শমূয়েলের প্রথম বই 11
1 অম্মোনীয় নাহশ যাবেশ-গিলিয়দ আক্রমণ করে নগরটি অবরুদ্ধ করলেন। যাবেশের সব মানুষজন তাঁকে বলল, “আমাদের সঙ্গে আপনি এক শান্তিচুক্তি করুন, আর আমরাও আপনার বশীভূত হয়ে থাকব।”
Then came up Nahash the Ammonite, and encamped against Jabesh-gilead, —and all the man of Jabesh said unto Nahash, Solemnise with us a covenant, that we may serve thee.
2 কিন্তু অম্মোনীয় নাহশ উত্তর দিলেন, “আমি একমাত্র এই শর্তেই তোমাদের সঙ্গে শান্তিচুক্তি করব: আমি তোমাদের প্রত্যেকের ডান চোখ উপড়ে নেব ও এরকম করার দ্বারা সমগ্র ইস্রায়েল জাতিকে কলঙ্কিত করব।”
And Nahash the Ammonite said unto them, Hereby, will I solemnise [a covenant] with you by digging out for you, every one’s right eye, —and laying it for a reproach, upon all Israel.
3 যাবেশের প্রাচীনেরা তাঁকে বললেন, “আমাদের সাত দিন সময় দিন যেন আমরা ইস্রায়েলের বিভিন্ন প্রান্তে দূত পাঠাতে পারি; যদি কেউ আমাদের রক্ষা করতে এগিয়ে না আসে, তবে আমরা আপনার হাতে নিজেদের সমর্পণ করে দেব।”
And the elders of Jabesh said unto him—Give us a respite of seven days, that we may send messengers throughout all the bounds of Israel, —and then, if there is none to save us, we will come out unto thee.
4 দূতেরা যখন শৌলের নগর গিবিয়াতে এসে লোকদের কাছে এইসব শর্তের খবর দিল, তারা সবাই চিৎকার করে কান্নাকাটি করল।
And, when the messengers came to Gibeah of Saul, and spake the words in the ears of the people, all the people lifted up their voice, and wept.
5 ঠিক সেই সময় শৌল বলদদের পিছু পিছু ক্ষেত থেকে বাড়ি ফিরছিলেন। তিনি তাদের জিজ্ঞাসা করলেন, “কী হয়েছে? এরা কাঁদছে কেন?” তখন যাবেশের লোকেরা যা যা বলল, তা তারা আরেকবার শৌলকে বলে শোনাল।
But lo! Saul, came in, following the oxen, out of the field, and Saul said, What aileth the people, that they should weep? Then were recounted to him the words of the men of Jabesh.
6 শৌল তাদের কথা শোনার পর, ঈশ্বরের আত্মা সপরাক্রমে তাঁর উপর নেমে এলেন, ও তিনি রাগে অগ্নিশর্মা হয়ে উঠলেন।
And the Spirit of God came suddenly upon Saul, when he heard these words, —and his anger raged furiously.
7 তিনি এক জোড়া বলদ নিয়ে, সেগুলি টুকরো টুকরো করে কেটে দূতদের মাধ্যমে সেই টুকরোগুলি ইস্রায়েলের বিভিন্ন প্রান্তে পাঠিয়ে দিয়ে ঘোষণা করলেন, “যদি কেউ শৌল ও শমূয়েলের অনুসরণ না করে তবে তার বলদদের প্রতিও এরকমই করা হবে।” তখন সদাপ্রভুর আতঙ্ক লোকজনের মনে বাসা বাঁধল, ও তারা একজোট হয়ে বাইরে বের হয়ে এল।
So he took a yoke of oxen, and cut them in pieces, and sent throughout all the bounds of Israel by the hand of messengers—saying, Whosoever cometh not forth after Saul, and after Samuel, so, shall it be done unto his oxen. Then felt the dread of Yahweh, upon the people, and they came forth, as one man.
8 শৌল যখন বেষকে তাদের সমবেত করলেন, তখন ইস্রায়েলের জনসংখ্যা হল 3,00,000 জন ও যিহূদার হল 30,000 জন।
And, when he numbered them in Bezek, the sons of Israel were found to be—three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand.
9 সেখানে আসা দূতদের তারা বলল, “যাবেশ-গিলিয়দের লোকদের গিয়ে তোমরা বোলো, ‘আগামীকাল সূর্য যখন মধ্য-গগনে থাকবে, তখনই তোমাদের রক্ষা করা হবে।’” দূতেরা গিয়ে যখন যাবেশের লোকদের কাছে এ খবর দিল, তারা খুব খুশি হল।
So they said unto the messengers who had come—Thus, shall ye surely say to the men of Jabesh-gilead, To-morrow, shall ye have deliverance, about the time the son is hot. And, when the messengers came and told the men of Jabesh, they rejoiced.
10 তারা অম্মোনীয়দের বলল, “আগামীকাল আমরা তোমাদের হাতে নিজেদের সমর্পণ করে দেব, আর তোমরা আমাদের প্রতি যা ইচ্ছা হয়, তাই কোরো।”
So the men of Jabesh said, To-morrow, will we come out unto you, —Then shall ye do with us, according to all that is good in your eyes.
11 পরদিন শৌল তাঁর লোকজনকে তিন দলে বিভক্ত করলেন; রাতের শেষ প্রহরে তারা অম্মোনীয়দের সৈন্যশিবিরে ঝাঁপিয়ে পড়ল ও রোদ প্রখর হওয়া পর্যন্ত তাদের উপর হত্যার তাণ্ডব চালিয়ে গেল। যারা বেঁচে গেল, তারা ছত্রভঙ্গ হয়ে পড়ল, তাতে এমন দশা হল যে তাদের মধ্যে দুজনও একসঙ্গে থাকতে পারেনি।
And it came to pass on the morrow, that Saul set the people in three companies, and they entered into the midst of the host, during the morning watch, and smote Ammon until the day was hot. And it came to pass that, they who were left, were scattered, so that there were not left among them, two together.
12 লোকজন তখন শমূয়েলকে বলল, “তারা কারা, যারা বলেছিল, ‘শৌল কি আমাদের উপর রাজত্ব করবে?’ সেইসব লোককে আমাদের হাতে তুলে দিন যেন আমরা তাদের মেরে ফেলতে পারি।”
Then said the people unto Samuel, Who is he that was saying, Shall, Saul, reign over us? Give up the men, that we may put them to death.
13 কিন্তু শৌল বললেন, “আজ আর কাউকে মারা হবে না, কারণ আজকের এই দিনেই সদাপ্রভু ইস্রায়েলকে রক্ষা করেছেন।”
But Saul said, There shall not be put to death a man, this day, —for, to-day, hath Yahweh wrought deliverance in Israel.
14 তখন শমূয়েল লোকদের বললেন, “এসো, আমরা সবাই গিল্গলে যাই ও সেখানে নতুন করে রাজপদটি প্রতিষ্ঠিত করি।”
Then said Samuel unto the people, Come and let us go to Gilgal, —and let us there renew the kingdom.
15 অতএব সব লোকজন গিল্গলে গিয়ে সদাপ্রভুর উপস্থিতিতে শৌলকে রাজা করল। সেখানে তারা সদাপ্রভুর সামনে মঙ্গলার্থক-নৈবেদ্য উৎসর্গ করল, এবং শৌল ও ইস্রায়েলের সব লোকজন এক বড়ো অনুষ্ঠান করলেন।
So all the people went to Gilgal, and made Saul king there, before Yahweh, in Gilgal, and offered there sacrifices of peace-offerings before Yahweh, —and Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced there, exceedingly.
