Josua 10
1 Als nun Adoni-Zedek, der König von Jerusalem, die Kunde erhielt, daß Josua Ai erobert und den Bann an der Stadt vollstreckt habe, daß er mit Ai und seinem König ebenso wie mit Jericho und seinem König verfahren sei und daß die Bewohner von Gibeon Frieden mit den Israeliten geschlossen hätten und mitten unter ihnen wohnen geblieben seien,
When Adonizedek, the king of Jerusalem, had heard these things, specifically, that Joshua had seized Ai, and had overthrown it, (for just as he had done to Jericho and its king, so did he do to Ai and its king, ) and that the Gibeonites had fled over to Israel, and were now their confederates,
2 da fürchteten sie sich sehr; denn Gibeon war eine bedeutende Stadt, so groß wie irgendeine von den Königstädten und noch größer als Ai, und alle ihre Männer tapfere Krieger.
he was very afraid. For Gibeon was a great city, and was one of the royal cities, and was greater than the town of Ai, and all its warriors were very strong.
3 Daher schickte Adoni-Zedek, der König von Jerusalem, Gesandte an Hoham, den König von Hebron, sowie an Piream, den König von Jarmuth, an Japhia, den König von Lachis, und an Debir, den König von Eglon, und ließ ihnen sagen:
Therefore, Adonizedek, the king of Jerusalem, sent to Hoham, the king of Hebron, and to Piram, the king of Jarmuth, and also to Japhia, the king of Lachish, and to Debir, the king of Eglon, saying:
4 »Zieht zu mir herauf und helft mir, Gibeon dafür zu strafen, daß es mit Josua und den Israeliten Frieden geschlossen hat.«
“Ascend to me, and bring troops, so that we may fight against Gibeon. For it has fled over to Joshua and the sons of Israel.”
5 Da vereinigten sich und zogen hinauf die fünf Amoriterkönige: der König von Jerusalem, der König von Hebron, der König von Jarmuth, der König von Lachis und der König von Eglon mit allen ihren Heeren und belagerten Gibeon und bestürmten es.
And so, having assembled, the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon, together with their armies, went up and encamped around Gibeon, laying siege to it.
6 Da sandten die Gibeoniten Boten zu Josua in das Lager nach Gilgal und ließen ihm sagen: »Laß deine Knechte nicht im Stich! Komm eilends zu uns herauf, rette uns und hilf uns! Denn alle Könige der Amoriter, die das Bergland bewohnen, haben sich gegen uns verbündet.«
But the inhabitants of the city of Gibeon, when it was besieged, sent to Joshua, who was then staying in the camp at Gilgal. And they said to him: “May you not draw back your hands from helping your servants. Come quickly, and free us, and bring troops. For all the kings of the Amorites, who live in the mountains, have gathered together against us.”
7 Da zog Josua mit seinem gesamten Kriegsvolk, lauter tapferen Männern, von Gilgal aus hinauf;
And Joshua ascended from Gilgal, and the entire army of warriors with him, very strong men.
8 und der HERR sagte zu ihm: »Fürchte dich nicht vor ihnen! Denn ich habe sie in deine Gewalt gegeben: kein einziger von ihnen soll vor dir standhalten können.«
And the Lord said to Joshua: “You should not fear them. For I have delivered them into your hands. None of them will be able to withstand you.”
9 Als Josua sie nun plötzlich überfiel – die ganze Nacht hindurch war er von Gilgal hinaufgezogen –,
And so Joshua, ascending from Gilgal throughout the night, rushed upon them suddenly.
10 ließ der HERR unter ihnen einen plötzlichen Schrecken vor den Israeliten entstehen, so daß diese ihnen eine schwere Niederlage bei Gibeon beibrachten und sie in der Richtung nach dem Berghang von Beth-Horon verfolgten und sie bis Aseka und Makkeda schlugen.
And the Lord set them in disarray before the face of Israel. And he crushed them in a great defeat at Gibeon, and he pursued them along the way of the ascent to Beth-horon, and he struck them down, even as far as Azekah and Makkedah.
