1 শমূয়েল যখন বৃদ্ধ হয়ে গেলেন, তখন তিনি তাঁর ছেলেদের ইস্রায়েলের নেতারূপে নিযুক্ত করলেন।
And it cometh to pass, when Samuel [is] aged, that he maketh his sons judges over Israel.
2 তাঁর প্রথমজাত ছেলের নাম যোয়েল ও দ্বিতীয়জনের নাম অবিয়, এবং তারা বের-শেবায় সেবাকাজে লিপ্ত ছিল।
And the name of his first-born son is Joel, and the name of his second Abiah, judges in Beer-Sheba:
3 কিন্তু তাঁর ছেলেরা তাঁর পথে চলত না। তারা অসাধু উপায়ে অর্থলাভের পথে গেল এবং ঘুস নিত তথা ন্যায়বিচার বিকৃত করত।
and his sons have not walked in his ways, and turn aside after the dishonest gain, and take a bribe, and turn aside judgment.
4 তাই ইস্রায়েলের সব প্রাচীন একজোট হয়ে রামাতে শমূয়েলের কাছে এলেন।
And all the elders of Israel gather themselves together, and come in unto Samuel to Ramath,
5 তারা তাঁকে বললেন, “আপনার বয়স হয়েছে, আর আপনার ছেলেরাও আপনার পথে চলে না; এখন তাই আমাদের নেতৃত্ব দেওয়ার জন্য একজন রাজা নিযুক্ত করুন, যেমন অন্য সব জাতিরও রাজা আছে।”
and say unto him, 'Lo, thou hast become aged, and thy sons have not walked in thy ways; now, appoint to us a king, to judge us, like all the nations.'
6 “আমাদের নেতৃত্ব দেওয়ার জন্য একজন রাজা দিন,” তাদের বলা এই কথাটি কিন্তু শমূয়েলকে অসন্তুষ্ট করল; তাই তিনি সদাপ্রভুর কাছে প্রার্থনা করলেন।
And the thing is evil in the eyes of Samuel, when they have said, 'Give to us a king to judge us;' and Samuel prayeth unto Jehovah.
7 সদাপ্রভু তাঁকে বললেন: “লোকেরা তোমায় যা যা বলছে তুমি তা শুনে নাও; তারা যে তোমায় প্রত্যাখ্যান করেছে তা নয়, কিন্তু তাদের রাজারূপে তারা আমাকেই প্রত্যাখ্যান করেছে।
And Jehovah saith unto Samuel, 'Hearken to the voice of the people, to all that they say unto thee, for thee they have not rejected, but Me they have rejected, from reigning over them.
8 যেদিন আমি তাদের মিশর দেশ থেকে বের করে এনেছিলাম, সেদিন থেকে শুরু করে আজ পর্যন্ত তারা যেভাবে আমাকে ছেড়ে অন্যান্য দেবদেবীর সেবা করে এসেছে, সেরকম আচরণ তারা তোমার প্রতিও করছে।
According to all the works that they have done from the day of My bringing them up out of Egypt, even unto this day, when they forsake Me, and serve other gods — so they are doing also to thee.
9 এখন তুমি তাদের কথা শোনো; কিন্তু শপথপূর্বক তুমি তাদের সতর্ক করে দাও এবং তারা জানুক, যে রাজা তাদের উপর রাজত্ব করতে চলেছেন, তিনি তাঁর অধিকাররূপে কী দাবি জানাবেন।”
And now, hearken to their voice; only, surely thou dost certainly protest to them, and hast declared to them the custom of the king who doth reign over them.'
