أَمْثَالٌ 19

١ 1 ٱلْفَقِيرُ ٱلسَّالِكُ بِكَمَالِهِ خَيْرٌ مِنْ مُلْتَوِي ٱلشَّفَتَيْنِ وَهُوَ جَاهِلٌ.

The folly of a man spoils his ways: and he blames God in his heart.

٢ 2 أَيْضًا كَوْنُ ٱلنَّفْسِ بِلَا مَعْرِفَةٍ لَيْسَ حَسَنًا، وَٱلْمُسْتَعْجِلُ بِرِجْلَيْهِ يُخْطِئُ.

٣ 3 حَمَاقَةُ ٱلرَّجُلِ تُعَوِّجُ طَرِيقَهُ، وَعَلَى ٱلرَّبِّ يَحْنَقُ قَلْبُهُ.

٤ 4 اَلْغِنَى يُكْثِرُ ٱلْأَصْحَابَ، وَٱلْفَقِيرُ مُنْفَصِلٌ عَنْ قَرِيبِهِ.

Wealth acquires many friends; but the poor is deserted even of the friend he has.

٥ 5 شَاهِدُ ٱلزُّورِ لَا يَتَبَرَّأُ، وَٱلْمُتَكَلِّمُ بِٱلْأَكَاذِيبِ لَا يَنْجُو.

A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that accuses unjustly shall not escape.

٦ 6 كَثِيرُونَ يَسْتَعْطِفُونَ وَجْهَ ٱلشَّرِيفِ، وَكُلٌّ صَاحِبٌ لِذِي ٱلْعَطَايَا.

Many court the favour of kings; but every bad man becomes a reproach to [another] man.

٧ 7 كُلُّ إِخْوَةِ ٱلْفَقِيرِ يُبْغِضُونَهُ، فَكَمْ بِٱلْحَرِيِّ أَصْدِقَاؤُهُ يَبْتَعِدُونَ عَنْهُ! مَنْ يَتْبَعُ أَقْوَالًا فَهِيَ لَهُ.

Every one who hates [his] poor brother shall also be far from friendship. Good understanding will draw near to them that know it, and a sensible man will find it. He that does much harm perfects mischief; and he that used provoking words shall not escape.

٨ 8 اَلْمُقْتَنِي ٱلْحِكْمَةَ يُحِبُّ نَفْسَهُ. ٱلْحَافِظُ ٱلْفَهْمِ يَجِدُ خَيْرًا.

He that procures wisdom loves himself; and he that keeps wisdom shall find good.

٩ 9 شَاهِدُ ٱلزُّورِ لَا يَتَبَرَّأُ، وَٱلْمُتَكَلِّمُ بِٱلْأَكَاذِيبِ يَهْلِكُ.

A false witness shall not be unpunished; and whosoever shall kindle mischief shall perish by it.

١٠ 10 اَلتَّنَعُّمُ لَا يَلِيقُ بِٱلْجَاهِلِ. كَمْ بِٱلْأَوْلَى لَا يَلِيقُ بِٱلْعَبْدِ أَنْ يَتَسَلَّطَ عَلَى ٱلرُّؤَسَاءِ!

Delight does not suit a fool, nor [is it seemly] if a servant should begin to rule with haughtiness.

١١ 11 تَعَقُّلُ ٱلْإِنْسَانِ يُبْطِئُ غَضَبَهُ، وَفَخْرُهُ ٱلصَّفْحُ عَنْ مَعْصِيَةٍ.

A merciful man is long-suffering; and his triumph overtakes transgressors.

١٢ 12 كَزَمْجَرَةِ ٱلْأَسَدِ حَنَقُ ٱلْمَلِكِ، وَكَالطَّلِّ عَلَى ٱلْعُشْبِ رِضْوَانُهُ.

The threatening of a king is like the roaring of a lion; but as dew on the grass, so is his favour.

١٣ 13 اَلِٱبْنُ ٱلْجَاهِلُ مُصِيبَةٌ عَلَى أَبِيهِ، وَمُخَاصَمَاتُ ٱلزَّوْجَةِ كَٱلْوَكْفِ ٱلْمُتَتَابِعِ.

A foolish son is a disgrace to his father: vows [paid out] of the hire of a harlot are not pure.

١٤ 14 اَلْبَيْتُ وَٱلثَّرْوَةُ مِيرَاثٌ مِنَ ٱلْآبَاءِ، أَمَّا ٱلزَّوْجَةُ ٱلْمُتَعَقِّلَةُ فَمِنْ عِنْدِ ٱلرَّبِّ.

Fathers divide house and substance to [their] children: but a wife is suited to a man by the Lord.

