ইষ্রা 4

1 যিহূদা ও বিন্যামীনদের প্রতিপক্ষেরা যখন শুনল যে নির্বাসন থেকে প্রত্যাগত ব্যক্তিরা ইস্রায়েলের আরাধ্য ঈশ্বর, সদাপ্রভুর উদ্দেশে একটি মন্দির নির্মাণ করছে,

And adversaries of Judah and Benjamin hear that the sons of the captivity are building a temple to Jehovah, God of Israel,

2 তখন তারা সরুব্বাবিল ও গোষ্ঠীপতিদের কাছে এসে বলল, “তোমাদের নির্মাণ কাজে আমরা সাহায্য করতে চাই, কারণ আমরাও তোমাদের আরাধ্য ঈশ্বরের আরাধনা করি। আসিরিয়ার রাজা এসর-হদ্দোন যখন আমাদের এদেশে বসবাস করতে এনেছেন তখন থেকেই আমরা সেই ঈশ্বরের উদ্দেশ্যে বলি উৎসর্গ করে চলেছি।”

and they draw nigh unto Zerubbabel, and unto heads of the fathers, and say to them, 'Let us build with you; for, like you, we seek to your God, and we are not sacrificing since the days of Esar-Haddon king of Asshur, who brought us up hither.'

3 কিন্তু সরুব্বাবিল, যেশূয় ও অন্যান্য গোষ্ঠীপতিরা উত্তরে বললেন, “আমাদের আরাধ্য ঈশ্বরের মন্দির নির্মাণের কার্যে তোমাদের সাহায্যের কোনও প্রয়োজন নেই। পারস্য-সম্রাট কোরসের আদেশমতো ইস্রায়েলের আরাধ্য ঈশ্বর সদাপ্রভুর জন্য আমরা নিজেরাই এই কাজ করতে পারব।”

And Zerubbabel saith to them, also Jeshua, and the rest of the heads of the fathers of Israel, 'Not for you, and for us, to build a house to our God; but we ourselves together do build to Jehovah God of Israel, as the king Cyrus, king of Persia, commanded us.'

4 তখন তাদের চারিদিকে যে সমস্ত লোক ছিল তারা যিহূদার লোকদের নিরুৎসাহ করতে চাইল এবং মন্দির নির্মাণের কাজে ভয় দেখাতে লাগল।

And it cometh to pass, the people of the land are making the hands of the people of Judah feeble, and troubling them in building,

5 তারা অর্থের বিনিময়ে কিছু লোককে নিযুক্ত করল যাদের কাজ ছিল নির্মাণ কাজের ব্যাপারে সকলকে হতাশাগ্রস্ত করে তোলা এবং এ ব্যপারে সমস্ত পরিকল্পনাই নস্যাৎ করে দেওয়া। পারস্য-সম্রাট কোরসের সময় থেকে সম্রাট দারিয়াবসের রাজত্বকাল পর্যন্ত এই চক্রান্ত চলছিল।

and are hiring against them counsellors to make void their counsel all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even till the reign of Darius king of Persia.

6 সম্রাট অহশ্বেরশের রাজত্বের শুরুতেই তারা যিহূদা ও জেরুশালেমের লোকেদের বিরুদ্ধে একটি অভিযোগ দায়ের করল।

And in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the commencement of his reign, they have written an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem;

7 পারস্য-সম্রাট অর্তক্ষস্তের শাসনকালেও বিশ্লম, মিত্রদাৎ, টাবেল ও তার সহযোগীরা সম্রাট অর্তক্ষস্তের কাছে একটি পত্র লিখল। পত্রটি অরামীয় অক্ষরে ও অরামীয় ভাষায় লেখা হয়েছিল।

and in the days of Artaxerxes have Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of his companions written unto Artaxerxes king of Persia, and the writing of the letter is written in Aramaean, and interpreted in Aramaean.