11 Als sie sich nun auf der Flucht vor den Israeliten am Abhang von Beth-Horon befanden, ließ der HERR große Steine vom Himmel bis nach Aseka hin auf sie herabfallen, so daß sie dadurch den Tod fanden; die Zahl derer, welche durch den Steinhagel das Leben verloren, war größer als die Zahl derer, welche durch das Schwert der Israeliten gefallen waren.
And while they were fleeing from the sons of Israel, and were on the descent of Beth-horon, the Lord cast great stones from heaven upon them, as far as Azekah. And many more were killed by the hailstones, than were struck down by the swords of the sons of Israel.
12 Damals betete Josua zum HERRN, an dem Tage, an dem der HERR die Amoriter den Israeliten preisgab, und zwar rief er angesichts der Israeliten aus: »Sonne, stehe still zu Gibeon und du, Mond, im Tal von Ajjalon!«
Then Joshua spoke to the Lord, on the day that he handed over the Amorite in the sight of the sons of Israel, and he said before them: “O sun, you shall not move toward Gibeon! O moon, you shall not move toward the valley of Aijalon!”
13 Da stand die Sonne still, und der Mond blieb stehen, bis das Volk Rache an seinen Feinden genommen hatte. Das steht bekanntlich im »Buch des Braven« geschrieben. Die Sonne blieb also mitten am Himmel stehen und eilte beinahe einen ganzen Tag lang nicht zum Untergang.
And the sun and the moon stood still, until the people had avenged themselves of their enemies. Has this not been written in the book of the just? And so the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and it did not hurry to its rest for the space of one day.
14 Einen Tag wie diesen hat es weder vorher noch später gegeben, daß der HERR auf die Stimme eines Menschen gehört hätte; denn der HERR stritt für Israel.
Never before and never after was there so long a day, as when the Lord obeyed the voice of a man, and fought for Israel.
15 [Hierauf kehrte Josua und ganz Israel mit ihm in das Lager nach Gilgal zurück.]
And Joshua returned, with all of Israel, into the camp of Gilgal.
16 Jene fünf Könige aber waren geflohen und hatten sich in der Höhle bei Makkeda versteckt.
For the five kings had fled, and had hidden themselves in a cave, near the city of Makkedah.
17 Als nun Josua die Meldung erhielt, daß man die fünf Könige versteckt in der Höhle bei Makkeda gefunden habe,
And it was reported to Joshua that the five kings had been found hidden in a cave, near the city of Makkedah.
18 gab er den Befehl: »Wälzt große Steine vor den Eingang der Höhle und stellt Leute zu ihrer Bewachung daneben auf!
And he instructed his companions and said: “Roll vast stones to the mouth of the cave, and station attentive men who will keep them closed.
19 Ihr anderen aber steht nicht still, sondern verfolgt eure Feinde und haut ihre Nachzügler nieder! Laßt sie nicht in ihre Städte entkommen; denn der HERR, euer Gott, hat sie in eure Gewalt gegeben.«
But as for you, do not stay here; instead, pursue the enemies, and cut down the lattermost of those who are fleeing. You shall not permit those whom the Lord God has delivered into your hands to enter into the protection of their cities.”
20 Als nun Josua und die Israeliten eine sehr schwere Niederlage unter ihnen bis zur völligen Vernichtung angerichtet hatten – diejenigen von ihnen, welche entkommen waren, hatten sich in die festen Plätze geflüchtet –
Thus, the adversaries were struck down in a great defeat, and having been nearly consumed, even to utter annihilation, those who were able to escape from Israel entered into fortified cities.
21 und als das ganze Kriegsvolk unangefochten zu Josua in das Lager nach Makkeda zurückgekehrt war, ohne daß jemand den Israeliten auch nur das Geringste hatte anhaben können,
And the entire army returned to Joshua at Makkedah, where they were then encamped, in good health and in their full numbers. And no one dared to move his tongue against the sons of Israel.
