1 শমূয়েল শৌলকে বললেন, “সদাপ্রভু তাঁর প্রজা ইস্রায়েলের উপর তোমাকে রাজপদে অভিষিক্ত করার জন্য আমাকেই পাঠিয়েছিলেন; তাই এখন তুমি সদাপ্রভুর বাণীটি শোনো।
Samuel told Saul, “The Lord sent me to anoint you king of his people Israel. So now pay attention to what the Lord has to say.
2 সর্বশক্তিমান সদাপ্রভু একথাই বলেন: ‘ইস্রায়েল যখন মিশর থেকে বের হয়ে এসেছিল তখন অমালেকীয়রা তাদের উপর লুটপাট চালাবার জন্য ওৎ পেতে বসে থেকে যা যা করেছিল সেজন্য আমি তাদের শাস্তি দেব।
This is what the Lord Almighty says: I observed what the Amalekites did to Israel when they ambushed them on their way from Egypt.
3 এখন যাও, অমালেকীয়দের আক্রমণ করো এবং তাদের যা যা আছে, সব পুরোপুরি ধ্বংস করে দাও। তাদের নিষ্কৃতি দিয়ো না; স্ত্রী-পুরুষ, সন্তানসন্ততি ও শিশু, গবাদি পশু ও মেষ, উট ও গাধাগুলি মেরে ফেলো।’”
Go and attack the Amalekites and exterminate all of them. Don't spare anyone, but kill every man, woman, child, and baby; every ox, sheep, camel, and donkey.”
4 শৌল তখন লোকজনকে ডেকে পাঠিয়ে টলায়ীমে তাদের গণনা করার জন্য একত্রিত করলেন, 2,00,000 পদাতিক সৈন্য ও যিহূদা থেকে 10,000 জন সংগৃহীত হল।
Saul called up his army at Telem. There were 200,000 Israelite infantry and 10,000 men from Judah.
5 শৌল সৈন্যসামন্ত নিয়ে অমালেকীয়দের নগরে গিয়ে সরু গিরিখাতের মধ্যে ওৎ পেতে বসেছিলেন।
Saul advanced on the town of Amalek and set up an ambush in the valley.
6 পরে তিনি কেনীয়দের বললেন, “তোমরা সরে যাও, অমালেকীয়দের সঙ্গ ত্যাগ করো, যেন তাদের সঙ্গে সঙ্গে আমি তোমাদেরও ধ্বংস করে না ফেলি; কারণ ইস্রায়েলীরা যখন মিশর থেকে বের হয়ে এসেছিল, তোমরা তাদের প্রতি দয়া দেখিয়েছিলে।” তাই কেনীয়েরা অমালেকীয়দের কাছ থেকে দূরে সরে গেল।
Saul sent a message to warn the Kenites, “Move out of the area and leave the Amalekites so that I don't destroy you with them, because you showed kindness to all the people of Israel on their way from Egypt.” So the Kenites moved away and left the Amalekites.
7 পরে শৌল হবীলা থেকে মিশরের পূর্ব-সীমানার কাছাকাছি অবস্থিত শূর পর্যন্ত অমালেকীয়দের আক্রমণ করে গেলেন।
Saul defeated the Amalekites from Havilah as far as Shur, to the east of Egypt.
8 তিনি অমালেকীয়দের রাজা অগাগকে জীবিত অবস্থায় ধরে রেখে তার সব লোকজনকে তরোয়াল দিয়ে ধ্বংস করে ফেললেন।
He captured Agag, king of Amalek, alive, but exterminated all the people by the sword.
9 কিন্তু শৌল ও তাঁর সৈন্যরা অগাগকে ও ভালো ভালো মেষ ও গবাদি পশুপাল, হৃষ্টপুষ্ট বাছুর ও মেষশাবকদের—যা যা ভালো বলে মনে হল, সেসব বাঁচিয়ে রেখেছিলেন। সেগুলি তাঁরা পুরোপুরি ধ্বংস করতে চাননি, কিন্তু যা যা তুচ্ছ ও দুর্বল ছিল, সেগুলিই তাঁরা পুরোপুরি ধ্বংস করে ফেলেছিলেন।
Saul and his army spared Agag, together with the best sheep and cattle, the fat calves and lambs, and everything else that was any good. They didn't want to destroy those, but they completely destroyed all that was unwanted and worthless.