8 প্রদেশপাল রহূম, সচিব শিম্‌শয় সম্রাট অর্তক্ষস্তের কাছে জেরুশালেমের বিরুদ্ধে অভিযোগ করে সেই পত্র লিখেছিল।

Rehum counsellor, and Shimshai scribe have written a letter concerning Jerusalem to Artaxerxes the king, thus:

9 সেনাধিপতি রহূম, সচিব শিম্‌শয় ও তাদের সব সহযোগী—পারস্য, অর্কব ও ব্যাবিলনের বিচারক, কর্মকর্তা প্রশাসক, শূশনের এলমীয়েরা,

Then Rehum counsellor, and Shimshai scribe, and the rest of their companions, Dinaites, and Apharsathchites, Tarpelites, Apharsites, Archevites, Babylonians, Susanchites, (who are Elamites),

10 এবং অন্য সকল ব্যক্তি যাদের মহান ও সম্মানীয় অস্নপ্পর নির্বাসিত করেছিলেন এবং শমরিয়া ও ইউফ্রেটিস নদীর সংলগ্ন এলাকার সর্বত্র বসবাস করিয়েছেন, তাদের সকলের পক্ষে এই পত্র লেখা হয়েছিল।

and the rest of the nations that the great and honourable Asnapper removed and set in the city of Samaria, and the rest beyond the river, and at such a time:

11 (যে পত্রটি তাঁকে প্রেরণ করা হয়েছিল এটি হল তারই অনুলিপি) সম্রাট অর্তক্ষস্ত সমীপেষু, ইউফ্রেটিস নদীর সংলগ্ন এলাকার জনগণের পক্ষে, আপনার সেবকবৃন্দ:

This [is] a copy of a letter that they have sent unto him, unto Artaxerxes the king: 'Thy servants, men beyond the river, and at such a time;

12 মহামান্য সম্রাটের জ্ঞাতার্থে আপনাকে অবহিত করি, যে সকল ইহুদিরা আপনার কাছ থেকে জেরুশালেমে গিয়েছে তারা সেই রাজদ্রোহ ও দুষ্টতায় ভরা নগরটিকে পুনরায় নির্মাণ করছে। তারা নগরের প্রাচীর পুনরুদ্ধার ও ভিত্তি পুনর্নির্মাণ করছে।

Be it known to the king, that the Jews who have come up from thee unto us, have come in to Jerusalem, the rebellious and base city they are building, and the walls they have finished, and the foundations they join.

13 এছাড়াও, সম্রাটের জ্ঞাতার্থে জানাই যে যদি এই নগর পুনর্নির্মিত ও তাঁর প্রাচীর পুনর্গঠিত হয় তাহলে তারা কোনও রাজস্ব, প্রণামী ও মাশুল দেবে না। এর ফলে সম্রাটের রাজস্ব সংগ্রহ ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত হবে।

'Now, be it known to the king, that if this city be builded, and the walls finished, toll, tribute, and custom they do not give; and at length [to] the kings it doth cause loss.

14 যেহেতু আপনার প্রতি আমাদের দায়বদ্ধতা আছে এবং আমাদের উচিত হবে না সম্রাটের অসম্মান হোক এমন কিছু ঘটতে দেওয়া, সেইজন্য আপনার জ্ঞাতার্থে এই সংবাদ আপনার কাছে প্রেরণ করছি।

Now, because that the salt of the palace [is] our salt, and the nakedness of the king we have no patience to see, therefore we have sent and made known to the king;

15 আপনি দয়া করে আপনার পূর্বসূরীদের নথিপত্রগুলি ভালো করে অনুসন্ধান করে দেখুন। সেই নথিগুলি দেখলেই আপনি বুঝতে পারবেন যে এই নগরটি কেমন বিদ্রোহীভাবাপন্ন এবং রাজাদের ও প্রদেশের পক্ষে কত বিপজ্জনক। প্রাচীনকাল থেকেই এই নগরটি রাজদ্রোহী মনোভাব দেখিয়েছে। এজন্যই নগরটিকে ধ্বংস করে দেওয়া হয়েছিল।

so that he doth seek in the book of the records of thy fathers, and thou dost find in the book of the records, and dost know, that this city [is] a rebellious city, and causing loss [to] kings and provinces, and makers of sedition [are] in its midst from the days of old, therefore hath this city been wasted.

