উপদেশক 10

1 ১ যেমন মরা মাছি সুগন্ধকে দুর্গন্ধে পরিণত করে, তেমনি একটা ছোট্ট মূর্খতা প্রজ্ঞা ও সম্মান নষ্ট করতে পারে।

Dead flies make the oil of the perfumer loathsome and corrupt; thus doth a little folly weigh down wisdom and honor.

2 ২ জ্ঞানবানের হৃদয় ডানদিকে, কিন্তু মূর্খের হৃদয় বামদিকে ঝুঁকে।

A wise man's mind is at his right hand; but a fool's mind is at his left.

3 ৩ যখন একজন মূর্খ রাস্তা দিয়ে হেঁটে যায়, তার চিন্তার অভাব, প্রত্যেকজনকে প্রমাণ করে সে মূর্খ।

Yea, even when the fool walketh in the way, his understanding faileth him, and he saith to every one that he is a fool.

4 ৪ যদি কোন শাসনকর্ত্তার মনোভাব তোমার বিরুদ্ধে ওঠে, তোমার কাজ ছেড়ো না। শান্তভাব বড় বড় অপরাধ ক্ষান্ত করতে পারে।

If the anger of a ruler rise up against thee, leave not thy place! for gentleness pacifieth great offences.

5 ৫ একটা মন্দতা আছে যা আমি সূর্য্যের নিচে দেখেছি, এরকম ভুল যা শাসনকর্ত্তার থেকে আসে:

There is an evil which I have seen under the sun; an error which proceedeth from a ruler.

6 ৬ মূর্খদের নেতার পদ দেওয়া হয়েছে, যখন সফল ব্যক্তিকে নিচু পদ দেওয়া হয়েছে।

Folly is set in many high stations, and the noble sit in a low place.

7 ৭ আমি দাসদের ঘোড়া চালাতে দেখেছি এবং সফল ব্যক্তিকে দাসের মত মাটিতে হাঁটতে দেখেছি।

I have seen servants upon horses, and princes walking as servants on foot.

8 ৮ যে কেউ গর্ত খোঁড়ে সে তাতেই পড়তে পারে এবং যখনই কেউ দেওয়াল ভাঙ্গে, তাকে সাপ কামড়াতে পারে।

He that diggeth a pit shall fall into it; and whoso breaketh down a wall, a serpent shall bite him.

9 ৯ যে কেউ পাথর কাটে, সে তাই দিয়ে আঘাত পেতে পারে এবং সেই ব্যক্তি যে কাঠ টুকরো করে, সে তাই দিয়ে বিপদে পড়তে পারে।

Whoso removeth stones shall be hurt therewith, and he that cleaveth wood shall be endangered thereby.

10 ১০ যদি একটা লোহার ফলা ভোঁতা হয় এবং একটি মানুষ যদি তাতে ধার না দেয়, তাহলে তাকে অবশ্যই বেশি শক্তি ব্যবহার করতে হবে, কিন্তু প্রজ্ঞা একটা সুবিধা যোগায় সফলতা পাবার জন্য।

If the iron be blunt, and one do not whet the edge, then must he put forth more strength; but an advantage for giving success hath wisdom.

11 ১১ মন্ত্রমুগ্ধ হওয়ার আগে যদি সাপে কামড়ায়, তাহলে মন্ত্রপাঠকের কোন লাভ হয় না।

If a serpent bite before he is charmed, then there is no advantage to the charmer.

12 ১২ একজন জ্ঞানী লোকের মুখের কথা অনুগ্রহ যুক্ত, কিন্তু মূর্খের ঠোঁট নিজেকে গিলে ফেলে।

The words of a wise man's mouth are gracious; but the lips of a fool are his destruction.

13 ১৩ মূর্খের মুখ থেকে কথা বেরোনো শুরু হলেই, মূর্খতা বেরিয়ে আসে এবং শেষে তার মুখ থেকে মন্দ প্রলাপ বয়।

The beginning of the words of his mouth is folly, and the end of his talk is mischievous madness.

14 ১৪ মূর্খ অনেক কথা বলে, কিন্তু কেউ জানে কি আসছে। কে জানে তার পিছনে কি আসছে?

A fool also multiplieth words, though no man knoweth what shall be; and who can tell him what shall be after him?

15 ১৫ মূর্খদের পরিশ্রম তাদের ক্লান্ত করে, যাতে তারা শহরে রাস্তা এমনকি জানে না।

The labor of the foolish man wearieth him, because he knoweth not how to go to the city.

16 ১৬ দেশে সমস্যা থাকবে যদি তোমার রাজা শিশু হয় এবং তোমার নেতারা সকালে ভোজ শুরু করে!

Woe to thee, O land, when thy king is a child, and thy princes feast in the morning!

17 ১৭ কিন্তু সেই দেশ খুশি হয় যখন তোমার রাজা উচ্চবংশের ছেলে হয় এবং তোমার নেতারা খাবার খায় যখন খাবার খাওয়ার দিন হয় এবং তারা তা করে শক্তিবৃদ্ধির জন্য, মাতাল হওয়ার জন্য নয়!

Happy thou, O land, when thy king is a noble, and thy princes eat in due season, for strength, and not for drunkenness!

18 ১৮ কারণ অলসতায় ছাদ বসে যায় এবং অলস হাতের কাজে ঘরে জল পড়ে।

By much slothfulness the building decayeth; and by the slackness of the hands the house leaketh.

19 ১৯ লোকেরা হাঁসার জন্য খাবার তৈরী করে, দ্রাক্ষারস জীবনে আনন্দ নিয়ে আসে এবং টাকা সমস্ত কিছুর অভাব পূরণ করে।

A feast is made for laughter, and wine makes merry; but money answereth all things.

20 ২০ রাজাকে অভিশাপ দিও না, এমনকি তোমার মনেও দিও না এবং তোমার শোয়ার ঘরে ধনীকে অভিশাপ দিও না। কারণ আকাশের পাখি তোমার কথা বহন করতে পারে; যার পাখা আছে সে এ বিষয়ে ছড়াতে পারে।

Curse not the king; no, not in thy thought; and curse not the rich in thy bed-chamber! for a bird of the air shall carry the voice; and that which hath wings shall tell the matter.