10 তখন সদাপ্রভুর এই বাক্য শমূয়েলের কাছে এসেছিল:
The Lord sent a message to Samuel, saying,
11 “আমি শৌলকে রাজা করেছি বলে আমার আক্ষেপ হচ্ছে, কারণ সে আমার কাছ থেকে সরে গিয়েছে এবং আমার নির্দেশ পালন করেনি।” শমূয়েল ক্রুদ্ধ হলেন, এবং সারারাত সেদিন তিনি সদাপ্রভুর কাছে কান্নাকাটি করলেন।
“I'm sorry I made Saul king, for he has given up following me and hasn't done as I ordered.” Samuel was upset, and he cried out to the Lord all through the night.
12 পরদিন ভোরবেলায় শমূয়েল উঠে শৌলের সঙ্গে দেখা করতে গেলেন, কিন্তু তাঁকে বলা হল, “শৌল কর্মিলে গিয়েছেন। সেখানে তিনি নিজের সম্মানার্থে একটি স্মৃতিসৌধ প্রতিষ্ঠা করার পর গিল্গলে নেমে গিয়েছেন।”
Samuel got up early in the morning and went to meet Saul, but he was told, “Saul's gone to Carmel. There he's even erected a monument to honor himself, and now he's left and gone down to Gilgal.”
13 শমূয়েল শৌলের কাছে গিয়ে পৌঁছালে শৌল বললেন, “সদাপ্রভু আপনাকে আশীর্বাদ করুন! আমি সদাপ্রভুর নির্দেশ পালন করেছি।”
When Samuel caught up with him, Saul said, “The Lord bless you! I have done what the Lord ordered.”
14 কিন্তু শমূয়েল বললেন, “তবে আমার কানে কেন মেষের ডাক ভেসে আসছে? আমি কেন তবে গবাদি পশুর ডাক শুনতে পাচ্ছি?”
“So what's this bleating of sheep my ears are picking up? What's this lowing of cattle that I'm hearing?” Samuel asked.
15 শৌল উত্তর দিলেন, “সৈন্যরা এগুলি অমালেকীয়দের কাছ থেকে নিয়ে এসেছে; আপনার ঈশ্বর সদাপ্রভুর উদ্দেশে বলি দেওয়ার জন্য তারা ভালো ভালো মেষ ও গবাদি পশু বাঁচিয়ে রেখেছে, কিন্তু বাদবাকি সবকিছু আমরা পুরোপুরি ধ্বংস করে ফেলেছি।”
“The army brought them from the Amalekites,” Saul replied. “They spared the best sheep and cattle to sacrifice to the Lord your God, but we completely destroyed the rest.”
16 “যথেষ্ট হয়েছে!” শমূয়েল শৌলকে বললেন। “গতরাতে সদাপ্রভু আমাকে যা বলেছিলেন, তা আমায় বলতে দাও।” “আমায় বলুন,” শৌল উত্তর দিলেন।
“Oh, be quiet!” Samuel told Saul. “Let me tell you what the Lord told me last night.” “Tell me what he said,” Saul replied.
17 শমূয়েল বললেন, “যদিও এক সময় তুমি নিজের দৃষ্টিতেই ক্ষুদ্র ছিলে, তাও কি তুমি ইস্রায়েলের সব গোষ্ঠীর প্রধান হওনি? সদাপ্রভু তোমাকে ইস্রায়েলের উপর রাজপদে অভিষিক্ত করেছেন।
“Once you didn't use to think much of yourself, but haven't you become the leader of the tribes of Israel?” Samuel asked. “The Lord anointed you king of Israel.