10 যারা শমূয়েলের কাছে একজন রাজা চেয়েছিল, তাদের তিনি সদাপ্রভুর বলা সব কথা বলে শোনালেন।
And Samuel speaketh all the words of Jehovah unto the people who are asking from him a king,
11 তিনি বললেন, “যে রাজা তোমাদের উপর রাজত্ব করবেন, তিনি তাঁর অধিকাররূপে তোমাদের কাছে এই দাবি জানাবেন: তিনি তোমাদের ছেলেদের নিয়ে তাঁর রথ ও অশ্বগুলির পরিচর্যাকাজে লাগাবেন, ও তারা তাঁর রথের সামনে সামনে দৌড়াবে।
and saith, 'This is the custom of the king who doth reign over you: Your sons he doth take, and hath appointed for himself among his chariots, and among his horsemen, and they have run before his chariots;
12 তাদের মধ্যে কয়েকজনকে তিনি সহস্র-সেনাপতি ও পঞ্চাশ-সেনাপতি পদে নিযুক্ত করবেন, এবং অন্য কয়েকজনকে তিনি তাঁর জমি চাষ করার ও ফসল কাটার কাজে লাগাবেন, এবং অন্য আরও কয়েকজনকে যুদ্ধাস্ত্র ও তাঁর রথের সাজসরঞ্জাম তৈরির কাজে লাগাবেন।
also to appoint for himself heads of thousands, and heads of fifties; also to plow his plowing, and to reap his reaping; and to make instruments of his war, and instruments of his charioteer.
13 তিনি তোমাদের মেয়েদের নিয়ে তাদের সুগন্ধি-প্রস্তুতকারিনী, রাঁধুনী ও রুটিওয়ালী করে ছাড়বেন।
'And your daughters he doth take for perfumers, and for cooks, and for bakers;
14 তিনি তোমাদের সেরা চাষযোগ্য জমি, দ্রাক্ষাক্ষেত ও জলপাই-এর বাগানগুলি কেড়ে নিয়ে, সেগুলি তাঁর পরিচারকদের হাতে তুলে দেবেন।
and your fields, and your vineyards, and your olive-yards — the best — he doth take, and hath given to his servants.
15 তিনি তোমাদের ফসলের ও মরশুমী দ্রাক্ষারসের দশমাংশ আদায় করে তা তাঁর কর্মকর্তা ও পরিচারকদের হাতে তুলে দেবেন।
And your seed and your vineyards he doth tithe, and hath given to his eunuchs, and to his servants.
16 তোমাদের দাস-দাসীদের ও সেরা পশুপাল ও গাধার পাল তিনি নিজের ব্যবহারের জন্য দখল করে নেবেন।
And your men-servants, and your maid-servants, and your young men — the best, and your asses, he doth take, and hath prepared for his own work;
17 তিনি তোমাদের পশুপালের দশমাংশ ছিনিয়ে নেবেন, ও তোমরা নিজেরাই তাঁর ক্রীতদাস-দাসীতে পরিণত হবে।
your flock he doth tithe, and ye are to him for servants.
18 এমন একদিন আসতে চলেছে, যেদিন তোমরা তোমাদেরই মনোনীত রাজার হাত থেকে নিস্তার পাওয়ার জন্য আর্তনাদ করবে, কিন্তু সেদিন সদাপ্রভু তোমাদের কোনও উত্তর দেবেন না।”
And ye have cried out in that day because of the king whom ye have chosen for yourselves, and Jehovah doth not answer you in that day.'
19 কিন্তু লোকেরা শমূয়েলের কথা শুনতেই চায়নি। তারা বলল, “আরে ধুর! আমরা একজন রাজা চাই।
And the people refuse to hearken to the voice of Samuel, and say, 'Nay, but a king is over us,
20 তবেই তো আমরা অন্য সব জাতির মতো হতে পারব, একজন রাজা আমাদের উপর রাজত্ব করবেন এবং তিনিই আমাদের অগ্রগামী হবেন ও আমাদের হয়ে যুদ্ধও করবেন।”
and we have been, even we, like all the nations; and our king hath judged us, and gone out before us, and fought our battles.'
21 শমূয়েল লোকদের সব কথা শোনার পর তিনি সদাপ্রভুর কাছে আবার তা বলে শোনালেন।
And Samuel heareth all the words of the people, and speaketh them in the ears of Jehovah;
22 সদাপ্রভু উত্তর দিলেন, “তাদের কথা শোনো ও তাদের জন্য একজন রাজা ঠিক করে দাও।” পরে শমূয়েল ইস্রায়েলীদের বললেন, “তোমরা প্রত্যেকে নিজের নিজের নগরে ফিরে যাও।”
and Jehovah saith unto Samuel, 'Hearken to their voice, and thou hast caused to reign over them a king.' And Samuel saith unto the men of Israel, 'Go ye each to his city.'
