أَمْثَالٌ 4

١ 1 اِسْمَعُوا أَيُّهَا ٱلْبَنُونَ تَأْدِيبَ ٱلْأَبِ، وَٱصْغُوا لِأَجْلِ مَعْرِفَةِ ٱلْفَهْمِ،

Hear, ye sons, the correction of a father, and attend, that ye may know understanding.

٢ 2 لِأَنِّي أُعْطِيكُمْ تَعْلِيمًا صَالِحًا، فَلَا تَتْرُكُوا شَرِيعَتِي.

For, good teaching, have I given you, mine instruction, do not ye forsake.

٣ 3 فَإِنِّي كُنْتُ ٱبْنًا لِأَبِي، غَضًّا وَوَحِيدًا عِنْدَ أُمِّي،

For, a son, became I to my father, tender and most precious in the sight of my mother.

٤ 4 وَكَانَ يُرِينِي وَيَقُولُ لِي: «لِيَضْبِطْ قَلْبُكَ كَلَامِي. ٱحْفَظْ وَصَايَايَ فَتَحْيَا.

So he taught me, and said to me—Let thy heart, lay hold of my words, Keep my commandments and live!

٥ 5 اِقْتَنِ ٱلْحِكْمَةَ. ٱقْتَنِ ٱلْفَهْمَ. لَا تَنْسَ وَلَا تُعْرِضْ عَنْ كَلِمَاتِ فَمِي.

Acquire wisdom, acquire understanding, Do not forget, neither decline thou from the sayings of my mouth.

٦ 6 لَا تَتْرُكْهَا فَتَحْفَظَكَ. أَحْبِبْهَا فَتَصُونَكَ.

Do not forsake her, and she will guard thee, —love her and she will keep thee.

٧ 7 ٱلْحِكْمَةُ هِيَ ٱلرَّأْسُ. فَٱقْتَنِ ٱلْحِكْمَةَ، وَبِكُلِّ مُقْتَنَاكَ ٱقْتَنِ ٱلْفَهْمَ.

The principal thing, is wisdom, acquire thou wisdom, With all thine acquisition, acquire thou understanding.

٨ 8 ٱرْفَعْهَا فَتُعَلِّيَكَ. تُمَجِّدُكَ إِذَا ٱعْتَنَقْتَهَا.

Exalt her, and she will set thee on high, she will bring thee to honour, when thou dost embrace her:

٩ 9 تُعْطِي رَأْسَكَ إِكْلِيلَ نِعْمَةٍ. تَاجَ جَمَالٍ تَمْنَحُكَ».

She will give for thy head, a wreath of beauty, A crown of adorning, will she bestow upon thee.

١٠ 10 اِسْمَعْ يَا ٱبْنِي وَٱقْبَلْ أَقْوَالِي، فَتَكْثُرَ سِنُو حَيَاتِكَ.

Hear, my son, and receive my sayings, and they will multiply to thee the years of life.

١١ 11 أَرَيْتُكَ طَرِيقَ ٱلْحِكْمَةِ. هَدَيْتُكَ سُبُلَ ٱلِٱسْتِقَامَةِ.

In the way of wisdom, have I taught thee, I have guided thee in tracks of uprightness.

١٢ 12 إِذَا سِرْتَ فَلَا تَضِيقُ خَطَوَاتُكَ، وَإِذَا سَعَيْتَ فَلَا تَعْثُرُ.

When thou walkest, thy step shall not be hemmed in, and, if thou runnest, thou shalt not stumble.

١٣ 13 تَمَسَّكْ بِٱلْأَدَبِ، لَا تَرْخِهِ. ٱحْفَظْهُ فَإِنَّهُ هُوَ حَيَاتُكَ.

Take fast hold of correction, let her not go, —keep her, for, she, is thy life.

١٤ 14 لَا تَدْخُلْ فِي سَبِيلِ ٱلْأَشْرَارِ، وَلَا تَسِرْ فِي طَرِيقِ ٱلْأَثَمَةِ.

