1 অতএব, তোমরা সমস্ত বিদ্বেষ ও সমস্ত ছলনা, ভণ্ডামি, ঈর্ষা ও সমস্ত রকম কুৎসা-রটানো ত্যাগ করো।
So putting away all wrongdoing, and all tricks and deceits and envies and evil talk,
2 নবজাত শিশুর মতো, বিশুদ্ধ আত্মিক দুধের আকাঙ্ক্ষা করো, যেন এর গুণে তোমরা পরিত্রাণের পূর্ণ অভিজ্ঞতায় বৃদ্ধিলাভ করতে পারো,
Be full of desire for the true milk of the word, as babies at their mothers' breasts, so that you may go on to salvation;
3 যেহেতু এখন তোমরা আস্বাদন করে দেখেছ যে, প্রভু মঙ্গলময়।
If you have had a taste of the grace of the Lord:
4 তোমরা যখন তাঁর কাছে অর্থাৎ সেই জীবন্ত পাথরের কাছে এসেছ—যিনি মানুষের দ্বারা প্রত্যাখ্যাত, কিন্তু ঈশ্বরের দ্বারা মনোনীত হয়েছিলেন ও তাঁর কাছে মহামূল্যবান ছিলেন—
To whom you come, as to a living stone, not honoured by men, but of great and special value to God;
5 তখন তোমাদেরও জীবন্ত পাথরের মতো, একটি আত্মিক আবাসরূপে গড়ে তোলা হচ্ছে, যেন এক পবিত্র যাজকসমাজ হয়ে তোমরা যীশু খ্রীষ্টের মাধ্যমে ঈশ্বরের কাছে গ্রহণযোগ্য আত্মিক বলি উৎসর্গ করতে পারো।
You, as living stones, are being made into a house of the spirit, a holy order of priests, making those offerings of the spirit which are pleasing to God through Jesus Christ.
6 কারণ শাস্ত্রে বলা হয়েছে: “দেখো, আমি সিয়োনে এক পাথর স্থাপন করি, এক মনোনীত ও মহামূল্যবান কোণের পাথর, যে তাঁর উপরে আস্থা রাখে, সে কখনও লজ্জিত হবে না।”
Because it is said in the Writings, See, I am placing a keystone in Zion, of great and special value; and the man who has faith in him will not be put to shame.
7 এখন তোমরা যারা বিশ্বাস করো, তাদের কাছে এই পাথর বহুমূল্য। কিন্তু যারা বিশ্বাস করে না, তাদের ক্ষেত্রে, “গাঁথকেরা যে পাথর অগ্রাহ্য করেছিল, তাই হয়ে উঠল কোণের প্রধান পাথর,”
And the value is for you who have faith; but it is said for those without faith, The very stone which the builders put on one side, was made the chief stone of the building;
8 এবং “এক পাথর, যাতে মানুষ হোঁচট খাবে এবং এক শিলা, যার কারণে তাদের পতন হবে।” সেই বাক্যের অবাধ্য হওয়াতে তারা হোঁচট খায়, যার জন্য তারা নির্ধারিত হয়েই আছে।
And, A stone of falling, a rock of trouble; the word is the cause of their fall, because they go against it, and this was the purpose of God.
9 কিন্তু তোমরা এক মনোনীত বংশ, এক রাজকীয় যাজক-সম্প্রদায়, এক পবিত্র জাতি, ঈশ্বরের অধিকারস্বরূপ নিজস্ব এক প্রজা, যেন তোমরা তাঁরই গুণকীর্তন করতে পারো, যিনি তোমাদের অন্ধকার থেকে আহ্বান করে তাঁর আশ্চর্য জ্যোতির মধ্যে নিয়ে এসেছেন।
But you are a special people, a holy nation, priests and kings, a people given up completely to God, so that you may make clear the virtues of him who took you out of the dark into the light of heaven.
10 এক সময় তোমরা তাঁর প্রজা ছিলে না, কিন্তু এখন তোমরা ঈশ্বরের প্রজা হয়েছ; এক সময় তোমরা করুণা পাওনি, কিন্তু এখন তোমরা করুণা লাভ করেছ।
In the past you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; then there was no mercy for you, but now mercy has been given to you.
11 প্রিয় বন্ধুরা, আমি তোমাদের অনুনয় করি, যেহেতু পৃথিবীতে তোমরা বিদেশি ও প্রবাসী তাই তোমরা পাপপূর্ণ কামনাবাসনা থেকে দূরে থাকো, যেগুলি তোমাদের প্রাণের বিরুদ্ধে যুদ্ধ করে।
My loved ones, I make this request with all my heart, that, as those for whom this world is a strange country, you will keep yourselves from the desires of the flesh which make war against the soul;
12 অবিশ্বাসী প্রতিবেশীদের মধ্যে তোমরা এমন উৎকৃষ্ট মানের জীবনযাপন করো যে, যদিও তারা তোমাদের দুষ্কর্মকারী বলে অপবাদ দেয়, তবুও তারা তোমাদের সৎ কর্মগুলি দেখতে পায় ও যেদিন ঈশ্বর আমাদের পরিদর্শন করেন, সেদিন তারা তাঁর গৌরব কীর্তন করবে।
Being of good behaviour among the Gentiles; so that though they say now that you are evil-doers, they may see your good works and give glory to God when he comes to be their judge.
