الأمثال 19

١ 1 الْفَقِيرُ السَّالِكُ بِكَمَالِهِ خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْجَاهِلِ الْمُخَاتِلِ.

The folly of a man spoils his ways: and he blames God in his heart.

٢ 2 لَا يَجْدُرُ بِالْمَرْءِ أَنْ يَخْلُوَ مِنَ الْمَعْرِفَةِ، وَمَنْ يَتَعَجَّلِ الأُمُورَ يُخْطِئِ الْغَرَضَ.

٣ 3 عِنْدَمَا تُسِيءُ حَمَاقَةُ الإِنْسَانِ إِلَى حَيَاتِهِ، يَسْخَطُ قَلْبُهُ عَلَى اللهِ.

٤ 4 الْغَنِيُّ يَجْتَذِبُ كَثْرَةً مِنَ الأَصْدِقَاءِ، أَمَّا الْفَقِيرُ فَيَهْجُرُهُ خَلِيلُهُ.

Wealth acquires many friends; but the poor is deserted even of the friend he has.

٥ 5 شَاهِدُ الزُّورِ لَا يَنْجُو مِنَ الْعِقَابِ، وَنَافِثُ الْكَذِبِ لَا يُفْلِتُ مِنَ الْقِصَاصِ.

A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that accuses unjustly shall not escape.

٦ 6 كَثِيرُونَ يَتَمَلَّقُونَ صَاحِبَ النُّفُوذِ، وَالْكُلُّ صَاحِبٌ لِلَّذِي يُغْدِقُ الْعَطَايَا.

Many court the favour of kings; but every bad man becomes a reproach to [another] man.

٧ 7 جَمِيعُ إخْوَةِ الْفَقِيرِ يَمْقُتُونَهُ، فَمَا أَحْرَى أَنْ يَتَهَرَّبَ مِنْهُ أَصْدِقَاؤُهُ؛ يُلاحِقُهُمْ بِتَوَسُّلاتِهِ وَلا يَجِدُ لَهُمْ أَثَراً.

Every one who hates [his] poor brother shall also be far from friendship. Good understanding will draw near to them that know it, and a sensible man will find it. He that does much harm perfects mischief; and he that used provoking words shall not escape.

٨ 8 مَنِ اقْتَنَى حِكْمَةً أَحَبَّ نَفْسَهُ، وَمَنِ ادَّخَرَ الْفَهْمَ يَلْقَى خَيْراً.

He that procures wisdom loves himself; and he that keeps wisdom shall find good.

٩ 9 شَاهِدُ الزُّورِ لَا يُفْلِتُ مِنَ الْعِقَابِ، وَنَافِثُ الأَكَاذِيبِ يَهْلِكُ.

A false witness shall not be unpunished; and whosoever shall kindle mischief shall perish by it.

١٠ 10 لَا يَلِيقُ التَّنَعُّمُ بِالْجَاهِلِ، فَكَمْ بِالْحَرِيِّ أَنْ يَتَسَلَّطَ عَلَى الرُّؤَسَاءِ؟

Delight does not suit a fool, nor [is it seemly] if a servant should begin to rule with haughtiness.

١١ 11 تَعَقُّلُ الإِنْسَانِ يَكْبَحُ غَضَبَهُ، وَبَهَاؤُهُ فِي الْعَفْوِ عَنِ الْخَطَأِ.

A merciful man is long-suffering; and his triumph overtakes transgressors.

١٢ 12 حَنَقُ الْمَلِكِ كَزَمْجَرَةِ الأَسَدِ، وَرِضَاهُ كَالطَّلِّ عَلَى الْعُشْبِ.

The threatening of a king is like the roaring of a lion; but as dew on the grass, so is his favour.

١٣ 13 الابْنُ الْجَاهِلُ مَدْعَاةُ خَرَابٍ لأَبِيهِ، وَمُخَاصَمَاتُ الزَّوْجَةِ كَنَقْرِ قَطَرَاتِ الْمَطَرِ الْمُتَتَابِعَةِ،

A foolish son is a disgrace to his father: vows [paid out] of the hire of a harlot are not pure.

١٤ 14 الْبَيْتُ وَالثَّرْوَةُ مِيَراثٌ مِنَ الآبَاءِ، أَمَّا الزَّوْجَةُ الْعَاقِلَةُ فَهِيَ مِنْ عِنْدِ الرَّبِّ.

Fathers divide house and substance to [their] children: but a wife is suited to a man by the Lord.

١٥ 15 الْكَسَلُ يُغْرِقُ فِي سُبَاتٍ عَمِيقٍ، وَالنَّفْسُ الْمُتَقَاعِسَةُ تُقَاسِي مِنَ الْجُوعِ.

