Prediger 7
1 Weit besser fein Gerücht als Feingeruch, der Todestag als die Geburtsstunde.
A good name is better than fine perfume; and the day of death better than the day of one's birth.
2 Viel besser ist's, ins Trauerhaus zu gehen als in ein Haus der Gasterei. Dort zeigt sich ja das Ende jedes Menschen, und wer noch lebt, kann sich's zu Herzen nehmen.
It is better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting: for that is the end of all men, and the living should take this to heart.
3 Viel besser Ernst als Scherz! Das Herz kann wohlgemut bei ernster Miene sein.
Sorrow is better than laughter; for by the sadness of the face the heart is made good.
4 Der Weisen Herz weilt in dem Trauerhause, der Toren Herz im Haus der Freude.
The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.
5 Viel besser ist's, des Weisen Tadel zu vernehmen als auf der Toren Loblied hinzuhören;
It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for a man to hear the song of fools.
6 denn wie der Dornen Knistern unterm Kessel, ist eines Toren Beifall. Ja, der ist eitel.
For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of the fool. This also is vanity.
7 Der Geldeinzug kann einen weisen Mann betören; dem Herzen schadet die Bestechung.
Surely extortion makes the wise man foolish; and a bribe destroys the understanding.
8 Viel besser ist der Ausgang einer Sache als ihr Anfang; viel besser Langmut als der Übermut. -
Better is the end of a thing than its beginning. The patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.
9 Laß dich nicht schnell zum Unmut reizen; denn Unmut wohnt nur in der Brust von Toren!
Do not be hasty in your spirit to be angry, for anger rests in the bosom of fools.
10 Sprich nicht: "Wie kommt es nur, daß jene früheren Tage besser waren als die jetzigen?" Denn nicht aus Weisheit fragst du so. -
Do not say, "Why were the former days better than these?" For you do not ask wisely about this.
11 Die Weisheit ist so gut wie Eigentum. Für alle ist sie Vorteil, die die Sonne schauen.
Wisdom is as good as an inheritance. Yes, it is more excellent for those who see the sun.
12 Die Weisheit ist ein Schutz, ein Schutz das Geld. Des Wissens Vorzug aber ist, daß Weisheit ihrem Herrn das Leben wahrt. -
For wisdom is a defense, even as money is a defense; but the excellency of knowledge is that wisdom preserves the life of him who has it.
13 Durchlebe nur der Gottheit Schickung! Denn wer kann grade machen, was sie krümmt?
Consider the work of God, for who can make that straight, which he has made crooked?
14 Am guten Tag sei guter Dinge! Am Unglückstag schau hin, - die Gottheit macht ja diesen ebenso wie jenen, - auf diesen Sachverhalt, wonach der Mensch nicht die geringste Spur davon noch später findet! -
In the day of prosperity be joyful, and in the day of adversity consider; yes, God has made the one side by side with the other, to the end that man should not find out anything after him.
15 Das alles schaute ich in meinen eitlen Lebenstagen: Da geht zugrunde ein Gerechter trotz seiner Rechtlichkeit. Da lebt ein Frevler lang mit seiner Bosheit. -
All this have I seen in my days of vanity: there is a righteous man who perishes in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man who lives long in his evildoing.
16 Sei nicht zu sehr gerecht! Nicht überklug erzeig dich, daß du nicht in Trübsinn fallest!
Do not be overly righteous, neither make yourself overly wise. Why should you destroy yourself?
17 Sei nicht zu zügellos, und sei kein Tor, damit du nicht zur Unzeit sterbest!
Do not be too wicked, neither be foolish. Why should you die before your time?
18 Gut, wenn du dich zu einem hältst und von dem anderen nicht läßt. Wer wirklich gottesfürchtig ist, der übertrifft sie alle.
It is good that you should take hold of this. Yes, also from that do not withdraw your hand; for he who fears God will come forth from them all.
19 Die Klugheit gibt dem Klugen viel mehr Stärke, als in der Stadt zehn Machthaber besitzen.
Wisdom is a strength to the wise man more than ten rulers who are in a city.
20 Kein Mensch ist so gerecht auf Erden, daß er immer richtig handelte und niemals fehlte.
Surely there is not a righteous man on earth, who does good and doesn't sin.
21 Acht nicht auf jegliches Gerede, damit du nicht vernimmst, wie dich dein Knecht beschimpft!
Also do not take heed to all words that are spoken, lest you hear your servant curse you;
22 Dein Herz weiß selber ja, daß du auch andere geschmäht. -
for often your own heart knows that you yourself have likewise cursed others.
23 All dies durchforschte ich nach Weisheit. Ich sprach, ich möchte weise werden; doch blieb's mir fern.
All this have I proved in wisdom. I said, "I will be wise;" but it was far from me.
24 Was ist, das ist so fern und tief. So tief! Wer kann's erfassen?
That which is, is far off and exceedingly deep. Who can find it out?
25 Und immer wieder richte ich den Sinn darauf, es zu erkennen und auszuforschen und zu suchen Weisheit und ein richtiges Ergebnis und zu sehn der Torheit Fehler und der Tollheit Unvernunft.
I turned around, and my heart sought to know and to search out, and to seek wisdom and the scheme of things, and to know that wickedness is stupidity, and that foolishness is madness.
26 Da fand ich bittrer als den Tod das Weib; ein Fangnetz ist's, sein Herz ein Garn und seine Arme Fesseln. - Nur wer der Gottheit wohlgefällt, schützt sich vor ihr; doch der Verworfne wird durch es verstrickt. -
I find more bitter than death the woman whose heart is snares and traps, whose hands are chains. Whoever pleases God shall escape from her; but the sinner will be ensnared by her.
27 Sieh da, dies fand ich, spricht Kohelet, indem ich eins zum andern fügte, um ein Ergebnis zu erlangen,
Look, this have I found, says the Preacher, one to another, to find out the scheme;
28 das immer wieder ich gesucht und niemals habe finden können. Schon manchen Menschen traf ich lehrend an, doch unter allen diesen fand ich nie ein Weib.
which my soul still seeks; but I have not found: one man among a thousand have I found; but a woman among all those have I not found.
29 Nur dies, sich, habe ich gefunden: Dies, daß die Gottheit einst die Menschen voller Einfalt schuf; doch diese werfen viele Fragen auf.
Look, this only have I found, that God made humankind upright, but they search for many schemes.
