أعمال 22

١ 1 «أَيُّهَا الإِخْوَةُ وَالآبَاءُ، اسْمَعُوا الآنَ دِفَاعِي عَنْ نَفْسِي».

"Brethren and fathers," he said, "listen to my defence which I now make before you."

٢ 2 فَلَمَّا سَمِعُوهُ يُخَاطِبُهُمْ بِاللُّغَةِ الْعِبْرِيَّةِ ازْدَادُوا هُدُوءاً فَقَالَ:

And on hearing him address them in Hebrew, they kept all the more quiet; and he said,

٣ 3 «أَنَا رَجُلٌ يَهُودِيٌّ، وُلِدْتُ فِي طَرْسُوسَ الْوَاقِعَةِ فِي مُقَاطَعَةِ كِيلِيكِيَّةَ، وَلَكِنِّي نَشَأْتُ فِي هذِهِ الْمَدِينَةِ وَتَعَلَّمْتُ عِنْدَ قَدَمَيْ غَمَالَائِيلَ التَّرْبِيَةَ الْمُوَافِقَةَ تَمَاماً لِشَرِيعَةِ آبَائِنَا. وَكُنْتُ غَيُوراً فِي أُمُورِ اللهِ، مِثْلَكُمْ جَمِيعاً الْيَوْمَ.

"I am a Jew, born at Tarsus in Cilicia, but brought up in this city. I was carefully trained at the feet of Gamaliel in the Law of our forefathers, and, like all of you to-day, was zealous for God.

٤ 4 فَاضْطَهَدْتُ هَذَا الطَّرِيقَ حَتَّى الْمَوْتِ، فَكُنْتُ أَعْتَقِلُ أَتْبَاعَهُ مِنَ الرِّجَالِ وَالنِّسَاءِ، وَأَزُجُّ بِهِمْ فِي السُّجُونِ.

I persecuted to death this new faith, continually binding both men and women and throwing them into prison;

٥ 5 وَيَشْهَدُ رَئِيسُ الْكَهَنَةِ وَمَجْلِسُ الشُّيُوخِ عَلَى صِدْقِ كَلامِي هَذَا. فَقَدْ أَخَذْتُ مِنْهُمْ رَسَائِلَ إِلَى إِخْوَانِهِمْ فِي دِمَشْقَ لِيُعَاوِنُونِي فِي الْقَبْضِ عَلَى الَّذِينَ هُنَاكَ، لأَسُوقَهُمْ إِلَى أُورُشَلِيمَ فَيَنَالُوا عِقَابَهُمْ.

as the High Priest also and all the Elders can bear me witness. It was, too, from them that I received letters to the brethren in Damascus, and I was already on my way to Damascus, intending to bring those also who had fled there, in chains to Jerusalem, to be punished.

٦ 6 وَلَمَّا وَصَلْتُ إِلَى مَقْرُبَةٍ مِنْ دِمَشْقَ، وَكَانَ الْوَقْتُ نَحْوَ الظُّهْرِ، أَضَاءَ حَوْلِي فَجْأَةً نُورٌ بَاهِرٌ،

"But on my way, when I was now not far from Damascus, about noon a sudden blaze of light from Heaven shone round me.

٧ 7 فَوَقَعْتُ عَلَى الأَرْضِ، وَسَمِعْتُ صَوْتاً يَقُولُ لِي: شَاوُلُ، شَاوُلُ، لِمَاذَا تَضْطَهِدُنِي؟

I fell to the ground and heard a voice say to me, "'Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?'

٨ 8 فَأَجَبْتُ: مَنْ أَنْتَ يَا سَيِّدُ؟ فَقَالَ: أَنَا يَسُوعُ النَّاصِرِيُّ الَّذِي أَنْتَ تَضْطَهِدُهُ.

"'Who art thou, Lord?' I asked. "'I am Jesus, the Nazarene,' He replied, 'whom you are persecuting.'

٩ 9 وَقَدْ رَأَى مُرَافِقِيَّ النُّورَ، وَلَكِنَّهُمْ لَمْ يَسْمَعُوا صَوْتَ مُخَاطِبِي.

"Now the men who were with me, though they saw the light, did not hear the words of Him who spoke to me.

١٠ 10 فَسَأَلْتُ: مَاذَا أَفْعَلُ يَا رَبُّ؟ فَأَجَابَنِي الرَّبُّ: قُمْ وَادْخُلْ دِمَشْقَ، وَهُنَاكَ يُقَالُ لَكَ مَا يَجِبُ عَلَيْكَ أَنْ تَفْعَلَهُ.

And I asked, "'What am I to do, Lord?' "And the Lord said to me, "'Rise, and go into Damascus. There you shall be told of all that has been appointed for you to do.'

