১ম করিন্থীয় 8
1 এখন প্রতিমাদের কাছে উৎসর্গ করা খাবার সম্পর্কিত কথা। আমরা জানি যে, আমাদের সকলরেই জ্ঞান আছে। জ্ঞান গর্বিত করে, কিন্তু প্রেম গেঁথে তোলে।
Now as concerning things offered to idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth.
2 যে মনে করে যে সে কিছু জানে, তার যেমন জানা উচিত, তা সে এখনও জানে না।
And if any man thinketh that he knoweth any thing, he knoweth nothing yet as he ought to know.
3 কিন্তু যে ঈশ্বরকে ভালোবাসে, সেই ঈশ্বরের পরিচিত ব্যক্তি।
But if any man loveth God, the same is known by him.
4 তাহলে, প্রতিমাদের কাছে উৎসর্গ করা খাবার গ্রহণ করা সম্পর্কে বলতে হয়: আমরা জানি যে, কোনো প্রতিমা জগতে কিছুই নয় এবং আর কোনো ঈশ্বর নেই, কেবলমাত্র একজন আছেন।
Therefore as concerning the eating of those things that are offered in sacrifice to idols, we know that an idol [is] nothing in the world, and that [there is] no other God but one.
5 কারণ স্বর্গে, বা পৃথিবীতে, যদিও তথাকথিত কোনও দেবতারা থাকে (বাস্তবিক অনেক “দেবতা” ও অনেক “প্রভুর” কথা শোনা যায়),
For though there are that are called gods, whether in heaven or upon earth, (as there are gods many, and lords many)
6 তবুও আমাদের জন্য আছেন একমাত্র সেই পিতা ঈশ্বর, যাঁর কাছ থেকে সবকিছুরই উদ্ভব হয়েছে এবং যাঁর উদ্দেশ্যে আমরা জীবনধারণ করি; আবার একজনই প্রভুও আছেন, তিনি যীশু খ্রীষ্ট। তাঁরই মাধ্যমে সবকিছু উদ্ভূত হয়েছে এবং তাঁরই মাধ্যমে আমরা জীবনধারণ করি।
Yet to us [there is but] one God, the Father, from whom [are] all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom [are] all things, and we by him.
7 কিন্তু প্রত্যেকেই একথা জানে না। কিছু সংখ্যক মানুষ প্রতিমার বিষয়ে এমনই অভ্যস্ত, তারা যখন এ ধরনের খাবার গ্রহণ করে, তারা মনে করে যে, সেই খাবার যেন কোনো প্রতিমার কাছে উৎসর্গ করা হয়েছে, আর যেহেতু তাদের বিবেক দুর্বল, তাই তা কলুষিত হয়।
But [there is] not in every man that knowledge: for some with conscience of the idol to this hour eat [it] as a thing offered to an idol; and their conscience, being weak, is defiled.
8 কিন্তু খাবার আমাদের ঈশ্বরের নিকটে নিয়ে আসে না; আমরা যদি সেই খাবার না খাই, আমাদের ক্ষতি হয় না; আবার তা গ্রহণ করলেও কোনো লাভ হয় না।
But food commendeth us not to God: for neither if we eat, are we the better; neither if we eat not, are we the worse.
9 কিন্তু, তোমরা সতর্ক থেকো, তোমাদের এই অধিকার যেন কোনোভাবেই দুর্বল মানুষের কাছে বিঘ্নের কারণ না হয়।
But take heed lest by any means this liberty of yours should become a stumbling-block to them that are weak.
10 কারণ দুর্বল বিবেকবিশিষ্ট যদি কেউ তোমাকে, অর্থাৎ তোমার মতো জ্ঞানবিশিষ্ট মানুষকে, প্রতিমার মন্দিরে খাবার গ্রহণ করতে দেখে, তাহলে সে কি প্রতিমাদের কাছে উৎসর্গ করা খাবার গ্রহণ করতে সাহস পাবে না?
For if any man shall see thee, who hast knowledge, sit eating in the idol's temple, will not the conscience of him who is weak be emboldened to eat those things which are offered to idols;
11 তাই, তোমার জ্ঞানের জন্য এই দুর্বল বিশ্বাসী, যার জন্য খ্রীষ্ট মৃত্যুবরণ করেছেন, তাকে নষ্ট করা হয়।
And through thy knowledge shall the weak brother perish, for whom Christ died?
12 তোমরা যখন তোমাদের ভাইবোনের বিরুদ্ধে পাপ করো ও তাদের দুর্বল বিবেককে আঘাত করো, তোমরা খ্রীষ্টের বিরুদ্ধে পাপ করো।
But when ye thus sin against the brethren, and wound their weak conscience, ye sin against Christ.
13 এই কারণে, আমি যে খাবার গ্রহণ করি, তা যদি অপর বিশ্বাসীর পাপে পতনের কারণ হয়, আমি আর কখনও সেই খাবার গ্রহণ করব না, যেন আমি তার পতনের কারণ না হই। (aiōn g165)
Wherefore, if food maketh my brother to fall into sin, I will eat no flesh while the world standeth, lest I make my brother to fall into sin. (aiōn g165)
