1 “ডাকতে চাইলে ডাকো, কিন্তু কে তোমায় উত্তর দেবে? পবিত্রজনেদের মধ্যে তুমি কার শরণাপন্ন হবে?
Call, I pray thee! Is there any that answereth thee? and to which of the holy ones wilt thou turn?
2 বিরক্তিভাব মূর্খকে হত্যা করে, আর হিংসা সরল লোককে বধ করে।
For vexation killeth the foolish man, and envy slayeth the simple.
3 আমি স্বয়ং এক মূর্খকে মূল বিস্তার করতে দেখেছি, কিন্তু হঠাৎ তার বাড়ি অভিশপ্ত হয়ে গেল।
I myself saw the foolish taking root, but suddenly I cursed his habitation.
4 তার সন্তানেরা নিরাপত্তাহীন হল, রক্ষক বিনা কাছারিতে নিষ্পেষিত হল।
His children are far from safety, and they are crushed in the gate, and there is no deliverer:
5 ক্ষুধার্ত লোক তার ফসল খেয়ে ফেলে, কাঁটাঝোপ থেকেও সেগুলি তুলে নেয়, আর তৃষ্ণার্তরা তার সম্পত্তির জন্য আকাঙ্ক্ষিত হয়।
Whose harvest the hungry eateth up, and taketh even out of the thorns; and the snare gapeth for his substance.
6 কারণ মাটি থেকে কষ্ট উৎপন্ন হয় না, জমি থেকেও অনিষ্ট অঙ্কুরিত হয় না।
For evil cometh not forth from the dust, neither doth trouble spring out of the ground;
7 তবুও মানুষ অসুবিধা ভোগ করার জন্যই জন্মায়, ঠিক যেভাবে অগ্নিস্ফুলিঙ্গ উপরের দিকে উঠে যায়।
For man is born to trouble, as the sparks fly upwards.
8 “কিন্তু আমি যদি তোমার জায়গায় থাকতাম, আমি ঈশ্বরের কাছে আবেদন জানাতাম; তাঁর কাছেই আমার উদ্দেশ্য ব্যক্ত করতাম।
But as for me I will seek unto God, and unto God commit my cause;
9 তিনি এমন সব আশ্চর্য কাজ করেন যা অনুভব করা যায় না, এমন সব অলৌকিক কাজ করেন যা গুনে রাখা যায় না।
Who doeth great things and unsearchable, marvellous things without number;
10 তিনি ধরণীতে বৃষ্টির জোগান দেন; তিনি গ্রামাঞ্চলে জল পাঠান।
Who giveth rain on the face of the earth, and sendeth waters on the face of the fields;
11 সহজসরল লোককে তিনি উন্নত করেন, আর শোকার্তদের নিরাপত্তা দেন।
Setting up on high those that are low; and mourners are exalted to prosperity.
12 ধূর্তদের পরিকল্পনা তিনি ব্যর্থ করেন, যেন তাদের হাত কোনও সাফল্য লাভ না করে।
He disappointeth the devices of the crafty, and their hands carry not out the enterprise.
13 জ্ঞানীদের তিনি তাদের ধূর্ততায় ধরে ফেলেন, আর শঠের ফন্দি দ্রুত নিশ্চিহ্ন হয়ে যায়।
He taketh the wise in their own craftiness; and the counsel of the wily is carried headlong:
14 দিনের বেলাতেই তাদের উপর অন্ধকার নেমে আসে, মধ্যাহ্নে তারা রাতের মতো হাতড়ে বেড়ায়।
They meet with darkness in the daytime, and grope at midday as in the night.
15 অভাবগ্রস্তকে তিনি শব্দবাণ থেকে রক্ষা করেন; তিনি তাদের শক্তিশালীদের খপ্পর থেকে রক্ষা করেন।
And he saveth the needy from the sword, from their mouth, and from the hand of the mighty.
16 তাই দরিদ্র আশায় বুক বাঁধে, আর অবিচার নিজের মুখে কুলুপ আঁটে।
So the poor hath what he hopeth for, and unrighteousness stoppeth her mouth.
17 “ধন্য সেই জন যাকে ঈশ্বর সংশোধন করেন; তাই সর্বশক্তিমানের শাস্তি তুচ্ছজ্ঞান কোরো না।
Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth; therefore despise not the chastening of the Almighty.
18 কারণ তিনি আঘাত দেন, কিন্তু শুশ্রুষাও করেন; তিনি ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত করেন, কিন্তু তাঁর হাত সুস্থও করে তোলে।
For he maketh sore, and bindeth up; he woundeth, and his hands make whole.
19 ছয়টি বিপর্যয় থেকে তিনি তোমাকে রক্ষা করবেন; সপ্তমটিতেও কোনও অনিষ্ট তোমাকে স্পর্শ করবে না।
He will deliver thee in six troubles, and in seven there shall no evil touch thee.
20 দুর্ভিক্ষের সময় তিনি তোমাকে মৃত্যু থেকে, আর যুদ্ধের সময় তরোয়ালের আঘাত থেকে রক্ষা করবেন।
In famine he will redeem thee from death, and in war from the power of the sword.
21 জিভের কশাঘাত থেকে তুমি সুরক্ষিত থাকবে, আর বিনাশকালেও ভয় পাবে না।
Thou shalt be hidden from the scourge of the tongue; and thou shalt not be afraid of destruction when it cometh.
22 ধ্বংস ও দুর্ভিক্ষ দেখে তুমি হাসবে, আর বুনো পশুদেরও ভয় পাবে না।
At destruction and famine thou shalt laugh, and of the beasts of the earth thou shalt not be afraid.
23 কারণ জমির পাথরগুলির সঙ্গে তুমি চুক্তিবদ্ধ হবে, আর বুনো পশুরাও তোমার সঙ্গে শান্তিতে থাকবে।
For thou shalt be in league with the stones of the field, and the beasts of the field shall be at peace with thee.
24 তুমি জানবে যে তোমার তাঁবু নিরাপদ; তুমি তোমার সম্পত্তির পরিমাণ যাচাই করবে ও দেখবে একটিও হারায়নি।
And thou shalt know that thy tent is in peace; and thou wilt survey thy fold, and miss nothing.
25 তুমি জানবে যে তোমার সন্তানেরা অসংখ্য হবে, ও তোমার বংশধরেরা মাটির ঘাসের মতো হবে।
And thou shalt know that thy seed is numerous, and thine offspring as the herb of the earth.
26 পূর্ণ প্রাণশক্তি নিয়ে তুমি কবরে যাবে, যেভাবে শস্যের আঁটিগুলি যথাসময়ে সংগৃহীত হয়।
Thou shalt come to the grave in a ripe age, as a shock of corn is brought in in its season.
27 “আমরা এর পরীক্ষা করেছি, আর তা সত্যি। তাই একথা শোনো ও নিজের জীবনে প্রয়োগ করো।”
Behold this, we have searched it out, so it is; hear it, and know thou it for thyself.
