হিতোপদেশ 23

1 ১ যখন তুমি শাসনকর্ত্তার সঙ্গে খেতে বসবে, তখন তোমার সামনে কি রাখা আছে, ভালোভাবে পর্যবেক্ষণ কোরো;

When you sit to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before you;

2 ২ আর যদি তুমি এমন এক জনের মতো হও যে প্রচুর খাবার খায়, তবে ছুরি নিয়ে নিজের গলায় দেয়।

put a knife to your throat, if you are a man given to appetite.

3 ৩ তার সুস্বাদু খাবারের আকাঙ্খা কোরো না, কারণ তা মিথ্যার খাবার।

Do not be desirous of his dainties, seeing they are deceitful food.

4 ৪ ধনী হতে খুব কঠিন কাজ কোরো না, তোমার নিজের বুদ্ধি হতে থেমে যাও।

Do not weary yourself to be rich. In your wisdom, show restraint.

5 ৫ তুমি কি অর্থের দিকে দেখছ? তা আর নেই এবং কারণ ঈগল যেমন আকাশে উড়ে যায়, তেমনি ধন নিজের জন্য নিশ্চয়ই পক্ষ তৈরী করে।

Why do you set your eyes on that which is not? For it certainly sprouts wings like an eagle and flies in the sky.

6 ৬ কুদৃষ্টিকারীর খাবার খেও না, তার সুস্বাদু খাবারের আকাঙ্খা কোরো না;

Do not eat the food of him who has a stingy eye, and do not crave his delicacies:

7 ৭ কারণ সে এমন ধরনের লোক যে খাবারের দাম গণ্য করে; সে তোমাকে বলে, “তুমি খাবার খাও ও পান কর!” কিন্তু তার হৃদয় তোমার সঙ্গে নয়।

for as he thinks about the cost, so he is. "Eat and drink." he says to you, but his heart is not with you.

8 ৮ তুমি যা খেয়েছ, তা বমি করবে এবং তোমার প্রশংসা নষ্ট হবে।

The morsel which you have eaten you shall vomit up, and lose your good words.

9 ৯ নির্বোধের কানে বোলো না, কারণ সে তোমার বাক্যের প্রজ্ঞা অবজ্ঞা করবে।

Do not speak in the ears of a fool, for he will despise the wisdom of your words.

10 ১০ সীমার পুরাতন পাথর সরিও না, অথবা অনাথদের ক্ষেতে অবৈধভাবে প্রবেশ কোরো না।

Do not move the ancient boundary stone. Do not encroach on the fields of the fatherless:

11 ১১ কারণ তাদের উদ্ধারকর্তা শক্তিশালী এবং তিনি তোমার বিরুদ্ধে তাদের পক্ষে সমর্থন করবে।

for their Defender is strong. He will plead their case against you.

12 ১২ তোমার হৃদয়কে নির্দেশে নিযুক্ত কর এবং জ্ঞানের কথায় কান দাও।

Apply your heart to instruction, and your ears to the words of knowledge.

13 ১৩ বালককে শাসন করতে সংযত হয়ো না; কারণ তুমি লাঠি দিয়ে তাকে মারলে সে মরবে না।

Do not withhold correction from a child. If you punish him with the rod, he will not die.

14 ১৪ যদি তুমি তাকে লাঠি দিয়ে মার, পাতাল থেকে তার প্রাণকে রক্ষা করবে। (Sheol h7585)

Punish him with the rod, and save his soul from Sheol. (Sheol h7585)

15 ১৫ আমার পুত্র, তোমার হৃদয় যদি জ্ঞানশালী হয়, তবে আমার হৃদয়ও আনন্দিত হবে;

My son, if your heart is wise, then my heart will be glad, even mine:

16 ১৬ আমার অন্তর উল্লাসিত হবে, যখন তোমার ঠোঁট যা ঠিক তাই বলে।

yes, my heart will rejoice, when your lips speak what is right.

17 ১৭ তোমার মন পাপীদের প্রতি হিংসা না করুক, কিন্তু তুমি সমস্ত দিন সদাপ্রভুর ভয়ে থাক।

Do not let your heart envy sinners; but rather fear the LORD all the day long.

