Προς Κορινθιους Α΄ 8
1 Περί δε των ειδωλοθύτων, εξεύρομεν ότι πάντες έχομεν γνώσιν, η γνώσις όμως φυσιοί, η δε αγάπη οικοδομεί.
Now as touching things offered unto idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth.
2 Και εάν τις νομίζη ότι εξεύρει τι, δεν έμαθεν έτι ουδέν καθώς πρέπει να μάθη·
And if any man think that he knoweth any thing, he knoweth nothing yet as he ought to know.
3 αλλ' εάν τις αγαπά τον Θεόν, ούτος γνωρίζεται υπ' αυτού.
But if any man love God, the same is known of him.
4 Περί της βρώσεως λοιπόν των ειδωλοθύτων, εξεύρομεν ότι το είδωλον είναι ουδέν εν τω κόσμω, και ότι δεν υπάρχει ουδείς άλλος Θεός ειμή εις.
As concerning therefore the eating of those things that are offered in sacrifice unto idols, we know that an idol [is] nothing in the world, and that [there is] none other God but one.
5 Διότι αν και ήναι λεγόμενοι θεοί είτε εν τω ουρανώ είτε επί της γης, καθώς και είναι θεοί πολλοί και κύριοι πολλοί,
For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or in earth, (as there be gods many, and lords many, )
6 αλλ' εις ημάς είναι εις Θεός ο Πατήρ, εξ ου τα πάντα και ημείς εις αυτόν, και εις Κύριος Ιησούς Χριστός, δι' ου τα πάντα και ημείς δι' αυτού.
But to us [there is but] one God, the Father, of whom [are] all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom [are] all things, and we by him.
7 Αλλά δεν είναι εις πάντας η γνώσις αύτη· τινές δε διά την συνείδησιν του ειδώλου έως σήμερον τρώγουσι το ειδωλόθυτον ως ειδωλόθυτον, και η συνείδησις αυτών ασθενής ούσα μολύνεται.
Howbeit [there is] not in every man that knowledge: for some with conscience of the idol unto this hour eat [it] as a thing offered unto an idol; and their conscience being weak is defiled.
8 το φαγητόν όμως δεν συνιστά ημάς εις τον Θεόν· διότι ούτε εάν φάγωμεν περισσεύομεν, ούτε εάν δεν φάγωμεν ελαττούμεθα.
But meat commendeth us not to God: for neither, if we eat, are we the better; neither, if we eat not, are we the worse.
9 Πλην προσέχετε μήπως αύτη η εξουσία σας γείνη πρόσκομμα εις τους ασθενείς.
But take heed lest by any means this liberty of yours become a stumblingblock to them that are weak.
10 Διότι εάν τις ίδη σε, τον έχοντα γνώσιν, ότι κάθησαι εις τράπεζαν εντός ναού ειδώλων, δεν θέλει ενθαρρυνθή η συνείδησις αυτού, ασθενούντος, εις το να τρώγη τα ειδωλόθυτα;
For if any man see thee which hast knowledge sit at meat in the idol’s temple, shall not the conscience of him which is weak be emboldened to eat those things which are offered to idols;
11 Και διά την γνώσιν σου θέλει απολεσθή ο ασθενής αδελφός, διά τον οποίον ο Χριστός απέθανεν.
And through thy knowledge shall the weak brother perish, for whom Christ died?
12 Αμαρτάνοντες δε ούτως εις τους αδελφούς και προσβάλλοντες την ασθενή συνείδησιν αυτών, εις τον Χριστόν αμαρτάνετε.
But when ye sin so against the brethren, and wound their weak conscience, ye sin against Christ.