13 তোমরা প্রভুর কারণে মানুষের মধ্যে নিযুক্ত প্রত্যেক কর্তৃপক্ষের বশ্যতাস্বীকার করো—তা তিনি সর্বোচ্চ ক্ষমতাসম্পন্ন রাজা হন
Keep all the laws of men because of the Lord; those of the king, who is over all,
14 বা তাঁর প্রেরিত প্রদেশপাল হন। কারণ অন্যায়কারীদের শাস্তি ও সদাচারীদের প্রশংসা করতে রাজাই তাঁদের নিযুক্ত করেছেন।
And those of the rulers who are sent by him for the punishment of evil-doers and for the praise of those who do well.
15 কারণ ঈশ্বরের ইচ্ছা হল এই যে, সৎকর্মের দ্বারা তোমরা নির্বোধ লোকেদের অর্থইীন কথাবার্তাকে যেন স্তব্ধ করে দিতে পারো।
Because it is God's pleasure that foolish and narrow-minded men may be put to shame by your good behaviour:
16 তোমরা স্বাধীন মানুষের মতো জীবনযাপন করো; কিন্তু তোমাদের স্বাধীনতাকে দুষ্কর্মের আড়ালস্বরূপ ব্যবহার কোরো না; বরং তোমরা ঈশ্বরের সেবকরূপে জীবনযাপন করো।
As those who are free, not using your free position as a cover for wrongdoing, but living as the servants of God;
17 প্রত্যেক মানুষের প্রতি যথোচিত সম্মান প্রদর্শন করো: বিশ্বাসী সমাজকে প্রেম করো, ঈশ্বরকে ভয় করো, রাজাকে সমাদর করো।
Have respect for all, loving the brothers, fearing God, honouring the king.
18 ক্রীতদাসেরা, তোমরা সব ব্যাপারে শ্রদ্ধার সঙ্গে তোমাদের মনিবদের বশ্যতাস্বীকার করো; কেবলমাত্র যারা সজ্জন ও সুবিবেচক, তাদেরই নয়, কিন্তু যারা হৃদয়হীন, তাদেরও।
Servants, take orders from your masters with all respect; not only if they are good and gentle, but even if they are bad-humoured.
19 কারণ ঈশ্বরসচেতন কোনো ব্যক্তি যদি অন্যায্য যন্ত্রণা পেয়ে কষ্টভোগ করে, তাহলে তা প্রশংসার যোগ্য।
For it is a sign of grace if a man, desiring to do right in the eyes of God, undergoes pain as punishment for something which he has not done.
20 কিন্তু অন্যায় কাজের জন্য যদি মার খাও ও তা সহ্য করো, তাহলে এতে তোমাদের কৃতিত্ব কোথায়? বরং সৎকর্মের জন্য যদি কষ্টভোগ করো ও তা সহ্য করো, তাই ঈশ্বরের কাছে প্রশংসনীয়।
What credit is it if, when you have done evil, you take your punishment quietly? but if you are given punishment for doing right, and take it quietly, this is pleasing to God.
21 এই উদ্দেশ্যেই তোমাদের আহ্বান করা হয়েছ, কারণ খ্রীষ্টও তোমাদের জন্য কষ্টভোগ করেছেন ও তোমাদের কাছে এক দৃষ্টান্ত রেখে গেছেন, যেন তোমরাও তাঁর চলার পথ অনুসরণ করো।
This is God's purpose for you: because Jesus himself underwent punishment for you, giving you an example, so that you might go in his footsteps:
22 “তিনি কোনও পাপ করেননি, তাঁর মুখেও কোনো ছলনার বাণী পাওয়া যায়নি।”
Who did no evil, and there was no deceit in his mouth:
23 তাঁর প্রতি যখন নিন্দা-অপমান বর্ষিত হল, তিনি প্রতিনিন্দা করলেন না। যখন কষ্টভোগ করলেন, তিনি কোনও কটু বাক্য উচ্চারণ করলেন না। পরিবর্তে, যিনি ন্যায়বিচারক, তিনি তাঁরই হাতে বিচারের ভার অর্পণ করলেন।
To sharp words he gave no sharp answer; when he was undergoing pain, no angry word came from his lips; but he put himself into the hands of the judge of righteousness:
24 স্বয়ং তিনি ক্রুশের উপরে নিজ শরীরে আমাদের “পাপরাশি বহন করলেন,” যেন আমরা পাপসমূহের প্রতি মৃত্যুবরণ করে ধার্মিকতার প্রতি জীবিত হই; “তাঁরই সব ক্ষত দ্বারা তোমরা আরোগ্য লাভ করেছ।”
He took our sins on himself, giving his body to be nailed on the tree, so that we, being dead to sin, might have a new life in righteousness, and by his wounds we have been made well.
25 কারণ “তোমরা বিপথগামী মেষের মতো ছিলে,” কিন্তু এখন তোমরা তোমাদের প্রাণের পালক ও তত্ত্বাবধায়কের কাছে ফিরে এসেছ।
Because, like sheep, you had gone out of the way; but now you have come back to him who keeps watch over your souls.
