الأمثال 3

١ 1 يَا ابْنِي لَا تَنْسَ تَعَالِيمِي، وَلْيُرَاعِ قَلْبُكَ وَصَايَايَ.

My son, mine instruction, do not thou forget, and, my commandment, let thy heart observe;

٢ 2 لأَنَّهَا تَمُدُّ فِي أَيَّامِ عُمْرِكَ، وَتَزِيدُكَ سِنِي حَيَاةٍ وَسَلاماً.

For, length of days and years of life, and blessedness, shall they add to thee.

٣ 3 لَا تَدَعِ الرَّحْمَةَ وَالأَمَانَةَ تَتَخَلَّيَانِ عَنْكَ، بَلْ تَقَلَّدْهُمَا فِي عُنُقِكَ، وَاكْتُبْهُمَا عَلَى صَفْحَةِ قَلْبِكَ،

Lovingkindness and faithfulness, let them not forsake thee, —bind them, upon thy neck, write them upon the tablet of thy heart:

٤ 4 فَتَحْظَى بِالرِّضَى وَحُسْنِ السِّيرَةِ فِي عُيُونِ اللهِ وَالنَّاسِ.

So find thou favour and good repute, in the eyes of God and man.

٥ 5 اتَّكِلْ عَلَى الرَّبِّ بِكُلِّ قَلْبِكَ، وَعَلَى فِطْنَتِكَ لَا تَعْتَمِدْ.

Trust thou in Yahweh, with all thy heart, and, unto thine own understanding, do not lean:

٦ 6 اعْرِفِ الرَّبَّ فِي كُلِّ طُرُقِكَ وَهُوَ يُقَوِّمُ سُبُلَكَ.

In all thy ways, acknowledge him, and, he, will make straight thy paths.

٧ 7 لَا تَكُنْ حَكِيماً فِي عَيْنَيْ نَفْسِكَ بَلِ اتَّقِ الرَّبَّ وَحِدْ عَنِ الشَّرِّ،

Do not become wise in thine own eyes, revere Yahweh, and avoid evil:

٨ 8 فَيَتَمَتَّعَ جَسَدُكَ بِالصِّحَّةِ، وَتَتَمَتَّعَ عِظَامُكَ بِالارْتِوَاءِ.

Healing, shall it be to thy body, and refreshing, to thy bones.

٩ 9 أَكْرِمِ الرَّبَّ مِنْ مَالِكَ، وَمِنْ أَوَائِلِ غَلَّاتِ مَحَاصِيلِكَ.

Honour thou Yahweh, with thy substance, and with the firstfruit of all thine increase;

١٠ 10 فَتَمْتَلِئَ مَخَازِنُكَ وَفْرَةً، وَتَفِيضَ مَعَاصِرُكَ خَمْراً.

So shall thy storehouses be filled with plenty, and, with new wine, shall thy vats overflow.

١١ 11 يَا ابْنِي لَا تَحْتَقِرْ تَأْدِيبَ الرَّبِّ وَلا تَكْرَهْ تَوْبِيخَهُ،

The, chastening of Yahweh, my son, do not reject, nor loathe his rebuke;

١٢ 12 لأَنَّ مَنْ يُحِبُّهُ الرَّبُّ يُؤَدِّبُهُ، وَيُسَرُّ بِهِ كَمَا يُسَرُّ أَبٌ بِابْنِهِ.

For, whom Yahweh loveth, he correcteth, he causeth pain to the son in whom he delighteth.

١٣ 13 طُوبَى لِلإِنْسَانِ الَّذِي عَثَرَ عَلَى الْحِكْمَةِ وَلِلرَّجُلِ الَّذِي أَحْرَزَ فَهْماً،

How happy the man who hath found wisdom, and the man who draweth forth understanding,

١٤ 14 لأَنَّ مَكَاسِبَهَا أَفْضَلُ مِنْ مَكَاسِبِ الْفِضَّةِ، وَأَرْبَاحَهَا خَيْرٌ مِنْ أَرْبَاحِ الذَّهَبِ الْخَالِصِ.

For better is her merchandise, than the merchandise of silver, yea, than gold, her increase;

١٥ 15 هِيَ أَثْمَنُ مِنَ الْجَوَاهِرِ، وَكُلُّ نَفَائِسِكَ لَا تُعَادِلُهَا.

More precious, is she, than corals, yea, none of thy delightful things, doth equal her:

١٦ 16 فِي يَمِينِهَا حَيَاةٌ مَدِيدَةٌ وَفِي يَسَارِهَا غِنىً وَجَاهٌ.

Length of days, is in her right hand, in her left, are riches and honour;

١٧ 17 طُرُقُهَا طُرُقُ نِعَمٍ، وَدُرُوبُهَا دُرُوبُ سَلامٍ.

Her ways, are ways of pleasantness, and, all her paths, are peace;

١٨ 18 هِيَ شَجَرَةُ حَيَاةٍ لِمَنْ يَتَشَبَّثُ بِها، وَهَنِيئاً لِمَنْ يَتَمَسَّكُ بِها.

A tree of life, is she, to them who secure her, —and, they who hold her fast, are every one to be pronounced happy.

