Psalm 58
1 Dem Musikmeister, nach (der Singweise = Melodie) »Vertilge nicht«; von David ein Lied. Sprecht in Wahrheit ihr Recht, ihr Götter?
Unto the end. May you not destroy. Of David, with the inscription of a title. If, truly and certainly, you speak justice, then judge what is right, you sons of men.
2 Ach nein, im Herzen schmiedet ihr Frevel, im Lande wägen eure Hände Gewalttat dar.
For, even in your heart, you work iniquity. Your hands construct injustice on the earth.
3 Abtrünnig sind die Gottlosen schon von Geburt an, schon vom Mutterleib an gehn die Lügenredner irre.
Sinners have become foreigners from the womb; they have gone astray from conception. They have been speaking falsehoods.
4 Gift haben sie in sich wie Schlangengift, sie gleichen der tauben Otter, die ihr Ohr verstopft,
Their fury is similar to that of a serpent; it is like a deaf asp, who even blocks her ears,
5 die nicht hört auf die Stimme der Beschwörer, (auf die Stimme) des kundigen Bannspruchredners.
who will not listen to the voice of charmers, nor even to the enchanter who chants wisely.
6 Zerschmettre ihnen, Gott, die Zähne im Munde, den jungen Löwen brich aus das Gebiß, o HERR!
God will crush their teeth within their own mouth. The Lord will break the molars of the lions.
7 Laß sie vergehen wie Wasser, das sich verläuft! Schießt er seine Pfeile ab: sie seien wie ohne Spitze!
They will come to nothing, like water flowing away. He has aimed his bow, while they are being weakened.
8 Wie die Schnecke beim Kriechen zerfließt, so muß er zergehn, wie die Fehlgeburt eines Weibes, die das Licht nicht geschaut!
Like wax that flows, they will be carried away. Fire has fallen upon them, and they will not see the sun.
9 Bevor noch eure Töpfe den (brennenden) Stechdorn spüren, wird ihn, noch unverbrannt, die Zornglut hinwegstürmen.
Before your thorns could know the brier, he consumes them alive, as if in rage.
10 Der Gerechte wird sich freun, daß er Rache erlebt, seine Füße wird er baden im Blute des Frevlers,
The just one will rejoice when he sees vindication. He will wash his hands in the blood of the sinner.
11 und die Menschen werden bekennen: »Fürwahr, der Gerechte erntet noch Lohn! Fürwahr, noch gibt’s einen Gott, der auf Erden richtet!«
And man will say, “If the just one is fruitful, then, truly, there is a God judging them on earth.”
