الأمثال 23

١ 1 إِذَا جَلَسْتَ تَأْكُلُ مَعَ حَاكِمٍ، فَتَأَمَّلْ أَشَدَّ التَّأَمُّلِ فِيمَا هُوَ أَمَامَكَ.

When you sit to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before you:

٢ 2 ضَعْ سِكِّيناً فِي حَلْقِكَ إِنْ كُنْتَ شَرِهاً!

And put a knife to your throat, if you be a man given to appetite.

٣ 3 لَا تَشْتَهِ أَطَايِبَهُ لأَنَّهَا أَطْعِمَةٌ خَادِعَةٌ.

Be not desirous of his dainties: for they are deceitful meat.

٤ 4 لَا تَشْقَ طَلَباً للثَّرَاءِ. اكْبَحْ جِمَاحَ نَفْسِكَ بِفَضْلِ فِطْنَتِكَ.

Labor not to be rich: cease from your own wisdom.

٥ 5 مَا تَكَادُ تَتَأَلَّقُ عَيْنَاكَ حُبُوراً بِهِ حَتَّى يَتَبَدَّدَ، إِذْ فَجْأَةً يَصْنَعُ لِنَفْسِهِ أَجْنِحَةً وَيَطِيرُ كَالنَّسْرِ مُحَلِّقاً نَحْوَ السَّمَاءِ.

Will you set your eyes on that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven.

٦ 6 لَا تَأْكُلْ مِنْ خُبْزِ رَجُلٍ بَخِيلٍ، وَلا تَشْتَهِ أَطَايِبَهُ،

Eat you not the bread of him that has an evil eye, neither desire you his dainty meats:

٧ 7 لأَنَّهُ يُفَكِّرُ دَائِماً فِي الثَّمَنِ. يَقُولُ لَكَ: كُلْ وَاشْرَبْ، إِلّا أَنَّ قَلْبَهُ يَكُنُّ لَكَ غَيْرَ ذَلِكَ،

For as he thinks in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, says he to you; but his heart is not with you.

٨ 8 فَتَتَقَيَّأَ اللُّقَمَ الَّتِي أَكَلْتَهَا وَتَذْهَبَ كَلِمَاتُكَ الطَّيِّبَةُ سُدىً!

The morsel which you have eaten shall you vomit up, and lose your sweet words.

٩ 9 لَا تَتَكَلَّمْ فِي مَسَامِعِ الْجَاهِلِ لأَنَّهُ يَزْدَرِي بِحِكْمَةِ أَقْوَالِكَ.

Speak not in the ears of a fool: for he will despise the wisdom of your words.

١٠ 10 لَا تَنْقُلْ مَعَالِمَ تُخْمٍ قَدِيمٍ، وَلا تَدْخُلْ حُقُولَ الأَيْتَامِ،

Remove not the old landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless:

١١ 11 لأَنَّ وَلِيَّهُمْ قَادِرٌ، وَهُوَ يُدَافِعُ عَنْ دَعْوَاهُمْ ضِدَّكَ.

For their redeemer is mighty; he shall plead their cause with you.

١٢ 12 وَجِّهْ قَلْبَكَ إِلَى التَّأْدِيبِ، وَأَرْهِفْ أُذُنَيْكَ لِكَلِمَاتِ الْمَعْرِفَةِ.

Apply your heart to instruction, and your ears to the words of knowledge.

١٣ 13 لَا تَمْتَنِعْ عَنْ تَأْدِيبِ الْوَلَدِ. إِنْ عَاقَبْتَهُ بِالْعَصَا لَا يَمُوتُ.

Withhold not correction from the child: for if you beat him with the rod, he shall not die.

١٤ 14 اضْرِبْهُ بِالْعَصَا، فَتُنْقِذَ نَفْسَهُ مِنَ الْهَاوِيَةِ. (Sheol h7585)

You shall beat him with the rod, and shall deliver his soul from hell. (Sheol h7585)

١٥ 15 يَا ابْنِي إِنْ كَانَ قَلْبُكَ حَكِيماً، يَبْتَهِجُ قَلْبِي أَيْضاً،

My son, if your heart be wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine.

١٦ 16 تَفْرَحُ نَفْسِي عِنْدَمَا تَنْطِقُ شَفَتَاكَ بِالْحَقِّ.

Yes, my reins shall rejoice, when your lips speak right things.

١٧ 17 لَا يَغَرْ قَلْبُكَ مِنَ الْخُطَاةِ، بَلْ وَاظِبْ عَلَى تَقْوَى الرَّبِّ الْيَوْمَ كُلَّهُ،

Let not your heart envy sinners: but be you in the fear of the LORD all the day long.

١٨ 18 فَهُنَاكَ حَقّاً ثَوَابٌ، وَرَجَاؤُكَ لَنْ يَخِيبَ.

For surely there is an end; and your expectation shall not be cut off.

