Iona 4
1 Dar aceasta a displăcut foarte mult lui Iona şi s-a mâniat foarte tare.
But this displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was very angry.
2 Şi s-a rugat DOMNULUI şi a spus: Te rog, DOAMNE, nu era aceasta spusa mea, când eram încă în ţara mea? De aceea am fugit înainte la Tarsis, pentru că am ştiut că eşti un Dumnezeu cu har şi milostiv, încet la mânie şi de o mare bunătate şi te pocăieşti de la rău.
And he prayed to Jehovah and said, Ah! Jehovah, was not this what I said, when I was yet in my own country? Therefore I made haste to flee to Tarshish. For I knew that thou art a gracious and merciful God, slow to anger and abundant in mercy, and that thou repentest of a threatened evil.
3 De aceea acum, DOAMNE, te implor, ia viaţa de la mine, pentru că este mai bine pentru mine să mor decât să trăiesc.
And now, O Jehovah, take, I pray thee, my life from me! for it is better for me to die than to live.
4 Atunci DOMNUL a spus: Faci tu bine că te mânii?
And Jehovah said, Is it right that thou shouldst be angry?
5 Astfel Iona a ieşit din cetate şi s-a aşezat în partea de est a cetăţii şi acolo şi-a făcut o colibă şi a stat jos la umbră lângă ea, până când va vedea ce se va întâmpla cu cetatea.
Now Jonah had gone out of the city, and had sat on the east side of the city, and had made himself a booth there, and had sat under it in the shade, till he should see what would become of the city.
6 Şi DOMNUL Dumnezeu a pregătit o plantă şi a făcut-o să se ridice peste Iona, ca să fie o umbră deasupra capului său, ca să îl scape din mâhnirea lui. Astfel Iona s-a veselit cu mare bucurie pentru [acea] plantă.
And God, Jehovah, appointed a gourd; and it grew up over Jonah to be a shadow over his head, to deliver him from his distress. And Jonah was exceedingly glad of the gourd.
7 Dar Dumnezeu a pregătit un vierme când dimineaţa s-a ridicat în ziua următoare şi viermele a lovit planta aşa că aceasta s-a uscat.
But God appointed a worm when the morning rose the next day, and it smote the gourd so that it withered.
8 Şi s-a întâmplat, când soarele a răsărit, că Dumnezeu a pregătit un vânt arzător din est; şi soarele a bătut peste capul lui Iona, încât el a leşinat şi a dorit în el însuşi să moară şi a spus: Mai bine este pentru mine să mor decât să trăiesc!
And when the sun arose, God appointed a sultry east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, and he was faint, and he asked for himself death, and said, It is better for me to die than to live.
9 Şi Dumnezeu i-a spus lui Iona: Faci tu bine că te mânii din cauza plantei? Iar el a spus: Fac bine că mă mânii, până la moarte!
And God said to Jonah, Is it right that thou shouldst be angry for the gourd? And he said, It is right that I should be angry even to death.
10 Atunci DOMNUL a spus: Ai avut milă de plantă, pentru care nu ai muncit, nici nu ai făcut-o să crească; ea care într-o noapte s-a ridicat şi într-o noapte a pierit.
And Jehovah said, Thou hast had pity on the gourd for which thou hast not labored, and which thou madest not to grow, which grew up in a night and perished in a night;
11 Şi nu ar trebui să cruţ Ninive, acea mare cetate, în care sunt mai mult de o sută douăzeci de mii de oameni care nu pot să discearnă între dreapta lor şi stânga lor; şi de asemenea multe vite?
and should not I spare Nineveh, the great city, wherein are more than a hundred and twenty thousand persons that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand, and also many cattle?
