1 pa"syata vayam ii"svarasya santaanaa iti naamnaakhyaamahe, etena pitaasmabhya. m kiid. rk mahaaprema pradattavaan, kintu sa. msaarasta. m naajaanaat tatkaara. naadasmaan api na jaanaati|
See what great love the Father has given us in naming us the children of God; and such we are. For this reason the world does not see who we are, because it did not see who he was.
2 he priyatamaa. h, idaanii. m vayam ii"svarasya santaanaa aasmahe pa"scaat ki. m bhavi. syaamastad adyaapyaprakaa"sita. m kintu prakaa"sa. m gate vaya. m tasya sad. r"saa bhavi. syaami iti jaaniima. h, yata. h sa yaad. r"so. asti taad. r"so. asmaabhirdar"si. syate|
My loved ones, now we are children of God, and at present it is not clear what we are to be. We are certain that at his revelation we will be like him; for we will see him as he is.
3 tasmin e. saa pratyaa"saa yasya kasyacid bhavati sa sva. m tathaa pavitra. m karoti yathaa sa pavitro. asti|
And everyone who has this hope in him makes himself holy, even as he is holy.
4 ya. h ka"scit paapam aacarati sa vyavasthaala"nghana. m karoti yata. h paapameva vyavasthaala"nghana. m|
Everyone who is a sinner goes against the law, for sin is going against the law.
5 apara. m so. asmaaka. m paapaanyapaharttu. m praakaa"sataitad yuuya. m jaaniitha, paapa nca tasmin na vidyate|
And you have knowledge that he came to take away sin: and in him there is no sin.
6 ya. h ka"scit tasmin ti. s.thati sa paapaacaara. m na karoti ya. h ka"scit paapaacaara. m karoti sa ta. m na d. r.s. tavaan na vaavagatavaan|
Anyone who is in him does no sin; anyone who is a sinner has not seen him and has no knowledge of him.
7 he priyabaalakaa. h, ka"scid yu. smaaka. m bhrama. m na janayet, ya. h ka"scid dharmmaacaara. m karoti sa taad. rg dhaarmmiko bhavati yaad. rk sa dhaammiko. asti|
My little children, let no man take you out of the true way: he who does righteousness is upright, even as he is upright;
8 ya. h paapaacaara. m karoti sa "sayataanaat jaato yata. h "sayataana aadita. h paapaacaarii "sayataanasya karmma. naa. m lopaarthameve"svarasya putra. h praakaa"sata|
The sinner is a child of the Evil One; for the Evil One has been a sinner from the first. And the Son of God was seen on earth so that he might put an end to the works of the Evil One.
9 ya. h ka"scid ii"svaraat jaata. h sa paapaacaara. m na karoti yatastasya viiryya. m tasmin ti. s.thati paapaacaara. m karttu nca na "saknoti yata. h sa ii"svaraat jaata. h|
Anyone who is a child of God does no sin, because he still has God's seed in him; he is not able to be a sinner, because God is his Father.
10 ityanene"svarasya santaanaa. h "sayataanasya ca santaanaa vyaktaa bhavanti| ya. h ka"scid dharmmaacaara. m na karoti sa ii"svaraat jaato nahi ya"sca svabhraatari na priiyate so. apii"svaraat jaato nahi|
In this way it is clear who are the children of God and who are the children of the Evil One; anyone who does not do righteousness or who has no love for his brother, is not a child of God.
11 yatastasya ya aade"sa aadito yu. smaabhi. h "sruta. h sa e. sa eva yad asmaabhi. h paraspara. m prema karttavya. m|
Because this is the word which was given to you from the first, that we are to have love for one another;
12 paapaatmato jaato ya. h kaabil svabhraatara. m hatavaan tatsad. r"sairasmaabhi rna bhavitavya. m| sa kasmaat kaara. naat ta. m hatavaan? tasya karmmaa. ni du. s.taani tadbhraatu"sca karmmaa. ni dharmmaa. nyaasan iti kaara. naat|
Not being of the Evil One like Cain, who put his brother to death. And why did he put him to death? Because his works were evil and his brother's works were good.
13 he mama bhraatara. h, sa. msaaro yadi yu. smaan dve. s.ti tarhi tad aa"scaryya. m na manyadhva. m|
Do not be surprised, my brothers, if the world has no love for you.
14 vaya. m m. rtyum uttiiryya jiivana. m praaptavantastad bhraat. r.su premakara. naat jaaniima. h| bhraatari yo na priiyate sa m. rtyau ti. s.thati|
We are conscious that we have come out of death into life because of our love for the brothers. He who has no love is still in death.
15 ya. h ka"scit svabhraatara. m dve. s.ti sa. m naraghaatii ki ncaanantajiivana. m naraghaatina. h kasyaapyantare naavati. s.thate tad yuuya. m jaaniitha| (aiōnios g166)
Anyone who has hate for his brother is a taker of life, and you may be certain that no taker of life has eternal life in him. (aiōnios g166)
16 asmaaka. m k. rte sa svapraa. naa. mstyaktavaan ityanena vaya. m premnastattvam avagataa. h, apara. m bhraat. r.naa. m k. rte. asmaabhirapi praa. naastyaktavyaa. h|
In this we see what love is, because he gave his life for us; and it is right for us to give our lives for the brothers.
17 saa. msaarikajiivikaapraapto yo jana. h svabhraatara. m diina. m d. r.s. tvaa tasmaat sviiyadayaa. m ru. naddhi tasyaantara ii"svarasya prema katha. m ti. s.thet?
But if a man has this world's goods, and sees that his brother is in need, and keeps his heart shut against his brother, how is it possible for the love of God to be in him?
18 he mama priyabaalakaa. h, vaakyena jihvayaa vaasmaabhi. h prema na karttavya. m kintu kaaryye. na satyatayaa caiva|
My little children, do not let our love be in word and in tongue, but let it be in act and in good faith.
19 etena vaya. m yat satyamatasambandhiiyaastat jaaniimastasya saak. saat svaanta. hkara. naani saantvayitu. m "sak. syaama"sca|
In this way we may be certain that we are true, and may give our heart comfort before him,
20 yato. asmadanta. hkara. na. m yadyasmaan duu. sayati tarhyasmadanta. h kara. naad ii"svaro mahaan sarvvaj na"sca|
When our heart says that we have done wrong; because God is greater than our heart, and has knowledge of all things.
21 he priyatamaa. h, asmadanta. hkara. na. m yadyasmaan na duu. sayati tarhi vayam ii"svarasya saak. saat pratibhaanvitaa bhavaama. h|
My loved ones, if our heart does not say that we have done wrong, we have no fear before him;
22 yacca praarthayaamahe tat tasmaat praapnuma. h, yato vaya. m tasyaaj naa. h paalayaamastasya saak. saat tu. s.tijanakam aacaara. m kurmma"sca|
And he gives us all our requests, because we keep his laws and do the things which are pleasing in his eyes.
23 apara. m tasyeyamaaj naa yad vaya. m putrasya yii"sukhrii. s.tasya naamni vi"svasimastasyaaj naanusaare. na ca paraspara. m prema kurmma. h|
And this is his law, that we have faith in the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love for one another, even as he said to us.
24 ya"sca tasyaaj naa. h paalayati sa tasmin ti. s.thati tasmin so. api ti. s.thati; sa caasmaan yam aatmaana. m dattavaan tasmaat so. asmaasu ti. s.thatiiti jaaniima. h|
He who keeps his laws is in God and God is in him. And the Spirit which he gave us is our witness that he is in us.
