1 Timotheus 3
1 Das ist gewißlich wahr: So einer ein Bischofsamt begehrt, der begehrt ein köstlich Werk.
This [is] a true saying, If a man desireth the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work.
2 Ein Bischof soll unsträflich sein, eines Weibes Mann, nüchtern, besonnen, ehrbar, gastfrei, lehrfähig;
A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behavior, given to hospitality, apt to teach;
3 Kein Weinsäufer, kein Raufbold,
Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre, but patient; not a brawler, not covetous;
4 Der seinem eigenen Hause wohl vorsteht und gehorsame Kinder hat, mit aller Ehrbarkeit.
One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity;
5 So jemand seinem eigenen Hause nicht weiß vorzustehen, wie wird er für eine Gemeinde Gottes sorgen?
(For if a man knoweth not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)
6 Kein Neuling, auf daß er sich nicht aufblase und nicht dem Urteil des Teufels verfalle.
Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.
7 Er muß aber auch ein gutes Zeugnis haben von denen draußen, auf daß er nicht der Lästerung anheimfalle, und in den Fallstrick des Teufels gerate;
Moreover, he must have a good report of them who are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.
8 Desgleichen sollen die Diakone ehrbar sein, nicht doppelzüngig, nicht vielem Weintrinken ergeben, nicht nach schändlichem Gewinn trachten;
Likewise [must] the deacons [be] grave, not double-tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre,
9 Sie sollen das Geheimnis des Glaubens in reinem Gewissen bewahren.
Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience.
10 Auch sollen sie erst erprobt werden, dann in das Amt treten, wenn sie unsträflich waren.
And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being [found] blameless.
11 Die Weiber sollen gleichermaßen ehrbar sein, keine Lästerzungen, nüchtern und treu in allen Dingen.
Even so [must their] wives [be] grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things.
12 Die Diakone sollen ein Weib haben, Haus und Kinder in Zucht halten.
Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children, and their own houses well.
13 Wenn sie ihrem Amte wohl vorstehen, gelangen sie auf eine Ehrenstufe und zu vieler Zuversicht im Glauben in Jesus Christus.
For they that have used the office of a deacon well, purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith, which is in Christ Jesus.
14 Solches schreibe ich an dich und hoffe in nächster Zeit zu dir zu kommen;
These things I write to thee, hoping to come to thee shortly:
15 So ich aber verzöge, sollst du wissen, wie du dich zu verhalten hast im Hause Gottes, das ist die Gemeinde des lebendigen Gottes, als ein Pfeiler und eine Stütze der Wahrheit.
But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.
16 Und anerkanntermaßen ist das Geheimnis der Gottseligkeit groß: Gott ist im Fleisch geoffenbart, gerechtfertigt im Geist, erschaut von Engeln, gepredigt unter Heiden, geglaubt in der Welt, aufgenommen in die Herrlichkeit.
And without controversy, great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen by angels, preached to the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.
