1 Kana booddee dubbiin Waaqayyoo mulʼataan gara Abraam dhufee akkana jedhe; “Yaa Abraam hin sodaatin; ani gaachana keetii fi gatii kee guddicha.”
After all this had happened, God spoke to Abram in a vision, telling him, “Don't be afraid, Abram! I am your protector, and your truly great reward!”
2 Abraam garuu, “Yaa Waaqayyo Gooftaa, waan ani ijoollee hin qabneef namni qabeenya koo dhaaluuf jiru Eliiʼezer namicha Damaasqoo kana; egaa ati maal naa kennita?” jedhe.
But Abram replied, “Lord God, what good is whatever you give me? I don't have any children, and the heir to all that I have is Eliezer of Damascus.”
3 Abraam, “Kunoo ati ijoollee tokko illee naa hin kennine; hojjetaan mana koo jiraatu tokko kunoo na dhaaluuf jira” jedhe.
Abram went on to complain, “Look! You haven't given me any children, so a servant from my household has to be my heir!”
4 Kunoo dubbiin Waaqayyoo gara isaa dhufee, “Ilma gudeeda keetiitu dhaaltuu kee taʼa malee namichi kun dhaaltuu kee hin taʼu” jedhe.
But then the Lord told him, “This man won't be your heir. Your heir will be your very own son.”
5 Innis Abraamin gad baasee, “Samiiwwan ol ilaaliitii yoo urjiiwwan lakkaaʼuu dandeesse lakkaaʼi” jedhe. Itti fufees, “Sanyiin kees akkanuma baayʼata” jedheen.
The Lord took Abram outside and said to him, “Look up at the sky. See if you can count the stars! That's how many descendants you will have!”
6 Abraam Waaqayyotti amane; innis qajeelummaatti lakkaaʼeef.
Abram trusted what the Lord said, and so the Lord counted Abram as being in a right relationship with him.
7 Innis, “Ani Waaqayyo isa akka ati ishee dhaaltuuf biyya kana siif kennuuf jedhee Uuri biyya Kaldootaa keessaa si baasee dha” jedheen.
The Lord also told him, “I am the Lord, who led you from Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land for you to own.”
8 Abraam garuu, “Yaa Waaqayyoo Gooftaa, ani biyya kana dhaaluu koo akkamittin beeka?” jedhe.
“But Lord God, how can I be certain that I will own it?” Abram asked.
9 Kanaafuu Waaqayyo, “Goromsa tokko, reʼee tokkoo fi korbeessa hoolaa tokko kanneen tokkoon tokkoon isaanii waggaa sadii sadii guutan, akkasumas gugee tokkoo fi gugee sookkee tokko naa fidi” jedheen.
The Lord told him, “Bring me a cow, a goat, and a ram, all of them three years old, together with a dove and a young pigeon.”
10 Abraamis warra kana hunda gara isaatti fidee, qixxee lamaanitti kukkute; warra qixxee lamaanitti kukkutamanis gamaa gamana kaaʼe; simbirroota garuu qixxee lamaanitti hin kukkunne.
So Abram took and killed the three animals. Then he cut them in half, and placed each half opposite the other. However, he didn't cut the birds in half.
11 Ergasii allaattiin foon sanatti gad buute; Abraam garuu irraa ariʼe.
When vultures flew down on the carcasses, Abram frightened them off.
12 Utuma aduun dhiʼaa jirtuu hirribni guddaan Abraamin qabe; kunoo dukkanni guddaanii fi sodaachisaan isa irra buʼe.
As the sun went down, a deep sleep came over Abram, and at the same time a dense and terrifying darkness fell on him.
13 Waaqayyos akkana isaan jedhe; “Akka sanyiin kee biyya kan isaa hin taʼin keessatti alagaa taʼee waggaa dhibba afuris achitti garboomfamee cunqurfamu dhugumaan beeki.
The Lord explained to Abram, “You can be absolutely sure that your descendants will be strangers in a foreign land, where they will be slaves and mistreated for 400 years.
14 Ani garuu saba isaan akkuma garbootaatti tajaajilan sana nan adaba; ergasii immoo isaan qabeenya guddaa fudhatanii achii baʼu.
However, I will punish the nation that makes them slaves, and later on they will leave, taking many valuable possessions with them.
15 Ati garuu nagaan gara abbootii keetii dhaqxa; bara dheeraas jiraattee awwaalamta.
But as for you, you will die in peace and be buried, having lived a good long life.
16 Sanyiin kee dhaloota afuraffaatti as deebiʼa; cubbuun Amoorotaa amma iyyuu hin guunneetii.”
Four generations later your descendants will come back here to live, because right now the sins of the Amorites have not reached their full extent.”
17 Yommuu aduun lixxee dukkanaaʼettis kunoo barbadaan ibiddaa aaru guca tokko wajjin mulʼatee foon kukkutame sana gidduu darbe.
After the sun set and it grew dark, suddenly a smoking furnace and a flaming torch appeared and passed between the halves of the animal carcasses.
18 Gaafa sanas Waaqayyo akkana jedhee Abraam wajjin kakuu gale; “Ani biyya laga Gibxii jalqabee hamma laga Efraaxiis guddichaatti jiru kana sanyii keetiif nan kenna;
This is how the Lord made an agreement with Abram that day and promised him, “I'm giving this land to your descendants. It extends from the Wadi of Egypt to the great Euphrates River,
19 kunis biyya Qeenotaa, Qeneezotaa, Qadmoonotaas,
and includes the territory of the Kenites, Kenizzites, Kadmonites,
20 kan Heetotaa, Feerzotaa, Refaayimootaa,
Hittites, Perizzites, Rephaites,
21 Amoorotaa, Kanaʼaanotaa Girgaashotaatii fi kan Yebuusotaa jechuu dha.”
Amorites, Canaanites, Girgashites, and Jebusites.”
