1 “হে ভাইয়েরা ও পিতৃতুল্য ব্যক্তিরা, আমার আত্মপক্ষ সমর্থনের কথা এখন আপনারা শুনুন।”

"Brothers and fathers, listen to the defense which I now make in your presence."

2 পৌলকে হিব্রু ভাষায় কথা বলতে শুনে তারা আরও শান্ত হয়ে গেল। তখন পৌল বললেন,

When they heard him speaking in Hebrew they became the more quiet.

3 “আমি একজন ইহুদি, কিলিকিয়ার তার্ষ নগরে আমার জন্ম, কিন্তু এই নগরে বড়ো হয়েছি। গমলীয়েলের অধীনে আমি আমাদের পিতৃপুরুষদের বিধান সম্পর্কে পুঙ্খানুপুঙ্খ শিক্ষা লাভ করেছি। আজ আপনারা যেমন, একদিন আমিও আপনাদেরই একজনের মতো ঈশ্বরের পক্ষে উদ্যমী ছিলাম।

"I am a Jew," he said, "born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, taught according to the strict manner of the Law of our forefathers, ardent for God, even as you all are this day.

4 আমি এই পথের অনুসারীদের অত্যাচার করে অনেককে হত্যা করেছি, নারী ও পুরুষ সবাইকে গ্রেপ্তার করে কারাগারে বন্দি করেছি।

"I persecuted to the death this way, continually binding and delivering up to prisons both men and women.

5 এ বিষয়ে মহাযাজক ও সমস্ত বিচার পরিষদ আমার সাক্ষী। এমনকি আমি তাদের কাছ থেকে কয়েকটি পত্র নিয়ে তাদের ইহুদি ভাইদের কাছে দামাস্কাসে যাচ্ছিলাম, যেন এই সমস্ত লোককে গ্রেপ্তার করে জেরুশালেমে নিয়ে এসে শাস্তি দেওয়ার ব্যবস্থা করি।

"To this the high priest and all the council of elders are witnesses. It was from them that I received letters to the brothers in Damascus, and I was already on my way to bring those also who were there back to Jerusalem, in bonds, for punishment.

6 “প্রায় দুপুরবেলায়, যেই আমি দামাস্কাসের কাছে পৌঁছালাম, হঠাৎই আকাশ থেকে একটি উজ্জ্বল আলো আমার চারপাশে ঝলসে উঠল।

"But when, on my journey, I was nearing Damascus, about noon, suddenly a great light from heaven shone round about me.

7 আমি মাটিতে পড়ে গেলাম ও একটি কণ্ঠস্বর শুনতে পেলাম, আমাকে বলছে, ‘শৌল, শৌল, তুমি কেন আমাকে নির্যাতন করছ?’

"I fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to me, "‘Saul! Saul! why are you persecuting me?’

8 “‘প্রভু, আপনি কে?’ আমি জিজ্ঞাসা করলাম। “‘আমি নাসরতীয় যীশু, যাঁকে তুমি নির্যাতন করছ।’ তিনি উত্তর দিলেন।

"‘Who are you, Lord?’ I asked. "‘I am Jesus, the Nazarene, whom you are persecuting,’ he answered me.

9 আমার সঙ্গীরা সেই আলো দেখতে পেল, কিন্তু যিনি আমার উদ্দেশে কথা বলছিলেন, তারা তাঁর সেই কণ্ঠস্বর বুঝতে পারল না।

"Now my companions, though they beheld the light, did not hear the words of Him who spoke to me.

10 “‘প্রভু, আমি কী করব?’ আমি জিজ্ঞাসা করলাম। “‘উঠে পড়ো,’ প্রভু বললেন, ‘ও দামাস্কাসে প্রবেশ করো। তোমাকে কী করতে হবে, সেখানে তোমাকে বলে দেওয়া হবে।’

"And I said, ‘What shall I do, Lord?’ and the Lord said to me, ‘Rise and go into Damascus, and there you will be told about all that you are destined to do.’

