1 एक ज़ुबूनी है जो मैंने दुनिया में देखी, और वह लोगों पर गिराँ है:
There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, and it is heavy upon men:
2 कोई ऐसा है कि ख़ुदा ने उसे धन दौलत और 'इज़्ज़त बख़्शी है, यहाँ तक कि उसकी किसी चीज़ की जिसे उसका जी चाहता है कमी नहीं; तोभी ख़ुदा ने उसे तौफ़ीक़ नहीं दी कि उससे खाए, बल्कि कोई अजनबी उसे खाता है। ये बेकार और सख़्त बीमारी है।
a man to whom God giveth riches, wealth, and honour, so that he wanteth nothing for his soul of all that he desireth, yet God giveth him not power to eat thereof, but a stranger eateth it; this is vanity, and it is an evil disease.
3 अगर आदमी के सौ फ़र्ज़न्द हों, और वह बहुत बरसों तक जीता रहे यहाँ तक कि उसकी उम्र के दिन बेशुमार हों, लेकिन उसका जी ख़ुशी से सेर न हो और उसका दफ़न न हो, तो मैं कहता हूँ कि वह हमल जो गिर जाए उससे बेहतर है।
If a man beget a hundred children, and live many years, so that the days of his years are many, but his soul have not enough of good, and moreover he have no burial; I say, that an untimely birth is better than he;
4 क्यूँकि वह बतालत के साथ आया और तारीकी में जाता है, और उसका नाम अंधेरे में छिपा रहता है।
for it cometh in vanity, and departeth in darkness, and the name thereof is covered with darkness;
5 उसने सूरज को भी न देखा, न किसी चीज़ को जाना, फिर वह उस दूसरे से ज़्यादा आराम में है।
moreover it hath not seen the sun nor known it; this hath gratification rather than the other;
6 हाँ, अगरचे वह दो हज़ार बरस तक ज़िन्दा रहे और उसे कुछ राहत न हो। क्या सब के सब एक ही जगह नहीं जाते?
yea, though he live a thousand years twice told, and enjoy no good; do not all go to one place?
7 आदमी की सारी मेहनत उसके मुँह के लिए है, तोभी उसका जी नहीं भरता;
All the labour of man is for his mouth, and yet the appetite is not filled.
8 क्यूँकि 'अक़्लमन्द को बेवक़ूफ़ पर क्या फ़ज़ीलत है? और ग़रीब को जी ज़िन्दों के सामने चलना जानता है, क्या हासिल है?
For what advantage hath the wise more than the fool? or the poor man that hath understanding, in walking before the living?
9 आँखों से देख लेना आरज़ू की आवारगी से बेहतर है: ये भी बेकार और हवा की चरान है।
Better is the seeing of the eyes than the wandering of the desire; this also is vanity and a striving after wind.
10 जो कुछ हुआ है उसका नाम ज़माना — ए — क़दीम में रख्खा गया, और ये भी मा'लूम है कि वह इंसान है, और वह उसके साथ जो उससे ताक़तवर है झगड़ नहीं सकता।
Whatsoever cometh into being, the name thereof was given long ago, and it is foreknown what man is; neither can he contend with Him that is mightier than he.
11 चूँकि बहुत सी चीज़ें हैं जिनसे बेकार बहुतायत होती है, फिर इंसान को क्या फ़ायदा है?
Seeing there are many words that increase vanity, what is man the better?
12 क्यूँकि कौन जानता है कि इंसान के लिए उसकी ज़िन्दगी में, या'नी उसकी बेकार ज़िन्दगी के तमाम दिनों में जिनको वह परछाई की तरह बसर करता है, कौन सी चीज़ फ़ाइदेमन्द है? क्यूँकि इंसान को कौन बता सकता है कि उसके बाद दुनिया में क्या वाके़' होगा?
For who knoweth what is good for man in his life, all the days of his vain life which he spendeth as a shadow? for who can tell a man what shall be after him under the sun?