22 da gab Josua den Befehl: »Macht den Eingang der Höhle frei und bringt jene fünf Könige aus der Höhle zu mir heraus!«
And Joshua instructed, saying, “Open the mouth of the cave, and bring forward to me the five kings, who are hidden within it.”
23 Man kam dem Befehle nach und brachte jene fünf Könige aus der Höhle zu ihm heraus, die Könige von Jerusalem, von Hebron, von Jarmuth, von Lachis und von Eglon.
And the ministers did just as they had been ordered. And they led out to him the five kings from the cave: the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon.
24 Als man diese Könige nun zu Josua herausgeführt hatte, rief Josua alle Israeliten herbei und sagte zu den Anführern der Kriegsleute, die mit ihm gezogen waren: »Tretet heran und setzt diesen Königen den Fuß auf den Nacken!« Da traten sie heran und setzten ihnen den Fuß auf den Nacken.
And when they had been led out to him, he called all the men of Israel, and he said to the leaders of the army who were with him, “Go, and place your feet upon the necks of these kings.” And when they had gone and had tread their feet upon the necks of those who were thrown down,
25 Dann fuhr Josua fort: »Fürchtet euch nicht und habt keine Angst, seid mutig und stark! Denn ebenso wird der HERR es mit allen euren Feinden machen, mit denen ihr noch zu kämpfen habt.«
he spoke to them again: “Do not be afraid, and do not dread. Be strengthened and be steadfast. For so will the Lord do to all your enemies, against whom you fight.”
26 Hierauf ließ Josua sie totschlagen und an fünf Bäumen aufhängen; und sie blieben an den Bäumen bis zum Abend hängen.
And Joshua struck them down and killed them, and he suspended them on five gallows. And they hung there until evening.
27 Bei Sonnenuntergang aber nahm man sie auf Befehl Josuas von den Bäumen ab und warf sie in die Höhle, in der sie sich versteckt hatten, und legte große Steine an den Eingang der Höhle, die noch bis zum heutigen Tage dort liegen.
And when the sun had set, he instructed his assistants that they should take them down from the gallows. And having been taken down, they cast them into the cave, where they had lain hidden, and they set vast stones at its mouth, which remain, even to the present.
28 Josua eroberte dann an jenem Tage noch Makkeda und schlug es mit der Schärfe des Schwertes, indem er am dortigen König, an der Stadt und der gesamten Einwohnerschaft den Bann vollstreckte; er verschonte keinen einzigen von ihnen und verfuhr mit dem König von Makkeda, wie er mit dem König von Jericho verfahren war. –
Also on the same day, Joshua seized Makkedah, and he struck it with the edge of the sword, and he put to death its king and all its inhabitants. He did not leave in it even the smallest remains. And he did to the king of Makkedah, just as he had done to the king of Jericho.
29 Hierauf zog Josua mit allen Israeliten von Makkeda weiter nach Libna und bestürmte es;
Then he went on, with all of Israel, from Makkedah to Libnah, and he fought against it.
30 und der HERR ließ auch diese Stadt in die Hand der Israeliten fallen samt ihrem König, und er schlug sie mit der Schärfe des Schwertes samt der ganzen Einwohnerschaft; er verschonte keinen einzigen von ihnen und verfuhr mit dem dortigen König, wie er mit dem König von Jericho verfahren war. –
And the Lord delivered it, with its king, into the hands of Israel. And they struck the city with the edge of the sword, and all its inhabitants. They did not leave in it any remains. And they did to the king of Libnah, just as they had done to the king of Jericho.
31 Dann zog Josua mit allen Israeliten von Libna weiter nach Lachis, das er belagerte und bestürmte.
From Libnah, with all of Israel, he went on to Lachish. And taking positions around it with his army, he besieged it.
