1 দাউদ মনে মনে ভেবেছিলেন, “একদিন না একদিন আমাকে শৌলের হাতে মরতেই হবে। আমার পক্ষে ফিলিস্তিনীদের দেশে পালিয়ে যাওয়াই ভালো। তখন শৌল ইস্রায়েলে আর কোথাও আমার খোঁজ করবেন না, ও আমি তাঁর হাত এড়িয়ে পালিয়ে যেতে পারব।”
And David said in his heart, Now shall I be one day delivered [for death] into the hands of Saul; and there is no good thing for me unless I should escape into the land of the Philistines, and Saul should cease from seeking me through every coast of Israel: so I shall escape out of his hand.
2 অতএব দাউদ ও তাঁর সঙ্গে থাকা 600 জন লোক দেশ ছেড়ে মায়োকের ছেলে গাতের রাজা আখীশের কাছে পৌঁছে গেলেন।
So David arose, and the six hundred men that were with him, and he went to Anchus, son Ammach, king of Geth.
3 দাউদ ও তাঁর লোকজন গাতে আখীশের কাছেই থেকে গেলেন। প্রত্যেকে তাদের পরিবার সমেতই সেখানে ছিল, এবং দাউদের সঙ্গে ছিলেন তাঁর দুই স্ত্রী: যিষ্রিয়েলীয়া অহীনোয়ম ও নাবলের বিধবা কর্মিলীয়া অবীগল।
And David lived with Anchus, he and his men, each with his family; and David and both his wives, Achinaam, the Jezraelitess, and Abigaia the wife of Nabal the Carmelite.
4 শৌলকে যখন বলা হল দাউদ গাতে পালিয়ে গিয়েছেন, তখন তিনি আর তাঁর খোঁজ করেননি।
And it was told Saul that David had fled to Geth; and he no longer sought after him.
5 তখন দাউদ আখীশকে বললেন, “আমি যদি আপনার দৃষ্টিতে অনুগ্রহ পেয়েছি, তবে আমার থাকার জন্য যেন পল্লি-অঞ্চলে একটি স্থান নির্দিষ্ট করে দেওয়া হয়। আপনার দাস কেন আপনার সঙ্গে রাজধানী নগরে বসবাস করবে?”
And David said to Anchus, If now your servant has found grace in your eyes, let them give me, I pray you, a place in one of the cities in the country, and I will dwell there: for why does your servant dwell with you in a royal city?
6 অতএব সেদিন আখীশ তাঁকে সিক্লগ নগরটি দান করে দিলেন, ও সেদিন থেকেই সেটি যিহূদার রাজাদের অধিকারে চলে গেল।
And he gave him Sekelac in that day: therefore Sekelac came into possession of the king of Judea to this day.
7 দাউদ ফিলিস্তিনী এলাকায় এক বছর চার মাস ধরে বসবাস করলেন।
And the number of the days that David lived in the country of the Philistines was four months.
8 ইতিমধ্যে দাউদ ও তাঁর লোকজন গিয়ে গশূরীয়, গির্ষীয় ও অমালেকীয়দের উপরে অতর্কিত আক্রমণ শানিয়েছিলেন। (প্রাচীনকাল থেকেই এইসব লোকজন শূর ও মিশর পর্যন্ত বিস্তৃত এলাকায় বসবাস করত)
And David and his men went up, and made an attack on all the Gesirites and on the Amalekites: and behold, the land was inhabited, (even the land from Gelampsur) by those who come from the fortified [cities] even to the land of Egypt.
9 যখনই দাউদ কোনো এলাকা আক্রমণ করতেন, তিনি সেখানে একটিও পুরুষ বা স্ত্রীলোককে জীবিত ছাড়তেন না, কিন্তু মেষ ও গবাদি পশু, গাধা ও উট, এবং পোশাক-পরিচ্ছদ লুট করতেন। পরে তিনি আখীশের কাছে ফিরে আসতেন।
And he struck the land, and saved neither man nor woman alive; and they took flocks, and herds, and asses, and camels, and raiment; and they returned and came to Anchus.
10 আখীশ যখন জিজ্ঞাসা করতেন, “আজ তুমি কোথায় অতর্কিত আক্রমণ শানাতে গেলে?” দাউদ তখন উত্তর দিতেন, “যিহূদার নেগেভে” অথবা “যিরহমেলীয়দের নেগেভে” বা “কেনীয়দের নেগেভে।”
And Anchus said to David, On whom have you made an attack today? And David said to Anchus, On the south of Judea, and on the south of Jesmega, and on the south of the Kenezite.
11 গাতে নিয়ে আসার জন্য তিনি কোনো পুরুষ বা স্ত্রীলোককে জীবিত রাখতেন না, কারণ তিনি ভাবতেন, “এরা হয়তো আমাদের বিষয়ে বলে দেবে, ‘দাউদ এ ধরনের কাজ করেছেন।’” আর যতদিন তিনি ফিলিস্তিনী এলাকায় বসবাস করলেন, ততদিন তিনি এরকমই করে গেলেন।
And I have not saved man or woman alive to bring them to Geth, saying, Lest they carry a report to Geth against us, saying, These things David does. And this was his manner all the days that David lived in the country of the Philistines.
12 আখীশ দাউদকে বিশ্বাস করতেন ও মনে মনে বলতেন, “সে তার নিজের জাতি ইস্রায়েলের কাছে নিজেকে আপত্তিকর করে তুলেছে, তাই সারা জীবন সে আমার দাস হয়েই থাকবে।”
So David had the full confidence of Anchus, who said, He is thoroughly disgraced among his people in Israel and he shall be my servant for ever.
