1 Synu mój! jeźlibyś ręczył za przyjaciela twego, a dałbyś obcemu rękę twoję:
My son, if thou hast become surety for another, If thou hast stricken hands for another,
2 Usidliłeś się słowy ust twoich, pojmanyś mowami ust twoich.
If thou hast become ensnared by the words of thy mouth, If thou hast been caught by the words of thy mouth,
3 Przetoż uczyń tak, synu mój! a wyzwól się, gdyżeś wpadł w rękę przyjaciela twego; idźże, upokórz się, a nalegaj na przyjaciela twego.
Do this now, my son, and rescue thyself, —Since thou hast fallen into the hands of thy neighbor, —Go, prostrate thyself, and be urgent with thy neighbor!
4 Nie dawaj snu oczom twoim, ani drzemania powiekom twoim.
Give not sleep to thine eyes, nor slumber to thine eyelids;
5 Wyrwij się jako łani z rąk myśliwca i jako ptak z ręki ptasznika.
Rescue thyself, as a roe from the hand, And as a bird from the hand of the fowler.
6 Idź do mrówki, leniwcze! obacz drogi jej, a nabądź mądrości;
Go to the ant, O sluggard! Consider her ways, and be wise!
7 Która, choć nie ma wodza, ani przełożonego, ani pana,
She hath no governor, Nor overseer, nor ruler;
8 Przecież w lecie gotuje pokarm swój, a zgromadza w żniwa żywność swoję.
Yet she prepareth in the summer her food, She gathereth in the harvest her meat.
9 Leniwcze! dokądże leżeć będziesz? kiedyż wstaniesz ze snu swego?
How long wilt thou lie in bed, O sluggard? When wilt thou arise from thy sleep?
10 Trochę się prześpisz, trochę podrzemiesz, trochę złożysz ręce, abyś odpoczywał.
“A little sleep, —a little slumber, —A little folding of the hands to rest:”
11 A wtem ubóstwo twoje przyjdzie jako podróżny, a niedostatek twój, jako mąż zbrojny.
So shall thy poverty come upon thee like a robber, Yea, thy want, as an armed man!
12 Człowiek niepobożny, mąż złośliwy chodzi w przewrotności ust;
A worthless wretch is the unrighteous man, Who walketh with a deceitful mouth;
13 Mruga oczyma swemi, mówi nogami swemi, ukazuje palcami swemi;
Who winketh with his eyes, Speaketh with his feet, And teacheth with his fingers.
14 Przewrotności są w sercu jego, myśli złe na każdy czas, a zwady rozsiewa.
Fraud is in his heart; He deviseth mischief continually; He scattereth contentions.
15 Przetoż prędko przyjdzie upadek jego; nagle skruszony będzie bez uleczenia.
Therefore shall calamity come upon him suddenly; In a moment shall he be destroyed, and that without remedy;
16 Sześć jest rzeczy, których nienawidzi Pan, a siódma jest obrzydliwością duszy jego;
These six things doth the LORD hate; Yea, seven are an abomination to him:
17 Oczów wyniosłych, języka kłamliwego, i rąk wylewających krew niewinną;
Lofty eyes, a false tongue, And hands which shed innocent blood;
18 Serca, które knuje myśli złe; nóg, które się kwapią bieżeć ku złemu;
A heart that contriveth wicked devices; Feet that are swift in running to mischief,
19 Świadka fałszywego, który mówi kłamstwo, i tego, który sieje rosterki między braćmi.
A false witness, that uttereth lies, And him that soweth discord among brethren.
20 Strzeżże, synu mój! przykazania ojca twego, a nie opuszczaj nauki matki twojej.
Keep, O my son! the commandment of thy father, And forsake not the precepts of thy mother!
21 Wiążże je zawżdy u serca twego, a wieszaj je u szyi twojej.
Bind them continually to thy heart, Tie them around thy neck!
22 Gdziekolwiek pójdziesz, poprowadzi cię; gdy, zaśniesz strzedz cię będzie, a gdy się ocucisz, rozmawiać z tobą będzie,
When thou goest forth, they shall guide thee; When thou sleepest, they shall watch over thee; And, when thou awakest, they shall talk with thee.
23 (Bo przykazanie jest pochodnią, nauka światłością, a drogą żywota są karności ćwiczenia.)
For the commandment is a lamp, and instruction a light; Yea, the rebukes of correction lead to life.
24 Aby cię strzegły od niewiasty złej, i od łagodnego języka niewiasty obcej.
They shall guard thee from the evil woman, From the smooth tongue of the unchaste woman.
25 Nie pożądaj piękności jej w sercu twojem, a niech cię nie łowi powiekami swemi.
Desire not her beauty in thy heart, Nor let her catch thee with her eyelids;
26 Albowiem dla niewiasty wszetecznej zubożeje człowiek aż do kęsa chleba; owszem żona cudzołożna drogą duszę łowi.
For by a harlot a man is brought to a morsel of bread, And the adulteress layeth snares for the precious life.
27 Izaż może kto brać ogień do zanadrzy swoich, aby szaty jego nie zgorzały?
Can a man take fire into his bosom, And his clothes not be burned?
28 Izaż może kto chodzić po rozpalonym węglu, aby się nogi jego nie poparzyły?
Can one walk upon burning coals, And his feet not be scorched?
29 Tak kto wchodzi do żony bliźniego swego, nie będzie bez winy, ktokolwiek się jej dotknie.
So is it with him who goeth in to his neighbor's wife; Whoever toucheth her shall not go unpunished.
30 Nie kładą hańby na złodzieja, jeżliż co ukradnie, chcąc nasycić duszę swoję, będąc głodnym;
Men do not overlook a thief, Though he steal to satisfy his appetite, when he is hungry;
31 Ale gdy go zastaną, nagradza siedmiorako, albo wszystkę majętność domu swego daje.
If found, he must repay sevenfold, And give up all the substance of his house.
32 Lecz cudzołożący z niewiastą głupi jest, a kto chce zatracić duszę swoję, ten to czyni.
Whoso committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding; He that doeth it destroyeth himself;
33 Karanie i zelżywość odniesie, a hańba jego nie będzie zgładzona.
Blows and dishonor shall he get, And his reproach shall not be wiped away.
34 Bo zawisna miłość jest zapalczywością męża, a nie sfolguje w dzień pomsty.
For jealousy is the fury of a man; He will not spare in the day of vengeance;
35 Nie będzie miał względu na żaden okup, ani przyjmie, chociażby mu najwięcej darów dawano.
And he will not pay regard to any ransom, Nor be content, though thou offer many gifts.
