বংশাবলির দ্বিতীয় খণ্ড 32

1 নিষ্ঠাসহকারে হিষ্কিয় এত কিছু করার পর, আসিরিয়ার রাজা সন্‌হেরীব এসে যিহূদায় সশস্ত্র আক্রমণ চালিয়েছিলেন। সুরক্ষিত নগরগুলি নিজের অধিকারে আনার ভাবনাচিন্তা নিয়ে তিনি সেগুলি ঘেরাও করলেন।

After these things and this faithfulness, Sennacherib king of Assyria came and entered into Judah, and encamped against the fortified cities, and thought to break into them.

2 হিষ্কিয় যখন দেখেছিলেন যে সন্‌হেরীব এসে জেরুশালেমের বিরুদ্ধে যুদ্ধ করতে চাইছেন,

And when Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib was come, and that he was minded to fight against Jerusalem,

3 তখন নগরের বাইরে থাকা জলের উৎসগুলি থেকে আসা জলের স্রোত বন্ধ করে দেওয়ার বিষয়ে তিনি তাঁর কর্মকর্তা ও সামরিক কর্মচারীদের সাথে আলোচনা করলেন, এবং তারা তাঁকে সাহায্য করলেন।

he took counsel with his princes and his mighty men to stop the fountains of waters that were outside the city; and they helped him.

4 তারা এমন অনেক লোক একত্রিত করলেন, যারা দেশে বয়ে যাওয়া নদীনালার জলস্রোত বন্ধ করে দিয়েছিল। “আসিরিয়ার রাজারা এসে কেন প্রচুর জল পাবে?” তারা বলল।

And there was gathered together much people, and they stopped all the fountains, and the torrent that flows through the midst of the land, saying, Why should the kings of Assyria come and find much water?

5 পরে তিনি পরিশ্রম করে প্রাচীরের ভাঙা অংশগুলি মেরামত করলেন ও সেটির উপর মিনার গড়ে দিলেন। সেই প্রাচীরটির বাইরের দিকেও তিনি আরও একটি প্রাচীর তৈরি করলেন এবং দাউদ-নগরের উঁচু চাতালগুলিও আরও মজবুত করে দিলেন। তিনি প্রচুর পরিমাণে অস্ত্রশস্ত্র ও ঢালও বানিয়েছিলেন।

And he strengthened himself, and built up all the wall that was broken down, and raised it up to the towers, and [built] another wall outside, and fortified the Millo of the city of David, and made darts and shields in abundance.

6 প্রজাদের উপর তিনি সেনাপতিদের নিযুক্ত করে দিলেন এবং নগরের সিংহদুয়ারের সামনের চকে তাদের একত্রিত করে এই কথা বলে তাদের উৎসাহ দিলেন:

And he set captains of war over the people, and assembled them to him on the open place at the gate of the city, and spoke consolingly to them saying,

7 “তোমরা বলবান ও সাহসী হও। আসিরিয়ার রাজাকে ও তাঁর সাথে থাকা বিশাল সৈন্যদল দেখে তোমরা ভয় পেয়ো না বা হতাশ হোয়ো না, কারণ তাঁর সাথে যে বা যারা আছে, তাদের তুলনায় আমাদের সাথে যিনি আছেন, তাঁর ক্ষমতা অনেক বেশি।

Be strong and courageous, be not afraid nor dismayed for the king of Assyria, nor for all the multitude that is with him; for there are more with us than with him:

8 তাঁর সাথে আছে শুধু মানুষের হাত, কিন্তু আমাদের সাথে আছেন আমাদের সেই ঈশ্বর সদাপ্রভু, যিনি আমাদের সাহায্য করতে ও আমাদের হয়ে যুদ্ধ করতেও সক্ষম।” যিহূদার রাজা হিষ্কিয় প্রজাদের যে কথা বললেন, তা শুনে তারা ভরসা পেয়েছিল।

with him is an arm of flesh, but with us is Jehovah our God to help us and to fight our battles. And the people depended upon the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.