١١ 11 وَاقْتَادَنِي مُرَافِقِيَّ بِيَدِي حَتَّى أَوْصَلُونِي إِلَى دِمَشْقَ، لأَنِّي لَمْ أَكُنْ أُبْصِرُ بِسَبَبِ شِدَّةِ ذَلِكَ النُّورِ الْبَاهِرِ.

"And as I could not see because the light had been so dazzling, those who were with me had to lead me by the arm, and so I came to Damascus.

١٢ 12 وَكَانَ فِي دِمَشْقَ رَجُلٌ اسْمُهُ حَنَانِيَّا، تَقِيٌّ كَمَا تَقْضِي الشَّرِيعَةُ، يَشْهَدُ لَهُ يَهُودُ دِمَشْقَ جَمِيعاً شَهَادَةً حَسَنَةً.

"And a certain Ananias, a pious man who obeyed the Law and bore a good character with all the Jews of the city,

١٣ 13 جَاءَ إِلَيَّ وَوَقَفَ وَقَالَ: أَيُّهَا الأَخُ شَاوُلُ، أَبْصِرْ. فَعَادَ إِلَيَّ بَصَرِي حَالاً، وَرَأَيْتُهُ أَمَامِي،

came to me and standing at my side said, "'Brother Saul, recover your sight.' "I instantly regained my sight and looked up at him.

١٤ 14 فَقَالَ: إِلهُ آبَائِنَا اخْتَارَكَ مُسْبَقاً لِتَعْرِفَ إِرَادَتَهُ، وَتَرَى الْبَارَّ وَتَسْمَعَ صَوْتاً مِنْ فَمِهِ.

Then he said, 'The God of our forefathers has appointed you to know His will, and to see the righteous One and hear Him speak.

١٥ 15 فَإِنَّكَ سَتَكُونُ شَاهِداً لَهُ، أَمَامَ جَمِيعِ النَّاسِ، بِمَا رَأَيْتَ وَسَمِعْتَ.

For you shall be a witness for Him, to all men, of what you have seen and heard.

١٦ 16 وَالآنَ لِمَاذَا تُبْطِئُ؟ قُمْ تَعَمَّدْ وَاغْتَسِلْ مِنْ خَطَايَاكَ، دَاعِياً بِاسْمِ الرَّبِّ.

And now why delay? Rise, get yourself baptized, and wash off your sins, calling upon His name.'

١٧ 17 بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ رَجَعْتُ إِلَى أُورُشَلِيمَ. وَبَيْنَمَا كُنْتُ أُصَلِّي فِي الْهَيْكَلِ غِبْتُ عَنِ الْوَعْيِ،

"After my return to Jerusalem, and while praying in the Temple, I fell into a trance.

١٨ 18 فَرَأَيْتُ الرَّبَّ يَقُولُ لِي: عَجِّلْ وَاتْرُكْ أُورُشَلِيمَ بِسُرْعَةٍ، لأَنَّ أَهْلَهَا يَرْفُضُونَ أَنْ تَشْهَدَ لِي فِيهَا.

I saw Jesus, and He said to me, "'Make haste and leave Jerusalem quickly, because they will not accept your testimony about Me.'

١٩ 19 فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَبُّ، إِنَّهُمْ يَعْرِفُونَ أَنِّي كُنْتُ أَبْحَثُ فِي الْمَجَامِعِ عَنِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ بِكَ، لأَسْجِنَهُمْ وَأَجْلِدَهُمْ.

"'Lord,' I replied, 'they themselves well know how active I was in imprisoning, and in flogging in synagogue after synagogue those who believe in Thee;

٢٠ 20 وَكُنْتُ حَاضِراً عِنْدَمَا قُتِلَ شَهِيدُكَ اسْتِفَانُوسُ، وَكُنْتُ رَاضِياً بِقَتْلِهِ، وَحَارِساً لِثِيَابِ قَاتِلِيهِ.

and when they were shedding the blood of Stephen, Thy witness, I was standing by, fully approving of it, and I held the clothes of those who were killing him.'

٢١ 21 وَلَكِنَّهُ قَالَ لِي: اذْهَبْ، سَأُرْسِلُكَ بَعِيداً إِلَى الأُمَمِ!»

"'Go,' He replied; 'I will send you as an Apostle to nations far away.'"

٢٢ 22 ظَلَّ الْمُجْتَمِعُونَ يُصْغُونَ حَتَّى وَصَلَ بُولُسُ إِلَى ذِكْرِ الأُمَمِ، فَصَرَخُوا بِقَائِدِ الْكَتِيبَةِ: «انْزِعْ هَذَا الرَّجُلَ مِنَ الأَرْضِ! إِنَّهُ لَا يَسْتَحِقُّ الْحَيَاةَ!»