١٩ 19 اسْتَمِعْ يَا ابْنِي وَكُنْ حَكِيماً، وَوَجِّهْ قَلْبَكَ نَحْوَ سَبِيلِ الْحَقِّ.

Hear you, my son, and be wise, and guide your heart in the way.

٢٠ 20 لَا تَكُنْ وَاحِداً مِنْ مُدْمِنِي الْخَمْرِ، الشَّرِهِينَ لاِلْتِهَامِ اللَّحْمِ،

Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh:

٢١ 21 لأَنَّ السِّكِّيرَ وَالشَّرِهَ يَفْتَقِرَانِ، وَكَثْرَةُ النَّوْمِ تَكْسُو الْمَرْءَ بِالْخِرَقِ.

For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.

٢٢ 22 اسْتَمِعْ لأَبِيكَ الَّذِي أَنْجَبَكَ، وَلا تَحْتَقِرْ أُمَّكَ إِذَا شَاخَتْ.

Listen to your father that begat you, and despise not your mother when she is old.

٢٣ 23 اقْتَنِ الْحَقَّ وَلا تَبِعْهُ، وَكَذَا الْحِكْمَةَ وَالتَّأْدِيبَ وَالْفِطْنَةَ.

Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.

٢٤ 24 أَبُو الصِّدِّيقِ يَغْتَبِطُ أَشَدَّ الاغْتِبَاطِ، وَمَنْ أَنْجَبَ حَكِيماً يُسَرُّ بِهِ.

The father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice: and he that begets a wise child shall have joy of him.

٢٥ 25 لِيَفْرَحْ أَبُوكَ وَأُمُّكَ وَلْتَبْتَهِجْ مَنْ أَنْجَبَتْكَ.

Your father and your mother shall be glad, and she that bore you shall rejoice.

٢٦ 26 يَا ابْنِي هَبْنِي قَلْبَكَ، وَلْتُرَاعِ عَيْنَاكَ سُبُلِي.

My son, give me your heart, and let your eyes observe my ways.

٢٧ 27 فَإِنَّ الْعَاهِرَةَ حُفْرَةٌ عَمِيقَةٌ، وَالزَّوْجَةَ الْمَاجِنَةَ بِئْرٌ ضَيِّقَةٌ،

For a whore is a deep ditch; and a strange woman is a narrow pit.

٢٨ 28 تَكْمُنُ مُتَرَبِّصَةً كَلِصٍّ، وَتَزِيدُ مِنَ الْغَادِرِينَ بَيْنَ النَّاسِ.

She also lies in wait as for a prey, and increases the transgressors among men.

٢٩ 29 لِمَنِ الْمُعَانَاةُ؟ لِمَنِ الْوَيْلُ وَالشَّقَاءُ وَالْمُخَاصَمَاتُ وَالشَّكْوَى؟ لِمَنِ الْجِرَاحُ بِلا سَبَبٍ؟ وِلِمَنِ احْمِرَارُ الْعَيْنَيْنِ؟

Who has woe? who has sorrow? who has contentions? who has babbling? who has wounds without cause? who has redness of eyes?

٣٠ 30 إِنَّهَا لِلْمُدْمِنِينَ الْخَمْرَ، السَّاعِينَ وَرَاءَ الْمُسْكِرِ الْمَمْزُوجِ.

They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine.

٣١ 31 لَا تَنْظُرْ إِلَى الْخَمْرِ إِذَا الْتَهَبَتْ بِالاحْمِرَارِ، وَتَأَلَّقَتْ فِي الْكَأْسِ، وَسَالَتْ سَائِغَةً،

Look not you on the wine when it is red, when it gives his color in the cup, when it moves itself aright.

٣٢ 32 فَإِنَّهَا فِي آخِرِهَا تَلْسَعُ كَالْحَيَّةِ وَتَلْدَغُ كَالأُفْعُوَانِ.

At the last it bites like a serpent, and stings like an adder.

٣٣ 33 فَتُشَاهِدُ عَيْنَاكَ أُمُوراً غَرِيبَةً، وَقَلْبُكَ يُحَدِّثُكَ بِأَشْيَاءَ مُلْتَوِيَةٍ،

Your eyes shall behold strange women, and your heart shall utter perverse things.

٣٤ 34 فَتَكُونُ مُتَرَنِّحاً كَمَنْ يَضْطَجِعُ فِي وَسَطِ عُبَابِ الْبَحْرِ، أَوْ كَرَاقِدٍ عَلَى قِمَّةِ سَارِيَةٍ!

Yes, you shall be as he that lies down in the middle of the sea, or as he that lies on the top of a mast.

٣٥ 35 فَتَقُولُ: «ضَرَبُونِي وَلَكِنْ لَمْ أَتَوَجَّعْ. لَكَمُونِي فَلَمْ أَشْعُرْ، فَمَتَى أَسْتَيْقِظُ؟ سَأَذْهَبُ أَلْتَمِسُ شُرْبَهَا مَرَّةً أُخْرَى».

They have stricken me, shall you say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.
