Jó 31

1 Eu fiz um pacto com meus olhos; como, pois, eu olharia com cobiça para a virgem?

I made a covenant with mine eyes; How then should I look upon a virgin?

2 Pois qual é a porção [dada] por Deus acima, e a herança [dada] pelo Todo-Poderoso das alturas?

For what is the portion from God above, And the heritage from the Almighty on high?

3 Por acaso a calamidade não é para o perverso, e o desastre para os que praticam injustiça?

Is it not calamity to the unrighteous, And disaster to the workers of iniquity?

4 Por acaso ele não vê meus caminhos, e conta todos os meus passos?

Doth not he see my ways, And number all my steps?

5 Se eu andei com falsidade, e se meu pé se apressou para o engano,

If I have walked with falsehood, And my foot hath hasted to deceit

6 Pese-me ele em balanças justas, e Deus saberá minha integridade.

(Let me be weighed in an even balance, That God may know mine integrity);

7 Se meus passos se desviaram do caminho, e meu coração seguiu meus olhos, e se algo se apegou às minhas mãos,

If my step hath turned out of the way, And my heart walked after mine eyes, And if any spot hath cleaved to my hands:

8 Que eu semeie, e outro coma; e meus produtos sejam arrancados.

Then let me sow, and let another eat; Yea, let the produce of my field be rooted out.

9 Se foi meu coração se deixou seduzir por [alguma] mulher, ou se estive espreitei à porta de meu próximo,

If my heart hath been enticed unto a woman, And I have laid wait at my neighbor’s door;

10 Que minha mulher moa para outro, e outros se encurvem sobre ela.

Then let my wife grind unto another, And let others bow down upon her.

11 Pois tal seria um crime vergonhoso, e delito [a ser sentenciado por] juízes.

For that were a heinous crime; Yea, it were an iniquity to be punished by the judges:

12 Pois seria um fogo que consumiria até à perdição, e destruiria toda a minha renda.

For it is a fire that consumeth unto Destruction, And would root out all mine increase.

13 Se desprezei o direito de meu servo ou de minha serva quando eles reclamaram comigo,

If I have despised the cause of my man-servant or of my maid-servant, When they contended with me;

14 Que faria eu quando Deus se levantasse? E quando ele investigasse [a causa], o que eu lhe responderia?

What then shall I do when God riseth up? And when he visiteth, what shall I answer him?

15 Aquele que me fez no ventre [materno também] não fez a ele? E não nos preparou de um mesmo [modo] na madre?

Did not he that made me in the womb make him? And did not one fashion us in the womb?

16 Se eu neguei aos pobres o que eles desejavam, ou fiz desfalecer os olhos da viúva;

If I have withheld the poor from [their] desire, Or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail,

17 E se comi meu alimento sozinho, e o órfão não comeu dele

Or have eaten my morsel alone, And the fatherless hath not eaten thereof

18 (Porque desde a minha juventude cresceu comigo como [se eu fosse seu pai], e desde o ventre de minha mãe guiei [a viúva] );

(Nay, from my youth he grew up with me as with a father, And her have I guided from my mother’s womb);

19 Se eu vi alguém morrer por falta de roupa, e o necessitado sem algo que o cobrisse,

If I have seen any perish for want of clothing, Or that the needy had no covering;

20 Se sua cintura não me bendisse, quando ele se esquentava com as peles de meus cordeiros;

If his loins have not blessed me, And if he hath not been warmed with the fleece of my sheep;

21 Se levantei minha mão contra o órfão, quando vi que seria favorecido na corte judicial,

If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, Because I saw my help in the gate:

22 Que minha escápula caia do meu ombro, e meu braço se quebre de sua articulação.

Then let my shoulder fall from the shoulder-blade, And mine arm be broken from the bone.

23 Porque o castigo de Deus era um assombro para mim, e eu não teria poder contra sua majestade.

For calamity from God is a terror to me, And by reason of his majesty I can do nothing.

24 Se eu pus no ouro minha esperança, ou disse ao ouro fino: Tu és minha confiança;

If I have made gold my hope, And have said to the fine gold, [Thou art] my confidence;

25 Se eu me alegrei de que minha riqueza era muita, e de que minha mão havia obtido muito;

If I have rejoiced because my wealth was great, And because my hand had gotten much;

26 Se olhei para o sol quando brilhava, e à lua quando estava bela,

If I have beheld the sun when it shined, Or the moon walking in brightness,

27 E meu coração se deixou enganar em segredo, e minha boca beijou minha mão,

And my heart hath been secretly enticed, And my mouth hath kissed my hand:

28 Isto também seria um delito [a ser sentenciado por] juiz; porque teria negado ao Deus de cima.

This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judges; For I should have denied the God that is above.

29 Se eu me alegrei da desgraça daquele que me odiava, e me agradei quando o mal o encontrou,

If I have rejoiced at the destruction of him that hated me, Or lifted up myself when evil found him

30 Sendo que nem deixei minha boca pecar, desejando sua morte com maldição,

(Yea, I have not suffered my mouth to sin By asking his life with a curse);

31 Se a gente da minha casa nunca tivesse dito: Quem não se satisfez da carne dada por ele?

If the men of my tent have not said, Who can find one that hath not been filled with his meat?

32 O estrangeiro não passava a noite na rua; eu abria minhas portas ao viajante.

(The sojourner hath not lodged in the street; But I have opened my doors to the traveller);

33 Se encobri minhas transgressões como as pessoas [fazem], escondendo meu delito em meu seio;

If like Adam I have covered my transgressions, By hiding mine iniquity in my bosom,

34 Porque eu tinha medo da grande multidão, e o desprezo das famílias me atemorizou; então me calei, e não saí da porta:

Because I feared the great multitude, And the contempt of families terrified me, So that I kept silence, and went not out of the door—

35 Quem me dera se alguém me ouvisse! Eis que minha vontade é que o Todo-Poderoso me responda, e meu adversário escrevesse um relato da acusação.

Oh that I had one to hear me! (Lo, here is my signature, let the Almighty answer me) And [that I had] the indictment which mine adversary hath written!

36 Certamente eu o carregaria sobre meu ombro, e o poria em mim como uma coroa.

Surely I would carry it upon my shoulder; I would bind it unto me as a crown:

37 Eu lhe diria o número de meus passos, e como um príncipe eu me chegaria a ele.

I would declare unto him the number of my steps; As a prince would I go near unto him.

38 Se minha terra clamar contra mim, e seus sulcos juntamente chorarem;

If my land crieth out against me, And the furrows thereof weep together;

39 Se comi seus frutos sem [pagar] dinheiro, ou fiz expirar a alma de seus donos;

If I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, Or have caused the owners thereof to lose their life:

40 Em lugar de trigo que [me] produza cardos, e ervas daninhas no lugar da cevada. [Aqui] terminam as palavras de Jó.

Let thistles grow instead of wheat, And cockle instead of barley. The words of Job are ended.