16 আমরা মহামান্য সম্রাটকে জানাই যে যদি আপনি এই নগরটি পুনর্নির্মিত হতে এবং তাঁর প্রাচীরগুলি পুনরুদ্ধার হতে দেন তাহলে ইউফ্রেটিস নদীর সংলগ্ন কোনও স্থান আর আপনার অধীনে থাকবে না।

We are making known to the king that, if this city be builded and the walls finished, by this means a portion beyond the river thou hast none.'

17 সম্রাট পত্রটির উত্তরে এই কথা লিখলেন: প্রদেশপাল রহূম, সচিব শিম্‌শয় এবং শমরিয়া ও ইউফ্রেটিস নদীর সংলগ্ন অঞ্চলে বসবাসকারী ও তাদের সহযোগীবৃন্দ: শুভেচ্ছা।

An answer hath the king sent unto Rehum counsellor, and Shimshai scribe, and the rest of their companions who are dwelling in Samaria, and the rest beyond the river, 'Peace, and at such a time:

18 আপনারা আমার কাছে যে পত্রখানি পাঠিয়েছেন সেটি আমার সামনে পাঠ করা হয়েছে এবং অনুবাদ করা হয়েছে।

The letter that ye sent unto us, explained, hath been read before me,

19 আমি একটি নির্দেশ পাঠিয়েছি এবং সেইমতো অনুসন্ধানও করা হয়েছে। সত্যিই এটি দেখা গেছে যে পূর্ব থেকেই নগরটি সম্রাটদের বিরুদ্ধে বিদ্রোহ করেছে এবং নগরটি যথার্থই বিক্ষোভ ও বিদ্রোহের জন্য কুখ্যাত।

and by me a decree hath been made, and they sought, and have found that this city from the days of old against kings is lifting up itself, and rebellion and sedition is made in it,

20 জেরুশালেম থেকেই পরাক্রমী নৃপতিগণ একদিন ইউফ্রেটিস নদীর অববাহিকার সমস্ত ভূখণ্ডে রাজত্ব করতেন। তাদের রাজস্ব, প্রণামী এবং মাশুলও যথাযথভাবে প্রদান করা হত।

and mighty kings have been over Jerusalem, even rulers over all beyond the river, and toll, tribute, and custom is given to them.

21 তোমরা শীঘ্রই ওই লোকদের কাছে এই আদেশ করো যেন তারা কাজ বন্ধ করে দেয় এবং আমি যতদিন না পুনরায় জানাচ্ছি ততদিন নগরটি যেন পুনর্নির্মিত না হয়।

'Now, make ye a decree to cause these men to cease, and this city is not builded, till by me a decree is made.

22 সাবধান, এই বিষয়ে তোমরা শিথিল মনোভাব দেখিও না। কি কারণে এই বিপজ্জনক অবস্থাকে চলতে দেওয়া হবে যা রাজার স্বার্থকে বিঘ্নিত করবে?

And beware ye of negligence in doing this; why doth the hurt become great to the loss of the kings?'

23 রহূম ও সচিব শিম্‌শয়ের কাছে যে মুহূর্তে সম্রাট অর্তক্ষস্তের এই পত্রের অনুলিপি পাঠ করা হল, তারা তৎক্ষণাৎ জেরুশালেমে ইহুদিদের কাছে গেল এবং তাদের কাজ বন্ধ করতে বাধ্য করল।

Then from the time that a copy of the letter of king Artaxerxes is read before Rehum, and Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they have gone in haste to Jerusalem, unto the Jews, and caused them to cease by force and strength;

24 এইভাবে জেরুশালেমে ঈশ্বরের মন্দির নির্মাণের কাজ বন্ধ হয়ে গেল। সম্রাট দারিয়াবসের রাজত্বের দ্বিতীয় বছর পর্যন্ত সেই কাজ স্তব্ধ হয়ে রইল।

then ceased the service of the house of God that [is] in Jerusalem, and it ceased till the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.
