الجامِعَة 7

١ 1 الصِّيتُ الْحَسَنُ خَيْرٌ مِنَ الطِّيبِ، وَيَوْمُ الْوَفَاةِ أَفْضَلُ مِنْ يَوْمِ الْوِلادَةِ.

A good name is better than precious perfume, and the day of one's death than the day of his birth.

٢ 2 الذَّهَابُ إِلَى بَيْتِ النَّوْحِ خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْحُضُورِ إِلَى بَيْتِ الْوَلِيمَةِ، لأَنَّ الْمَوْتَ هُوَ مَصِيرُ كُلِّ إِنْسَانٍ. وَهَذَا مَا يَحْتَفِظُ بِهِ الْحَيُّ فِي قَلْبِهِ.

It is better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting; for that is the end of all men; and the living will lay it to heart.

٣ 3 الْحُزْنُ خَيْرٌ مِنَ الضَّحِكِ، لأَنَّهُ بِكَآبَةِ الْوَجْهِ يُصْلَحُ الْقَلْبُ.

Sorrow is better than laughter; for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better.

٤ 4 قَلْبُ الْحُكَمَاءِ فِي بَيْتِ النَّوْحِ، أَمَّا قُلُوبُ الْجُهَّالِ فَفِي بَيْتِ اللَّذَّةِ.

The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.

٥ 5 الاسْتِمَاعُ إِلَى زَجْرِ الْحَكِيمِ خَيْرٌ مِنَ الإِصْغَاءِ إِلَى غِنَاءِ الْجُهَّالِ.

It is better for a man to hear the rebuke of the wise than to hear the song of fools.

٦ 6 لأَنَّ ضَحِكَ الْجُهَّالِ كَقَرْقَعَةِ الشَّوْكِ تَحْتَ الْقِدْرِ، وَهَذَا أَيْضاً بَاطِلٌ.

For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of a fool. This also is vanity.

٧ 7 الظُّلْمُ يَجْعَلُ الْحَكِيمَ أَحْمَقَ، وَالرِّشْوَةُ تُفْسِدُ الْقَلْبَ.

Surely the gain of oppression maketh a wise man foolish, and a gift corrupteth the understanding.

٨ 8 نِهَايَةُ أَمْرٍ خَيْرٌ مِنْ بِدَايَتِهِ، وَالصَّبْرُ خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْعَجْرَفَةِ.

Better is the end of a thing than its beginning. Better is the patient in spirit than the proud in spirit.

٩ 9 لَا يَسْتَسْلِمْ قَلْبُكَ سَرِيعاً لِلْغَضَبِ، لأَنَّ الْغَضَبَ يَسْتَقِرُّ فِي صُدُورِ الْجُهَّالِ.

Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry; for anger resteth in the bosom of fools.

١٠ 10 لَا تَقُلْ: كَيْفَ حَدَثَ أَنَّ الأَيَّامَ الْمَاضِيَةَ كَانَتْ خَيْراً مِنْ هَذِهِ الأَيَّامِ؟ لأَنَّ سُؤَالَكَ هَذَا لَا يَنِمُّ عَنْ حِكْمَةٍ.

Say not, “What is the cause that the former days were better than these?” For thou dost not inquire wisely concerning this.

١١ 11 الْحِكْمَةُ مَعَ الْمِيرَاثِ صَالِحَةٌ وَذَاتُ مَنْفَعَةٍ لِلأَحْيَاءِ.

Wisdom is as good as an estate? yea, it hath an advantage over it for them that see the sun.

١٢ 12 الَّذِي يَسْتَظِلُّ بِالْحِكْمَةِ كَمَنْ يَسْتَظِلُّ بِالْفِضَّةِ، إِلّا أَنَّ لِمَعْرِفَةِ الْحِكْمَةِ فَضْلاً، وَهُوَ أَنَّهَا تَحْفَظُ حَيَاةَ أَصْحَابِهَا.

For wisdom is a defence, and money is a defence. But knowledge hath the advantage. For wisdom giveth life to them that have it.

١٣ 13 تَأَمَّلْ فِي عَمَلِ اللهِ، مَنْ يَقْدِرُ أَنْ يُقَوِّمَ مَا يُعَوِّجُهُ؟

Consider the work of God! Who can make straight that which he hath made crooked?

١٤ 14 افْرَحْ فِي يَوْمِ السَّرَّاءِ، وَاعْتَبِرْ فِي يَوْمِ الضَّرَّاءِ. إِنَّ الرَّبَّ قَدْ جَعَلَ السَّرَّاءَ مَعَ الضَّرَّاءِ، لِئَلّا يَكْتَشِفَ الإِنْسَانُ شَيْئاً مِمَّا يَحْدُثُ بَعْدَ مَوْتِهِ.

In the day of prosperity be joyful; but look for a day of adversity! for this also, as well as the other, hath God appointed, to the end that a man should not find out any thing which shall be after him.

١٥ 15 لَقَدْ شَاهَدْتُ هَذِهِ جَمِيعَهَا فِي أَيَّامِ أَبَاطِيلِي: رُبَّ صِدِّيقٍ يَهْلِكُ فِي بِرِّهِ، وَمُنَافِقٍ تَطُولُ أَيَّامُهُ فِي شَرِّهِ.

All this have I seen in my days of vanity. There are righteous men who perish in their righteousness, and there are wicked men who live long in their wickedness.