Until they heard this last statement the people listened to Paul, but now with a roar of disapproval they cried out, "Away with such a fellow from the earth! He ought not to be allowed to live."

٢٣ 23 ثُمَّ أَخَذُوا يَصِيحُونَ وَيُلَوِّحُونَ بِثِيَابِهِمْ، وَيُذَرُّونَ الْغُبَارَ فِي الْهَوَاءِ.

And when they continued their furious shouts, throwing their clothes into the air and flinging dust about,

٢٤ 24 فَأَمَرَ الْقَائِدُ جُنُودَهُ أَنْ يُدْخِلُوا بُولُسَ إِلَى الْمُعَسْكَرِ وَأَنْ يَسْتَجْوِبُوهُ تَحْتَ جَلْدِ السِّيَاطِ لِيَعْرِفَ سَبَبَ الهُتَافَاتِ الصَّاخِبَةِ ضِدَّهُ.

the Tribune ordered him to be brought into the barracks, and be examined by flogging, in order to ascertain the reason why they thus cried out against him.

٢٥ 25 فَلَمَّا رَبَطَهُ الْجُنُودُ لِيَجْلِدُوهُ قَالَ لِقَائِدِ الْمِئَةِ الَّذِي كَانَ وَاقِفاً بِقُرْبِهِ: «أَيَسْمَحُ لَكُمُ الْقَانُونُ بِجَلْدِ مُوَاطِنٍ رُومَانِيٍّ قَبْلَ مُحَاكَمَتِهِ؟»

But, when they had tied him up with the straps, Paul said to the Captain who stood by, "Does the Law permit you to flog a Roman citizen--and one too who is uncondemned?"

٢٦ 26 فَمَا إِنْ سَمِعَ الضَّابِطُ ذَلِكَ حَتَّى ذَهَبَ إِلَى الْقَائِدِ وَأَخْبَرَهُ بِالأَمْرِ، وَقَالَ: «أَتَعْلَمُ أَيَّةَ مُخَالَفَةٍ كُنَّا سَنَرْتَكِبُ لَوْ جَلَدْنَا هَذَا الرَّجُلَ؟ إِنَّهُ رُومَانِيُّ الْجِنْسِيَّةِ!»

On hearing this question, the Captain went to report the matter to the Tribune. "What are you intending to do?" he said. "This man is a Roman citizen."

٢٧ 27 فَذَهَبَ الْقَائِدُ بِنَفْسِهِ إِلَى بُولُسَ وَسَأَلَهُ: «أَأَنْتَ حَقّاً رُومَانِيٌّ؟» فَأَجَابَ: «نَعَمْ!»

So the Tribune came to Paul and asked him, "Tell me, are you a Roman citizen?" "Yes," he said.

٢٨ 28 فَقَالَ الْقَائِدُ: «أَنَا دَفَعْتُ مَبْلَغاً كَبِيراً مِنَ الْمَالِ لأَحْصُلَ عَلَى الْجِنْسِيَّةِ الرُّومَانِيَّةِ». فَقَالَ بُولُسُ: «وَأَنَا حَاصِلٌ عَلَيْهَا بِالْوِلادَةِ!»

"I paid a large sum for my citizenship," said the Tribune. "But I was born free," said Paul.

٢٩ 29 وَفِي الْحَالِ ابْتَعَدَ عَنْهُ الْجُنُودُ الْمُكَلَّفُونَ بِاسْتِجْوَابِهِ تَحْتَ جَلْدِ السِّيَاطِ، وَوَقَعَ الْخَوْفُ فِي نَفْسِ الْقَائِدِ مِنْ عَاقِبَةِ تَقْيِيدِهِ بِالسَّلاسِلِ، بَعْدَمَا تَحَقَّقَ أَنَّهُ رُومَانِيٌّ.

So the men who had been on the point of putting him under torture immediately left him. And the Tribune, too, was frightened when he learnt that Paul was a Roman citizen, for he had had him bound.

٣٠ 30 وَفِي الْيَوْمِ التَّالِي أَرَادَ الْقَائِدُ أَنْ يَنْظُرَ فِي حَقِيقَةِ التُّهْمَةِ الَّتِي وَجَّهَهَا الْيَهُودُ إِلَى بُولُسَ، فَفَكَّ قُيُودَهُ، وَأَمَرَ بِإِحْضَارِ رُؤَسَاءِ الْكَهَنَةِ وَأَعْضَاءِ الْمَجْلِسِ الْيَهُودِيِّ جَمِيعاً، وَاسْتَدْعَى بُولُسَ وَأَوْقَفَهُ أَمَامَهُمْ.

The next day, wishing to know exactly what charge was being brought against him by the Jews, the Tribune ordered his chains to be removed; and, having sent word to the High Priests and all the Sanhedrin to assemble, he brought Paul down and made him stand before them.
