1 সেই সময় শিষ্যদের সংখ্যা যখন বৃদ্ধি পাচ্ছিল, তাদের মধ্যে যারা গ্রিকভাষী ইহুদি ছিল তারা, হিব্রুভাষী ইহুদিদের বিরুদ্ধে অভিযোগ করতে লাগল, কারণ প্রতিদিনের খাবার ভাগ করার সময় তাদের বিধবারা উপেক্ষিত হচ্ছিল।
And in those dayes, as the nomber of ye disciples grewe, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians towards ye Hebrewes, because their widowes were neglected in the dayly ministring.
2 তখন সেই বারোজন সব শিষ্যকে একত্র আহ্বান করে বললেন, “খাবার পরিবেশনের জন্য ঈশ্বরের বাক্যের পরিচর্যা অবহেলা করা আমাদের পক্ষে ন্যায়সংগত হবে না।
Then the twelue called the multitude of the disciples together, and sayd, It is not meete that we should leaue the worde of God to serue the tables.
3 ভাইয়েরা, তোমাদের মধ্য থেকে এমন সাতজনকে বেছে নাও, যারা পবিত্র আত্মায় ও বিজ্ঞতায় পূর্ণ বলে সুপরিচিত। আমরা এই দায়িত্বভার তাদের উপরে দেবো
Wherefore brethren, looke ye out among you seuen men of honest report, and full of the holy Ghost, and of wisedome, which we may appoint to this busines.
4 ও আমরা প্রার্থনায় ও বাক্যের পরিচর্যায় মনোনিবেশ করব।”
And we will giue our selues continually to prayer, and to the ministration of the worde.
5 এই প্রস্তাব সমস্ত দলের কাছে সন্তোষজনক হল। তারা স্তিফানকে মনোনীত করল, যিনি বিশ্বাসে ও পবিত্র আত্মায় পরিপূর্ণ ছিলেন; এবং ফিলিপ, প্রখোর, নিকানর, তিমোন, পার্মেনাস ও আন্তিয়খের নিকোলাসকে, যিনি ইহুদি ধর্মে ধর্মান্তরিত হয়েছিলেন।
And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Steuen a man full of fayth and of the holy Ghost, and Philippe, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas a Proselyte of Antiochia,
6 তারা এই সাতজনকে প্রেরিতশিষ্যদের কাছে উপস্থিত করল, যাঁরা প্রার্থনা করে তাঁদের উপরে হাত রাখলেন।
Which they set before the Apostles: and they prayed, and layed their hands on them.
7 এভাবে ঈশ্বরের বাক্য ছড়িয়ে পড়ল। জেরুশালেমে শিষ্যদের সংখ্যা দ্রুত বৃদ্ধি পেল এবং বহুসংখ্যক যাজক বিশ্বাসের প্রতি বাধ্য হলেন।
And the worde of God increased, and the nomber of the disciples was multipled in Hierusalem greatly, and a great company of the Priests were obedient to the faith.
8 এরপর স্তিফান, যিনি ঈশ্বরের অনুগ্রহ ও শক্তিতে পূর্ণ ছিলেন, তিনি জনসাধারণের মধ্যে অত্যন্ত বিস্ময়কর ও অলৌকিক চিহ্নকাজ সাধন করতে লাগলেন।
Now Steuen full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people.
9 এতে মুক্ত-মানুষদের (যেমন বলা হত) সমাজভবনের সদস্যরা প্রতিবাদ করল। এরা ছিল, কুরীণ ও আলেকজান্দ্রিয়া এবং সেই সঙ্গে কিলিকিয়া ও এশিয়া প্রদেশের ইহুদিরা। এই লোকেরা স্তিফানের সঙ্গে তর্ক শুরু করল।
Then there arose certaine of the Synagogue, which are called Libertines, and Cyrenians, and of Alexandria, and of them of Cilicia, and of Asia, and disputed with Steuen.
10 কিন্তু তারা তাঁর প্রজ্ঞা ও যে আত্মার শক্তিতে তিনি কথা বলছিলেন, তার বিরুদ্ধে দাঁড়াতে পারল না।
But they were not able to resist the wisdome, and the Spirit by the which he spake.
11 তখন তারা গোপনে কয়েকজন মানুষকে এই কথা বলতে প্ররোচিত করল, “আমরা স্তিফানকে মোশির বিরুদ্ধে ও ঈশ্বরের বিরুদ্ধে নিন্দার কথা বলতে শুনেছি।”
Then they suborned men, which saide, We haue heard him speake blasphemous wordes against Moses, and God.
12 এভাবে তারা জনসাধারণ, প্রাচীনবর্গ ও শাস্ত্রবিদদের উত্তেজিত করে তুলল। তারা স্তিফানকে গ্রেপ্তার করে মহাসভার সামনে উপস্থিত করল।
Thus they mooued the people and the Elders, and the Scribes: and running vpon him, caught him, and brought him to the Councill,
13 তারা মিথ্যা সাক্ষীদের দাঁড় করালো, যারা সাক্ষ্য দিল, “এই লোকটি এই পবিত্রস্থান ও বিধানের বিরুদ্ধে কথা বলতে কখনও ক্ষান্ত হয় না।
And set forth false witnesses, which sayd, This man ceasseth not to speake blasphemous wordes against this holy place, and the Law.
14 কারণ আমরা তাকে বলতে শুনেছি যে, নাসরতের যীশু এই স্থান ধ্বংস করবে ও মোশি আমাদের কাছে যেসব রীতিনীতি সমর্পণ করেছেন—সেগুলির পরিবর্তন করবে।”
For we haue heard him say, that this Iesus of Nazareth shall destroy this place, and shall change the ordinances, which Moses gaue vs.
15 যারা মহাসভায় বসেছিল, তারা স্তিফানের প্রতি একদৃষ্টে চেয়ে দেখল, তাঁর মুখমণ্ডল স্বর্গদূতের মুখমণ্ডলের মতো।
And as all that sate in the Councill, looked stedfastly on him, they saw his face as it had bene the face of an Angel.