18 তিনিই তোমাকে একটি কাজের দায়িত্ব দিয়ে পাঠিয়ে বলেছিলেন, ‘যাও ও সেই দুষ্ট জাতিকে, অমালেকীয়দের পুরোপুরি ধ্বংস করে দাও; তাদের পুরোপুরি মুছে না দেওয়া পর্যন্ত তাদের বিরুদ্ধে যুদ্ধ করেই যাও।’
Then he sent you out to do something, telling you, ‘Go and exterminate those sinners, the Amalekites. Attack them until they're all destroyed.’
19 তুমি সদাপ্রভুর বাধ্য হলে না কেন? কেন তুমি লুন্ঠিত জিনিসপত্রের উপর ঝাঁপিয়ে পড়লে ও সদাপ্রভুর দৃষ্টিতে পাপ করলে?”
Why didn't you do what the Lord ordered? Why did you swoop down on the plunder and do what was evil in the Lord's sight?”
20 “কিন্তু আমি তো সদাপ্রভুর বাধ্য হয়েছি,” শৌল শমূয়েলকে বললেন। “সদাপ্রভু আমায় যে কাজের দায়িত্ব দিয়ে পাঠিয়েছিলেন, আমি তো সে কাজেই গিয়েছিলাম। আমি অমালেকীয়দের পুরোপুরি ধ্বংস করেছি এবং তাদের রাজা অগাগকে ধরে এনেছি।
“But I did do what the Lord ordered!” Saul replied. “I went and did what the Lord sent me to do. I brought back Agag, king of Amalek, and completely destroyed the Amalekites.
21 সৈন্যরা লুন্ঠিত জিনিসপত্র থেকে কয়েকটি মেষ ও গবাদি পশু নিয়েছে, সেগুলির মধ্যে থেকে ভালো ভালো কয়েকটিকে গিল্গলে আপনার ঈশ্বর সদাপ্রভুর উদ্দেশে বলি দেওয়ার জন্য সরিয়ে রাখা হয়েছে।”
The army took sheep and cattle from the plunder, the best of what was consecrated to God, to sacrifice them to the Lord your God in Gilgal.”
22 কিন্তু শমূয়েল উত্তর দিলেন: “সদাপ্রভুর বাধ্য হলে তিনি যত খুশি হন, হোম ও বলি পেয়ে কি তিনি তত খুশি হন? বলি দেওয়ার থেকে বাধ্য হওয়া ভালো, মদ্দা মেষের চর্বির থেকে কথা শোনা ভালো।
“Does the Lord prefer burnt offerings and sacrifices, or obedience to what he says?” Samuel asked. “Listen! Obedience is better than sacrifice. Paying attention is more important than offering the fat of rams.
23 কারণ বিরুদ্ধাচরণ হল ভবিষ্যৎ-কথনের মতো পাপ, এবং ঔদ্ধত্য হল প্রতিমাপূজার মতো পাপ। যেহেতু তুমি সদাপ্রভুর বাক্য অগ্রাহ্য করেছ, তাই তিনিও তোমায় রাজারূপে অগ্রাহ্য করেছেন।”
Rebellion is as bad as witchcraft, and arrogance is as bad as the sin of idolatry. Because you have rejected the Lord's commands, he has rejected you as king.”
24 তখন শৌল শমূয়েলকে বললেন, “আমি পাপ করেছি। আমি সদাপ্রভুর আজ্ঞা ও আপনার নির্দেশ অমান্য করেছি। লোকজনকে ভয় পেয়ে আমি তাদের কথানুসারে কাজ করেছি।
“I have sinned,” Saul confessed to Samuel. “I disobeyed the Lord's orders and your instructions, because I was afraid of the people and followed what they said.
25 এখন আমি আপনাকে সনির্বন্ধ অনুরোধ জানাচ্ছি, আমার পাপ ক্ষমা করুন ও আমার সঙ্গে ফিরে চলুন, যেন আমি সদাপ্রভুর আরাধনা করতে পারি।”
So please forgive my sin and come back with me, so I can worship the Lord.”
26 কিন্তু শমূয়েল তাঁকে বললেন, “আমি তোমার সঙ্গে ফিরে যাব না। তুমি সদাপ্রভুর বাক্য অগ্রাহ্য করেছ, আর সদাপ্রভুও ইস্রায়েলের রাজারূপে তোমাকে অগ্রাহ্য করেছেন!”