18 ১৮ অবশ্যই সেখানে ভবিষ্যত আছে, তোমার আশা উছিন্ন হবে না।

For surely there is a future, and your hope will not be cut off.

19 ১৯ শোনো, আমার পুত্র এবং জ্ঞানবান হও এবং তোমার হৃদয়কে সঠিক পথে চালাও।

Listen, my son, and be wise, and keep your heart on the right path.

20 ২০ মাতালদের সঙ্গী হয়ো না, অথবা পেটুক মাংসভোজনকারীদের সঙ্গী হয়ো না।

Do not be among ones drinking too much wine, or those who gorge themselves on meat:

21 ২১ কারণ মাতাল ও পেটুকের অভাব ঘটে এবং তন্দ্রা তাদেরকে নেকড়া পরায়।

for the drunkard and the glutton shall become poor; and drowsiness clothes them in rags.

22 ২২ তোমার জন্মদাতা বাবার কথা শোনো, তোমার মা বৃদ্ধা হলে তাঁকে তুচ্ছ কর না।

Listen to your father who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old.

23 ২৩ সত্য কিনে নাও, বিক্রয় কর না; প্রজ্ঞা, শাসন ও সুবিবেচনা কিনে নাও।

Buy the truth, and do not sell it. Get wisdom, discipline, and understanding.

24 ২৪ ধার্ম্মিকের বাবা মহা-উল্লাসিত হন এবং জ্ঞানবানের জন্মদাতা তাতে আনন্দ করেন।

The father of the righteous has great joy. Whoever fathers a wise child delights in him.

25 ২৫ তোমার বাবা মা আহ্লাদিত হোন এবং তোমার জন্মদাত্রী উল্লাসিতা হোন।

Let your father and your mother be glad. Let her who bore you rejoice.

26 ২৬ আমার পুত্র, তোমার হৃদয় আমাকে দাও এবং তোমার চোখ আমার পথসমূহকে মেনে চলুক।

My son, give me your heart; and let your eyes keep in my ways.

27 ২৭ কারণ বেশ্যা গভীর খাত এবং বিজাতীয়া স্ত্রী সঙ্কীর্ণ গর্ত।

For a prostitute is a deep pit; and a wayward wife is a narrow well.

28 ২৮ সে ডাকাতের মতো বসে থাকে এবং মানুষদের মধ্যে বিশ্বাসঘাতক দলের বৃদ্ধি করে।

Yes, she lies in wait like a robber, and increases the unfaithful among men.

29 ২৯ কার দুর্ভাগ্য? কে দুঃখ প্রকাশ করে? কে ঝগড়া করে? কে অভিযোগ করে? কে অকারণে আঘাত পায়? কার চোখ লাল হয়?

Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has strife? Who has complaints? Who has needless bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes?

30 ৩০ যারা আঙ্গুর রসের কাছে দীর্ঘকাল থাকে, যারা আঙ্গুর রস মেশানোর চেষ্টা করে।

Those who stay long at the wine; those who go to seek out mixed wine.

31 ৩১ আঙ্গুর রসের প্রতি তাকিয় না, যদিও ওটা লাল, যদিও ওটা পাত্রে চকমক করে এবং যদিও সহজে নেমে যায়;

Do not look at the wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup, when it goes down smoothly.

32 ৩২ অবশেষে এটা সাপের মতো কামড়ায় এবং বিষধরের মতো দংশন করে।

In the end, it bites like a serpent, and poisons like a viper.

33 ৩৩ তোমার চোখ পরকীয়াদেরকে দেখবে, তোমার হৃদয় খারাপ কথা বলবে;

Your eyes will see strange things, and your mind will imagine confusing things.

34 ৩৪ তুমি তার মতো হবে, যে সমুদ্রের মাঝখানে শোয় অথবা যে মাস্তুলের ওপরে শোয়।

Yes, you will be as he who lies down in the midst of the sea, or as he who lies on top of the rigging:

35 ৩৫ তুমি বলবে, তারা আমাকে মেরেছে, কিন্তু আমি ব্যথা পাইনি; তারা আমাকে প্রহার করেছে, কিন্তু আমি বুঝতে পারিনি। আমি কখন জেগে উঠব? আর তার খোঁজ করব।

"They hit me, and I was not hurt. They beat me, and I do not feel it. When will I wake up? I can do it again. I can find another."