11 আমার সঙ্গীরা হাত ধরে আমাকে দামাস্কাসে নিয়ে গেল, কারণ সেই আলোর তীব্র ঔজ্জ্বল্য আমাকে দৃষ্টিহীন করে দিয়েছিল।

"And as I was seeing nothing for the glory of the light, I was led by the hand of my companions, and so came into Damascus.

12 “এরপর অননিয় নামে একজন ব্যক্তি আমার সঙ্গে সাক্ষাৎ করতে এলেন। তিনি নিষ্ঠার সঙ্গে বিধান পালন করতেন এবং সেখানকার অধিবাসী সব ইহুদির কাছে অত্যন্ত শ্রদ্ধার পাত্র ছিলেন।

"And a certain Ananias, a pious man according to the Law, well thought of by all the Jews who lived there,

13 তিনি আমার পাশে দাঁড়িয়ে বললেন, ‘ভাই শৌল, তুমি দৃষ্টিশক্তি লাভ করো!’ আর সেই মুহূর্তে আমি তাঁকে দেখতে পেলাম।

"came to me, and standing by me, said to me, "‘Brother Saul, receive your sight’ "In that very hour I regained my sight and looked up at him.

14 “তখন তিনি বললেন, ‘আমাদের পিতৃপুরুষদের ঈশ্বর তোমাকে মনোনীত করেছেন, যেন তুমি তাঁর ইচ্ছা জানতে পারো ও সেই ধর্মময় ব্যক্তির দর্শন লাভ করো এবং তাঁর মুখের বাণী শুনতে পাও।

"Then he said. "‘The God of our forefathers has appointed you to know his will; and to see the righteous One, and to hear a voice from his mouth.

15 তুমি যা দেখেছ বা শুনেছ, সব মানুষের কাছে সেইসব বিষয়ে তাঁর সাক্ষী হবে।

"‘For before the face of all men you will be a witness for him of what you have seen and heard.

16 আর এখন তুমি কীসের প্রতীক্ষা করছ? ওঠো, বাপ্তিষ্ম গ্রহণ করো ও তাঁর নামে আহ্বান করে তোমার সব পাপ ধুয়ে ফেলো।’

"‘And now why do you wait? Rise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling upon his name.’

17 “জেরুশালেমে ফিরে এসে আমি যখন মন্দিরে প্রার্থনা করছিলাম, আমি ভাবাবিষ্ট হলাম।

"After my return to Jerusalem, and while I was praying in the temple,

18 আমি দেখলাম, প্রভু কথা বলছেন, ‘তাড়াতাড়ি করো!’ তিনি আমাকে বললেন, ‘এই মুহূর্তে জেরুশালেম ছেড়ে চলে যাও, কারণ তারা আমার বিষয়ে তোমার সাক্ষ্য গ্রাহ্য করবে না।’

"I fell into a trance and saw him saying to me, "‘Make haste and go quickly out of Jerusalem, because they will not receive your testimony concerning me.’

19 “আমি উত্তর দিলাম, ‘প্রভু, এই লোকেরা জানে, যারা তোমাকে বিশ্বাস করে তাদের মারধোর ও বন্দি করার জন্য আমি এক সমাজভবন থেকে অন্য সমাজভবনে গিয়েছি।

"‘Lord,’ I replied, ‘they themselves well know that I was beating and imprisoning in synagogue after synagogue those who believed in you,

20 আর তোমার শহিদ স্তিফানের যখন রক্তপাত করা হয়, আমি সেখানে দাঁড়িয়ে আমার সমর্থন দিচ্ছিলাম ও যারা তাঁকে হত্যা করছিল, তাদের পোশাক পাহারা দিচ্ছিলাম।’

"‘and when the blood of your martyr Stephen was shed, I also was standing by and consenting, and holding the garments of his murders.’

21 “তারপর প্রভু আমাকে বললেন, ‘যাও, আমি তোমাকে বহুদূরে, অইহুদিদের কাছে পাঠাব।’”

"‘Depart,’ he said to me, ‘for I will send you forth, far hence, to the Gentiles.’"

