1 Ein song til høgtidsferderne; av David. Hadde ikkje Herren vore med oss, - so segje Israel -

If it had not been that the Lord was with us, let Israel now say:

2 hadde ikkje Herren vore med oss, då menneskje stod upp imot oss,

If it had not been that the Lord was with us, When men rose up against us,

3 so hadde dei slukt oss livande, då deira vreide loga imot oss,

Perhaps they had swallowed us up alive. When their fury was enkindled against us,

4 so hadde vatni flødt yver oss, ei elv gjenge yver vår sjæl,

Perhaps the waters had swallowed us up.

5 so hadde dei gjenge yver vår sjæl, dei storlåtne vatni.

Our soul hath passed through a torrent: perhaps our soul had passed through a water insupportable.

6 Lova vere Herren, som ikkje gav oss til åt for deira tenner!

Blessed be the Lord, who hath not given us to be a prey to their teeth.

7 Vår sjæl slapp undan som ein fugl or fangarsnara. Snara rivna sund, og me slapp undan.

Our soul hath been delivered as a sparrow out of the snare of the followers. The snare is broken, and we are delivered.

8 Vår hjelp er i Herrens namn, han som gjorde himmel og jord.

Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth.