١٥ 15 اَلْكَسَلُ يُلْقِي فِي ٱلسُّبَاتِ، وَٱلنَّفْسُ ٱلْمُتَرَاخِيَةُ تَجُوعُ.

Cowardice possesses the effeminate [man]; and the soul of the sluggard shall hunger.

١٦ 16 حَافِظُ ٱلْوَصِيَّةِ حَافِظٌ نَفْسَهُ، وَٱلْمُتَهَاوِنُ بِطُرُقِهِ يَمُوتُ.

He that keeps the commandment keeps his own soul; but he that despises his ways shall perish.

١٧ 17 مَنْ يَرْحَمُ ٱلْفَقِيرَ يُقْرِضُ ٱلرَّبَّ، وَعَنْ مَعْرُوفِهِ يُجَازِيهِ.

He that has pity on the poor lends to the Lord; and he will recompense to him according to his gift.

١٨ 18 أَدِّبِ ٱبْنَكَ لِأَنَّ فِيهِ رَجَاءً، وَلَكِنْ عَلَى إِمَاتَتِهِ لَا تَحْمِلْ نَفْسَكَ.

Chasten thy son, for so he shall be hopeful; and be not exalted in thy soul to haughtiness.

١٩ 19 اَلشَّدِيدُ ٱلْغَضَبِ يَحْمِلُ عُقُوبَةً، لِأَنَّكَ إِذَا نَجَّيْتَهُ فَبَعْدُ تُعِيدُ.

A malicious man shall be severely punished, and if he commit injury, he shall also lose his life.

٢٠ 20 اِسْمَعِ ٱلْمَشُورَةَ وَٱقْبَلِ ٱلتَّأْدِيبَ، لِكَيْ تَكُونَ حَكِيمًا فِي آخِرَتِكَ.

Hear, son, the instruction of thy father, that thou mayest be wise at thy latter end.

٢١ 21 فِي قَلْبِ ٱلْإِنْسَانِ أَفْكَارٌ كَثِيرَةٌ، لَكِنْ مَشُورَةُ ٱلرَّبِّ هِيَ تَثْبُتُ.

[There are] many thoughts in a man's heart; but the counsel of the Lord abides for ever.

٢٢ 22 زِينَةُ ٱلْإِنْسَانِ مَعْرُوفَهُ، وَٱلْفَقِيرُ خَيْرٌ مِنَ ٱلْكَذُوبِ.

Mercy is a fruit to a man: and a poor man is better than a rich liar.

٢٣ 23 مَخَافَةُ ٱلرَّبِّ لِلْحَيَاةِ. يَبِيتُ شَبْعَانَ لَا يَتَعَهَّدُهُ شَرٌّ.

The fear of the Lord is life to a man: and he shall lodge without fear in places where knowledge is not seen.

٢٤ 24 اَلْكَسْلَانُ يُخْفِي يَدَهُ فِي ٱلصَّحْفَةِ، وَأَيْضًا إِلَى فَمِهِ لَا يَرُدُّهَا.

He that unjustly hides his hands in his bosom, will not even [bring] them up to his mouth.

٢٥ 25 اِضْرِبِ ٱلْمُسْتَهْزِئَ فَيَتَذَكَّى ٱلْأَحْمَقُ، وَوَبِّخْ فَهِيمًا فَيَفْهَمَ مَعْرِفَةً.

When a pestilent character is scourged, a simple man is made wiser: and if thou reprove a wise man, he will understand discretion.

٢٦ 26 ٱلْمُخَرِّبُ أَبَاهُ وَٱلطَّارِدُ أُمَّهُ هُوَ ٱبْنٌ مُخْزٍ وَمُخْجِلٌ.

He that dishonours his father, and drives away his mother, shall be disgraced and shall be exposed to reproach.

٢٧ 27 كُفَّ يَا ٱبْنِي عَنِ ٱسْتِمَاعِ ٱلتَّعْلِيمِ لِلضَّلَالَةِ عَنْ كَلَامِ ٱلْمَعْرِفَةِ.

A son who ceases to attend to the instruction of a father will cherish evil designs.

٢٨ 28 اَلشَّاهِدُ ٱللَّئِيمُ يَسْتَهْزِئُ بِٱلْحَقِّ، وَفَمُ ٱلْأَشْرَارِ يَبْلَعُ ٱلْإِثْمَ.

He that becomes surety for a foolish child will despise the ordinance: and the mouth of ungodly men shall drink down judgment.

٢٩ 29 اَلْقِصَاصُ مُعَدٌّ لِلْمُسْتَهْزِئِينَ، وَٱلضَّرْبُ لِظَهْرِ ٱلْجُهَّالِ.

Scourges are preparing for the intemperate, and punishments likewise for fools.