9 পরে, আসিরিয়ার রাজা সন্‌হেরীব ও তাঁর সব সৈন্যসামন্ত যখন লাখীশ অবরোধ করে বসেছিলেন, তখন সেখান থেকে তিনি যিহূদার রাজা হিষ্কিয়ের ও জেরুশালেমে উপস্থিত যিহূদার সব প্রজার কাছে এই খবর দিয়ে তাঁর কর্মকর্তাদের জেরুশালেমে পাঠালেন:

After this, Sennacherib king of Assyria sent his servants to Jerusalem (but he himself was before Lachish, and all his power with him), unto Hezekiah king of Judah, and unto all Judah that were at Jerusalem, saying,

10 “আসিরিয়ার রাজা সন্‌হেরীব একথাই বলেন: তোমরা কীসের উপর ভরসা করে জেরুশালেমে অবরুদ্ধ হয়ে বসে আছ?

Thus says Sennacherib king of Assyria: On what do ye rely that ye abide in the siege in Jerusalem?

11 হিষ্কিয় যখন বলছে, ‘আমাদের ঈশ্বর সদাপ্রভুই আসিরিয়ার রাজার হাত থেকে আমাদের উদ্ধার করবেন,’ তখন আসলে সে তোমাদের বিভ্রান্ত করছে, যেন তোমরা ক্ষুধাতৃষ্ণায় মারা যাও।

Does not Hezekiah persuade you, to give yourselves over to die by famine and by thirst, saying, Jehovah our God will deliver us out of the hand of the king of Assyria?

12 এই হিষ্কিয়ই কি নিজে এই দেবতার পূজার্চনার উঁচু উঁচু স্থান ও বেদিগুলি যিহূদা ও জেরুশালেমের লোকজনের কাছে এই কথা বলে দূর করে দেয়নি যে, ‘একটিই যজ্ঞবেদির সামনে তোমাদের আরাধনা করতে হবে ও সেটির উপরেই নৈবেদ্য উৎসর্গ করতে হবে’?

Has not the same Hezekiah removed his high places and his altars, and commanded Judah and Jerusalem saying, Ye shall worship before one altar, and burn incense upon it?

13 “তোমরা কি জানো না, আমি ও আমার পূর্বসূরিরা অন্যান্য দেশের সব প্রজার প্রতি কী করেছি? সেইসব দেশের দেবতারা কি আমার হাত থেকে তাদের দেশগুলি রক্ষা করতে পেরেছিল?

Do ye not know what I and my fathers have done to all the peoples of the countries? Were the gods of the nations of the countries in any wise able to deliver their country out of my hand?

14 আমার পূর্বসূরিরা যেসব দেশ ধ্বংস করে দিলেন, সেইসব দেশের দেবতাদের মধ্যে কে তার প্রজাদের আমার হাত থেকে রক্ষা করতে পেরেছিল? তবে তোমাদের দেবতাই বা কীভাবে আমার হাত থেকে তোমাদের রক্ষা করবে?

Who is there among all the gods of those nations that my fathers have utterly destroyed, that was able to deliver his people out of my hand, that your God should be able to deliver you out of my hand?

15 এখন হিষ্কিয় যেন এভাবে তোমাদের ঠকাতে ও বিভ্রান্ত করতে না পারে। তাকে বিশ্বাস কোরো না, কারণ কোনও দেশের বা রাজ্যের কোনও দেবতা তার প্রজাদের আমার হাত থেকে বা আমার পূর্বসূরীদের হাত থেকে রক্ষা করতে পারেনি। তবে তোমাদের দেবতাই বা কীভাবে আমার হাত থেকে তোমাদের রক্ষা করবে!”

And now, let not Hezekiah deceive you, nor persuade you in this manner, neither yet believe him; for no god of any nation or kingdom was able to deliver his people out of my hand, nor out of the hand of my fathers: how much less shall your God deliver you out of my hand?

16 সন্‌হেরীবের কর্মকর্তারা সদাপ্রভু ঈশ্বরের বিরুদ্ধে ও তাঁর দাস হিষ্কিয়ের বিরুদ্ধে আরও অনেক কথা বললেন।

And his servants spoke yet more against Jehovah, the [true] God, and against his servant Hezekiah.

17 রাজাও ইস্রায়েলের ঈশ্বর সদাপ্রভুকে টিটকিরি দিয়ে চিঠি লিখেছিলেন, এবং তাঁর বিরুদ্ধে এই কথা বললেন: “ঠিক যেভাবে অন্যান্য দেশের প্রজাদের দেবতারা, তাদের প্রজাদের আমার হাত থেকে বাঁচাতে পারেনি, সেভাবে হিষ্কিয়ের দেবতাও তার প্রজাদের আমার হাত থেকে বাঁচাতে পারবে না।”

And he wrote a letter to rail at Jehovah the God of Israel, and to speak against him saying, As the gods of the nations of the countries have not delivered their people out of my hand, so shall not the God of Hezekiah deliver his people out of my hand.