But Samuel told him, “I'm not going back with you. You have rejected the Lord's orders, and the Lord has rejected you as king of Israel!”
27 শমূয়েল প্রস্থান করার জন্য ঘুরে দাঁড়াতেই শৌল শমূয়েলের আলখাল্লার আঁচল ধরে টান দিলেন, এবং সেটি ছিঁড়ে গেল।
As Samuel turned away to leave, Saul grabbed hold of the hem of his robe, and it ripped.
28 শমূয়েল তাঁকে বললেন, “সদাপ্রভু আজ ইস্রায়েলের রাজ্যটি তোমার কাছ থেকে ছিঁড়ে নিলেন এবং তোমার প্রতিবেশীদের মধ্যে একজনকে—যে তোমার চেয়ে ভালো, তাকে দিয়ে দিলেন।
Samuel said to him, “The Lord has ripped the kingdom of Israel away from you today and has given it to your neighbor—someone who is better than you!
29 যিনি ইস্রায়েলের প্রতাপ, তিনি মিথ্যা কথা বলেন না বা মন পরিবর্তন করেন না; কারণ তিনি মানুষ নন যে তাঁর মন পরিবর্তন করবেন।”
In addition, the Glory of Israel does not lie or change his mind, for he is not a human being who changes his mind!”
30 শৌল উত্তর দিলেন, “আমি পাপ করেছি। কিন্তু দয়া করে আমার প্রজাকুলের প্রাচীনদের সামনে ও ইস্রায়েলের সামনে আমার সম্মান বজায় রাখুন; আমার সঙ্গে ফিরে চলুন, যেন আমি আপনার ঈশ্বর সদাপ্রভুর আরাধনা করতে পারি।”
“Yes, I have sinned,” Saul replied. “Please honor me now before the elders of my people and before Israel—come back with me, so that I may worship the Lord your God.”
31 অতএব শমূয়েল শৌলের সঙ্গে ফিরে গেলেন, এবং শৌল সদাপ্রভুর আরাধনা করলেন।
So Samuel went back with Saul after all, and Saul worshiped the Lord.
32 পরে শমূয়েল বললেন, “অমালেকীয়দের রাজা অগাগকে আমার কাছে নিয়ে এসো।” শিকলে বাঁধা অবস্থায় অগাগ তাঁর কাছে এলেন। তিনি মনে করলেন, “মৃত্যুর তীব্রতা নিশ্চয় দূর হয়ে গিয়েছে।”
Then Samuel said, “Bring me Agag, king of the Amalekites.” Agag came to him confidently, for he thought, “The threat of death of being killed must have passed.”
33 কিন্তু শমূয়েল বললেন, “তোমার তরোয়াল যেভাবে স্ত্রীলোকদের নিঃসন্তান করেছে, তোমার মা স্ত্রীলোকদের মধ্যে তেমনই নিঃসন্তান হবে।” শমূয়েল গিল্গলে সদাপ্রভুর সামনে অগাগকে হত্যা করলেন।
But Samuel said, “In the same way that your sword has made women childless, so too your mother will be childless among women.” Samuel cut Agag to pieces before the Lord at Gilgal.
34 পরে শমূয়েল রামার উদ্দেশে রওনা হলেন, কিন্তু শৌল শৌলের গিবিয়ায় নিজের ঘরে ফিরে গেলেন।
Samuel left for Ramah, and Saul went home to Gibeah of Saul.
35 আমৃত্যু শমূয়েল আর শৌলের সঙ্গে দেখা করতে যাননি, যদিও শমূয়েল তাঁর জন্য অবশ্য কান্নাকাটি করতেন। শৌলকে ইস্রায়েলের রাজা করেছিলেন বলে সদাপ্রভুর আক্ষেপ হয়েছিল।
Until the day of his death, Samuel never visited Saul again. Samuel mourned over Saul, and the Lord regretted he had made Saul the king of Israel.