١٩ 19 بِالْحِكْمَةِ أَسَّسَ الرَّبُّ الأَرْضَ، وَبِالْفِطْنَةِ ثَبَّتَ السَّمَاوَاتِ فِي مَوَاضِعِهَا.

Yahweh, in wisdom, founded the earth, establishing the heavens with understanding;

٢٠ 20 بِعِلْمِهِ تَفَجَّرَتِ اللُّجَجُ، وَقَطَرَ السَّحَابُ نَدىً.

By his knowledge, the resounding deeps were burst open, and, the skies, drop down dew.

٢١ 21 فَلا تَبْرَحْ يَا ابْنِي هَذِهِ مِنْ أَمَامِ عَيْنَيْكَ وَاعْمَلْ بِالرَّأْيِ الصَّائِبِ وَالتَّدْبِيرِ.

My son, let them not depart from thine eyes, guard thou counsel, and purpose:

٢٢ 22 فَيَكُونَ هَذَانِ حَيَاةً لِنَفْسِكَ وَقَلادَةً تُجَمِّلُ عُنُقَكَ.

So shall they become life to thy soul, and an adorning to thy neck;

٢٣ 23 فَتَسْلُكُ آنَئِذٍ فِي طَرِيقِكَ آمِناً وَلا تَتَعَثَّرُ قَدَمُكَ.

Then, shalt thou walk securely in thy way, and, thy foot, shall not stumble;

٢٤ 24 إِذَا اضْطَجَعْتَ لَا يَعْتَرِيكَ خَوْفٌ، بَلْ تَرْقُدُ مُتَمَتِّعاً بِالنَّوْمِ اللَّذِيذِ.

When thou sittest down, thou shalt have no dread, yea thou shalt lie down, and sweet shall be thy sleep.

٢٥ 25 لَا تَفْزَعْ مِنْ بَلِيَّةٍ مُبَاغِتَةٍ، وَلا مِمَّا يَجْرِي عَلَى الأَشْرَارِ مِنْ خَرَابٍ إِذَا حَلَّ بِهِمْ.

Be not thou afraid of sudden dread, nor of the desolation of the lawless, when it cometh.

٢٦ 26 لأَنَّ الرَّبَّ يَكُونُ مُعْتَمَدَكَ، وَيَصُونُ رِجْلَكَ مِنَ الشَّرَكِ.

For, Yahweh, will be in all thy ways, and will keep thy foot from the snare.

٢٧ 27 لَا تَحْجُبِ الإِحْسَانَ عَنْ أَهْلِهِ كُلَّمَا كَانَ فِي وُسْعِكَ أَنْ تَقُومَ بِهِ.

Withhold not good from them who ask it, when it is in power of thy hand to do it:

٢٨ 28 لَا تَقُلْ لِجَارِكَ: «اذْهَبِ الآنَ، ثُمَّ عُدْ ثَانِيَةً. غَداً أُعْطِيكَ مَا تَطْلُبُ»، طَالَمَا لَدَيْكَ مَا يَطْلُبُ.

Do not say to thy neighbour, Go and come again, and to-morrow I will give, when thou hast it by thee.

٢٩ 29 لَا تَتَآمَرْ بِالشَّرِّ عَلَى جَارِكَ الْمُقِيمِ مُطْمَئِنّاً إِلَى جُوَارِكَ.

Devise not against thy neighbour an injury, seeing that, he, dwelleth securely by thee.

٣٠ 30 لَا تُخَاصِمْ أَحَداً مِنْ غَيْرِ عِلَّةٍ طَالَمَا لَمْ يُؤْذِكَ.

Contend not with a man without cause, if he hath dealt thee no wrong.

٣١ 31 لَا تَغَرْ مِنَ الظَّالِمِ وَلا تَخْتَرْ طُرُقَهُ.

Do not thou envy the man of violence, neither choose thou any of his ways;

٣٢ 32 لأَنَّ الْمُلْتَوِيَ رِجْسٌ لَدَى الرَّبِّ، أَمَّا الْمُسْتَقِيمُونَ فَهُمْ أَهْلُ ثِقَتِهِ.

For, an abomination to Yahweh, is the tortuous man, but, with the upright, he is intimate.

٣٣ 33 لَعْنَةُ الرَّبِّ تَنْصَبُّ عَلَى بَيْتِ الشِّرِّيرِ، لَكِنَّهُ يُبَارِكُ مَسْكَنَ الصِّدِّيقِ.

The curse of Yahweh, is in the house of the lawless one, but, the home of the righteous, he blesseth.

٣٤ 34 يَسخَرُ مِنَ الْمُسْتَكْبِرِينَ السَّاخِرِينَ، وَيُغْدِقُ رِضَاهُ عَلَى الْمُتَوَاضِعِينَ

Though at scoffers he scoffeth, yet, to the humbled, he granteth favour.

٣٥ 35 يَرِثُ الْحُكَمَاءُ كَرَامَةً، أَمَّا الْحَمْقَى فَيَرْتَدُونَ الْعَارَ.

Honour, shall the wise inherit, —but, as for dullards, shame shall carry them away.