18 জেরুশালেম নগরটি দখল করার লক্ষ্যে প্রাচীরের উপর দাঁড়িয়ে থাকা লোকজনকে ভয় দেখিয়ে ও ভীতসন্ত্রস্ত করে দিয়ে তখন তারা হিব্রু ভাষায় চিৎকার করে কথা বলল।

And they cried with a loud voice in the Jewish [language] to the people of Jerusalem that were on the wall, to frighten them and to trouble them; that they might take the city.

19 যারা মানুষের হাতে গড়া, জগতের অন্যান্য লোকজনের সেই দেবতাদের বিষয়ে তারা যেভাবে কথা বলল, জেরুশালেমের ঈশ্বরের বিষয়েও তারা সেভাবেই কথা বলল।

And they spoke of the God of Jerusalem as of the gods of the peoples of the earth, the work of man's hand.

20 রাজা হিষ্কিয় ও আমোষের ছেলে ভাববাদী যিশাইয় এই বিষয় নিয়ে স্বর্গের দিকে তাকিয়ে জোর গলায় প্রার্থনা করলেন

And because of this, king Hezekiah and the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz prayed and cried to heaven.

21 আর সদাপ্রভু এমন এক স্বর্গদূত পাঠিয়ে দিলেন, যিনি আসিরিয়ার রাজার সৈন্যশিবিরের সব যোদ্ধা এবং সেনাপতি ও কর্মকর্তাকে নির্মূল করে দিলেন। তাই অপমানিত হয়ে তিনি নিজের দেশে ফিরে গেলেন। তিনি যখন তাঁর দেবতার মন্দিরে গেলেন, তখন তাঁর ঔরসে জন্মানো ছেলেদের মধ্যে কয়েকজন তরোয়াল দিয়ে কেটে তাঁকে মেরে ফেলেছিল।

And Jehovah sent an angel, who cut off all the mighty men of valour, and the princes and the captains in the camp of the king of Assyria. And he returned with shame of face to his own land. And when he was come into the house of his god, they that came forth of his own bowels made him fall there with the sword.

22 এইভাবে হিষ্কিয়কে ও জেরুশালেমের লোকজনকে আসিরিয়ার রাজা সন্‌হেরীবের হাত থেকে ও অন্যান্যদেরও হাত থেকে সদাপ্রভু রক্ষা করলেন। সবদিক থেকেই তিনি তাদের যত্ন নিয়েছিলেন।

And Jehovah saved Hezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem from the hand of Sennacherib the king of Assyria, and from the hand of all, and protected them on every side.

23 অনেকেই সদাপ্রভুর জন্য নৈবেদ্য ও যিহূদার রাজা হিষ্কিয়ের জন্য দামি উপহার নিয়ে জেরুশালেমে এসেছিল। তখন থেকেই সব জাতির দৃষ্টিতে তিনি খুব সম্মানের পাত্রে পরিণত হলেন।

And many brought gifts unto Jehovah to Jerusalem, and precious things to Hezekiah king of Judah; and he was thenceforth magnified in the sight of all the nations.

24 সেই সময় হিষ্কিয় অসুস্থ হয়ে মৃত্যুমুখে পতিত হলেন। তিনি সেই সদাপ্রভুর কাছে প্রার্থনা করলেন, যিনি তাঁকে উত্তর দিলেন ও তাঁকে এক অলৌকিক চিহ্নও দিলেন।

In those days Hezekiah was sick unto death, and he prayed to Jehovah; and he spoke to him and gave him a sign.

25 কিন্তু হিষ্কিয়ের অন্তর গর্বিত হল এবং তাঁকে যে করুণা দেখানো হল, তাতে তিনি ভালো সাড়া দেননি; তাই তাঁর উপর এবং যিহূদা ও জেরুশালেমের উপর সদাপ্রভু ক্রুদ্ধ হলেন।

But Hezekiah rendered not again according to the benefit [done] to him, for his heart was lifted up; and there was wrath upon him, and upon Judah and Jerusalem.