Cowardice possesses the effeminate [man]; and the soul of the sluggard shall hunger.

١٦ 16 مَنْ يُطِعْ الْوَصِيَّةَ يَصُنْ نَفْسَهُ، وَالْمُتَهَاوِنُ فِي تَصَرُّفَاتِهِ يَلْقَى الْمَوْتَ.

He that keeps the commandment keeps his own soul; but he that despises his ways shall perish.

١٧ 17 مَنْ يَرْحَمْ الْفَقِيرَ يُقْرِضْ الرَّبَّ، وَيُكَافِئْهُ الرَّبُّ عَلَى حُسْنِ صَنِيعِهِ.

He that has pity on the poor lends to the Lord; and he will recompense to him according to his gift.

١٨ 18 أَدِّبِ ابْنَكَ مَادَامَ فِي ذَلِكَ رَجَاءٌ، وَلا تَحْمِلْ نَفْسَكَ عَلَى قَتْلِهِ.

Chasten thy son, for so he shall be hopeful; and be not exalted in thy soul to haughtiness.

١٩ 19 الْجَامِحُ الْغَضَبِ يَدْفَعُ ثَمَنَ جُمُوحِهِ، وَإِنْ كَبَحْتَهُ أَوِ اعْتَرَضْتَهُ فَإِنَّكَ تَزِيدُهُ سُوءاً

A malicious man shall be severely punished, and if he commit injury, he shall also lose his life.

٢٠ 20 اسْتَمِعْ إِلَى الْمَشُورَةِ، وَاقْبَلِ التَّأْدِيبَ، فَتَكْتَسِبَ حِكْمَةً بَقِيَّةَ حَيَاتِكَ.

Hear, son, the instruction of thy father, that thou mayest be wise at thy latter end.

٢١ 21 كَثِيرَةٌ هِيَ نَوَايَا قَلْبِ الإِنْسَانِ، إِنَّمَا مَشُورَةُ الرَّبِّ هِيَ الَّتِي تَسُودُ.

[There are] many thoughts in a man's heart; but the counsel of the Lord abides for ever.

٢٢ 22 حُسْنُ الْجَمِيلِ زِينَةُ النَّاسِ، وَالْفَقِيرُ خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْغَنِيِّ الْكَاذِبِ.

Mercy is a fruit to a man: and a poor man is better than a rich liar.

٢٣ 23 تَقْوَى الرَّبِّ تُفْضِي إِلَى الْحَيَاةِ، وَصَاحِبُهَا يَبِيتُ مُطْمَئِنّاً وَلا يَنَالُهُ شَرٌّ.

The fear of the Lord is life to a man: and he shall lodge without fear in places where knowledge is not seen.

٢٤ 24 الْكَسُولُ يَدْفِنُ يَدَهُ فِي صَحْنِهِ وَلا يَرُدُّهَا حَتَّى إِلَى فَمِهِ.

He that unjustly hides his hands in his bosom, will not even [bring] them up to his mouth.

٢٥ 25 اضْرِبِ الْمُسْتَهْزِئَ فَيَتَعَقَّلَ الأَحْمَقُ، وَوَبِّخِ العَاقِلَ فَيَكْتَسِبَ فَهْماً.

When a pestilent character is scourged, a simple man is made wiser: and if thou reprove a wise man, he will understand discretion.

٢٦ 26 مَنْ يُخَرِّبْ حَيَاةَ أَبِيهِ، وَيُشَرِّدْ أُمَّهُ فَهُوَ ابْنٌ يَجْلِبُ الْخِزْيَ وَالْعَارَ.

He that dishonours his father, and drives away his mother, shall be disgraced and shall be exposed to reproach.

٢٧ 27 كُفَّ يَا ابْنِي عَنِ الإِصْغَاءِ إِلَى التَّعْلِيمِ الَّذِي يُضِلُّكَ عَنْ كَلِمَاتِ الْمَعْرِفَةِ.

A son who ceases to attend to the instruction of a father will cherish evil designs.

٢٨ 28 الشَّاهِدُ الْمُنَافِقُ يَسْخَرُ مِنَ الْقَضَاءِ، وَفَمُ الأَشْرَارِ يَبْتَلِعُ الإِثْمَ.

He that becomes surety for a foolish child will despise the ordinance: and the mouth of ungodly men shall drink down judgment.

٢٩ 29 الْعِقَابُ مُعَدٌّ لِلسَّاخِرِينَ، وَجَلْدُ السِّيَاطِ مُهَيَّأٌ لِظُهُورِ الْجُهَّالِ.

Scourges are preparing for the intemperate, and punishments likewise for fools.