Upon the path of the lawless, do not thou enter, and do not advance in the way of the wicked:

١٥ 15 تَنَكَّبْ عَنْهُ. لَا تَمُرَّ بِهِ. حِدْ عَنْهُ وَٱعْبُرْ،

Avoid it, do not pass thereon—turn from it, and depart.

١٦ 16 لِأَنَّهُمْ لَا يَنَامُونَ إِنْ لَمْ يَفْعَلُوا سُوءًا، وَيُنْزَعُ نَوْمُهُمْ إِنْ لَمْ يُسْقِطُوا أَحَدًا.

For they sleep not, unless they can do mischief, —They rob themselves of their sleep, if they cannot cause someone to stumble,

١٧ 17 لِأَنَّهُمْ يَطْعَمُونَ خُبْزَ ٱلشَّرِّ، وَيَشْرَبُونَ خَمْرَ ٱلظُّلْمِ.

For they consume bread gotten by lawlessness, and, wine obtained by violence, they drink.

١٨ 18 أَمَّا سَبِيلُ ٱلصِّدِّيقِينَ فَكَنُورٍ مُشْرِقٍ، يَتَزَايَدُ وَيُنِيرُ إِلَى ٱلنَّهَارِ ٱلْكَامِلِ.

But, the path of the righteous, is as the light of dawn, —going on and brightening, unto meridian day.

١٩ 19 أَمَّا طَرِيقُ ٱلْأَشْرَارِ فَكَالظَّلَامِ. لَا يَعْلَمُونَ مَا يَعْثُرُونَ بِهِ.

The way of the lawless, is like darkness, they know not, at what they stumble.

٢٠ 20 يَا ٱبْنِي، أَصْغِ إِلَى كَلَامِي. أَمِلْ أُذُنَكَ إِلَى أَقْوَالِي.

My son, to my words, attend, to my sayings, incline thou thine ear;

٢١ 21 لَا تَبْرَحْ عَنْ عَيْنَيْكَ. اِحْفَظْهَا فِي وَسَطِ قَلْبِكَ.

Let them not depart from thine eyes, keep them in the midst of thy heart;

٢٢ 22 لِأَنَّهَا هِيَ حَيَاةٌ لِلَّذِينَ يَجِدُونَهَا، وَدَوَاءٌ لِكُلِّ ٱلْجَسَدِ.

For, life, they are, to them who find them, —and, to every part of one’s flesh, they bring healing.

٢٣ 23 فَوْقَ كُلِّ تَحَفُّظٍ ٱحْفَظْ قَلْبَكَ، لِأَنَّ مِنْهُ مَخَارِجَ ٱلْحَيَاةِ.

Above all that must be guarded, keep thou thy heart, for, out of it, are the issues of life.

٢٤ 24 ٱنْزِعْ عَنْكَ ٱلْتِوَاءَ ٱلْفَمِ، وَأَبْعِدْ عَنْكَ ٱنْحِرَافَ ٱلشَّفَتَيْنِ.

Remove from thee, perverseness of mouth, and, craftiness of lips, put far from thee.

٢٥ 25 لِتَنْظُرْ عَيْنَاكَ إِلَى قُدَّامِكَ، وَأَجْفَانُكَ إِلَى أَمَامِكَ مُسْتَقِيمًا.

Let, thine eyes, right onward, look, —and, thine eyelashes, point straight before thee.

٢٦ 26 مَهِّدْ سَبِيلَ رِجْلِكَ، فَتَثْبُتَ كُلُّ طُرُقِكَ.

Make level the track of thy foot, that, all thy ways, may be directed aright:

٢٧ 27 لَا تَمِلْ يَمْنَةً وَلَا يَسْرَةً. بَاعِدْ رِجْلَكَ عَنِ ٱلشَّرِّ.

Decline not, to the right hand or to the left, —Turn away thy foot from wickedness.