32 Und der HERR ließ auch Lachis in die Gewalt der Israeliten fallen, so daß Josua es am zweiten Tage eroberte und die Stadt samt der ganzen Einwohnerschaft mit der Schärfe des Schwertes schlug, genau so, wie er es mit Libna gemacht hatte.
And the Lord delivered Lachish into the hands of Israel, and he seized it on the following day, and he struck it with the edge of the sword, and every soul that was in it, just as he had done to Libnah.
33 Damals zog Horam, der König von Geser, herauf, um Lachis Hilfe zu leisten; aber Josua schlug ihn und sein Kriegsvolk so, daß kein einziger von ihnen am Leben blieb. –
At that time, Horam, the king of Gezer, went up so that he might assist Lachish. And Joshua struck him with all his people, even unto utter annihilation.
34 Dann zog Josua mit allen Israeliten von Lachis weiter nach Eglon, das sie belagerten und bestürmten.
And he went on from Lachish to Eglon, and he surrounded it.
35 Sie eroberten es noch an demselben Tage und schlugen es mit der Schärfe des Schwertes; an der ganzen Einwohnerschaft vollstreckte er an jenem Tage den Bann, genau so, wie er es mit Lachis gemacht hatte. –
And he also defeated it on the same day. And he struck all the souls that were in it with the edge of the sword, in accord with all that he had done to Lachish.
36 Hierauf zog Josua mit allen Israeliten von Eglon nach Hebron hinauf, das sie bestürmten;
He also ascended, with all of Israel, from Eglon into Hebron, and he fought against it.
37 sie eroberten es und schlugen es mit der Schärfe des Schwertes samt seinem König und allen zugehörigen Ortschaften und deren gesamten Einwohnerschaft, ohne einen einzigen zu verschonen, genau so, wie er es mit Eglon gemacht hatte, indem er an der Stadt und allen ihren Einwohnern den Bann vollstreckte. –
He seized it and struck it with the edge of the sword, likewise with its king, and all the towns of that region, and all the souls that were staying in it. He did not leave any remains in it. Just as he had done to Eglon, so also did he do to Hebron, consuming with the sword all that he found within it.
38 Dann wandte sich Josua mit allen Israeliten gegen Debir, das er bestürmte.
Returning from there to Debir,
39 Er nahm die Stadt ein samt ihrem König und allen zugehörigen Ortschaften; und sie schlugen sie mit der Schärfe des Schwertes und vollzogen an der gesamten Einwohnerschaft den Bann, ohne einen einzigen zu verschonen; wie er es mit Hebron gemacht hatte und wie er mit Libna und dem dortigen König verfahren war, ebenso machte er es auch mit Debir und dem dortigen König.
he seized it and laid waste to it, likewise with its king. And all the surrounding towns, he struck with the edge of the sword. He did not leave in it any remains. Just as he had done to Hebron and Libnah, and to their kings, so did he do to Debir and to its king.
40 So unterwarf Josua das ganze Land, nämlich das Bergland und das Südland, die Niederung und das Hügelland samt allen ihren Königen, ohne auch nur einen einzigen übrigzulassen; und an allem Lebenden vollstreckte er den Bann, wie der HERR, der Gott Israels, geboten hatte.
And so Joshua struck the entire land, the mountains, and the south, and the plains, and the descending slopes, with their kings. He did not leave in it any remains, but he put to death all that was able to breathe, just as the Lord, the God of Israel, had instructed him,
41 Josua unterwarf sie von Kades-Barnea bis Gaza und das ganze Land Gosen bis Gibeon;
from Kadesh-barnea, as far as Gaza, with all the land of Goshen, as far as Gibeon.
42 und zwar brachte Josua alle diese Könige und ihr Land auf einmal in seine Gewalt, denn der HERR, der Gott Israels, stritt für Israel.
And all their kings and their regions, he seized and destroyed with a single attack. For the Lord, the God of Israel, fought on his behalf.
43 Hierauf kehrte Josua mit allen Israeliten in das Lager nach Gilgal zurück.
And he returned, with all of Israel, to the place of the encampment at Gilgal.