26 তখন হিষ্কিয় তাঁর অন্তরে উৎপন্ন গর্বের বিষয়ে অনুতাপ করলেন, এবং তাঁর সাথে সাথে জেরুশালেমের লোকেরাও অনুতাপ করল; তাই হিষ্কিয়ের রাজত্বকালে সদাপ্রভুর ক্রোধ তাদের উপর নেমে আসেনি।

And Hezekiah humbled himself for the pride of his heart, he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the wrath of Jehovah came not upon them in the days of Hezekiah.

27 হিষ্কিয়ের প্রচুর ধনসম্পত্তি ও সম্মান ছিল, আর তিনি তাঁর রুপো ও সোনার এবং তাঁর দামি মণিমুক্তো, মশলাপাতি, ঢাল ও সব ধরনের দামি জিনিসপত্রের জন্য কয়েকটি কোষাগার তৈরি করলেন।

And Hezekiah had very much riches and honour; and he made himself treasuries for silver, and for gold, and for precious stones, and for spices, and for shields, and for all manner of pleasant vessels;

28 এছাড়াও শস্য, নতুন দ্রাক্ষারস ও জলপাই তেল মজুত করে রাখার জন্য কয়েকটি গুদামঘর তৈরি করলেন; আর বিভিন্ন ধরনের গবাদি পশু রাখার জন্য গোশালা ও মেষের পাল রাখার জন্য খোঁয়াড়ও তৈরি করলেন।

storehouses also for the increase of corn and new wine and oil, and stalls for all manner of beasts, and [he procured] flocks for the stalls.

29 তিনি বেশ কিছু গ্রাম গড়ে তুলেছিলেন এবং নিজের জন্য তিনি প্রচুর পরিমাণে মেষ ও গরু-ছাগল সংগ্রহ করলেন, কারণ ঈশ্বরই তাঁকে এত ধনসম্পত্তি দিলেন।

And he provided for himself cities, and possessions of flocks and herds in abundance; for God gave him very much substance.

30 এই হিষ্কিয়ই গীহোন জলের উৎসের উপর দিকের মুখ বন্ধ করে দিলেন এবং জলের স্রোত দাউদ-নগরের পশ্চিমদিকে টেনে নামিয়েছিলেন। যে কোনো কাজে তিনি হাত লাগালেন, তাতেই তিনি সফল হলেন।

And he, Hezekiah, stopped the upper outlet of the waters of Gihon, and brought it straight down to the west side of the city of David. And Hezekiah prospered in all his works.

31 কিন্তু ব্যাবিলনের শাসনকর্তারা যখন প্রতিনিধিদল পাঠিয়ে তাঁর কাছে জানতে চেয়েছিলেন, দেশে ঠিক কী অলৌকিক চিহ্ন দেখা গিয়েছে, তখন আসলে ঈশ্বরই তাঁকে পরীক্ষা করে জানতে চেয়েছিলেন, তাঁর অন্তরে ঠিক কী আছে।

However in [the matter of] the ambassadors of the princes of Babylon, who sent to him to inquire of the wonder that was done in the land, God left him, to try him, that he might know all [that was] in his heart.

32 হিষ্কিয়ের রাজত্বকালের অন্যান্য সব ঘটনা এবং তাঁর নিষ্ঠামূলক কাজকর্মের বিবরণ যিহূদা ও ইস্রায়েলের রাজাদের পুস্তকের অন্তর্গত আমোষের ছেলে ভাববাদী যিশাইয়ের দর্শন-গ্রন্থে লেখা আছে।

And the rest of the acts of Hezekiah and his good deeds, behold, they are written in the vision of the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel.

33 হিষ্কিয় তাঁর পূর্বপুরুষদের সাথে চিরনিদ্রায় শায়িত হলেন এবং তাঁকে সেই পাহাড়ে কবর দেওয়া হল, যেখানে দাউদের সব বংশধরের কবর আছে। তিনি যখন মারা গেলেন, তখন সমগ্র যিহূদা দেশ ও জেরুশালেমের প্রজারা তাঁকে সম্মান জানিয়েছিল। তাঁর ছেলে মনঃশি রাজারূপে তাঁর স্থলাভিষিক্ত হলেন।

And Hezekiah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the highest place of the sepulchres of the sons of David; and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem did him honour at his death. And Manasseh his son reigned in his stead.