١٦ 16 لَا تُغَالِ فِي بِرِّكَ وَلا تُبَالِغْ فِي حِكْمَتِكَ، إِذْ لِمَاذَا تُهْلِكُ نَفْسَكَ؟

Be not righteous overmuch; neither make thyself over-wise! Why shouldest thou destroy thyself?

١٧ 17 لَا تُفْرِطْ فِي شَرِّكَ وَلا تَكُنْ أَحْمَقَ. لِمَاذَا تَمُوتُ قَبْلَ أَوَانِكَ؟

Be not overmuch wicked; neither be thou a fool! Why shouldst thou die before thy time?

١٨ 18 حَسَنٌ أَنْ تَتَشَبَّثَ بِهَذَا وَأَنْ لَا تُفَرِّطَ فِي ذَاكَ، لأَنَّ مُتَّقِيَ اللهِ يَتَفَادَى التَّطَرُّفَ فِي كِلَيْهِمَا.

It is good that thou shouldst take hold of this; yea, also, from that withdraw not thy hand. For he that feareth God shall escape all those things.

١٩ 19 تَدْعَمُ الْحِكْمَةُ الْحَكِيمَ بِالْقُوَّةِ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ عَشَرَةِ مُتَسَلِّطِينَ فِي الْمَدِينَةِ.

Wisdom strengtheneth the wise more than ten mighty men who are in the city.

٢٠ 20 لَيْسَ مِنْ صِدِّيقٍ عَلَى وَجْهِ الأَرْضِ يَصْنَعُ خَيْراً وَلا يُخْطِئُ.

Truly there is not a righteous man upon the earth who doeth good and sinneth not.

٢١ 21 لَا تَكْتَرِثْ لِكُلِّ كَلامٍ يُقَالُ لِئَلّا تَسْمَعَ عَبْدَكَ يَشْتِمُكَ.

Give no heed to all the words which are spoken, lest thou hear thy servant curse thee!

٢٢ 22 لأَنَّكَ تُدْرِكُ فِي قَرَارَةِ نَفْسِكَ أَنَّكَ كَثِيراً مَا لَعَنْتَ غَيْرَكَ.

For many times thine own heart knoweth also that even thou thyself hast cursed others.

٢٣ 23 كُلُّ ذَلِكَ اخْتَبَرْتُهُ بِالْحِكْمَةِ وَقُلْتُ: سَأَكُونُ حَكِيماً، وَلَكِنَّهَا كَانَتْ بَعِيدَةً عَنِّي.

All this have I tried by wisdom. I said, “I will be wise;” but it was far from me.

٢٤ 24 مَا هُوَ بَعِيدٌ، بَعِيدٌ جِدّاً، وَمَا هُوَ عَمِيقٌ، عَمِيقٌ جِدّاً. وَمَنْ لِي بِمَنْ يَكْتَشِفُهُ؟

That which is far off and exceeding deep, who can find it out?

٢٥ 25 فَتَفَحَّصْتُ قَلْبِي لأَعْلَمَ وَأَبْحَثَ وَأَنْشُدَ الْحِكْمَةَ وَأَلْتَمِسَ جَوَاهِرَ الأَشْيَاءِ وَأَعْرِفَ جَهَالَةَ الشَّرِّ، وَحَمَاقَةَ الْجُنُونِ.

I applied my mind earnestly to know, and to search, and to seek out wisdom and intelligence, and to know wickedness and folly, yea, foolishness and madness.

٢٦ 26 فَوَجَدْتُ أَنَّ الْمَرْأَةَ الَّتِي قَلْبُهَا أَشْرَاكٌ وَشِبَاكٌ، وَيَدَاهَا قُيُودٌ، هِيَ أَمَرُّ مِنَ الْمَوْتِ، وَمَنْ يُرْضِي اللهَ يَهْرُبُ مِنْهَا، أَمَّا الْخَاطِئُ فَيَقَعُ فِي أَشْرَاكِهَا.

And I found more bitter than death the woman whose heart is snares and nets, and her hands bands. He that pleaseth God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be caught by her.

٢٧ 27 وَيَقُولُ الْجَامِعَةُ: إِلَيْكَ مَا وَجَدْتُهُ: أَضِفْ وَاحِداً إِلَى وَاحِدٍ لِتَكْتَشِفَ حَاصِلَ الأَشْيَاءِ

Behold, this have I found, saith the Preacher, putting one thing to another to find knowledge.

٢٨ 28 الَّتِي مَا بَرِحَتْ نَفْسِي تَبْحَثُ عَنْهَا مِنْ غَيْرِ جَدْوَى: وَجَدْتُ صِدِّيقاً وَاحِداً بَيْنَ أَلْفِ رَجُلٍ، وَعَلَى امْرَأَةٍ وَاحِدَةٍ (صِدِّيقَةٍ) بَيْنَ الأَلْفِ لَمْ أَعْثُرْ.

That which my soul hath hitherto sought, and I have not found, is this: a man among a thousand I have found, but a woman among a thousand have I not found.

٢٩ 29 بَلْ هَذَا مَا وَجَدْتُهُ: إِنَّ اللهَ قَدْ صَنَعَ الْبَشَرَ مُسْتَقِيمِينَ، أَمَّا هُمْ فَانْطَلَقُوا بَاحِثِينَ عَنْ مُسْتَحْدَثَاتٍ كَثِيرَةٍ!

Lo, this only have I found, that God made man upright, but they have sought out many devices.
