1 Şi s-a întâmplat în zilele lui Ahaşveroş, (Ahaşveroş care împărăţea din India până în Etiopia, peste o sută două zeci şi şapte de provincii);
These events happened in the time of Ahasuerus, who ruled over a hundred and twenty-seven provinces from India to Ethiopia
2 Că în acele zile, când împăratul Ahaşveroş a şezut pe tronul împărăţiei sale, care era în palatul Susa,
from his royal throne in the fortified palace of Susa.
3 În al treilea an al domniei sale, el a făcut un ospăţ pentru toţi prinţii lui şi servitorii lui; puterea Persiei şi a Mediei, nobilii şi prinţii provinciilor fiind înaintea lui:
In the third year of his reign, the king gave a feast for all his officers and courtiers. The commanders of the military forces of Persia and Media, the nobles and provincial rulers were present
4 Când el a arătat bogăţiile împărăţiei sale glorioase şi onoarea măreţei sale maiestăţi multe zile: o sută optzeci de zile.
while for one hundred and eighty days he showed them the glorious riches of his kingdom and the costliness of his magnificent regalia.
5 Şi când s-au sfârşit aceste zile, împăratul a făcut un ospăţ pentru toţi oamenii prezenţi la palatul Susa, deopotrivă pentru mari şi mici, şapte zile, în curtea grădinii palatului împăratului.
When these days were ended, the king held a banquet for all the people who were present in the royal palace at Susa, high and low alike. It was a seven days’ feast in the enclosed garden of the royal palace.
6 Erau acolo draperii albe, verzi şi albastre, întinse cu funii de in subţire şi purpură, prinse de inele de argint şi coloane de marmură; paturile erau din aur şi argint pe un pavaj de marmură roşie şi albastră şi albă şi neagră.
There were white and violet cotton curtains fastened to silver rings and pillars of marble with cords of fine purple wool and linen. The couches were of gold and silver placed upon a mosaic pavement of alabaster, white marble, mother-of-pearl, and dark stone.
7 Şi le dădeau de băut în vase de aur, (vasele fiind diferite unele de altele, ) şi vin împărătesc din abundenţă, conform stării împăratului.
Drink was brought in vessels of gold – which were all different – and the king’s wine was provided with royal liberality.
8 Şi băutul era conform legii; nimeni nu obliga; fiindcă împăratul rânduise tuturor ofiţerilor casei sale să facă conform cu plăcerea fiecăruia.
The drinking was unrestricted, for the king had directed all the officers of his household to let each man do as he pleased.
9 De asemenea împărăteasa Vaşti a dat un ospăţ pentru femeile din casa împărătească a împăratului Ahaşveroş.
Queen Vashti also gave a feast for the women in the King Ahasuerus’ royal palace.
10 În ziua a şaptea, când inima împăratului era veselă cu vin, el a poruncit lui Mehuman, lui Bizta, lui Harbona, lui Bigta şi lui Abagta, lui Zetar şi lui Carcas, celor şapte fameni care serveau în prezenţa împăratului Ahaşveroş,
On the seventh day, when the king was merry with wine, he commanded Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha, Abagtha, Zathar and Carkas, his seven eunuch attendants
11 Să o aducă pe împărăteasa Vaşti înaintea împăratului cu coroana împărătească, pentru a arăta oamenilor şi prinţilor frumuseţea ei, fiindcă ea era plăcută la vedere.
to bring Queen Vashti before him with the royal diadem on her head, to show her beauty to the people and the officials, for she was very beautiful.
12 Dar împărăteasa Vaşti a refuzat să vină la porunca împăratului dată prin fameni; de aceea împăratul s-a înfuriat foarte mult şi mânia lui ardea în el.
But Queen Vashti refused to come as the king commanded through the eunuchs. Then the king became very angry and his fury burned within him.
13 Atunci împăratul a spus înţelepţilor, care cunoşteau timpurile, (fiindcă aşa era obiceiul împăratului cu toţi cei ce cunoşteau lege şi judecată;
The king turned to the wise men who knew the precedents, for it was his custom to confer with those wise in law.
14 Şi lângă el erau Carşena, Şetar, Admata, Tarşiş, Meres, Marsena şi Memucan, cei şapte prinţi ai Persiei şi ai Mediei, care vedeau faţa împăratului şi care stăteau în locul dintâi în împărăţie).
Those next to him were Carshena, Shethar, Admatha, Tarshish, Meres, Marsena and Memucan, seven officials of Persia and Media who had access to the king and were highest in the kingdom.
15 Ce să facem împărătesei Vaşti conform legii, pentru că ea nu a împlinit porunca împăratului Ahaşveroş dată prin fameni.
“Queen Vashti”, the king said, “has failed to obey my royal command – the command of King Ahasuerus conveyed through the eunuchs! What does the law say should be done to her?”
16 Şi Memucan a răspuns înaintea împăratului şi a prinţilor: Împărăteasa Vaşti a făcut rău nu doar împăratului, ci şi prinţilor şi tuturor oamenilor din toate provinciile împăratului Ahaşveroş.
Memucan replied before the king and the officials, “Queen Vashti has done wrong not only to the king but also to all the officials and to all the peoples in all of the king’s provinces.
17 Fiindcă fapta împărătesei va fi cunoscută tuturor femeilor, astfel că ele îşi vor dispreţui soţii în ochii lor, când se va spune: Împăratul Ahaşveroş a poruncit împărătesei Vaşti să fie adusă înaintea lui, dar ea nu a venit.
The refusal of the queen will be reported to all the women with the result that it will make them despise their husbands. They will say, ‘King Ahasuerus commanded Queen Vashti to be brought in before him, but she did not come!’
18 Tot aşa prinţesele Persiei şi ale Mediei, care au auzit despre fapta împărătesei, vor spune la fel în această zi tuturor prinţilor împăratului. Astfel se va ridica prea mult dispreţ şi furie.
This very day the ladies of Persia and Media who have heard of the refusal of the queen will tell it to all the king’s officials, and there will be contempt and strife!
19 Dacă face plăcere împăratului, să iasă o poruncă împărătească de la el, şi să fie scrisă între legile persanilor şi ale mezilor, ca să nu fie schimbată: Că Vaşti să nu mai intre înaintea împăratului Ahaşveroş; şi împăratul să dea statutul ei împărătesc alteia mai bună decât ea.
If it seems best to the king, let him send out a royal edict. Let it be written among the laws of Persia and Media, never to be repealed, that Vashti may never again come before King Ahasuerus. Let the king give her place as queen to another who is more worthy than she.
20 Şi după ce hotărârea împăratului pe care o va da el va fi făcută cunoscută prin toată împărăţia lui, (fiindcă este mare, ) toate soţiile vor da onoare soţilor lor, deopotrivă celor mari şi celor mici.
When the king’s decree which he makes is heard throughout his kingdom – great as it is – the wives of all classes will give honor to their husbands.”
21 Şi spusa a plăcut împăratului şi prinţilor; şi împăratul a făcut conform cuvântului lui Memucan;
The proposal pleased the king and the officials, and the king did as Memucan advised.
22 Şi a trimis scrisori în toate provinciile împăratului, în fiecare provincie conform scrisului ei şi fiecărui popor după limba lui, că fiecare bărbat să stăpânească în casa lui şi că aceasta să fie răspândită conform limbii fiecărui popor.
He sent letters to all the provinces, to every province in its own system of writing and to every people in their language, that every man should be master in his own house!
