Éxodo 1
1 Estos son los nombres de los hijos de Israel, que entraron en Egipto con Jacob, cada uno entró con su familia:
Now these are the names of the children of Israel, that came into Egypt with Jacob, every man and his household they came.
2 Rubén, Simeón, Leví, y Judá,
Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah,
3 Isacar, Zabulón, y Ben-jamín,
Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin,
4 Dan, y Neftalí, Gad y Aser.
Dan, and Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.
5 Y todas las almas que salieron del muslo de Jacob fueron setenta. Y José estaba en Egipto.
And all the souls that came out of the loins of Jacob were seventy souls; together with Joseph who was already in Egypt.
6 Y murió José, y todos sus hermanos, y toda aquella generación.
And Joseph died, and all his brothers, and all that generation.
7 Y los hijos de Israel crecieron, y multiplicaron y fueron aumentados y corroborados grandemente, e hinchióse la tierra de ellos.
And the children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and waxed exceedingly mighty; and the land was filled with them.
8 Levantóse entre tanto un nuevo rey sobre Egipto, que no conocía a José, el cual dijo a su pueblo:
Now there rose up a new king over Egypt, who knew not Joseph.
9 He aquí, el pueblo de los hijos de Israel es mayor y más fuerte que nosotros:
And he said unto his people: Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more numerous and mightier than we.
10 Ahora pues, seamos sabios para con él, porque no se multiplique: y acontezca, que viniendo guerra, él también se junte con nuestros enemigos, y pelee contra nosotros, y se vaya de la tierra.
Come, let us deal wisely with them lest they multiply, and it come to pass, that, when there happen to be a war, they join also unto our enemies, and fight against us, and depart out of the land.
11 Entonces pusieron sobre él comisarios de tributos que los molestasen con sus cargas: y edificaron a Faraón las ciudades de los bastimentos, Fitom y Rameses.
And they set over taskmasters, to afflict them with their burdensome labors; and they built treasure cities, for Pharaoh, Pithom and Raamses.
12 Empero cuanto más lo molestaban, tanto más se multiplicaba, y crecía: tanto que ellos se fastidiaban de los hijos de Israel.
But in the measure that they afflicted them, so they multiplied and so they spread out; and they felt abhorrence because of the children of Israel.
13 Y los Egipcios hicieron servir a los hijos de Israel con dureza.
And the Egyptians made the children of Israel to labor with rigor:
14 Y amargaron su vida con servidumbre dura, en barro y ladrillo, y en toda labor del campo, y en todo su servicio en el cual se servían de ellos con dureza.
And they made their lives bitter with hard labor, in mortar, and in bricks, and in all manner of labor in the field; in all their service, wherein they made them labor with rigor.
15 Y habló el rey de Egipto a las parteras de las Hebreas, una de las cuales se llamaba Séfora, y otra Pua, y díjoles:
And the king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, of whom the name of the one was Shiphrah, and the name of the other Puah;
16 Cuando parteareis a las Hebreas, y mirareis los asientos, si fuere hijo, matádle: y si fuere hija, entonces viva.
And he said: When ye do the office of a midwife to the Hebrew women, ye shall look upon the birth; if it be a son, then shall ye kill him; but if it be a daughter, then may she live.
17 Mas las parteras temieron a Dios: y no hicieron como les dijo el rey de Egipto, y daban la vida a los niños.
But the midwives feared God, and they did not as the king of Egypt had commanded them, but saved the men-children alive.
18 Y el rey de Egipto hizo llamar a las parteras, y díjoles: ¿Por qué habéis hecho esto, que habéis dado vida a los niños?
And the king of Egypt called for the midwives, and he said unto them, Why have ye done this thing, and have saved the men-children alive?
19 Y las parteras respondieron a Faraón: Porque las mujeres Hebreas no son como las Egipcias, porque son robustas, y paren antes que la partera venga a ellas.
And the midwives said unto Pharaoh, Because the Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women; for they are lively; ere the midwife cometh in unto them they are delivered.
20 E hizo Dios bien a las parteras; y el pueblo se multiplicó, y se corroboraron en gran manera.
And God dealt well with the midwives; and the people multiplied, and waxed very mighty.
21 Y por haber las parteras temido a Dios, él les hizo casas.
And it came to pass, because the midwives feared God, that he made them houses.
22 Entonces Faraón mandó a todo su pueblo, diciendo: Echád en el río todo hijo que naciere, y a toda hija dad la vida.
And Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, Every son that is born ye shall cast into the river, and every daughter ye shall save alive.