22 লোকেরা এই পর্যন্ত পৌলের কথা শুনল। তারপর তারা চিৎকার করতে লাগল, “ওকে পৃথিবী থেকে দূর করো! ও বেঁচে থাকার যোগ্য নয়!”

Until they heard this last statement, the people were listening to Paul, but now they roared out. "Away with such a fellow from the earth! He is not fit to live!"

23 তারা যখন চিৎকার করে তাদের পোশাক খুলে ফেলছিল ও বাতাসে ধুলো ছড়াতে শুরু করেছিল,

When they continued to shout, throwing their clothes into the air, and flinging dust around,

24 তখন সেনাপতি পৌলকে সেনানিবাসে নিয়ে যাওয়ার আদেশ দিলেন। তিনি নির্দেশ দিলেন যেন তাঁকে চাবুক মারা হয় এবং প্রশ্ন করে যেন জানতে পারা যায় কেন তাঁর বিরুদ্ধে লোকেরা এরকম চিৎকার করছে।

the tribune ordered him to be brought into the barracks, and examined under the lash, to learn for what reason the people were thus crying out against him.

25 তারা তাঁকে টান-টান করে বেঁধে চাবুক মারতে উদ্যত হলে, সেখানে দাঁড়িয়ে থাকা শত-সেনাপতিকে পৌল বললেন, “যার অপরাধ সাব্যস্ত হয়নি, এমন কোনও রোমীয় নাগরিককে চাবুক মারা কি আপনাদের পক্ষে আইনসংগত?”

But when they had tied him up with the thongs, Paul said to the centurion who was standing near, "If a man is a Roman citizen, and uncondemned, is it lawful for you to scourge him?"

26 শত-সেনাপতি একথা শুনে সেনানায়কের কাছে গেলেন ও এই সংবাদ দিলেন। তিনি বললেন, “আপনি কী করতে চলেছেন? এই ব্যক্তি তো একজন রোমীয় নাগরিক!”

When the centurion heard that, he went to the tribune and said to him. "What are you intending to do? This man is a Roman citizen."

27 সেনানায়ক পৌলের কাছে গিয়ে জিজ্ঞাসা করলেন, “আমাকে বলো, তুমি কি একজন রোমীয় নাগরিক?” তিনি উত্তর দিলেন, “হ্যাঁ, আমি তাই।”

So the tribune came to Paul and asked him, "Tell me, are you a Roman citizen?" "Yes," he said.

28 তখন সেনানায়ক তাঁকে বললেন, “আমার নাগরিকত্ব লাভের জন্য আমাকে অনেক টাকা খরচ করতে হয়েছে।” পৌল উত্তর দিলেন, “কিন্তু আমি জন্মসূত্রেই নাগরিক।”

"I paid a large sum to get this citizenship," said the tribune. "But I was citizen-born," said Paul.

29 যারা তাঁকে জিজ্ঞাসাবাদ করার জন্য প্রস্তুত হয়েছিল, তারা তক্ষুনি পিছিয়ে গেল। সেনানায়ক যখন উপলব্ধি করলেন যে, যাঁকে তিনি শিকলে বন্দি করেছেন, সেই পৌল একজন রোমীয় নাগরিক, তিনি নিজেই আতঙ্কিত হলেন।

Then those who were about to scourge him, immediately left him. And the tribune too, was afraid, when he learned that Paul was a Roman citizen, for he had had him bound.

30 পরদিন, সেনানায়ক অনুসন্ধান করতে চাইলেন, পৌলের বিরুদ্ধে ইহুদিদের সুনির্দিষ্ট কী অভিযোগ আছে। তিনি তাঁকে মুক্ত করলেন ও প্রধান যাজকদের এবং মহাসভার সমস্ত সদস্যকে একত্র হওয়ার আদেশ দিলেন। তারপর তিনি পৌলকে এনে তাঁদের সামনে দাঁড় করালেন।

The next day, as he wished to learn the real reason why the Jews accused Paul, he unbound him, and commanded the chief priests and all the Sanhedrin to come together, and brought Paul down, and placed him before them.
