from the Egyptians, the Amorites, the Ammonites, the Philistines,

12 সীদোনীয়, অমালেকীয় ও মায়োনীয়রা তোমাদের উপর দমনপীড়ন চালাচ্ছিল এবং তোমরা আমার কাছে সাহায্য চেয়ে কেঁদেছিলে, তখন কি আমি তাদের হাত থেকে তোমাদের রক্ষা করিনি?

the Sidonians, the Amalekites, and the Maonites? When they attacked you, and you cried out to me for help, didn't I save you from them?

13 কিন্তু তোমরা আমাকে ত্যাগ করে অন্যান্য দেবতাদের সেবা করলে, তাই আমি আর তোমাদের রক্ষা করব না।

But you have rejected me and worshiped other gods, so I won't save you again.

14 যাও ও সেই দেবতাদের কাছে গিয়ে কাঁদো যাদের তোমরা মনোনীত করেছিলে। সংকটের সময় তারাই তোমাদের রক্ষা করুক!”

Go and cry out for help to the gods you have chosen. Let them save you in your time of trouble.”

15 কিন্তু ইস্রায়েলীরা সদাপ্রভুকে বলল, “আমরা পাপ করেছি। তোমার যা ভালো বলে মনে হয়, আমাদের প্রতি তাই করো, কিন্তু দয়া করে এখন আমাদের রক্ষা করো।”

The Israelites said to the Lord, “We have sinned! Treat us in whatever way you think you should, only please save us now!”

16 পরে তারা তাদের মধ্যে থাকা বিজাতীয় দেবতাদের দূর করে দিল ও সদাপ্রভুর সেবা করল। ইস্রায়েলের এই দুর্দশা আর তিনি সহ্য করতে পারলেন না।

So they got rid of the foreign gods they had and worshiped the Lord. And the Lord couldn't stand Israel's misery any longer.

17 অম্মোনীয়রা যখন অস্ত্রশস্ত্রে সজ্জিত হয়ে গিলিয়দে শিবির স্থাপন করার জন্য আহূত হল, তখন ইস্রায়েলীরাও মিস্‌পাতে সমবেত হয়ে শিবির স্থাপন করল।

The Ammonite armies had been called up and were camped in Gilead. The Israelites assembled and camped at Mizpah.

18 গিলিয়দের অধিবাসীদের নেতারা পরস্পর বলাবলি করল, “যে কেউ অম্মোনীয়দের আক্রমণ করার ক্ষেত্রে নেতৃত্ব দেবে, সেই হবে সেইসব লোকজনের সর্দার, যারা গিলিয়দে বসবাস করে।”

The commanders of the people of Gilead agreed among themselves, “Whoever leads the attack on the Ammonites will become ruler over everyone who lives in Gilead.”
