नीतिवचन 9
1 ज्ञान ने एक घर का निर्माण किया है; उसने काटकर अपने लिए सात स्तंभ भी गढ़े हैं.
Wisdom has built a house for herself, and set up seven pillars.
2 उसने उत्कृष्ट भोजन तैयार किए हैं तथा उत्तम द्राक्षारस भी परोसा है; उसने अतिथियों के लिए सभी भोज तैयार कर रखा है.
She has killed her beasts; she has mingled her wine in a bowl, and prepared her table.
3 आमंत्रण के लिए उसने अपनी सहेलियां भेज दी हैं कि वे नगर के सर्वोच्च स्थलों से आमंत्रण की घोषणा करें,
She has sent forth her servants, calling with a loud proclamation to the feast, saying,
4 “जो कोई सरल-साधारण है, यहां आ जाए!” जिस किसी में सरल ज्ञान का अभाव है, उसे वह कहता है,
Whoso is foolish, let him turn aside to me: and to them that lack understanding she says,
5 “आ जाओ, मेरे भोज में सम्मिलित हो जाओ. उस द्राक्षारस का भी सेवन करो, जो मैंने परोसा है.
Come, eat of my bread, and drink wine which I have mingled for you.
6 अपना भोला चालचलन छोड़कर; समझ का मार्ग अपना लो और जीवन में प्रवेश करो.”
Leave folly, that you may reign for ever; and seek wisdom, and improve understanding by knowledge.
7 यदि कोई ठट्ठा करनेवाले की भूल सुधारता है, उसे अपशब्द ही सुनने पड़ते हैं; यदि कोई किसी दुष्ट को डांटता है, अपने ही ऊपर अपशब्द ले आता है.
He that reproves evil [men] shall get dishonor to himself; and he that rebukes an ungodly [man] shall disgrace himself.
8 तब ठट्ठा करनेवाले को मत डांटो, अन्यथा तुम उसकी घृणा के पात्र हो जाओगे; तुम ज्ञानवान को डांटो, तुम उसके प्रेम पात्र ही बनोगे.
Rebuke not evil [men], lest they should hate you: rebuke a wise [man], and he will love you.
9 शिक्षा ज्ञानवान को दो. इससे वह और भी अधिक ज्ञानवान हो जाएगा; शिक्षा किसी सज्जन को दो, इससे वह अपने ज्ञान में बढ़ते जाएगा.
Give an opportunity to a wise [man], and he will be wiser: instruct a just man, and he will receive more [instruction].
10 याहवेह के प्रति श्रद्धा-भय से ज्ञान का तथा महा पवित्र के सैद्धान्तिक ज्ञान से समझ का उद्भव होता है.
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the counsel of saints is understanding: for to know the law is [the character] of a sound mind.
11 तुम मेरे द्वारा ही आयुष्मान होगे तथा तुम्हारी आयु के वर्ष बढ़ाए जाएंगे.
For in this way you shall live long, and years of your life shall be added to you.
12 यदि तुम बुद्धिमान हो, तो तुम्हारा ज्ञान तुमको प्रतिफल देगा; यदि तुम ज्ञान के ठट्ठा करनेवाले हो तो इसके परिणाम मात्र तुम भोगोगे.
Son, if you be wise for yourself, you shall also be wise for your neighbors; and if you should prove wicked, you alone will bear the evil. He that stays himself upon falsehoods, attempts to rule the winds, and the same will pursue birds in their fight: for he has forsaken the ways of his own vineyard, and he has caused the axles of his own husbandry to go astray; and he goes through a dry desert, and a [land] appointed to drought, and he gathers barrenness with his hands.
13 श्रीमती मूर्खता उच्च स्वर में बक-बक करती है; वह भोली है, अज्ञानी है.
A foolish and bold woman, who knows not modesty, comes to lack a morsel.
14 उसके घर के द्वार पर ही अपना आसन लगाया है, जब वह नगर में होती है तब वह अपने लिए सर्वोच्च आसन चुन लेती है,
She sits at the doors of her house, on a seat openly in the streets,
15 वह उनको आह्वान करती है, जो वहां से निकलते हैं, जो अपने मार्ग की ओर अग्रगामी हैं,
calling to passers by, and to those that are going right on their ways;
16 “जो कोई सीधा-सादा है, वह यहां आ जाए!” और निबुद्धियों से वह कहती है,
[saying], Whoso is most senseless of you, let him turn aside to me; and I exhort those that lack prudence, saying,
17 “मीठा लगता है चोरी किया हुआ जल; स्वादिष्ट लगता है वह भोजन, जो छिपा-छिपा कर खाया जाता है!”
Take and enjoy secret bread, and the sweet water of theft.
